Mayme Driskill Atkinson, 95, of Lynchburg, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Howard Stanley Atkinson. Mrs. Atkinson was born Aug. 3, 1903 in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late Daniel Armistead Driskill and Nannie Bell Driskill. She was born and raised in Lynchburg then moved to Mount Holly, N.J. where she worked for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Co., retiring with 42 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. After retirement she moved to North Redington Beach, Fla. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Burlington, N.J. and the Cornerstone Community Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. She is survived by a step-daughter, Frances Adams of Beverly, N.J.; a niece, Marynette Burnett and her husband, Joseph of Lynchburg; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rachel Driskill and Mrs. Margurite “Rita” Driskill of Lynchburg, several nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends in Lynchburg, N.J. and Fla. She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Burlington, N.J. Helen Toler Clarke
Helen Toler Clarke of 3395 Mt. Olivet Road, Martinsville, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999 at her residence. Born Jan. 26, 1918 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Hughie Charles Toler and Ruth Wilson Toler. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olivet Christian Church. Survivors include her husband, Rexford C. Clarke; two brothers, Raymond Toler, Hugh C. Toler both of Lynchburg, five nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley T. Marsh. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services Chapel by the Rev. Jim Alsop. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. Madolyn Rutledge Cunningham
WEBER CITY — Madolyn R. Cunningham, 75, of Weber City, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Mrs. Cunningham was born in Washington County, April 6, 1923, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Pearle Smith Rutledge. She was a retired bank manager with Sovran and Nations Banks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virginia State Trooper Clifford G. Cunningham, three sisters and four brothers. Mrs. Cunningham is survived by her very beloved friend and companion, Jack DeBusk, Damascus; two daughters, Martha “Marti” Whitt, Weber City and Glenda Thompson, Clarksville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Donna Mountcastle-Adams, Jerel Mountcastle, Julia Whitt and C.J. Whitt; two great-grandchildren, Patrick Adams and Amanda Adams; two sisters, Virginia Adams and Joan Dean both of Damascus and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of her daughter, Marti Whitt. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home by the Rev. Robert Thornton. Born in Lynchburg, March 26, 1922, he was the son of the late James Pollard and Lillian Pollard Johnson. He was the stepson of John Johnson of Washington, D.C. He was the husband of the late Lillian Scott Pollard. CHARLOTTESVILLE — Eunice Norvell Purvis, 83, of Arlington, Texas and formerly of Charlottesville, died Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 1999 in Arlington. Born May 21, 1915 at Red Hill “Albemarle County”, a daughter of the late Olie S. Norvell and Lelia Mawyer Norvell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Banks Purvis on Feb. 27, 1968. She was a member of Lake Arlington Baptist Church and a former member of Jefferson Park Baptist Church in Charlottesville. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra P. Young and husband, Tom of Arlington; two sons, Willie B. Purvis and wife, Bonnie of Mission Viego, Calif. and Douglas H. Purvis and wife, Prisella of Houston, Texas; a sister, Lois Norvell Wheeler of Keswick; six grandchildren, Kristi, Kevin, Kathryn, Mark, Matthew and Horace; two great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Danny. Virginia Lee Sullivan Schultze, 68, of 1120 Ashley Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of Ernest Henry Schultze. Born in Baltimore, Md., she was a daughter of the late Lewis Kenneth Sullivan and Margaret Mae Bell Sullivan. Mrs. Schultze attended the Lutheran Church and was a retired registered nurse. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Anthony Schultze of Waukegan, Ill. and Michael Brian Schultze of Waldorf, Md.; a brother, Lewis K. Sullivan Jr. of Oxford, Md. and a sister, Martha Ellen Salvador of Turlock, Calif. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. John Herman. Walter Roger Spinner of Big Island, departed this life Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 in University of Virginia. Born Feb. 13, 1954, he was the son of Mrs. Louise D. Spinner and the late Walter C. Spinner. In addition to his mother, his former wife, Barbara Spinner; two sons, Craig Banks and Steven Stranbridge and one stepdaughter, Tomica Smith survive him. Also three sisters, Peggy Douglas, Darlene Spinner and Nancy Calloway; two brothers, Billy J. Spinner and wife, Estelle and Jimmy W. Spinner and wife, Sharon and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Stallings officiating. Michael Scott Turner
Funeral services for Michael Scott Turner, 21, of Monroe, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today by Pastor Ken Payne at Whitten Monelison Chapel with interment to follow in El Bethel U.M. Church Cemetery, Allwood. Scott was born April 15, 1977 in Lynchburg, son of James R. (Jimmie) and Naomi Turner. He was employee of Davis H. Elliott, Co., Inc. and was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Scott is survived by his girlfriend, two sisters and brothers-in-law, three brothers and sisters-in-law, 11 nieces and nephews, five aunts and many beloved cousins and friends.

