Col. T.L. Cooper
Col. T.L. Cooper of Roanoke, formerly of residing at Smith Mountain Lake, died Feb. 18, 1999 after a brief hospital stay.
He was born May 1, 1918 in Auglaize County, Ohio and graduated from Harding High School in Marion, Ohio in 1934. Col. Cooper enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was a decorated World War II veteran. During the war he was commissioned an officer and rose to the rank of Colonel during his distinguished 24 years of services in the United States Air Force. Colonel Cooper held a variety of positions while in military service, early in his career he compiled the first Air Force Budget and he completed his service in 1965 as a Congressional Budget Liason for which he received the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Cooper held B.A. & M.A. degrees in Governmental Administration from George Washington University.
Following his retirement from the service, Col. Cooper moved to the newly formed Smith Mountain Lake and built Eagle’s Roost Campground, which he and his family ran for six years. After selling the campground, Col. Cooper moved to Moneta and developed TLC Orchands, which sold blueberries and other fruits. After 15 years as an orchardist, Col. Cooper and his wife retired to Roanoke.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean; two sons, Theodore Cooper Jr., Bellevue, Wash. and daughter-in-law, Karen of Mercer Island, Wash., Capt. William Cooper and daughter-in-law, Sandra (St. Clair) of Fukouka, Japan; three daughters, Constance Kaiser and son-in-law, James of Powhatan, Julia Reinholz and son-in-law, Col. David A. of Frankfurt, Germany, Sarah Curry and son-in-law, David of Stewartsville; also grandchildren, Jeff and Ted Kaiser, Kate and Vicki Reinholz, Curtis and Willie Curry, Robin Cooper, Elizabeth Anderson and Michael Alford and great-grandchildren, Beck Anderson and Jackson Cooper Alford. Survivors also include Col. Coopers step-mother, Nora Cooper and half-brothers, Dave Cooper, Gary Cooper and Thomas Cooper all of Wapakoneta, Ohio and loving nieces, Jean Blake of Boston and Melissa Rowney of Chevy Chase, Md.
A memorial service will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 at the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company Station #1, located on Route 626, 1/4 mile south of the 608 intersection.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House in the name of Willie Curry.

Deacon Ned Earnest Dozier
Deacon Ned Earnest Dozier entered his eternal home on Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at 4:10 a.m. at the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
Ned was born in Williamsburg County, S.C., the son of the late Deacon Willie Bryant Dozier and the late Mrs. Lanie Maxwell Dozier. Ned confessed to Jesus Christ at the age of 12 and joined Marian Baptist Church of Salters, S.C., where he worked faithfully until his departure for college. Ned was a warrior for Jesus Christ and claimed him wherever he went. Ned graduated from Tomlinson High School, Kingstreet, S.C. He matriculated further at South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, S.C. earning a Bachelor degree of Science in Vocational Agriculture. He did graduate work at Salisbury State College, Salisbury, Md., University of Maryland and Virginia Polytechnical Institute, Blacksburg. Ned’s first teaching position was in Moncks Corner Public Schools, Moncks Corner, S.C. He went from there to Dennis High School, Bishopville, S.C., where he stayed for 14 years. While in Bishopville, Ned became affiliated with Mount Hermon Baptist Church, where he became a Deacon and later chairman of the Deacon Board. He also sang with the Mount Hermon Baptist Church Gospel Chorus. From Bishopville, he went to Snow Hill, Md. and taught Vocational Agriculture at Worcester County High School. While in Snow Hill he became affiliated with the Mount Zion Baptist Church. His minister there was Rev. John Woods. He also served on the Deacon Board there. His last teaching position was with Bedford County School from which he retired in 1992 after over 40 years of teaching. During this time he was a member of the Washington Street Baptist Church where he served as Deacon for a number of years. Later he became chairman of the Deacon Board and treasurer of the church. Ned was affiliated with the following organizations: he was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, The Masonic Blue Lodge 244, Advisor for the Future Farmers of America, member of the YMCA, Kingstree, S.C. Ned was a lover of people especially children and never failed to help anyone in need.
He leaves to mourn his death and cherish his memory his loving wife, Gertrude Weston Dozier of Bedford; his loving daughter, Cynthia Dozier Waters Long (Fletcher Long) of Charlotte, N.C.; his loving son, Steven Ernest Dozier and his wife, Valeria D. Dozier of Columbia, S.C.; his loving grandchildren, Kevin DeWayne Waters and wife, Rhonda Peoples Waters of Gainesville, Fla., Kamela Michelle Waters-Grier and husband Daryl Lamont Grier, Kentrell Devon Long and Dira Marie Waters all of Charlotte, N.C., Candice T. Dozier and Kearston D. Dozier both of Columbia, S.C.; one grandson, Bryant Brockington Dozier, who preceded him in death. His great-grandchildren, Shamika M. Waters, Sharron M. Waters and Brianna M. Shell all of Charlotte, N.C. and Kendall J. Grier of Raleigh, N.C.; his brothers, Rannie A. Dozier of Buffalo, N.Y., Robert W. Dozier and wife, Stella Dozier, Lewis C. Dozier and wife, Vickie W. Dozier all of Salters, S.C., Everett B. Dozier of Seldon, N.Y.; his sisters, Janie Parren, Saraphine D. Shaw of Kingstree, S.C. and Clotell D. Matthews of Greeleyville, S.C.; one brother-in-law, Julian C. Weston and his wife, Claudia of Cheraw, S.C.
Funeral services for Deacon Ned E. Dozier of 519 South Street, Bedford, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 at the Washington Street Baptist Church, Bedford.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. A second service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999 at the Marion Baptist Church, Satter, S.C. Interment will follow in the Marian Memorial Garden.

