Carolyn “Susie” Burke, 39, of 510 Hillside Court, died Tuesday, January 26, 1999, at her home.
She is survived by two sons, William Johns and Christopher Carrico; one daughter, Rhonda Carrico; one grandchild, Tasne Johns and her beloved mother, Hattie Bruce, all of Lynchburg.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Old City Cemetery, Fourth and Taylor Street, by Pastor Dennis Wade.

Andrew Preston Coleman
Deacon Andrew Preston Coleman departed this life Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 in the Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born July 12, 1911 in Amherst, to the late Willie Andrew Coleman and the late Sally Gardner Coleman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ellis Coleman; a daughter, Margaret Coleman Mannon; a sister, Edna Coleman; four brothers, Thomas, David, Esmond and Arthur Coleman; two grandchildren, Jamale L. Coleman and Shirley E. Coleman.
He was a faithful and loyal member of the Ivy Hill Baptist Church, Naola, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He also served in the United States Army.
He leaves to cherish his memory four sons, Willie A. Coleman of Concord, Raymond L. Coleman, Robert L. Coleman and Gilbert D. Coleman all of Naola; four daughters, Shirley E. Coleman and Emma C. McCray both of Naola, Gearldine E. Coleman and Mary C. Harris both of Lynchburg; one brother, Jesse H. Coleman of Lynchburg; three sisters, Mary L. Burton of Lynchburg, Emma C. Russell of Madison Heights, Virginia and Sally F. Burford of Washington, D.C.; two sons-in-law, Preston L. McCray and Mike Harris Sr.; four daughters-in-law, Mary B. Coleman, Gracie B. Coleman, Roberta C. Coleman and Cheryl H. Coleman, 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Laurie R. Coleman, Rebecca D. Ellis and Alberta B. Coleman and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Ivy Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. M.D. Mays officiating. Interment in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Ruth Noell Hall of 2484 Hurricane Drive, Bedford, departed this life Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 at her residence.
She was born in Bedford County February 24, 1924 to the late Frank Noell and Annie Noell Rixey. She was the wife of Wilma N. Hall.
She joined the Popular Spring Baptist Church at an early age where she served as a Deaconess and vice president of the Missionary Circle.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Vea Spinner, Sodonia Noell, Eugenia Rucker, Emma Cheatwood and Classie Wright.
In addition to her devoted husband, she leaves to cherish her memories six children, Claudine H. Spinner and husband, Leroy of Dale City, Wilmer A. Hall and wife, Mattie of Bedford, Hortense H. Rixey and husband, Lewis of Oxen, Md., James H. Hall of Temple Hill, Md., Geraldine H. Spinner and husband, Joseph of Bedford, Norwood L. Hall of Bedford, Teresa H. Sutton and husband, Daryl of Dale City; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Haynes of Goode, Mrs. Beulah Anderson and husband, James of Forest and Mrs. Annie A. Noell of Lynchburg; one brother, Lawrence (John) O. Noell and wife, Margaret of Forest and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Poplar Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Brown, officiating. Interment will be in the Noell Family Cemetery.

George Burnelle May, 72, of 14 Greenwell Ct., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Roanoke on Nov. 23, 1926, he was the husband of Thelma G. May and a son of the late Everette Charles May and Willie Clara Reynolds May. Mr. May was a Navy veteran of WWII, a retired brick mason and a member of Timber Ridge Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Jackie May Wilson and her husband, Al of Gladys; two sons, Jerry W. May and his wife, Linda and Larry F. May and his wife, Sharon both of Forest; a brother, Darden May of Bedford; two sisters, Violet May Jenkins of Roanoke and Arlene May Witt of Forest; six grandchildren, Kim Hayes, Wes Wilson, Kristy Wilson, Korey May, Kolby May and Kortlyn May; four great-grandchildren, Clinton Hayes, Ryan Hayes, Ian Hayes and Samantha Wilson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank L. May.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Timber Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. David W. Roland officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mildred Brumfield Montgomery
Mildred Brumfield Montgomery died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999 at Camelot Hall. She was the wife of Samuel Paxton Montgomery.
Mrs. Montgomery was born Aug. 7, 1914 in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Bunyan Byrd Brumfield and Sarah Anne Caldwell Brumfield. She was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, J. Robert Montgomery and his wife, Catharine; a daughter, Susan Douthat and her husband, David and grandchildren, J. Robert Montgomery Jr. and his wife, Skye, Paige Montgomery and Robert McDaniel. She is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Michelle Kidd and her son, Colby and two great-grandchildren, Sabina and Darienne Montgomery. She also leaves behind a devoted caregiver, Kathy Jerina.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 1999 at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. John Pickett.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999 at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel.

Virginia Organ
Virginia Organ, 94, of 279 Gladys Road, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born August 20, 1904, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Horace and Mary Hughes Organ. She was a member of Wesleybury United Methodist Church and was a retired school teacher from the Fairfax County School System.
She is survived by four nephews, William Cabell Garbee of Richmond, Estes Dudley of Florida, Robert Horace Garbee of Lynchburg, and James B. Organ Jr. of Gladys; one niece, Anne Arthur of Greensboro, N.C.
She was preceded in death by one brother, James B. Organ; two sisters, Madge Clark and Elva Garbee.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999 in Wesleybury United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Judy Carlson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a nephew, James B. Organ Jr., 373 Gladys Rd., Gladys.