Doris Hudson Wiesener
Doris Hudson Wiesener, 75, of 258 Mountain View Drive, Madison Heights, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Monroe, March 8, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John Albert and Janie Garrett Hudson. She was married to W.B. “Bill” Wiesener and was a graduate of Madison Heights High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monore. She and her husband lived in Spencer, N.C. for a number of years, where she was active in a number of political, local and civic affairs. Doris was a member of the Jack A. Hutchins American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as Secretary-Treasurer, a member of the International Association of Machinists Auxiliary, President of the Spencer Junior Woman’s Club and President of the Salisbury Credit Women’s Breakfast Club for two years. Doris was a bookkeeper for Rowan’s Drug Company in Salisbury before moving to Atlanta, Ga. in 1962, where she was a Statistical Analyst Clerk in the central accounting office for the Georgia Marble Company before retiring and moving back to Va. in 1984. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth H. Bellegia, Virginia H. McCord and Beatrice H. Mills. In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by two brothers, John A. “Chief” Hudson of Lynchburg and Curtis Calvin Hudson of Waterloo, N.Y.; three sisters, Odell H. Candler of Silver Spring, Md., Irene H. Neal of Hickory, N.C. and Marie H. Bibb of Madison Heights. There were no children, but a number of nieces and nephews she dearly loved. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Glynn Coleman. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence. Gladys Irene Almond
Gladys Irene Almond, 75, of 83 Leesville Hill Road, Evington, formerly of Spout Spring, died Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Irene was born in Appomattox County, March 7, 1923, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Mary Bertha Ferguson Almond. She was a homemaker, a member of Spout Spring Baptist Church and a retired employee of Appomattox Garment Co. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Margaret A. Martin, Alice A. Mayhew and a brother, Dewey C. Almond. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Virginia A. Smith of Appomattox and her brother, Twyman B. Almond of Evington and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Victor Nas and the Rev. Maurice T. McCarthy Jr. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery. Arnold Meredith Arthur
Arnold Meredith Arthur, 88, of Coleman Falls, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 in Oakwood Manor from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was born Dec. 22, 1910 in Bedford County, a son of the late Allie Van Arthur and Lucie Inge Arthur. He was the husband of Eva B. Arthur of Coleman Falls. He is survived by two stepdaughters, Grace Ann McNeely of Coleman Falls and Betty Lou Lipscomb of Forest; a niece, Marian Dudley of Md.; a great niece, Allison Abrahamson of Chicago, Ill.; three great nephews, Kevin Dudley of Md., Barry Arthur and Phillip Arthur both of Forest; two step grandsons, Wayne Sale of Ga. and Charles McNeely of Coleman Falls; one step granddaughter, Cindy Arrington of Lynchburg and two step great-granddaughters, Sonya Woodworth and Chasity Carter both of Amherst. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step grandson, Larry Lipscomb; a nephew, Frank W. Arthur Jr.; a sister, Elvyn Arthur and three brothers, Frank Arthur Sr., Kelley Arthur and Harold Arthur. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 at Virginia Memorial Park. Richard (Goose) Braxton of Rt. 1, Box 241, Amherst, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home. Born in Amherst, he was the son of the late Frank and Grace Braxton Toliver. He leaves to cherish his memory seven brothers and sisters, Charles H. Braxton, Bobby Braxton, Preston Eugene Braxton, Mrs. Katy Spinner, Ms. Catherine Braxton and Mrs. Georgia Douglas all of Amherst and Ms. Helen Braxton of Washington, D.C. and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Born in Campbell County, June 24, 1908, he was a son of the late Charlie and Addie Neighbors Carroll. Mr. Carroll was a member of Brookhill Wesleyan Church. He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Maddox of Amherst; two sons, George Carroll of Lynchburg and Kenneth Carroll of Forest; one brother, Russell Carroll of Baltimore, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ruth Jones Carter of 1902 Grace Street, departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home. Born in Beaver Dam, Va., she was the daughter of the late Isaac William Jones and Emily Nelson Jones. She was a teacher in Bedford County Public Schools for many years. Mrs. Carter was a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church where she served for several years as a deaconess before she became inactive and was placed on the Deaconess Emeritus Board and she was also a member of MW & MWA. A granddaughter, Melissa Carter; a great-grandson and many other relatives and friends survive her. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Community Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Haywood Robinson Jr. officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Burial Park. Edith Margaret Crawford, 84, of Lynchburg, formerly of Pearisburg, passed away Feb. 24, 1999 in Avante Nursing Home. Mrs. Crawford was born Nov. 13, 1914 in Maben, W.Va. and was a daughter of the late Jim and Sadie Dula and was also preceded in death by her husband, Kennis A. Crawford. Mrs. Crawford was a retired employee of Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, a member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star in Pearisburg. Mrs. Crawford is survived by one son, Kennis R. Crawford and wife, Joy of Keysville; one daughter, Kendra Crawford of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Scott Crawford, Deirdre Ferrell, J. Paul Hurt, Sceauncia Hurt; five great-grandchildren, one sister, Dorothy Cox and husband, Evleston of Vinton and one brother, John Dual and wife, Frances of Seaford. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 27, 1999 at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Grey Smith officiating with entombment following at the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. James R. (Bookie) Everett
James R. Everett, also known to this family and friends as “Bookie”, departed this life Wed. Feb. 24, 1999 at his residence in Lynchburg. Born in Bedford County, April 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Loxley and Ethel Everett. He served on the Deacon Board of St. Paul Baptist Church and was a very active church member. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a retired Federal Police Officer for the Federal Government. James was a loving husband to the late Clearice Dickerson Everett as well as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leroy O. and Ann. W. Everett of Silver Spring, Md.; three daughters, Oleatha C. Bethea Eva Everett and Michelle Hogan; eight grandchildren, Camesha and Dianne Everett, Michael, Christopher and Crystal Bethea, Sharone Everett and Robert and Legen Hogan; two great-grandchildren, JeJuan Everett and Alijah Everett; three sisters and their husbands, Ethel and John Marsh, Edna and Walter Spann and Arthelia and James Woods and two aunts, Hattie Austin and Alice Everett. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 at St. Paul Baptist Church. The Rev. Harland Brown will be officiating and interment will be at the church cemetery. Hazel Wilson Marsico, 82, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999 in the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1916 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Cornelius Wilson and Anie Mae Newman Wilson. She was a retired employee of Green’s Drug Store, a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, the Ann Douglas Circle, the Friendship Bible Class and the Tuesday Club. Her husband was the late Robert E. (Tony) Marsico. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Laura M. and Gregory Burnette, Lynch Station; a brother, Victor Wilson, Bedford; three sisters, Nena Leftwich, Edna Musgrove, Ruth Cundiff all of Bedford. Eleanor Baker Moorefield, 68, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Neville Moorefield. Mrs. Moorefield was born Aug. 22, 1930 in Campbell County, a daughter of the late Clarence Baker and the late Ethel Baker. She was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church and a Medication Aide at Central Virginia Training Center. She is survived by two sisters, Violet B. Dodson and her husband, Alex of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Pearl B. Arthur of Newport News; a brother, Kelso S. Baker and his wife, Vera of Sewickley, Pa.; an aunt, Margaret Sandidge of Washington, D.C.; three sisters-in-law, Virginia M. Willowby of North Augusta, S.C., Evelyn Moorefield of Rustburg and Sally T. Moorefield of Altavista, many nieces and nephews and several cousins. A funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Gladys Hamlett Raby
Mrs. Gladys Hamlett Raby, 81, of 1818 Langhorne Sq., died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 in Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born in Pittslyvania County December 4, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Taylor Hamlett and Lizzie Moon Hamlett and was the widow of Ernest Keith Raby. Mrs. Raby was a retired medical assistant with Dr. Echols medical practice, a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church and the Sunshine Sunday School Class. She is survived by her son, Don Raby and his wife, Kathy of Bedford; a brother, Gilmore Hamlett and his wife, Christine of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Donald Thomas Raby of Lynchburg, Lisa R. Edmunds and her husband, Paul of Forest and a devoted friend, Dorothy King of Lynchburg. A memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 in Diuguid Rivermont Chapel by the Rev. George Edward Saunders Jr.