Ruth L. Duffy
Ruth L. Duffy, age 84, of Keysville, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Southside Community Hospital, Farmville, Va., after a short illness.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and June Duffy, of Keysville; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Thomas Guthrie, of Lynchburg; a sister, Jean L. Duffy, of Keysville; four gandchildren, Jackie Hartman, Rhonda Gurthrie, Tina Klacynski, and Carol Rea; and seven great-grandchildren, all of Lynchburg.
Graveside services will be held at the Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999.

William Coty (Bill) Franklin
William Coty (Bill) Franklin, 67, of 1054 Gracefields Road, Rustburg, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at his residence after a long illness. He was the husband of Shirley Cox Franklin.
Born May 20, 1931 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Franklin and Edith Williams Franklin. Bill was a retired brick mason and a loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Vickie F. Hanna and her husband, Richard of Roanoke; four brothers, Lewis Franklin of Rustburg, Ronnie, Thomas and Jim Franklin all of Lynchburg; two sisters, Betty Bryant of Pelham, N.C. and Sarah Roberts of Matthews, N.C.; two grandchildren, William Ooten of Rustburg and Rickie Hanna of Roanoke and three great-granddaughters, Anna Ooten, Emily Ooten and Sarah Ooten all of Stoneboro, Pa.
A memorial celebration of Bill’s life will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel conducted by Dr. Jerry Falwell.

Laura V. Hamlett, 85, of Cullen, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara H. and Dayton Dunnavant of Cullen; three sons, Wesley G. and wife, Arlean Hamlett of Pamplin, Aubrey E. Jr. and wife, Beverly Hamlett of Cullen and Ronnie V. Hamlett of Forest; one sister, Elizabeth Williamson of Red House; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.

Dorothy McCraw Lacks
Dorothy McCraw Lacks, 83, of The Oaks, formally of 1920 Mimosa Drive, passed into eternity Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Norwood Lacks who preceded her in death May 30, 1998.
Mrs. Lacks was born in Lynchburg, Aug. 10, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel S. McCraw and the late Lula P. McCraw. She was a lifetime member of Inglewood Baptist Church and a retired employee of Leggetts Department Store.
She is survived by one sister, Jane Kent of Dover, Del. and many loving and caring nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel with Dr. Jim Stevens officiating. Interment will be private in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Thomas Jefferson Moorefield
Thomas Jefferson Moorefield, 88, of 218 W. Spencer Road, Hurt, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mozelle Waller Moorefield.
Born March 14, 1910 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Silas Carrington Moorefield and Bessie Hodges Moorefield. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and a retired employee of The Lane Company.
He is survived by two daughters, Martha M. Patterson of Lynchburg and Kathryn M. Hendericks of Fort Worth; one brother, Raleigh C. Moorefield of Nathalie; two sisters, Lizzie M. LaPrade and Julia M. Wood both of Lynchburg; four grandsons and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Burton, Paul, Oscar, Henry and S.C. Moorefield Jr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 in New Prospect Baptist Church by the Rev. Brady Willis. Burial will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

Margaret Bostian Stone
Margaret Bostian Stone, 85, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Eugene Louis Stone.
Born in Hamlet, N.C., July 4, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Annie Currie Bostian. Mrs. Stone was a retired beautician and had worked at Cleary’s Beauty Shop for many years. She later volunteered her time and services to both the Lynchburg Nursing Home and the Carrington for 19 years. She was also an active member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Nichols and her husband, Ermon of Greensboro, N.C. and Rebecca Martin and her husband, Duval of Lynchburg; two brothers, Fred Bostian of Md. and David Bostian of N.C.; two sisters, Gloria Greenwood of Colo. and Ruth Weil of N.C., four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Nolan R. Crowder and the Rev. Carlton Duck officiating.