Mary Loflin Phelps
Mary Loflin Phelps, 80, of Westridge Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital following a brief illness.
Born April 27, 1918 in Chesterfield County, she was the wife of the late Russell Carlyle Phelps and a daughter of the late Rev. Nelius L. Loflin and Muriel Talley Loflin. Mrs. Phelps was a graduate of Virginia Baptist School of Nursing and excelled in that field having been awarded the O.B. Barker Medal. She was a member of College Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Stephen M. Phelps of Wilson, N.C.; her grandson, Stephen Michael Phelps Jr. of Lynchburg; her granddaughter, Amanda R. Phelps of Richmond; a brother, William R. Loflin and his wife, Shirley of Lynchburg; three sisters, Margie R. Loflin of Lynchburg, Virginia L. Stokes and her husband, John of Newport News and Claire L. Graham of Charlotte, N.C., six nephews, four nieces, five great nephews and seven great nieces.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 1999 at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Jim Nelson and Dr. David Upshaw officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Peggy Dobyns Roberson, 67, of Oskaloosa, Kans., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 at her home. She had cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 1999 at the Barnett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa, Kans. Burial will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Perry, Kans.
She is survived by her husband, W.K. Roberson of the home and two sons and two daughters.
Local survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Marian D. and Cecil Banton of Madison Heights.

Roy St. Clair
Roy Houston St. Clair, 73, of 489 E. Fairlawn Dr., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 at Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.
He was born Sept. 26, 1925, in Botetourt County, a son of the late Robert H. and Mary Adams St. Clair.
Mr. St. Clair served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired in 1976 after more than 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier on the old Covington Route 2 postal route. Mr. St. Clair was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Vina Mae Johnson St. Clair of Covington; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary H. and Leigh St. Clair of Lynchburg; a grandson, Derek H. St. Clair of Lynchburg; two brothers, Claude W. St. Clair and Lewis A. St. Clair, both of Covington; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted Wednesday from the graveside at Alleghany Memorial Park with the Rev. Pembroke Hall officiating.

Geoffrey Loring Belisle
Geoffrey Loring Belisle, 57, of Amherst, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at his residence after a long illness.
Born in Waltham, Mass., he was the son of Ruth Macloon Belisle of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and the late Eugene Louis Belisle.
Geoff received his BA from Northwestern University in 1964 and attended Washington University, studying for his Master’s Degree in Urban Studies. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969 and was posted to the Office of the Army Chief of Staff. After a long residency in Washington, D.C., Geoff moved to Virginia where he served as the City of Lynchburg’s carpenter, a post he retired from in 1998.
In addition to his mother, Geoff is survived by one brother, Alexander Belisle of Vernon, Conn.; four sisters, Margo Belisle of New York City, Susan DuPont of South Royalton, Vt., Jeanne Dorval Peterson of Vernon, Conn. and Ruth Bullard of Hobe Sound, Fla. and a number of nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Born April 23, 1914 in Rockingham County, N.C., a retired farmer, Mr. Dickerson was a son of the late Alexandra and Mattie Cox Dickerson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian Layne, Della Bolton Ross and Irene Edwards and two brothers, Vester and Wesley Dickerson.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, William Melvin Dickerson of Tuscon, Ariz.; two daughters, Hazel Margaret Schoolfield and Jeannette Catherine Revis both of Reidsville, N.C.; one step-son, Kenneth Dickerson of Amherst; one step-daughter, Agnes Dickerson of Danville; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

APPOMATTOX — Elma Giles Hoke died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at Appomattox Health Care Center.
Born in Appomattox County, she was the daughter of the late Orson Taylor and Etta Lawhorne Giles. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Reynolds and her husband, Alvin Reynolds of Appomattox; two grandsons, Dustin Shane and Phillip Gordon; four sisters, Inez Blackwell of Spout Spring, Nellie Jarrell, Shirley Godsey and Jane Mann of Appomattox.
She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Hoke; two sisters, Rachel Giles and Laura Jordan; two brothers, Lt. Edward Giles and Taylor Giles.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999 at Liberty Cemetery by the Rev. Daniel Dockery.

Gracie G. Morris, 91, of Forest, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the widow of Raymond William Morris.
Born Dec. 20, 1907 in Enon, Missouri, she was a daughter of the late George and Dollie Aquart Rinehart. She was preceded in death by one daughter.
Mrs. Morris is survived by one son, Gordon Morris and his wife, Barbara of Forest; two grandchildren, Gordon R. Morris II and his wife, Sheri of Chester, Tracey R. Tate and her husband, John of Mechanicsville and three great-grandchildren, Laura Morris of Chester and Matthew and Frankie Tate of Mechanicsville. She also leaves behind many friends, caregiver, Betty Layne and the loving staff of Helping Hands Nursing Service.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Virginia Memorial Park by the Rev. Thornton Critchley.

Gertrude Stevens, 87, of Keene, Texas, formerly of Republican Grove, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999 after a short hospitalization. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas A. Stevens and is survived by son, Charles; grandson, Thomas G.; a step-great-grandson, Benjamin Bates and sister, Marjorie Harrop along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Republican Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church in Republican Grove, Va.

HAMPTON — Andrew J. Clay Jr., 72, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999. He was a native of Altavista and had been a Peninsula resident since 1952.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with eight years of service. He was self employed in the carpet business for 32 years. Mr. Clay was also a former member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jewell Clay; two daughters, Sandra Gardner and Sonya Clay of Hampton; one brother, Walter Clay of Norfolk; two sisters, Geneva Bennett and Rosebelle Kidd of Altavista and four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 28, 1999 at Peninsula Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service until 8:30 p.m. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 1999 in Altavista Memorial Park.

