GLADSTONE — Forrest Noel Amerman, 55, of Gladstone, died Oct. 29, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was a self-employed trucker. He was the husband of the late Patricia Amerman.
Born in Patterson, N.J., Oct. 14, 1943, he was the son of the late Franklin F. and Edith Quin Amerman.
He is survived by four sons, Donald Amerman of Jackson, N.J., Paul Amerman of Brick, N.J., Timothy Amerman of Gladstone and James Brent Amerman of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Melanie and Kevin Amerman of Jackson, N.J.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998 in Driskill Funeral Chapel with interment in Amherst Cemetery.

Edward Farrar Brown
AMHERST — Edward Farrar Brown, 87, of Amherst, died Oct. 26, 1998 in a Lynchburg hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sophia Campbell Brown.
He was born in Amherst, Sept. 25, 1911, son of the late Howell L. and Pearl White Brown. Mr. Brown was a retired Sheet Metal Tradesman serving as a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #100 of Washington, D.C.
He was also a member of Amherst Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary D. Moore of Manassas, Mrs. Mildred B. Drozda of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Margaret R. Lunney of Whispering Pines, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Warner Unger of Amherst and Mrs. James A. Jordan of Richmond.
Services for Mr. Brown will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Amherst Rescue Squad or to the Amherst Baptist Church.

Floyd Thomas Crabtree Sr.
Floyd Thomas Crabtree Sr., 69, of Lynchburg, died Thursday evening, Oct. 29, 1998 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home.
He was born in Campbell County, Dec. 25, 1928, son of the late James Moses Crabtree and Della DeMaris Crabtree.
He was a member of Edge Baptist Church, a retired employee of Allen-Morrison Company and an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one son, F. Thomas Crabtree Jr. of Rustburg; one daughter, Deborah Crabtree of Lynchburg; one brother, Herman Crabtree of Altavista; three sisters, Frances Lyons of Blackstone, Mildred Dunnavant of Meherian, Geneva Francis of Baltimore, Md. and a number of nieces and nephews and former wife, Annie Mae Hunter Crabtree of Lynchburg.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998 at Wickliffe Cemetery in Brookneal by the Rev. Andrew Grose.

Mrs. Inez Watkins Davis
Mrs. Inez Watkins Davis of 2209 Yorktown Avenue, Windsor Terrace Apartments Building C, Apt. 9, Lynchburg, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Charley Davis.
Born in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Watkins and the late Mrs. Eva Richey Watkins.
She was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Charley Davis Jr. of Concord; two daughters, Ms. Shirley Reid of Lynchburg and Ms. Virginia Wade of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother, Thomas Page Watkins of Big Island; five sisters, Mrs. Ellen Johnson and Ms. Elizabeth Morton both of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Fannie Lou Parr of Upper Marboro, Md., Ms. Rachel Hurt of Capitol Heights, Md. and Mrs. Kathleen Davis of Bedford, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eva L. Greene.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday from Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. James Cobbs officiating. Interment in the Baptist Cemetery. She will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. The cortege will assemble at the residence at 1:15 p.m.

Melvin Garrett Fizer, 68, of Bedford, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
Born July 22, 1930 in Bedford County, he was the son of the late Charles Henry Fizer Jr. and Pauline Burton Fizer.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles William Fizer.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Barton Fizer; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Fizer of Ga., Charlene Dinwiddie of Bedford; three sons, Melvin Garrett Fizer Jr. and Jimmy Lee Fizer both of Ga. and Kevin Eugene Fizer of Bedford; two stepsons, Michael T. Barton of Omaha, Neb. and Carl E. Barton of Bedford; a stepdaughter, Rebecca A. Carter of Bedford; four sisters, Margaret Mabry of Upper Marlboro, Md., Marion Clary and June Tyler both of Valentine and Sheila Sweet of Thaxton, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth F. Humphreys
Elizabeth F. Humphreys (Pete), 66, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 at her home in Montebello.
Born in Nelson County, Dec. 12, 1931, she was a daughter of Deanie Maddox Humphreys and the late Frank S. Humphreys.
Ms. Humphreys was a member of the Montebello Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad, where she had served as Treasurer, was a volunteer 4-H leader, assisted with both the Montebello and Fleetwood Benefit Trail Rides and was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church. She was a bus driver for the Nelson County School System for over 30 years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sisters, Eunice Kunick of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, Georgia Byers of Vesuvius, Shirlyn Satterwhite of Arrington and three brothers, Jesse and Lowell Humphreys both of Vesuvius and Robert Humphreys of Buena Vista.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Norman, Frank and Marion Humphreys.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998 at Mt. Paran Cemetery by the Rev. Rodney Zirkle.