George Edward Saunders Jr., 62, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Mrs. Helen Craddock Saunders. George was born in Piney River, Feb. 5, 1937. He was the son of the late George E. Saunders Sr. and Lucy Thacker Saunders. George was a member of the Lynchburg Hill Cats Booster Club and the Lynchburg Home Builders Association. George worked as a contractor salesman with Lowe’s and was a member of Forest United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mary Spencer and husband, Eric Otto Sandland of Richmond; two sons, John Vernon Saunders of Los Angeles, Calif., Christopher Bryan and wife, Suzanne Thompson Saunders of Charlottesville; one brother, Melvin Thaxton Saunders of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Linda Saunders Dodd of Nellysford; two grandchildren, Joshua Spencer Sandland and Madison Caroline Sandland both of Richmond. BROOKNEAL — Jacob Clabern (Jack) St. John, 65, of 2850 Mt. Carmel Road, died Wednesday night, Feb. 24, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Frances Hammock St. John. He was born in Charlotte County, Jan. 11, 1934, son of the late Tom St. John and Essie Trent St. John. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, an Army veteran and a retired employee of Nash Timber Co. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Wayne Ellington of Gladys, Ruby and Kirk Davis of Gladys; four grandchildren, Brian Woosley, Dustin Davis, Clay Ellington, Christopher Davis all of Gladys; three sisters, Ramona Bomar of Nathalie, Joyce Seamster of Naruna, Sally Pannell of Phenix. Michael (Scott) Turner went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999 after a long illness. Scott was the son of James R. (Jimmie) and Naomi Turner of Monroe. In addition to his parents, Scott is survived by his girlfriend, Stacy Carter; his sisters, April Fix and her husband, Stuart and Dawn Massie and her husband, Tommy; his brothers, Doug Turner and his wife, Sally and Mark Turner and his wife, Pam all of Monroe and Jay Turner and his wife, Cindy of Amherst. He had 11 nieces and nephews, William Fix, Casey Turner, Megan Tyree, Travis Tyree, Jessica Turner, Aaron Turner, Ellis Turner, Sarah Turner, Jordan Turner, Luke Turner and Jarrett Massie. Randolph Lee Almond, 56, of Sandston, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999. Mr. Almond is survived by his wife, Margaret B. Gloria M. Butterfield
Gloria M. Butterfield, 75, formerly of Winchester, Mass. and Camden, Maine, died Feb. 16, 1999 after a long illness. She had been residing most recently with her son Thomas Butterfield in Lynchburg. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., June 4, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Charles Edgerton Mayette Sr. and Lillian (Slaby) Mayette of St. Paul, Minn. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1944 where she studied Political Science, later she earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston State College and received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Secondary Reading from Boston University. She taught in the Boston area and at Northern Virginia Community College. She was active in the Mount Holyoke Alumni Clubs of Winchester and in Maine, taking on the position of club president. She volunteered in several literacy programs, had a keen interest in politics, was an excellent cook and regularly played bridge. She enjoyed the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle and was an avid reader. She married Lloyd G. Butterfield on July 13, 1946, a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, whose career took them to upstate N. Y., Calif., N.J., Va., Japan, Ill. and Mass. She leaves her brother, Charles Mayette of Peoria, Ariz.; four children, Stephen C. Butterfield of Harvard, Mass., Thomas T. Butterfield of Lynchburg, John L. Butterfield of Herndon and Julia B. Cavacco of Deerfield, Mass. and seven grandchildren. She also leaves an uncle, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Whitten Funeral Home, Lynchburg, handled the arrangements. Yuell Conway Coleman Sr.