Gwendoline Willson Garland, 61, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at the Elder Care Gardens in Charlottesville. She was the wife of the late Samuel Meredith Garland.
Mrs. Garland was born March 3, 1937 in Sussex, England and was a retired maintenance supervisor with Raytheon, Inc., Honolulu, Hawaii.

Cecil Jones
Cecil Jones, 74, co-founder and president of M.C.M. Parking Co., Inc. in Washington, D.C., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Mr. Jones was born August 9, 1924 in Nelson County, a son of the late Robert Grant Jones and Ella Proffitt Jones Coffer. He is a former resident of Lynchburg.
Mr. Jones honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a member of Capital Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willie S. Jones; three sisters, Mamie J. Hawkins, Lena B. Lawhorne and Bette Dabbondanza.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Connie Leebrick Jones of Falls Church; a daughter, Dale Jones Carter of Waynesboro; two sons, Cecil S. Jones of Vienna and Timothy A. Jones Sr. of Herndon; seven grandchildren Charles and Jason Carter, Christa, Tim Jr., Jennifer, Rebecca and Christopher Jones; three brothers, James, Fred and Mitchell Jones of Lynchburg; a sister, Annie Carter of Waynesboro. Also, many other relatives and friends.
He will be remembered for his great love and devotion to his family and friends and his deep faith in God.

Helen Lorraine Moore New, 72, of 220 Morgan Street, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the widow of John William “Bill” New.
Born in Meadowview, Va., she was a daughter of the late John Leslie Moore and Kathleen Thomas Moore. Mrs. New was a retired employee of the Sports Shop.
She is survived by two step-daughters, Dorothy N. Terry and Iris N. Fuller; one sister, Janet “Wanda” Fee and her husband, Pete and numerous extended family members and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Pete Fee.

Ray Wyatt Rowland, 60, of Hurt, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 in the V.A. Hospital in Salem.
Born Dec. 19, 1938 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Edison Smith Rowland and Alice Saunders Rowland. He was a member of the Altavista Moose Club.
He is survived by his wife, Kitty Rowland of Altavista; one daughter, Adriana Prettyman of Altavista; five brothers, Luther Rowland of Chatham, Guy Rowland of Gretna, Raymond Rowland of Evington, George Rowland and Kenneth Rowland both of Hurt and three sisters, Nan Jacobs of Gretna, Beulah Shelton of Danville and Naomi Fletcher of Tenn.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Rowland.

Betty Cathcart Carpenter, 74, of 1415 Broad Street, Altavista, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Robert B. Carpenter Jr.
Born July 1, 1924 in Anderson, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James Milling Cathcart and Bessie Henderson Cathcart. She was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women, a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served in many local, district and state offices and a past president of the Virginia Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, David Randolph Carpenter of China Grove, N.C.; three daughters, Lee C. Harizanoff of Richmond, Catherine C. Bear of Roanoke and June C. Carpenter of Altavista; two brothers, Edward Cathcart, MD of Spartanburg, S.C. and James M. Cathcart Jr. of Greenwood, S.C.; two sisters, Mary C. Dickson and Sarah C. Ruble both of Anderson, S.C., six grandchildren and a special family friend, Frances Calloway.

Mr. Cooper was born Aug. 19, 1930 in Covington to the late Rennie Cooper and the late Lee Ona Cooper.

Mrs. Frances W. Dabney, wife of the late John C. Dabney III, died at Virginia Baptist Hospital Tuesday morning, Jan. 26, 1999.
Born in Lynchburg in 1928, she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. Williams and Elizabeth Bryan Williams. She attended E.C. Glass High School and graduated from the St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C. and Mt. Vernon Junior College in Washington, D.C. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Lynchburg Garden Club and the Junior League of Lynchburg.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Dabney IV of Toronto, Canada; a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William B. Hutter, of Lynchburg and grandchildren, Sara E.B. Hutter, Margaret W. Hutter, John C. Dabney V, Caitlin M. Dabney and Nicole F.A. Dabney. Two brothers also survive, Samuel H. Williams Jr. and James J. Williams of Lynchburg.

LOVINGSTON — Margaret “Garget” Floyd, 82, of Lovingston, died Monday night, Jan. 25, 1999 in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. A lifelong resident of Lovingston Garget as all knew her was born Sept. 10, 1916 in Lovingston, a daughter of the late William Albert Stevens Sr. and Marion Stevens Stevens.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Floyd. She was a member of Nelson United Methodist Church in Arrington.
Garget is survived by two daughters, Margaret Floyd Butler of Staunton and Joyce F. Eubank and her husband, Douglas of Pleasant View; two sons, Ray L. Floyd and his wife, Charlotte of Waynesboro and John “Jimmy” Floyd and his wife, Sylvia of Lovingston; a brother, William S. Stevens Jr. of Front Royal, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Born in Lynchburg in 1922, he was the son of the late Hugh W. and Mamie S. Frommelt. Mr. Frommelt was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a graduate of Holy Cross High School. He was a retired accountant with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
He is survived by one brother, Hugh W. Frommelt Jr. of Lynchburg; three cousins, Steve Ambrose of Silver Springs, Md., Cecilia and Albert Ambrose also of Silver Springs, Md. and numerous close friends.

Mrs. Hamm was born August 19, 1913, in Grayson County to the late Muncy Richardson and the late Mintie Halsey Richardson. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Meade Memorial United Methodist Church.