Virginia Kelly McCormick, 57, of Rt. 2, Altavista, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 in the University of Virginia Hospital.
She was the devoted wife of Emmett C. McCormick for 40 years.
Born Feb. 20, 1941 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Maude Hammock Kelly of Altavista and the late James Kelly.
She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy of Altavista. Mrs. McCormick was known for her compassion and her outstanding cooking ability.
Her specialty was in preparing cakes, pies and numerous desserts for church members and the shut ins of the community.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by one son, Dwayne Edward McCormick and his wife, Teresa of Hurt; one brother, J.W. Kelly of Hurt and one granddaughter, Susan Roberts of Hurt.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 31, 1998 in the Church of God of Prophecy of Altavista by the Rev. Cecil Frazier and the Rev. Jeff Miller. Burial will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

James Malcolm Smith Sr., 53, of 9235 River Road, Halifax, died Oct. 29, 1998 at his residence.
Born May 1, 1945 in Charlotte County, he was the son of the late George Smith and Gracie Shipp Smith.
He was the husband of Rebecca Compton Smith.
He was a truck driver for Brookneal Milling and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Deborah S. Guthrie of Nathalie, Gracie S. Rice, of Gladys; two sons, James Malcolm Smith Jr. of Lynchburg, Danny L. Smith of Halifax; two stepdaughters, Christy Yeatts and Susan L. Yeatts both of Halifax; four brothers, Chancie Smith of Brookneal, Warren Smith of Nathalie, Jimmy Smith and Welford Smith both of Brookneal; one sister, Linda S. Roark of Altavista, four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998 at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Scearce officiating. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens, South Boston.

Christine Hunter Creasey
Christine Hunter Creasey of 714 Peaks Street, departed this life Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 in Oakwood Manor.
She was born in Bedford County, the daughter of the late John Sr. and Sallie Wilkerson Hunter. She was the wife of the late Frank Creasey. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, John, Albert, Roy, Fitugh, Florie and Frances. Christine was a graduate of Virginia Seminary, Lynchburg. She was a school teacher in Thaxton. Christine became a member of NAACP, Eastern Star Chapter 226 Bedford and the Willing Workers’ Club. Christine served as secretary for 51 years at Shiloh Baptist Church where she was a life long member.
She is survived by a sister, Vergie Geter of Bedford; two nephews and their wives, Pelton and Ann Geter of Palm Coast, Fla. and Furnell and Odessa Geter of N.Y.; other nieces and nephews, William Lowry, Alvin Lowry, Barbara Ann Lowry and Rossilyn (Tina) and a host of Creasey’s family nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. P.E. Brown, Pastor, officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. Mrs. Creasey’s remains may be viewed in the church from 1 p.m. until funeral time.

Deacon Donald M. Davis of Phenix, died Sunday in Lynchburg.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Hurt Davis of the home; two brothers, Mr. Frank Davis of Phenix and Mrs. Bobby Davis of N.Y.; three sisters, Mrs. Mackie Spinner of Md., Mrs. Delores Jones of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Jeanette Graves of Hurt.

M. Maxine Davis
M. Maxine Davis, 70, past president, International Association of Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant, Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #41 died Oct. 27, 1998 of cancer at home in Haymarket.
Born in Appalachia, Oct. 31, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Max Harold Davis and the late Maude E. Grubb Shaw. During her tenure as international president, she targeted the Odd Fellows World Eye Bank and Visual Research Foundation, World Hunger and Disaster Fund, Rose Parade and Float Fund, Arthritis Foundation and Cancer Fund as special projects for Patriarchs Militant Units around the globe.
Miss Davis lead pilgrimages to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, to the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa Ontario, Canada and made official visits to units across North America.
She was the first female international leader from Virginia since the mid-1960s. She attended school in Appalachia and is a graduate of the Berea Academy, Berea, Ky. and Nazareth College, Louisville, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her father, Max Harold Davis; her mother, Maude E. Shaw and her brother, Randolph Leon Hobbs Jr.
Miss Davis is survived by her aunt, Dolly Opal Watson of Appalachia; her cousin, Sam Snow of Lynchburg, Emily A. Moss of Haymarket and several other cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Stephen C. Hunley officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Randolph Taylor Johnson Sr., 79, formerly of Amherst County, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Iris Marion McDonald Johnson.
Born April 7, 1919 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late William Samuel Johnson and Florence Hall Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Sandy Bottom Christian Church and a retired meat cutter with Colonial Stores & Big Star.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Mildred Martin and two brothers, Charlie Johnson and Russell Johnson.
He is survived by one son, Randy T. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Mary Kaye of Forest; two daughters, Sandra J. Jones of Martinsville and Nancy J. Burks and her husband, Gene of Poke County, Fla., 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Maurice Edward Newcomb
Maurice Edward Newcomb, 81, of 5917 Hines Circle, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of Margaretha Hollmann Newcomb.
He was born Sept. 25, 1917 in Bedford County, the son of the late Willie Edward Newcomb and Annie Ruth Hodges Newcomb. He was a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during World War II and Korea and retired from Burns Security. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 and Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Duval Newcomb and Richard Newcomb.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Linda N. Ross and her husband, Vaden of Christiansburg and Imrgard Braun and her husband, Hermann of Germany; three granddaughters, Diane Ross, Jennifer Ross of Christiansburg and Sabine Blackman and her husband, Brian of Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Janeena Blackman and Shannon Blackman of Ind.; one sister, Helen Barrett and family of Brookneal; one sister-in-law, Lilly Newcomb and Michael of Fla. and very special friends Bradley and Judy Weinsheimer and Drake of Md.