Mr. Yuell Conway Coleman Sr., 74, of Goldsboro, Md., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999 at V.A. Hospital of Baltimore. Born Jan. 21, 1925 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Alma Frances Roach Coleman. He was the husband of Margaret Ellen (Dixon) Coleman who preceded him in death on Aug. 15, 1994. He moved to the area in 1953 from Lynchburg and was a self-employed mason retiring in 1983. He served in the Navy at Normandy during WWII and two tours during the Vietnam Era, also served with the C.B.’s attached with the U.S. Navy, life member of both the Caroline Memorial V.F.W. Post #7937 and D.A.V. #3. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Yuell C. Coleman Jr. of Ohio; three daughters, Linda Coleman of Baltimore, Md., Ellen Jane Goff and Kathie Joe Coleman both of Goldsboro, Md.; one brother, Herbert Coleman of Salem, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Lucile (Ludy) Carpenter Jacobs
Lucile (Ludy) Carpenter Jacobs was born Aug. 10, 1902 in Glen Summit Springs, Pa. to B.H. and Georgiana Carpenter. She was a graduate of The Baldwin School and a voice student for several years in New York City. Ludy married M.K. (Jake) Jacobs on June 18, 1926. During the first years of their marriage, Ludy lived in Red Ash, Va. as a mining engineer’s wife. After her husband joined the DuPont Company in 1932, she led an active life in Old Hickory, TE, Clinton, Iowa and Martinsville, Va. During the 2nd World War, she was active with the Red Cross whether it be organizing, teaching or actively participating in relief work. In each place, she was particularly active with the church. Ludy consistently shared her vocal talent through directing youth choirs and singing in adult choirs. This talent and her love of music have continued through several generations of her family. Ludy and Jake’s joyous union ended with Jake’s death in 1960. By 1980, Ludy established her home in Westminster Canterbury. There, she became a driving force in the Chapel Guild. Her efforts, along with others, produced the beautiful Louis R. Weisser Chapel. She also expended great efforts at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. One notable result was the rejuvenation of the Order of St. Luke. Ludy is survived by three children, Georgiana Zentmeyer of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Harold Jacobs of Wilmington, Del. and Charles Jacobs of Weston, Conn. She had six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. In all of her civic and personal endeavors, Ludy’s caring for others was always visible. She enthusiastically supported foreign mission work. Ludy would wish to support the team of medical missionaries in their effort to assist the desperately underprivileged of Uganda. Her daughter, Georgie, is a member of this team. William Lawrence Kirby Sr.
William Lawrence Kirby Sr., (Bill), went peaceful from his home in Salem to his heavenly home on Monday, Feb. 22, 1999. He was born Dec. 20, 1925 in Lynchburg to the late Howard Lee and Elsie Harris Kirby. Preceding him in death was a sister, Juanita Duff. He served his country from Nov. 3, 1943 until May 4, 1946 during World War II in the United States Navy aboard the “Flagship, First Fleet” USS St. Paul, member of the 3rd Fleet entering Sagami Wan Aug. 26, 1945 to receive surrender of Japan on Sept. 2, 1945. Bill retired from the Virginia State Police Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation as Senior Special Agent after 34 years of service. He was still employed part time by the department conducting background investigations when he was diagnosed in Aug. 1998 with lung cancer which had mabestasized to his brain. He was a long time member of the Virginia State Police Association. He was an active member of the Salem Baptist Church, which he loved dearly. He served as deacon and numerous other positions which includes chairman of Property Committee, Officer of the Senior Adult Group (B.A.L.L.), Stewardship-Finance Committee, Counting Committee, etc. Bill was a charter member of the Keysville Ruritan Club and for many years carried Meals on Wheels for the Legion for Older Americans in Salem. He was a regular donor of blood. Surviving family include his loving wife of 53 years, the former Ruby Rodgers; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Dean Jones, Roanoke, Dianne and Virgil C. Brown, New Castle; son and daughter-in-law, William L. Jr. (Chip) and Ginger Kirby, Salem; grandchildren, Christopher Dean Jones and wife, Kim, Roanoke, Andrea Denise Jones, Columbus, Ohio, Bryan North Jones, Longwood College, Leah Dianne and Kirby Cole (Casey) Brown, New Castle, Jonathan and Melissa Kirby, Salem, Scott Bolen, Vinton; foster grandchildren, Khoung Dinh of Longwood College and Vu Tran and Laura Traong both of Roanoke; sisters, Evelyn K. Garland G. Padgett, 75, of Fredericksburg, died from complications of