Cecil Jones, 74, co-founder and president of M.C.M. Parking Co., Inc. in Washington, D.C., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999.
Mr. Jones was born August 9, 1924 in Nelson County, a son of the late Robert Grant Jones and Ella Proffitt Jones Coffer. He is a former resident of Lynchburg.
Mr. Jones honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a member of Capital Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willie S. Jones; three sisters, Mamie J. Hawkins, Lena B. Lawhorne and Bette Dabbondanza.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Connie Leebrick Jones of Falls Church; a daughter, Dale Jones Carter of Waynesboro; two sons, Cecil S. Jones of Vienna and Timothy A. Jones Sr. of Herndon; seven grandchildren Charles and Jason Carter, Christa, Tim Jr., Jennifer, Rebecca and Christopher Jones; three brothers, James, Fred and Mitchell Jones of Lynchburg; a sister, Annie Carter of Waynesboro. Also, many other relatives and friends.
He will be remembered for his great love and devotion to his family and friends and his deep faith in God.

Born October 19, 1907 in Appomattox County, she was the daughter of the late Neil A. and Annie J. Tanner. Mrs. Wade was retired from the garment factory and was a very active member of Fairview Christian Church, where she was a member of the Sunshine Bible Class for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Fairview Rebekah Lodge #52.

Maggie was born in Appomattox County on April 14, 1904, a daughter of the late Henry Archer and Gertrude Doss Perdieu. She was a lifelong member of Maple Grove Baptist Church and retired from the Appomattox Garment Factory.
She is survived by her daughters, Louise Phelps and her husband, Calvin of Chesapeake and Audrey (Sis) Ferguson of Appomattox.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Phillips and the Rev. Don Bryant. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Sis Ferguson.
Shelly Jean Bernard
Shelly Jean Bernard, 48, of Boxwood Street, Hudson, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999 at Caldwell County Hospice.
She was born Aug. 18, 1950 in Oscoda, Mich. to Mrs. Mildred Tooze Lee of Oscoda and the late Forrest Lee. Mrs. Bernard was employed at Underdown’s Florist and was the former owner of Bernard’s Florist in Viewmont.
Survivors in addition to her mother, include her husband, Michael Kevin Bernard of the home; one daughter, Ms. Melissa Bernard of Valdese; one brother, Brian Lee of Chardon, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Bob (Delores) Neis of Tomah, Wis. and Mrs. Perry (Traci) Pieper of Little Chute, Wis.; devoted mother-in-law, Mrs. Maude Bernard of Madison Heights and a special friend, Frank Diplock.
Memorial services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999 at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. James Cone.

Edith Phillips Carpenter, 81, of 5041 82nd Avenue North, Apt. 209, Pinellas Park, Fla. and formerly of Rustburg, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Sept. 17, 1917 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late John Bradley Phillips and Bessie Lee Moorman Phillips. She was a member of Faith Community Church, Largo, Fla. and was retired from Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena, Fla.
She is survived by one son, John Carpenter and his wife, Alison of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three daughters, Mary C. Hatfield of Rustburg, Phyllis Hollister and her husband, James of Seminole, Fla. and Dorothy Lennox and her husband, David of Clearwater, Fla.; two brothers, Edward Phillips and John B. Phillips and his wife, Barbara all of Rustburg; one sister, Virginia Powers of Evington; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, also survive.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope United Methodist Church.

GLADYS — Adele Dowdy Crews, 65, of 7213 Lewis Ford Road, died Monday morning, Jan. 25, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Marvin Aubrey Crews.
She was born in Halifax County, Aug. 11, 1933, daughter of the late Joseph Preston Dowdy and Edith Cage Dowdy. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a former employee of Burlington Industries.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Marvin A. (Buddy) Crews of Brookneal; two daughters, Bernadette C. Littles of Gladys, Christy C. Angel of Gladys; two brothers, Clarence Dowdy of Rustburg, Joseph Dowdy of Madison Heights; two sisters, Frances Gibson of Gretna, Rachel Hamlett of Rustburg, eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Shelby Royal with burial to follow at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

Newton Belnap Fowler
1904-1999
Newton Belnap Fowler, 94, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 in Lynchburg.
Mr. Fowler was born in Wabash, Ind. and lived during high school in Meridian, Miss. At death, he was a resident of Westminster/Canterbury Retirement Community in Lynchburg. Mr. Fowler had worked for 43 years as a communications engineer with AT&T. He attended Georgia Tech. During his career he worked in several cities including Atlanta, Ga., St. Louis, Missouri and Cincinnati, Ohio. He served a brief stint during WWII as a civilian specialist with the Army Signal Corps instructing teletype operators for the invasion of Normandy. He also worked for the federal government on the early warning radar system in Alaska during the Cold War. In retirement, Mr. Fowler was a consultant on telephone transmission systems in several foreign countries including Iran under the late Shah. Mr. Fowler was an active member of his church, the Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ), serving as Sunday school teacher and elder. He was also on several national boards and committees of the denomination.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William G. Fowler of Meridian, Miss. and by his brother, James Emory Belnap Fowler of Lindsay, Calif.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Nancy Elliott Fowler formerly of Somerset, Ky.; two children, Newton B. Fowler Jr. (Ellis), Baltimore, Md. and Joy Fowler Flowers (Robert), Madison Heights; five grandchildren, Laura F. Tyree, Rob Flowers, Holly F. Keck, Newt Fowler III, Allen Fowler and four great-grandchildren.