Reva Mayhew Dudley
Reva Mayhew Dudley, 76, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at Camelot Hall Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Louie Edward Dudley.
Born June 9, 1922 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late David Albert and Ella Thompson Mayhew. Mrs. Dudley was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Dudley Brooks Wood; three brothers, Emory W. Mayhew, Hubert C. Mayhew and David B. Mayhew and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Creasy.
Mrs. Dudley is survived by two sons, Vernon E. Dudley and his wife, Karen of Concord and B. David Dudley of Lynchburg; two daughters, Janet D. Litchford and her husband, Warren of Amherst and Mary D. Perry A. Langford
Perry A. Langford, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ruby Harrison Langford.
Born in Bedford County, the son of the late Alton M. and Lenna Webber Langford. He was a member of North Bedford Baptist Church, a retired electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth W. Langford and two brothers, Morris A. Langford and Herbert R. Langford.
He is survived by a granddaughter, Robyn Schaible and her husband, Tom of N.J.; two sisters, Clara L. Page and Ruby L. Miear of Lynchburg; three nieces, Linda Evans, Teresa Martin and Joanne Hepler and two nephews, Donald Cheatham and Ray Langford.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at North Bedford Baptist Church, Forest by the Rev. Charles L. Stinson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Oliver Wayne Lineberg
Oliver Wayne Lineberg, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ruth Gans Lineberg.
Oliver was born in Morgantown, W.Va., Aug. 19, 1913. He was the son of the late Oliver and Lessie Lineberg. Mr. Lineberg was retired having worked as an Assistant Commissioner in the Department of the Environment with the State of Virginia, in 1976 he was awarded as the Soil Conservationist of the Year by the National & Virginia Wildlife Federation. Mr. Lineberg was a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda L. Burnett of Lynchburg; three cousins, Estol and his wife, Gyla Gans and their son, Mark Gans all of Morgantown, W.Va.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Cemetery by the Rev. James M. Tongue.

Carrington Phillip Roach
GRETNA — Carrington Phillip Roach, 17, of 204 Toney Street, Gretna, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999.
Born March 23, 1981 in Danville, he was a son of Phillip Lee Roach of the residence and Sharon Trent Runyon of Gretna. He was a member of the Gretna Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his step-mother, Sheila Tate Roach of the residence; paternal grandmother, Agnes Roach of Chatham; paternal great-grandmother, Lena Custer of Gretna; three sisters, Heather Roach, Mallory Roach and Esther Shallenberger all of the residence; one brother, Matthew Shallenberger of Gretna.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at Colbert-Moran Chapel. Interment will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

Jesse Lee Self
Jesse Lee Self, 79, of 1563 Old Rustburg Road, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of the late Jeannie Elliott Self.
Born Oct. 12, 1919 in Durham, N.C., he was a son of the late William Thomas and Annie Mason Self. He was retired from the Lynchburg Foundry, Lower Basin and proudly served his country with the United States Army during World War II, surviving Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Irvin Self; one half brother, Samuel P. Holder and four half sisters, Florence Dowdy, Geneva Bates, Bertie Purvis and Bessie Holder.
Jesse is survived by one son, Bill Self and his wife, Linda of Concord; one daughter, Sharon Self Pollard of Lynchburg; one brother, Henry T. Self of Alexandria; one sister, Deane Walker of Fruitland Park, Fla. and five grandchildren, Greg Self, Billy Self, Candice Self, Ryan Pollard and Seth Hitchman.
Jesse’s request was to be cremated and his cremated remains be entombed with his wife Jean, who passed away in Jan. of this year.
Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mausoleum Chapel of Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post #16.
The family will receive friends at the home of his son Bill, 840 Doss Road, Concord from 7-9 p.m. tonight.

Eleen Lucas Sibold
Eleen Lucas Sibold, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 in Lovingston.
Born in Roanoke, April 25, 1911, she was the fourth and last surviving child of the late Ashby Ernest Lucas and Elizabeth Spitler Lucas. She was the widow of Robert Nelson Sibold. Mrs. Sibold was a homemaker and a caregiver to many family members.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Ray Hunt of Nellysford; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Melissa Sibold of Marietta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Mary Beth Cardin of South Glastonbury, Conn., Corbin Hunt of Charlottesville, Margaret Hunt of Baltimore, Md., Peter Hunt of Houston, Texas, Katie Sibold and Christopher Sibold of Marietta, Ga. and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville with Dr. Thomas Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.