Parkinson’s disease Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 at his residence. Mr. Padgett was born July 2, 1923 in Bedford County. He was the son of the late Oscar C. Padgett and Lou Ellen L. Padgett. He is survived by his wife, Elma D. Padgett; his daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Frank Williams; two grandchildren, Lee and Melanie Williams; a brother, William G. Padgett of Bedford. Mr. Padgett retired in 1991 from Leggett’s in Fredericksburg after 36 years with the company. He was a veteran of World War II. Alice Beard Campbell, 81, a resident of the Johnson Senior Center, Amherst, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late James Homer Campbell Sr. Born June 4, 1917 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Leslie Lee Beard Sr. and the late Winnie Duff Beard. Mrs. Campbell was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Horeb Methodist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence A. Beard and Leslie Lee Beard Jr. and one sister, Frances B. Hamilton. Mrs. Campbell is survived by two sons, James H. Campbell Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Lynchburg, Norman W. Campbell and his wife, Shirley of Spout Spring; three daughters, Barbara C. Rhudy and her husband, Bill of Emory, Margaret C. Burnette and her husband, Preston and Debbie C. Thompson and her husband, Jerry all of Amherst; three brothers, Raymond E. Beard, Clyde W. Dewey Hess, 58, of 4238 New London Road, Forest, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Ann Coleman Hess. Dewey was born April 24, 1940 in Russell County, the son of the late Gilmer Garland Hess and Aston Adams Hess. He was an employee of Intermet at Archer Creek and was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Randy Lynn Hess and Daniel Channon Hess. Pauline Phelps Rice
Pauline Phelps Rice, 93, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 at Camelot Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Fred Rice. Mrs. Phelps was born in Appomattox County, Aug. 13, 1905, a daughter of the late Howard W. Phelps and Edmonia Moore Phelps. Her mother passed away at an early age, she lovingly cared for her brothers and sisters. She later married and lived in Ohio until her husbands death. Then she moved to Concord to be near her family. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the adult bible class. For the past eight years she has been in the care of Frances Jamerson. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Hanley, Lenwood, Enid, Ryland and Everette Phelps and one sister, Odetta Evans. She is survived by one sister, Edmonia P. Boyer of Cleveland, Ohio and one brother, Reginald and his wife, Augusta of Lynchburg; four sisters-in-law, Ruby, Blanche and Audrey Phelps of Appomattox and Dorothy P. Booth of Concord, many caring and loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Frank Casper. Beverly Henninger Laine, 70, of Keysville, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 at home with her family. She is survived by her mother Fern LaRue Allen of Meadville, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Frank G. Laine, Jr. Mrs. Laine was an educator in the public schools of Ohio and Virginia. She was an active member of Keysville United Methodist Church, the UMW, and other various ministries of the United Methodist Church. Mrs. Laine was also active at the local, district, and state levels of the Garden Club and Woman’s Club. In addition to her mother, she is survived by four sons and two daughters; Frank G. Laine, III of Lynchburg, Robert E. Laine of Keysville, LTC. H. David Laine of Heidelberg, Germany, Kevin B. Laine of Martinsville, Evelyn Laine of Keysville, and Melodie L. Hipskind of Charlotte, N.C. and also ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. James Andrew (Butch) Hill
James Andrew (Butch) Hill, 56, of Route 1, Buchananan died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at his home after a long illness. He was born on Feb. 21, 1942 at Natural Bridge Station, the son of Ruth F. and Grover C. Hill of Natural Bridge Station. He graduated from Natural Bridge High School and served in the U.S. Army. His career included service as a State Trooper, Project Supervisor and Shift Coordinator at Natural Bridge Learning Center, and postmaster at Natural Bridge Station. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1996 after 18 years of service. His wife, Mary B. Hill with whom he celebrated 32 years of marriage, survives him. His immediate family includes his son, C. Scott Hill of the residence and his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bill West and their children of Blue Ridge. His extended family includes his uncles Mike Foster, Kewpie Foster, Fennie Foster, Johnny Foster and their families; his mother-in-law, June L. Bottoms; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Margaret B. and Ed Petty and Vicki F. and John Bottoms and their families; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves his loving and faithful canine companion, Amanda. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Harrison Funeral Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Joseph Paul Huntington, 67, of 213 Ashmont Ct. died Saturday evening at his home. He was the husband of Wilma Skinner Huntington for 41 years. Mr. Huntington was born in East Randolph, N.Y., Jan. 19, 1932, a son of the late Frank William Huntington and the late Mary Newton Huntington. He was a WWII veteran serving during the Korean War and was a retired engineer with General Electric for 38 years. Mr. Huntington was also a volunteer at Central Virginia Training Center, active with Meals on Wheels, the Wood Ministry, and was a long time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Kathryn Morris of Lynchburg; a son, James Walker Huntington and his wife Jeanette of N.J.; three brothers, Frank W. Huntington and his wife Polly of Arizona, Robert R. Huntington and his wife Helen of Lynchburg and Charles B. Huntington and his wife Joanne of western N.Y; two grandchildren, Angela Giorgi and Kayla Morris, and numerous nieces and nephews. William John Logwood, Jr., 70, of 2421 Berkley Avenue, S.W. Roanoke passed away on Saturday morning, Feb. 20, 1999 in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A native of Lynchburg, Bill was preceded in death by his father, William J. Logwood, Sr. and by his mother, Ivada Tuck Logwood and by his only sibling, Mrs. Patricia Barett. For the past 48 years, he has been the devoted husband of Frances Burford Logwood. He was the proud and beloved father of Judy Logwood of Washington, D.C., of Keith Logwood, Mark and Marcia Logwood, all of Roanoke, and Tim and Debbie Logwood of Christiansburg; the doting grandfather of Anthony, Devon, Emily and Alex (paw paw). He attended the University of Virginia, graduated from Lynchburg College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, as well as, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Sarah Lord Solnitzky, 96, died Feb. 20, 1999 in Camelot Hall of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Dr. Othmar C. Solnitzky. She was born in Washington, D.C., Nov. 16, 1902 the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Clara V. Lord. She was a member of Chevy Chase Methodist Church, Chevy Chase, Md. where she was very actively involved in the women’s circle. Mrs. Solnitzky is survived by her son, Othmar Solnitzky, Jr., of Washington D.C., and daughter, Carolyn A. Lusk of Forest; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Dorothy S. Lamar, and Eleanor Jackson Normandy; also by three brothers, and two sisters. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Steppe is survived by her daughters, Betty Tucker of Lexington, N.C. and Carol Slemmer of Ocala, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Born Feb. 21, 1909, in Clearmont County, Ohio, he was a son of the late Joseph Bruce and Laura Mae Wilkerson Wiley. The family moved to Lynchburg in 1917. He attended Amherst Schools, retired from Meade Corporation with 38 years of service. Mr. Wiley was a member of Moose Lodge #715 and Bethesda Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children; Hazel (Tootsie) Wiley Ashworth, J. Garland Wiley, both of Lynchburg and Robert Wayne Wiley of Forest; three sisters, Mae Rucker of Monroe, Martha Lindsey and Eloise Coleman, both of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Charles Hammersley, Sherry Shober, Heather Wiley, Ron Wiley and Rob Wiley; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer Hammersley, Logan Hammersley and Bruce Shober. A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. James Wood officiating. The family will receive friends today from 7-8 p.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel and other times at the residence of his daughter Hazel Ashworth. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church Men’s Bible Class.

Lalia E. Bartholomew
Lalia E. Bartholomew passed away at her home in Drakes Branch on Feb. 19, 1999. She was the widow of Paul W. Bartholomew and is survived by her three sons, Edward, Paul, and John; and her daughter, Susan Dooley, as well as thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Born on Feb. 11, 1913, “Mrs. B.”, as she was known to many friends and neighbors, was the daughter of the late William Green Puckett and Nannie Smith Puckett of Brookneal and was the last surviving of their ten children. She dedicated her long life to her extended family and the friends and neighbors who she “adopted” as family. She will be greatly missed. Funeral services are being held at 4 p.m. today at Lebanon United Methodist Church where she was a member. Mrs. Bartholomew will be buried in the Lebanon Church Cemetery next to Paul, her husband of 60 years.