Vernard Flavious Gilliam
Vernard Flavious Gilliam, 94, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 in Camelot Hall Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Lula Baker Gilliam.
Mr. Gilliam was born Dec. 3, 1904 in Prince Edward County to the late Warren Hutson Gilliam and the late Alma Covington Gilliam. He was retired from Craddock Terry Shoe Company after 40 years of service. He also was a member and served as a deacon at Fairview Christian Church, was a member of the Men’s Fellowship and had 30 year perfect attendance with the Loyal Mens Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jack Kerns of Lynchburg; son and daughter-in-law, Max and Ann Gilliam of Evington; a sister, Lucille Johnson formerly of Prospect; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. John Baker of Leavenworth, Wash., Mrs. Guthrie Gilliam of Buena Vista and Mrs. Arnold “Jack” Gilliam of Pamplin; four grandsons and their wives, Vernard M. “Vern” Gilliam Jr. and Jackie Gilliam, Thomas Nelson “Tom” and Coleen Gilliam, Stuart Alan and Lisa Harris and Brian S. and Toni Harris; two granddaughters and their husband, Deborah G. “Debbie” and Tom Wright and Pamela G. “Pam” and George Hromco; seven great-grandchildren, Ben, Aaron and Maegann Wright, Derek, Justin and Lauren Harris and Courtney Hromco; two step-grandsons and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, A.C. (Jack) Gilliam and Guthrie Gilliam.

Christopher Columbus Gowin of 554 Leesville Road, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Thelma Ewers Gowin.
Chris was born Jan. 3, 1915 in Buckingham County, the son of the late Elijah Allen Gowin and Martha Seay Gowin. He retired from Pepsi Cola/General Cinema after 40 years of service. He was a member of Woodman of the World and was named Mr. Woodman in 1990 and 1992 and an active member of Park View United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member and past treasurer of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Emmett, Roy, Ernest and Lewis Gowin and one sister, Nellie Glass.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Christopher Ray Gowin and his wife, Jane of Fort Mill, S.C. and Terry Kent Gowin and his wife, Gail of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Christopher Hills Gowin, Allen H. Gowin and Mary Lofton of Fort Mill, S.C.; two brothers, Percy Allen Gowin of Richmond and Samuel Gowin of Dillwyn and two sisters, Pauline G. Smith of Midlothian and Ruth Ann LeSueur of Spotsylvania County.

Albert Manuel Kronfeld, 95, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 at Westminster-Canterbury, Lynchburg. He was the husband of the late Doris Goldstein Kronfeld.
Born Dec. 25, 1903 in Austria, he was a son of the late Solomon and Yetta Kronfeld. Mr. Kronfeld was a retired salesman and a member of the Agudath Sholom Synagogue, Lynchburg and B’Nai B’rith. Prior to moving to Lynchburg in 1992, he had been a resident of Fairfield, Conn. since 1941.
Mr. Kronfeld is survived by one son, Jay Kronfeld of Roxbury, Conn.; one daughter, Naomi Shapiro of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Alexander Isaac Shapiro of Atlanta, Ga., Deborah Loya of Roxbury, Conn., Erica Winnes of Avon, Conn. and Joshua Kronfeld Chabelowsky of Arlington and six great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Noah, Micah and Joshua Shapiro and Christina and Andrew Loya.