Avis Whorley Thomas
Avis Whorley Thomas, 82, of Evington, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at the Medical Care Center after a long illness. She was the wife of Floyd Allen Thomas for 53 years.
Mrs. Thomas was born in Bedford County, Feb. 18, 1916 to the late David Henry and Mary Alice Witt Whorley. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Evington, a housewife and the former co-owner and operator of Thomas Grocery Store.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Thomas Lambert of Lynchburg; a sister, Vernelle W. Granger of Rustburg; a brother, Cecil Kyle Whorley of Goode.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Whorley and Audrey W. Hicks; five brothers, Carlton C. Whorley, Paul R. Whorley, Thornton E. Whorley, Aubrey M. Whorley and David H. Whorley Jr.

Shirley Johnson Worley
Shirley Johnson Worley, 70, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Julian Holcomb Worley Sr.
Shirley was born April 26, 1928 in Campbell County, the daughter of the late Augustus L. Johnson and Mary Ruth Mayberry Johnson Mosby. She was a member of Campbell Avenue Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew G. Cunningham and one sister, Katherine J. Ballowe.
She is survived by one son, Julian H. Worley Jr.; two daughters, Joan L. Worley and Barbara W. Cunningham and her husband, Pete and one grandson, Gregory S. Cunningham and his wife, Heather all of Lynchburg.

Helen Julia Driscoll Baker, 81, of 716 Erskine Avenue, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999 after a long illness.
Born December 22, 1917 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late James Augusta and Bell Moon Driscoll.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pendelton S. Baker; two brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by four children, Catherine B. Burford, Diane B. Gowen, Richard C. Baker and Warren A. Baker; one sister, Agnes Baber and a close friend, Verne Lemke, all of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be private. The children will receive friends at their individual residences.

Hester Puckette Coleman, 82, of 721 Rockbridge Ave., Lynchburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Avante of Lynchburg.
Born March 10, 1916, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late William Henry Puckette and Willie Pillow Puckette.
She was retired from Lynchburg General Hospital and a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, William Price Coleman of Lynchburg, and L.C. Booth and his wife, Linda of Concord; two grandsons, Gregory Booth of San Diego, Calif. and Gary Booth of Rustburg; one brother, David J. Puckette of Gladys; two sisters, Mary P. Chaplin of Waynesboro, and Virginia P. Reynolds of Lynchburg, three great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Frances Bolton.

Robert Tillman Collier, 65, of Big Island, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born in Lynchburg July 5, 1933, a son of Elva Abbott Collier Ayers of Big Island and the late Robert Dorsey Collier. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict and a retired truck driver.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce C. Layne.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Thomas D. Collier of Bedford; three sisters, Shelby C. Becker of Brandenton, Fla., Violet C. Cassidy of Moneta and Mary Lou C. Robertson of Charlotte, N.C.; a close friend and former wife, Ethel W. Collier; six stepchildren, Robert Goff, Sue Windsor, Warren Goff, Stephen Goff, Ruth Arthur and Hubert Goff; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Reva Mayhew Dudley, 76, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 at Camelot Hall Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Louie Edward Dudley.
Born June 9, 1922 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late David Albert and Ella Thompson Mayhew. Mrs. Dudley was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Dudley Brooks Wood; three brothers, Emory W. Mayhew, Hubert C. Mayhew and David B. Mayhew and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Creasy.

Amherst - Frank Lee Floyd, 73, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born March 3, 1925 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Frank Cornelius Floyd and the late Nell Hayslett Floyd Woodson. He was retired from the retail grocery business and was a dedicated game fowl breeder. He served on the U.S.S. McConnell as a Pearl Harbor volunteer in the Pacific during World War II receiving a battlefield promotion to Third Class Petty Officer. He was a member of the VFW Post 9877 in Amherst.
In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Carl (Bonnie) Davis of Lowesville, Mrs. Victoria Lyons of Naola, Mrs. R. G. (Rebecca) Bryant of Madison Heights, Mrs. Everett (Tracy) Beach of Monroe; and four grandchildren, Cody Bryant, Kelly Davis, Robbie Higginbotham, Charles Hart.

Vicki Drinkard Grubbs, 35, of Forest, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Deacon John Tyler Morris Sr., of 913 Early Street, husband of Dorothy Graham Morris and son of the late Ezra Lee and Rosa Taylor Morris, departed this life Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born September 14, 1933, in Lynchburg, he was graduated from Dunbar High School and Phillips Business College. John served four years n the U.S Navy, was a U.S. Postal employee for 35 years and was chairman of the Deacon Board of Antioch Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine M. Taylor and a brother, Ezra L. Morris.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John Tyler Morris Jr. and Ivan Bernard Morris; a granddaughter, Kiara C. Morris; two sisters, Florine M. Hubbard and Alice M. (George) Perry; and a brother Michael (Dennis) Morris. He is also survived by two god-children, Stephanie Brown Blake of Atlanta, Ga., and Marcus Williams of Pine Hill, N.J. and a devoted family friend who has been like a daughter, Darlene McCoy Dixon, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., today at Antioch Baptist Church in Coleman Falls with the Rev. James D. Braxton officiating, and the Rev. Dorn Lewis, eulogist.