Carrie Gilbert Carroll
Carrie Trent Gilbert Carroll, 98, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 in Oakwood Manor Nursing Home in Bedford. She was the wife of the late Joseph A. Carroll and her first husband was the late Thomas U. Gilbert. She was born Sept. 9, 1900 in Appomattox County, the daughter of the late Joseph Thompson Trent and Mary Jane Harper Trent. She was a member of Gospel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas E. Gilbert and James E. Gilbert and one daughter, Evelyn Gilbert. She is survived by three sons, Raymond Gilbert of Rustburg, Joseph E. “Dick” Gilbert of Long Island, N.Y. and Jesse M. Gilbert of Forest; two daughters, Margaret G. Denton of Madison Heights and Connie G. Story of Lynchburg; 24 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Melvin H. Campbell. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Frances Miller Hughes, 71, of Roseland, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 at Health South Medical Center in Richmond. Born in Nelson County, April 27, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Guy Leonard Miller and Lula Catherine Runkle Miller. She was a member of Massies Mill Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Henry L. Hughes; two sons, Kim M. Hughes of Largo, Md. and Kent M. Hughes of Mechanicsville; and two grandchildren, Jamie and Kristen. Dorothy McCraw Lacks, 83, of The Oaks, formally of 1920 Mimosa Drive, passed into eternity Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Norwood Lacks who preceded her in death May 30, 1998. Mrs. Lacks was born in Lynchburg, Aug. 10, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel S. McCraw and the late Lula P. McCraw. She was a lifetime member of Inglewood Baptist Church and a retired employee of Leggetts Department Store. She is survived by one sister, Jane Kent of Dover, Del. and many loving and caring nieces and nephews. William Henry Phlegar, 89, of 4704 Clarke Street, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Blanche Hicks Phlegar. He was born Feb. 3, 1910 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Joseph Edgar Phlegar and Emma Holt Phlegar. He retired as Chaptain of Detectives after 35 years of service with the Lynchburg Police Department. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Camden; one grandson, David Patrick Camden; one granddaughter, Allison Renee Camden; two great grandsons, David Patrick Camden, Jr. and Ryan Patrick Campbell and one great-granddaughter, Jackie Camden all of Lynchburg. GRETNA - Robert Grover Pickeral, 83, of 106 Motley Street, Gretna died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 at his residence. Born Sept. 19, 1915 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Richard Pickeral and Jenny Chism Pickeral. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters, Clyde Pickeral, James Pickeral, Russell Pickeral, Doherta Lovelace, Doris Lovelace and Ina Bane. Mr. Pickeral was owner operator of Pick’s Radio Cab. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post #232. He is survived by his wife Tiny Lewis Pickeral of the residence; a daughter and her husband, Sandra and Paul O’Keefe of Norfolk; a son and his wife Glenn and Tina Pickeral of Chatham; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Mckenzie, Vincent and Barron. Waller Howard Stewart
Waller Howard Stewart (Bull), 61, of Monroe, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Born in Nelson County, Jan. 25, 1938, he was a son of the late William Howard Stewart, Jr. and Hattie Mae Tyree Stewart. Waller was a member of Massie Memorial Baptist Church, a veteran of the United States Army, and retired due to illness from Central Virginia Electric Cooperative after 32 years of service. He loved fishing and was a first-class “shade tree” mechanic. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hazel Cash Stewart; two sons, Jeff Stewart and wife Amanda, and Duane Stewart and wife Kathy, all of Madison Heights; a daughter, Pam Zirkle and husband Tim of Amherst; two brothers, Leonard Stewart of Lovingston and Gary Stewart of Arrington; three sisters; Joyce Dunn of Charlottesville, Betty Grubb of Crozet, and Harriet Sanderson of Fredericksburg; five grandchildren, Daniel, Mary, Tyler, Kenneth and Christopher; a special foster daughter, Flora Hale of Monroe; several devoted brothers and sisters-in-law; two uncles, four aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends; and his faithful companion “Jake” the dog. He was preceded in death by a devoted aunt, Hazel Showalter. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at Woodland Baptist Church by the Rev. David M. Margaret Bostian Stone
Margaret Bostian Stone, 85, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Eugene Louis Stone. Born in Hamlet, N.C., July 4, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Annie Currie Bostian. Mrs. Stone was a retired beautician and had worked at Cleary’s Beauty Shop for many years. She later volunteered her time and services to both the Lynchburg Nursing Home and the Carrington for 19 years. She was also an active member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Nichols and her husband, Ermon of Greensboro, N.C. and Rebecca Martin and her husband, Duval of Lynchburg; two brothers, Fred Bostian of Md. and David Bostian of N.C.; two sisters, Gloria Greenwood of Colo. and Ruth Weil of N.C., four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Nolan R. Crowder and the Rev. Carlton Duck officiating. Edward “Jimmy” Arthur Thompson, 82, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. He was the husband of Elizabeth Daniel Thompson. Mr. Thompson was born in Rustburg, July 29, 1916 to the late Fred H. and Mary Thompson. Mr. Thompson served in the army during WWII. He was a retired salesman from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Inc. and was a member of the North Bedford Baptist Church.