Murdis G. Thomas departed this life Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home, Lynchburg.
She was born in Buckingham County to the late Phil and Fannie Patterson Gray. She was the wife of the late Tom J. Thomas for 56 years and was a member of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Buckingham County.
Preceding her in death were six children, Mrs. Betty Spinner, Mrs. Lorraine Raine, Frank Thomas, John Thomas, T.J. Thomas and Ms. Shirley Ann Thomas.
She is survived by eight children, Mrs. Estell Johnson of Madison Heights, Mrs. Marie Smith (Wilson) of Forest, Mrs. Ella M. Hill (Alfred) of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Elenora Free of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Mary Carter (Benjamin) of Silver Springs, Md., Mrs. Bernice Roame (Arthur) of Silver Springs, Md.; two sons, William (Toe Joe) Thomas of Lynchburg and Nathan Thomas of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Nora Epps of Bakerfield, Calif.; one brother, Harold Gray of Cumberland.
She is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Yvonne Thomas of Madison Heights, Addie Thomas of Lynchburg; a devoted and caring friend, Joyce Farmer of Lynchburg, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Doris Phillips Carwile, 76, of Lynchburg, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in Camelot Hall Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Lawrence Lynwood Carwile.
She was born Feb. 27, 1922 in Campbell County, the daughter of the late L. V. Phillips, Sr. and Nellie Baker Phillips. Doris grew up in Bedford County and was Miss Bedford County in 1941. She was co-owner with her late husband of Carwile Market and retired from Revco. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church and throughout her life she enjoyed music and playing the organ.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean Carwile Masteller and her husband, Richard of Walla Walla, Wash. and Peggy Carwile Karpenske and her husband, Jack of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Kerry Carwile Masteller of Wellesley, Mass., Carrie Barrack and Jonathan Karpenske of Lynchburg, Jane Bockert of Wilmington, Del. and Sara Karpenske of Albuquerque, N.M.; one great grandson, Christopher Barrack of Lynchburg and four sisters, Nellie P. James H. Everette, Jr.
HAVERHILL, MA - James H. Everette, Jr., age 75 died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999. He was born in Lynchburg on Nov. 24, 1923, son of the late James H. and Vera (Allen) Everette and attended Lynchburg schools graduating from the E. C. Glass High School with the class of 1941. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Fitchburg State College and received his Associates degree in electrical engineering from Merrimack College in 1962. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout with four palms. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Mr. Everette served in the U. S. Navy during W.W. II as a technician first class aboard the submarine USS Tench, a ship he commissioned and aboard which he participated in three successful war patrols. At the time of his discharge in 1946, he had received several awards including the Submarine Combat Insignia with 2 gold stars and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with three gold stars.
Prior to his retirement in 1986, he had been employed by Raytheon Co. for thirty years. During his tenure at the Raytheon Lowell Plant he held several positions including Engineer, Engineering Supervisor and finally Quality Assurance Manager of the Sidewinder, AMRAAM and HARM Missile programs.
Mr. Everette was a member of the Squalis Chapter of the Submarine Veterans of W.W. II and the Thresher Base of the U. S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., both of Portsmouth, N.H. He enjoyed photography, videography and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife Helen (Lemire) Everette, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage, three daughters, Donna E. Traficante and her husband Rodney, and Karen A. Everette, both of Haverhill, Susan E. Dunbar and her husband Ronald of Sandown, N.H., also a son John W. “Jack” Everette and his wife Kathie of Haverhill, two sisters, Nell Baer and her husband Erwin and Connie Main and her husband John, an aunt Iva Ballagh, all of Lynchburg, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 23 with burial in St. Josephs Cemetery, Haverhill, MA.
William Anderson Garth
AMHERST - William Anderson Garth, 78, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Rosalie MacDonnell Garth.
Born March 21, 1920 in Alexandria, he was a son of the late Lee Burnley and Lottie Dickerson Garth. He was a retired oceanographer from the U. S. government and an Army Veteran of WW II were he received the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of VPI in Blacksburg with a B.S. Degree in Forestry. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and the Auburn University with a Masters Degree in Fish and Wildlife. He attended various colleges in the Washington, D.C. area, studying oceanography. He also attended the University of Virginia pursuing a Doctorate Degree in American History. After retiring from the U. S. government, he taught in public schools in Va. Beach and Amherst County.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William Anderson Garth, II of Amherst and a daughter, Cheryl Garth Tyree and husband, Justin of Monroe; a sister, Mary Ann Garth of Gore; three grandchildren, Heather Ann Garth of Rustburg, Kyle Anderson Tyree and Tiffany Dawn Tyree both of Monroe.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Ruckersville, Va. with the Rev. Dan Carlton officiating.

Robert Eldridge Kimery, 83, of Goode passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 28, 1915 in Tenn., a son of the late Max Jerome Kimery and Zenna Ruble Hylton Kimery. He was preceded in death by a son, Roy Lee Kimery.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Decker Kimery; two sons, Robert Florian Kimery, N.C., James Hoyle Kimery, Texas; a daughter, Zenna Kimery Ferguson, Huddleston; a special friend, Sambo; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She was born in Bedford County on May 25, 1908 a daughter of the late Willie Hampton Agee and Blanche Vaughan Agee. She was the widow of Thomas Minter Kirkwood. Mrs. Kirkwood was retired from Rubatex Corp. and a member of Thaxton Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Tom Kirkwood and wife Brenda, Montvale; Robert M. Kirkwood and wife Diane, Forest; four daughters, Janice Carter and her husband, Cecil; Julia Thomas and her husband, Fred; Betty Mitchell and Barbara Kirkwood all of Bedford; a sister-in-law, Alice Agee, Bedford; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one nephew and three nieces.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999 at Thaxton Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Beck officiating. Burial will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park. Margaret Taylor Loeffler
Margaret Taylor Loeffler, 89, of Farmington, formerly of Windsor, widow of Walter M. Loeffler, Jr., died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 at McLean Home, Simsbury.
Born in Windsor, daughter of the late Charles Frederick and Vesta (Spencer) Taylor, she was a life long member of the First Church in Windsor, Congregational, a 50 year member of Abigail Wolcott Ellsworth Chapter DAR, and a life member of the Windsor Historical Society. An artist all her life; during the later years she became a poet and published two works, one which reflected on retirement and the other her personal feelings of grief after the death of her husband Walter.
She leaves three daughters and their husbands Margaret Lee and (Bruce Johnston) Loeffler of Granby, Hannah Hollister and (Jim) Herward of Lynchburg, who Mrs. Loeffler lived with for a time and Rebecca and (Will) Runk of Bristol; a sister Lois Taylor of Granby; and two grandchildren Bryan and Megan Herward.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, 1 p.m. at the First Church in Windsor, Congregational. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Palisado Cemetery. Robert Lee Martin
Robert Lee Martin, 75, of 2016 Marshall Mill Road, Gladys, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Audrey Tweedy Martin.
Born May 18, 1923 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Robert Lynch Martin and Emma Bowen Martin. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, an Army veteran of WW II, and a retired employee of Frank’s Place, Inc. with 25 years of service.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley M. Garrett of Canton, Ga; two grandchildren, Jerry Garett and Amanda Draughn; one great-grandchild, Skylor River Draughn; one brother, Hubert Martin of Gladys; four sisters, Erna Isaacs of Spout Spring, Bernice Isaacs of Gladys, Katie Goff of Rustburg and Patty Hodnett of Long Island.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Robert H. Garrett, and a brother, William Lewis Martin.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999 in Wesleybury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Judy Carlson and Dr. Jerry Falwell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Glenn Edwin Randall, 68, of Monroe, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 at Avante’. He was the husband of Betty Jane Marsh Randall.
Born June 8, 1930 in Reed City, Mich., he was the son of the late Laurence K. Randall and the late Laura Jenny Stillwell Randall. Mr. Randall was a retired Greyhound Bus Driver and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bedford. He was a member of the Lions Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Mainenti of Fla.; three sons, David Lee Randall of Monroe, Michael Ray Randall of Fla., and Lawrence Edwin Randall of Monroe; and seven grandchildren.