Otho Nichols, 73, of New Orleans, La. and formerly of Huddleston, passed away Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999. He was born in Bedford County, a son of the late Jesse Harvey Nichols and Lillian Aliff Nichols.

Rev. William E. Weaver
Jim Weaver, 79, of Evington, departed this life Tuesday, February 16, 1999, at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond.
He was a minister of the Church of God, recently retired, and a member of Mountain View Church of God. Mr. Weaver was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of Melrose Masonic Lodge 139 AF&AM, and a member of Moose Lodge 1727.
Born in Montgomery County, March 22, 1919, he was the son of the late Asa and Virginia Weaver. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.
Rev. Weaver is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Parks Weaver; his only child, a daughter, Carole W. Wade and her husband, Donald R. Wade of Lynchburg. He is also survived by three grandsons and their wives, Michael R. Wade and his wife, Lynn, Terrell L. Wade and his wife, Kelly, and William Chris Wade. He is also survived by his beloved great-grandson, Kevin Michael Wade, all of Lynchburg, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Simmie Foster Davis, 81, of Howard P. Anderson Road, Crystal Hill, died February 15, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Terrell Wayne Schmitt
Terrell Wayne “Terry” Schmitt, 49 of Elizabeth City, N.C. died Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at the Albermarle Hospital. Mr. Schmitt was a native of Lynchburg, a technical writer for T.AMSCO, retired from the U.S. Coast Guard, President of the Chief Petty Officers Association, and an avid softball player.
Mr. Schmitt was the husband of Georgia Ayers Schmitt of the residence and the son of Ernest Terrell Schmitt, Jr. and Carolyn Almond Schmitt of Roanoke. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Nicole Schmitt of the residence; a sister, Lisa S. Conroy of Roanoke, one niece, three nephews and many loving friends.

Tate Estelle Shelton of Lynchburg died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born September 29, 1911 in Chatham, the daughter of the late Ernest Martin Shelton and Callie Lowe Shelton of Pittsylvania County. She worked at Craddock & Terry Shoe Corporation where she was a member of the Quarter Century Club and retired from the business office at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was a member of the Odd Fellows Fairview Rebekah Lodge 52 and Fairview United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three sisters, Ruth William Iseman of Lynchburg, Rebecca Frances Shelton of Baltimore, Md., and Pansy Eleanor St. Clair of Lynchburg; several nieces and one great-nephew.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Tom Lesh.

Robert Tillman Collier, 65, of Big Island, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born in Lynchburg July 5, 1933, a son of Elva Abbott Collier Ayers of Big Island and the late Robert Dorsey Collier. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict and a retired truck driver.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce C. Layne.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Thomas D. Collier of Bedford; three sisters, Shelby C. Becker of Brandenton, Fla., Violet C. Cassidy of Moneta and Mary Lou C. Robertson of Charlotte, N.C.; a close friend and former wife, Ethel W. Collier; six stepchildren, Robert Goff, Sue Windsor, Warren Goff, Stephen Goff, Ruth Arthur and Hubert Goff; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Richard Henry Ford, 82, of Roanoke, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 in Roanoke Community Hospital.
Born in Madison Heights, August 25, 1916, he was a son of the late Theodore Madison Ford and Kate Stanley Ford. Mr. Ford was retired from Mack Truck Plant.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Alma F. Crist and two brothers, Howard C. Ford and W. Edward Ford.
Mr. Ford is survived by one sister, Madeline F. Engle of Vinton; four nieces, Nancy F. Ayers of Madison Heights, Katherine E. Kelley of Vinton, Nancy E. Graham of Christiansburg and Kimberly F. McClary of Burke; and one nephew, Jerry Engle of Roanoke.

Hilda Everett Mawyer
LOVINGSTON - Hilda Everett Mawyer, 93, of Rocky Road, Lovingston died Sunday morning, Feb. 14, 1999 in Martha Jefferson Hospital after a very brief illness.
Born Dec. 9, 1905 in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Edward W. Mawyer and Lucy Harris Mawyer. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Howard Thomas Mawyer on March 12, 1983. She was also preceded in death by seven of her brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Mawyer attended Nelson County Schools and graduated as Valedictorian of her class, attended State Teachers College in Harrisonburg and taught school in Nelson County at Montebello, Shipman and Adial Schools for many years before her marriage.
She was a lifelong member of Adial Baptist Church at Faber.
She is survived by her daughters Priscilla A. Mawyer of Lovingston, Catherine M. Mummau of Faber and Nancy M. Sapp of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Mary M. Dodd of Nellysford along with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today in Adial Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Bushong officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

Roger Lee Meeks, 53, of Gladys, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia Moorman Meeks.
Born in Lynchburg July 8, 1945, he was a son of Howard L. and Beatrice Mitchell Meeks of Lynchburg. Mr. Meeks was retired from Allen-Morrison Sign Company and attended Calvary United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Daryl M. Meeks of Gladys and two brothers, Eugene Owen Meeks of Madison Heights and H.L. Meeks of Forest.