Miss Georgieaner Ware of 1006 Tyree Street, Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998 at her residence.
She was born in Nelson County. She was a consistent and faithful member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church where she served as a member of the missionary circle. She was retired from Guggenheimer Nursing Home.
She is survived by her special friend Mrs. Diana Rauh and her husband of Huddleston; her church family at Diamond Hill Baptist Church and a host of other friends.

Corrine Reid Wooldridge, 84, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was born July 11, 1914 in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late John Cecil Reid and Minni Barricks Reid. She was the wife of Robert Wooldridge and is survived by three sons, Larry Wooldridge of Elephant Butte, N.M., Don Wooldridge of Alamogordo, N.M. and Kenneth Wooldridge of Conyers, Ga.

Dorothy Marion Brooks
Dorothy M. Brooks of 100 Pennsylvania Avenue, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 at the Carrington after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late George U. Brooks and Lily Mason Brooks.
A graduate of Lynchburg High School and Randolph-Macon Women’s College, Dorothy excelled in sports and became a member of the Blazer Club for outstanding athletes. She was also a member of the Glee Club and the Dance Club of R-MWC. She taught school in Gladys and Brookneal where she was senior class sponsor, coach of the girl’s basketball team, director of the Glee Club and director of the senior class play.
Dorothy was a dedicated Christian and member of Heritage United Methodist Church. Her love for others, especially her church and family, was her motivation for the kindness and compassion for which she will always be remembered.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Edith B. Lee of 100 Pennsylvania Avenue and many loving cousins.

AMHERST — William Campbell, 89, died Oct. 27, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 26, 1909 in Amherst County, son of the late Kirk and Lucy Campbell. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Sally P. Campbell and was predeceased by one son, Tillman B. Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a retired Pipe Fitter for American Cyanamid and a farmer. He was a member of Piney River Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Kermit Campbell of Appomattos; one daughter, Mrs. Frances C. Beard of Arlington, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Amy Corinne Smith Casalenuovo, 76, of 427 Westover Blvd., died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Frank Casalenuovo.
Mrs. Casalenuovo was born in Evington, June 16, 1922 to the late Theron Nokel Smith and the late Ora May Preas Newman. She was a member of Parkview United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star Lodge and a retired hair stylist.
She is survived by her children, Cora Dodd Rawlings of Rustburg, Michael S. Grace Smith Grubbs, 91, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Camelot Hall Nursing Home.
She was born July 20, 1907, in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late John Thomas Smith and Grace Louise Field Smith. She was a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Frank L. Grubbs, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn; and two grandsons, Thomas Grubbs and Robert Grubbs of Raleigh, N.C.