Nannie Tanner Wade
Nannie Tanner Wade, 91, of 2456 Mosby Avenue, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Elridge William Wade.
Born October 19, 1907 in Appomattox County, she was the daughter of the late Neil A. and Annie J. Tanner. Mrs. Wade was retired from the garment factory and was a very active member of Fairview Christian Church, where she was a member of the Sunshine Bible Class for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Fairview Rebekah Lodge #52.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Elridge W. Wade, Jr.
Mrs. Wade is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Harry Hale of Long Island; a daughter-in-law, Myrtis P. Wade of Lynchburg; two brothers, Marshall Tanner of Lynchburg and Jones Tanner of Gladys; two sisters, Virginia Coates, also of Gladys and Louise Isaacs of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Harry Hale, Jr. and his wife, Judy of Chatham, Steve Hale and his wife, Carolyn of Long Island, Sherman Wade and his wife, Cathy of Tucker, Ga., and Ronald Wade and his wife, Deborah of League City, Texas and nine great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Brown Wooldridge, 84, of Lynchburg and formerly of Forest, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in the Medical Care Center.
She was born Nov. 3, 1914 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Hugh Pleasant Brown and Martha Millner Brown. Her husband was the late Earl Wooldridge. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vivian B. Watson, Fay B. and Charles E. Bumgarner all of Lynchburg.

Harvey Franklin Allen, Jr., 55, of Madison Heights, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born Feb. 10, 1943 in Lynchburg, a son of Mary Keesee Allen Ellis and the late Harvey Franklin Allen, Sr. He formerly worked at Lynchburg Foundry and Lynchburg College.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father, Kenneth D. Ellis and his deeply devoted companion, Lisa R. Gibson of Madison Heights; four children, Sherry A. Williams of Lynchburg, Paul D. Allen of Michigan, Franklin E. Allen and Cherish N. Allen of Lynchburg; three grandchildren; one sister, Paula A. Bagby of Lynchburg and five brothers, Edward L. “Rocky” Allen of Rustburg, Charlie Allen of Maryland, Sidney Allen of Yorktown; Kenneth Ray Ellis and Roy D. Ellis of Lynchburg.

Darryl Maurice (Pete) Avery, of 122 Daddyrabbit Road, Evington died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 along with his sister, Ms. Deborah Rose Peterson in Oxon Hill, Md.
Born in Lynchburg, he was the son of Mrs. Geraline Oulds Avery and the late Lewis C. Avery. Darryl was employed with Barker Jennings Co. He was a member of Masonic Livewire Lodge #265, the Constantine Consistory #105, and Aladdin Temple #111 (Shriners), a member of Mt. Nebo Chapter 35 Royal Ark Masons, and a member of Christopher Attucks Chapter #18 Knight Templer. He was also the District Deputy Grand Master for the 23rd Masonic District, Prince Hall affiliate. He was a member of Old Dominion Lodge #181, Improved and Benevolent Order of Elks, and a member of Central Virginia Vans Unlimited. He was a member of Mt. Evergreen Baptist Church.
In addition to his loving and devoted mother, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sandra Booker of Rustburg, and Ms. Stacie Rose Broadus of Evington, 9 nieces and nephews, 7 great nieces and nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Elliott Blankenship Burley, 90, of 140 Melody Lane, Monroe died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home. He was the husband of Eunice Gibson Whitesell Burley.
He was born August 12, 1908 in Amherst County, a son of the late Lucian DuVal Burley and Maggie Gillespie Burley. He retired from Lynchburg Training School and Hospital, an Army Veteran and was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lisa Michelle Evans.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Sam Whitesell and his wife, Sharon of Lynchburg; two daughters, Linda Evans and her husband, Clifton of Madison Heights and Kathy Armstrong and her husband, Jon of McLean; one grandson, Clifton Evans, Jr. of Madison Heights and a number of nieces and nephews including two devoted nieces, Kitty Meredith of Lynchburg and Joanne Bryant of Madison Heights.

Edith LaRue Cavey
Edith LaRue Cavey, 81, of Lynchburg died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of Ernest Elmer Cavey Sr.
Born in Baltimore, Md. on Jan. 20, 1918 to the late Joseph Franklin and Edith LaRue Wheat Marks. She was retired from K-Mart and was a member of the Methodist Faith.
She is survived by three sons Bill Cavey, Ernest Cavey, Jr., Andrew Cavey; two daughters, Shirley Dority and her husband Richard, and Darlene Feyerherd and her husband Hank; four brothers; two sisters; four grandchildren, Lea Meadows, Lynn Crigger, Jason and Robert Feyerherd, and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel and other times at the residence of Darlene Feyerherd, 156 Brook Street in Monroe.
Joseph Alexander Gilchrist Jr.
Joseph Alexander Gilchrist Jr. died Jan. 21, 1999. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Feb. 21, 1903.
He attended the University School in Cleveland and graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1928. He joined the 1st Cleveland Cavalry in Cleveland and served in the Army in Germany in World War II, attaining the rank of Major.
He worked for many years for Sweet Briar College, beginning as Superintendent of the Farm in 1947, and becoming Director of Natural Resources in 1965. He retired in 1971 and moved to Lynchburg where he continued to serve the college in a consulting capacity.
He was an active member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served as a member of the vestry; he also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program. He was a member of the Bob White Lodge in Lynchburg and was a life long outdoor enthusiast, he had been an active member of the Amherst Rotary Club for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Lee Cox Gilchrist, whom he married in 1948, who died in 1988.
He is survived by his two daughters, Joan Cox Danzansky of Washington, D.C. and Judith L. Cox Hollohan of Arlington; three grandchildren, Michael Winston Danzansky of Washington, D.C., Katharine Cox Danzansky of Boston, Mass. and Thomas Lee Hollohan of Arlington and a nephew, Daniel Gilchrist Barnes of Hickory, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg, the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army.