Ernest William Mitchell
Ernest William Mitchell of 913 Sanhill Drive, Lynchburg, died Sunday, February 14, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Hortense Miller Mitchell for 49 years.
Mr. Mitchell was born July 12, 1924 in Bedford County to the late Herbert L. and Beulah Mitchell. He was a devoted Christian who accepted Christ at an early age. Mr. Mitchell was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. He was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church where he served as deacon and was active on various committees. He founded Mitchell Insurance Agency and was an Independent Agent who served his clients faithfully from 1954 until his death. He was a past member of the National Association of Life Underwriters.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Rev. William J. Mitchell, a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and John Sparks, a daughter, Kaye Howard, a grandson, Jonathan Sparks and a granddaughter, Lauren Howard, all of Lynchburg; one brother, Clyde Mitchell and his wife Virginia, two sisters, Clara Garnett and Doris Craig, all of Bedford; two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Mitchell of Richmond and Helen Mitchell of Lynchburg; and a devoted secretary of many years, Bettie Bomar of Lynchburg. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel with the Rev. James D. Newman officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Maggie Harvey Morris of Washington, D.C. departed this life Feb. 11, 1999 after a long illness.
She was born in Campbell County Feb. 15, 1915, the daughter of the late Lee Thomas and Martha Moore Harvey. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Cleveland and Lee Harvey; five sisters, Mammie Duiguid, Nannie Kate Duiguid, Mary Ruth Campbell, Betsy Harvey and Hattie Belle Witherspoon. She attended Pilot Mt. Baptist Church and Campbell County public schools.
She is survived by a son, James Edward (Dick) Harvey of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Margaret Brooks Bass, 84, of Gladys, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 in Sentara Hampton General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Walter Barksdale Bass, Sr.
Born Aug. 24, 1914 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late John Lawson Brooks and Annie Marshall Brooks.
She was a member of Kedron Baptist Church and a 1931 graduate of Gladys High School, where she was an avid participant in basketball and track.
Mrs. Bass also attended Phillips Business College in Lynchburg.
She is survived by two sons, Walter B. Bass, Jr. and his wife Lou Ann of Gladys and Dr. John M. Bass of South Hill; one daughter, Carolyn Bass Witherspoon and her husband John of Hampton; one brother, Lawson Brooks of Gladys; two sisters, Madeline Wingfield of Lynchburg and Rachel Coates of Radford; seven grandchildren, Jim Witherspoon of Hampton, Elizabeth W. Hubbard and her husband Tim of South Riding, W.B. Bass, III and his wife Dona of Gladys, Leanne Bass of Forest, Allen Bass of Blacksburg, Jay Bass of Christiansburg, and Jeff Bass of Charlottesville; and one great-grandson, Hunter Bass of Gladys.

Frederick Whitfield Brightwell, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999. He was the son of the late Edgar W. Brightwell and Edna St.John Brightwell.
Frederick was born in Lynchburg on May 16, 1910.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the Corps of Engineers, and also was a retired Virginia State employee.
He is survived by three sisters, Hazel B. Keyes and Mozelle B. Parker of Lynchburg, and Louise B. Clingempeel of Concord.

Born in Campbell County on Dec. 2, 1912 he was a son of the late John William Callahan and Susan Catherine Hall Callahan and was the husband of Martha Frances Sims Callahan.
Mr. Callahan was a army veteran having served during WW II.
He was a retired superintendent with the J. R. Ford Paving Co. and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Brenda Jean Rucker Daniel
In the stillness of the night, the welcoming voice of our heavenly father called to rest our beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and beloved friend, Brenda Jean Rucker Daniel. After a lengthy illness, she departed this life Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born June 1, 1947 in Lynchburg. She was the daughter of the late William R. Rucker and the late Harriette Emma Tapley Rucker. She was employed by Central Virginia Training Center for 23 years. She was also a member of White Rock Baptist Church.
She leaves to mourn a husband, Charles Duvall Daniel of Capital Heights, Md.; two loving sisters, Julie Scott and Alice Monroe of Lynchburg; three loving daughters, Nina, Kim, and Kina Daniel, and one step-son Tim Jackson all of Lynchburg. Five wonderful grandchildren Khalil, Zachary, Dhakiya, Shakiera, and Taylor, all of Lynchburg. A very loving and devoted friend Mr. Frank E. Anderson and son-in-law Frank E. Tucker and a host of very dear relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, 3 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Reeves officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The cortege will assemble at 2204 Preston Street. Community Funeral Home directing.
Jacob Ryan Feinman
Jacob Ryan Feinman, born Nov. 29, 1998 of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 at the UVA Hospital in Charlottesville.
His parents are Paul J. Feinman and Paula J. Ryan of Lynchburg. He is the grandson of Thomas J. Ryan and Nancy T. Ryan of Newton, Mass., and Mrs. Edward R. Feinman of Lynchburg and the late Edward R. Feinman. He is also survived by his great-grandmother, Zelda T. Oppleman, a sister, Emma R. Feinman and a brother Matthew R. Feinman all of Lynchburg.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Monday, Feb. 15, 1999 at 1 p.m.
Friends and family will be received on today, Feb. 14, 1999, between 4 and 6 p.m. at the Whitten Park Avenue Chapel, and on Monday, Feb. 15, 1999 at 1225 Sarah Lynch Place after the memorial service.