Elizabeth J. “Lizzie” Johnson
Elizabeth J. “Lizzie” Johnson, 96, of 4670 Fort Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late James Thornton Johnson.
Born June 30, 1902 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Wortley W. and Bertha Seamster Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six children, three grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one brother and two sisters.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by one son, Willard Johnson of Lynchburg; four daughters, Thelma Wright of Montvale, Ruby Campbell of Rustburg, Christine Hurtak of Fla. and Janie Anderson of Lynchburg, 21 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Anna Naumann Sentell
Anna Naumann Sentell, 70, of 1115 Brandon Road, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Calvin Ray Sentell.
Born March 13, 1928 in Gloucester, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Viola Giberson Naumann. Mrs. Sentell was a retired registered nurse with the Central Virginia Training Center, a member of the Quilting Guild of Lynchburg, and a member of the Living Word Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Sentell was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah S. McDaniel.
She is survived by three daughters, Sandra A. Dutkiewicz and her husband, John, of Woodlawn. Nancy J. Sweeten and her fiancee, Joseph Simone of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Regina M. Young of Murphysburg, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margaret Nicholas Thompson
Margaret Nicholas Thompson, 81, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998 after a long illness. She was the wife of the late W.W. (Tommy) Thompson.
Born Nov. 23, 1916 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late George Samuel Nicholas and Ella Mills Nicholas. Mrs. Thompson was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her deepest love was for her family. She was a graduate of Amherst High School and Virginia Commercial College and was retired from Leggett Department Stores where she was the credit manager of the downtown store. She was an active longtime member of First Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, James C. and Betty Jo Thompson of Lynchburg and Craig W. and Elizabeth Thompson of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter and her husband, Miriam T. and Terry E. Ford of Aurora, Colo.; a brother and his wife, John Samuel and Marguerite Nicholas of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Sean M. Thompson of Kansas City, Kans. Shelley, Susan and Michael Ford of Aurora, Colo., Dianah Waite of Pueblo, Colo. and Dawn Greinman of San Jose, Calif. and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Nicholas and three sisters, Miriam Wilburn, Sara Hand and Opal Reynolds.

Phill Carlton Wood Jr.
Phill Carlton Wood Jr., 75, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born June 24, 1923 in Covington, son of the late Phill C. Wood Sr. and Anna Lee Harmon Wood. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert A. Wood.
Mr. Wood was a retired building contractor with A.L. Yancey Company. He served with the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 299th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and the Purple Heart. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Garden, a former member of Charlottesville Kiwanis Club, Cove Garden Ruritan Club and North Garden Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are two daughters, Cecile E. Ferguson and her husband, Jake of McCall, Idaho, Patricia W. Wilkerson and her husband, Jim of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Leslie, Jason and Tim Ferguson, Matthew and Megan Wilkerson; a sister-in-law, Judy Wood of Charlottesville; one niece, Kevin Wood; four nephews, Craig Wood, Barry Wood, Jaime Wood and Scott Wood.

Ashby Wise Wright Jr., 63, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Gladys P. Wright.
Born in Bedford County, Aug. 19, 1935, he was the son of the late Ashby W. and Thelma Wood Wright. He was a retired self-employed truck driver and was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wright is survived by one daughter, Deborah W. Harris and Philip of Madison Heights; three sons, Wayne Lee Wright and Deborah of Atlanta, Ga., Curtis Lynn Wright and Betty, David Earl Wright and Dana both of Madison Heights, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Geneva Owen Brodie
Funeral services for Mrs. Geneva Owen Brodie, 88, of Gray, Ga., formerly of Lynchburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 1998 at Fort Hill Methodist Church with the Rev. John Seigle officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Brodie died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at the Gray Nursing Home, Gray, Ga.

Mrs. Brodie was born Feb. 16, 1910, the youngest of 20 children. She graduated from Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in Roanoke in 1930 as a registered nurse. She was a member of the Virginia and American Nurses Association. She was a Circle Leader and a member of Fort Hill Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Dewey Clifford Brodie. They were married in 1933 and lived in Lynchburg from 1935 to 1994. They then moved to Thomaston, Ga. Mrs. Brodie’s father, Joseph Anderson Owen, was a Confederate veteran. He enlisted in Co. E 36th Regt., Virginia Infantry on Dec. 31, 1863. He was captured at the Battle of Waynesboro on March 2, 1865 and was released from Ft. Delaware, Del. on June 20, 1965.
Survivors include two sons, J. Steven Brodie and wife, Mrs. Clarice P. Brodie of Thomaston, Ga., Dr. Owen W. Brodie and wife, Mrs. Patricia H. Brodie of Richmond; four grandchildren, Mrs. Christin King of Wiesbaden, German, Mrs. Catherine Escaro of Chicago, Ill., Mr. Andrew O. Brodie of Richmond and Mrs. Mary E. Venn of Columbia, S.C. and three great-grandchildren, Adam B. King, Anthony R. King and James A. Brodie.
Visitation with the family will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Hill United Methodist Church.

Dorothy Marion Brooks
Dorothy M. Brooks of 100 Pennsylvania Avenue, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 at the Carrington after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late George U. Brooks and Lily Mason Brooks.
A graduate of Lynchburg High School and Randolph-Macon Women’s College, Dorothy excelled in sports and became a member of the Blazer Club for outstanding athletes. She was also a member of the Glee Club and the Dance Club of R-MWC. She taught school in Gladys and Brookneal where she was senior class sponsor, coach of the girl’s basketball team, director of the Glee Club and director of the senior class play.
Dorothy was a dedicated Christian and member of Heritage United Methodist Church. Her love for others, especially her church and family, was her motivation for the kindness and compassion for which she will always be remembered.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Edith B. Lee of 100 Pennsylvania Avenue and many loving cousins.