Robert Irvin “Freck” Kendrick, 82, of Huddleston, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 in the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born May 14, 1916 in Bedford County, a son of the late Roley T. Kendrick and Margaret Cassidy Kendrick. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Billy Burks Nichols; two brothers, Carlton E. Kendrick, Leo D. Kendrick; and a sister, Elmer K. Tuck.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Morgan Kendrick; a daughter, Melinda K. Nichols, Huddleston; an adopted granddaughter and her husband, Dale Ellen Nichols and Robert Davis, Knoxville, Tenn.; two adopted great grandsons, Quaid and Devon Davis, Knoxville, Tenn.; five sisters, Gracie K. He was born Sept. 28, 1915 in Tenn., a son of the late Max Jerome Kimery and Zenna Ruble Hylton Kimery. He was preceded in death by a son, Roy Lee Kimery.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Decker Kimery; two sons, Robert Florian Kimery, N.C., James Hoyle Kimery, Texas; a daughter, Zenna Kimery Ferguson, Huddleston; a special friend, Sambo.

Mrs. Meriwether Gantt Lewis McGinnis, 90, of Shipman died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999.
She was born in Howardsville, on Sept. 19, 1908. Mrs. Meriwether McGinnis was a member of Emmanual Episcopal Church, (Glenmore) Buckingham County for 80 years and attended Trinity Episcopal at Oak Ridge for the past 50 years. She was a very active worker in the activities of the Shipman community. She served as the assistant and head Post Mistress of the Shipman Post Office for over 30 years.
Survivors include two sons, Bernard Lewis McGinnis of Shipman, Charles Meriwether McGinnis of Salem and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents John Gantt Lewis, and Mary Camm Patteson Lewis and also her husband Bernard Watson McGinnis in 1949.
A church service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church at Oak Ridge. Interment will be in the Amherst Cemetery at Amherst after the church service conducted by the Rev. Craig Fickling.

AMHERST — Jim Harvey McMahon, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at his residence. He was the husband of Anita Gaudes McMahon.
Born Nov. 4, 1928 in Gaines, N.Y., he was a son of the late Thomas James and Irene Hayes McMahon. He was a member and Deacon of the Amherst Baptist Church, a retired mechanic from the Pan American Airlines and an Air Force veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Timothy James McMahon and wife, Lisa of Richmond; one daughter, Wendy Sue McMahon, Clifton Park, N.Y.; two sisters, Audrey McMahon and Virginia Coleman both of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren, Tyler Niedhammer, Kacey Niedhammer and Moriah Niedhammer all of Clifton Park, N.J., Katrina McMahon and Christopher McMahon both of Richmond.

Born March 7, 1940 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Virginia Maude Dowdy Hall. She was a member of Hyles Baptist Church in Richmond.

W. Oscar Sisk, Jr., 80, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999 in Athens, Ga.
Born Jan. 11, 1919, he was a native of Lynchburg, a son of the late William Oscar and Cordie Lee Pickeral Sisk. He was a member of the Athens Elks Lodge and a Member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He served in the U. S. Navy, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. He retired as a salesman.
He is survived by a sister, Joyce Creasy and brother, Herbert Sisk, both of Lynchburg and several nieces and nephews.

GREENFIELD - Cleveland Junior “Buddy” Thacker, 60, of Chapel Hollow Road in Greenfield, died Friday evening Jan. 22, 1999 at his residence.
Born in Nelson County on July 21, 1938, he was a son of the late Cleveland C. Thacker and Evelyn Mays Thacker.
Buddy was employed with Faulconer Construction Company for 31 years and was a member of Bethel Church of the Brethren in Arrington.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Thacker of the residence; two sons, David Ray Thacker of Amherst, and Tony Junior Thacker of Tyro; two daughters, Shirley Carroll of Arrington, and Becky Thacker along with her fiancé, Brian Shifflett of Afton; four sisters, Joyce T. Mays of Madison Heights, Rebecca T. Gunter of Marliboro, Md., Mary T. Arthur of Bedford, and Elizabeth T. A funeral service will be held at the Bethel Church of the Brethren, Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Russell Coulter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Wells/Sheffield Chapel in Lovingston, and all other times at the family residence.
Evelyn Brown Wooldridge
Evelyn Brown Wooldridge, 84, of Lynchburg and formerly of Forest, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in the Medical Care Center.
She was born Nov. 3, 1914 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Hugh Pleasant Brown and Martha Millner Brown. Her husband was the late Earl Wooldridge. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vivian B. Watson, Fey B. and Charles E. Bumgarner all of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 in the Virginia Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert Gochenour.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.