Edward Thomas (Ted) Hapgood
Edward Thomas (Ted) Hapgood, 85, of 2448 Hawthorne Road, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He is the husband of Ruth Sweetser Hapgood.
Born in Wallingford, Conn., May 4, 1913, he was the son of the late William Henry Hapgood and Alice LaDow Hapgood.
He graduated from the Albany Academy, Albany N.Y. in 1931 and earned his BA in English from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. in 1935. During World War II he served his country in the Pacific Theatre as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was a Sales Representative for Yeardley of London and a Sales Representative for, and, subsequently, General Manager of Old Dominion Box Co. For 24 years, until his retirement in 1985, he served in several positions with C.B. Fleet Co., including its President/C.E.O. and Chairman of the Board.
Characteristic of his passion for helping others, Ted was active in a number of state and community associations and committees. He was past president of the Greater Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce and past chairman of the Virginia Manufacturers’ Association. He served on the boards of the Piedmont Heart Association, Legal Aid Society, the Virginia Council on Health and Medical Care, the Board of Overseers of Lynchburg College, the President’s Advisory Board of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, the Advisory Committee of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the United Way of Central Virginia where he was campaign chairman in 1978. He had been an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
He was an avid children’s story teller and at the urging of his children, wrote and published “The Adventures of Gideon”, a collection of original stories about a personable bug, his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Ted is survived by three children, Edward T. (Tim) Hapgood, Jr. and his wife Helen, of Sunapee, N.H., Sue Satterfield and her husband Bob, of Wintergreen, Va. and Nancy Hapgood of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Alice Howard of Darien, Conn.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Susie Frances Harris
Susie Frances Harris, 74, of 3632 Putnam Street died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Moorman Cox and Myrtle Lee Hall Cox and was the widow of Robert L. Harris, Sr.
Mrs. Harris was retired from the Pettyjohn Shoe Factory and was a member of Evington United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children; Robert L. Harris, Jr. and his wife Joan of Rustburg, Virginia H. Smith of Lynchburg, Ethel H. Rivers and her husband Frederick of Clarksville, Tenn. and Jimmy Granville of St. Joseph, Mo.; four sisters, Ruby Alice Walden of Evington, Nannie Smith of Gladys, Elizabeth Barley of Altavista and Betty Jean Adkins of Evington. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday in Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with Dr. Wayne Greene officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 2-4 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Inez Moore Inge, 93, of South Boston, died Feb. 13, 1999 at the Woodview.
She is survived by a son, Douglas B. Inge of Nathalie.

Sue Brooke Pruett Jenks
Sue Brooke Pruett Jenks, 81, of Lynchburg died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 at Camelot Hall Nursing Home after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was the wife of Carroll Charles Jenks of Lynchburg.
Born in King & Queen County, Oct. 22, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Silas W. and Susie Barefoot Pruett. Mrs. Jenks was retired from the office of Dr. William Riggins and was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Robert W. Jenks and his wife, Hayla of Franktown, Colo.; two daughters, Carol J. Wilson and her husband Sam of Lynchburg and Connie J. Sanders and her husband Dixon of Forest; one brother, Lewis Pruett and his wife, Marie of Richmond; seven grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
One sister, Mary P. Bahen; one brother, John Pruett and a son-in-law, Robert C. Ware, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Grover Putnam and Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy, Jr. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her daughter Carol, 108 Eisenhower Dr., Lynchburg.

GLADSTONE - Frank Watts Jones, 56, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 7, 1943 in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Albert Franklin and Annie Tyree Jones. He attended Bethel Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Mark Anthony Jones of Manteo, N. C.; two daughters, Kimberly Carwile and husband, Dewey, and Shelia Davis and husband Paul, both of Gladys; three sisters, Evelyn Campbell of Amherst, Clara Hudson and husband, Billy and Viola Cox and husband John, both of Gladstone; one brother, Dorman Jones and wife Patricia of Gladstone, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Driskill Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dave Peters officiating. Burial will follow in the Mineral Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

Betty Arthur Mayberry
Betty Arthur Mayberry, 70, of 419 Grove Street, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 at her home. She was the wife of the late Ernest W. Mayberry.
Born June 9, 1928 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of Christine Mitchell Arthur of Lynchburg and the late James Essex Arthur.
In addition to her husband and father, she was preceded in death by a sister, June Adkins.
In addition to her mother, Betty is survived by a sister, Nancy Arthur Colbert and her husband, Donald of Annapolis, Md.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. Betty Scott, of 955 Randolph Lane, Lynchburg, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 in Lynchburg.
Born in Washington, D.C. she was the daughter of the late David (Doc) Bolding and the late Estelle Bolding. Her husband was the late George William Scott. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Mrs. Betty Marie Stamps and Mrs. Joyce Ann Stewart, both of Lynchburg; a brother, Thomas Bolding and his wife Alberta of Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Marvin Stamps, and Mrs. Shirley Jackson and her husband, Rev. Nathaniel Jackson, all of Portsmouth, Mrs. Tanya Jones and her husband Troy, and Rayvenelle Stewart, III, all of Orlando, Fla., and Ms. Sandy Stewart of Lynchburg; seven great-grandchildren, Miss Ayanna Stamps, Michael Stamps, and Brandy Stamps, all of Gladys, Christopher Stewart of Orlando Fla., Quincey Stewart of Lynchburg, Nathaniel Jackson, III and Jonathan Jackson, both of Portsmouth; one nephew, Larry Bolding of Philadelphia, Pa.; a devoted granddaughter-in-law, Ms. Denise Stamps of Gladys, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
The family is receiving friends at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Betty Marie Stamps, 1216 Moseley Drive, Apt. 3, Lynchburg.

William D. (Biggie) Smith
William D. (Biggie) Smith departed this life Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 in Washington, D.C. after a long illness.
He was born Jan. 28, 1918 in Lynchburg, the son of the late James A. and Laura Bolden Smith.
He is survived by a son, Clarence Smith of Patterson, N.J.; two brothers, Wilson R. Smith and wife Marie of Forest and Calvin K. L. Smith of Lynchburg; a sister Elaine Johnson of Lynchburg and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Marian Jackson Vaughn
Marian Jackson Vaughn, 82, died Wednesday at Caritas Medical Center.
She was a native of Lynchburg, a retired traffic clerk for Wave-3 where she worked for 26 years, and a Presbyterian.
Survivors include a niece and nephew, Phillipa A. Smith and William J. Allen, Jr. and friends; Bob and Edna Rohleder, both of whom cared for her.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heady-Willhite-Ballard Funeral Home, Middletown, Ky. Burial will be Monday, 2 p.m. in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg.

Clyde Francis Walthall
Clyde Francis Walthall, 74, of Route 2, Evington, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 in Avante at Lynchburg. He was a husband of the late Janie Cross Walthall.
Born Feb. 4, 1925 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Ernest and Carrie Francis Walthall. He was a member of the Altavista Church of Christ and a retired employee of Norfolk Southern Railway.
He is survived by one son, Steven C. Walthall of Madison Heights; one brother, Addison Walthall of Gladys; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Altavista Church of Christ from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 1999. The funeral service will follow at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Lory Brafford and Ray Eure. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kedron Baptist Church Cemetery in Gladys.

James Edmond Worsham, 69, of 12608 Rockford School Road, Gretna, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999 at his home.
Born Dec. 6, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Edmond and Allie Lane Worsham. He was a member of Whitehall Baptist Church in Maryland and a self-employed paint contractor.
He is survived by two daughters, Rosemarie Roby and Susan Frances Smith, both of Lothian, Md.; three grandchildren; two aunts, Louise Crews of Gretna and Virginia Ruth Linskey of Arlington; two nephews, Gary Adriani and Mark Adriani, both of Maryland; three cousins, Kaye Crews, Clay Crews, and Butch Crews; and many friends and family members.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Dorothy Brown Wright, 82, of Lynchburg, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 at Jefferson Park Center.
Born in Buckingham County, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Lucretia Brown. She was the wife of the late Millard Wright.
Survivors include her daughters, Katherine Jackson, Emma Day, Edna Wright and Glenna Jordan; one brother, Luke Brown and his wife Estelle. Her beloved grandchildren, Curtis Wright and his wife Kim, Charles Day, Jr., Ramona Patrick and Eduardo Jordon; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Roach, Martha Boulware and a host of other relatives and friends.
We give thanks to God for her life and she will be remembered with love and affection by her family.