AMHERST — Edward Farrar Brown, 87, of Amherst, died Oct. 26, 1998 in a Lynchburg hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sophia Campbell Brown.
He was born in Amherst, Sept. 25, 1911, son of the late Howell L. and Pearl White Brown. Mr. Brown was a retired Sheet Metal Tradesman serving as a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #100 of Washington, D.C. He was also a member of Amherst Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary D. Moore of Manassas, Mrs. Mildred B. Drozda of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Margaret R. Lumney of Whispering Pines, N.C.

Carroll D. Crews, 81, of 1421 Campbell Avenue, died Tuesday afternoon at his residence. He was the husband of the late Ruby (Shine) Wooldridge Crews.
Mr. Crews was born in Appomattox County, Jan. 7, 1917, a son of the late Charlie David and Rosa Alma Eagle Crews. He was a member of Fairview Christian Church, a retired employee of Courtland Mfg. Co. and a veteran of World War II.

Holcomb Leroy Johnson, 65, of Rustburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of Virginia Irby Cope Johnson.
Born April 18, 1933 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Charlie D. Johnson and Clara Dudley Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

He was born in Kansas City, Miss., June 10, 1956, son of Carlos F. Ray of South Boston and Merle Crenshaw Smith of Halifax. He was a member of McCanless Methodist Church, son of the American Legion and an employee of Huber Corporation.

GRETNA — James Braxton “Brack” Saunders, 76, of 302 Colonial Ridge Apartments, Gretna, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Feb. 18, 1922 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late John H. Saunders and Betty Blanche Brown Saunders. He was married to the late Minnie Divers Saunders and was predeceased by three brothers, William Saunders, Raymond Saunders and Holsie Saunders. Mr. Saunders was an Army veteran of World War II in which he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a retired carpenter with Onyx Shields Construction Co.
He is survived by four brothers, Earl Saunders of Pittsville, Harry Leo Saunders of Pittsville, Otis L. Saunders of Chatham and Frank D. Saunders of Gretna; three sisters, Elizabeth S. Divers of Gretna, Ruth Saunders of Lynchburg and Jean Bolling of Gretna; an aunt, Ethel Booth of Lynchburg and a number of nieces and nephews.

Gretchen A. Scales
Gretchen A. Scales, 98, of Lynchburg, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 in the Drinkard Health Center of Westminster-Canterbury. She was the wife of the late Baxter Boyd Scales. She was born Aug. 16, 1900 in New York City, N.Y. and was raised in Manhattan and Garden City, L.I., N.Y. Her parents were the late Giovanni (John) B. Attanesio and Ida Treptow Attanasio of Lynchburg. Her sister, Mrs. Edna Adams, predeceased her in 1986.
She graduated from Pratt Institute of Art, Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1922, married in 1923 in Hempstead, N.Y. to WWI veteran BB Scales, a native Virginian and gave birth in March 1924 to their only child, John Baxter Scales. After some years as a housewife and mother, she became a free-lance artist and ultimately, the advertising manager of The Franklin Shops, a major retailer in Hempstead.
After WWII, she moved to Lynchburg in 1947 with her husband while her son, a WWII veteran, attended VPI. She joined Court Street United Methodist Church, was active on church committees and was responsible for revitalizing the church History Room. In addition, she was able to retrieve the long-absent oil portrait of Bishop John Early from an out of state source and subsequently painted a precise copy that is now on display in the History Room.
Living on Island Farm (YMCA Island, now Treasure Island), she loved the rural life as a farmer’s wife, enjoying the seasonal changes on the James River. This gave her time to paint. She studied art in Lynchburg with Bob Harmon, Hal MacIntosh and John Duncan, also, with Vincent Ceglia of Pa. who conducted his classes in Italy. She painted watercolors in Austria, Bermuda, Brittany, England, France, Ireland, Isle of Guernsey, Italy and various locations in Virginia and other states. An oil portrait of Mr. John Capron is in the permanent collection of Lynchburg College.
Furthering her love of art she participated in many art workshops and exhibited in juried shows, one-man and group art shows, winning prizes in many categories. She also held numerous organizational leadership positions.
To complement her art career, she became a free-lance artist and advertising manager for Guggenheimer’s and for Patterson’s Drug Co. with seven stores. Her extensive 70 plus years of art skills helped her tremendously in her professional and home life. Her hobbies included gardening and music, especially that written and performed by her grandson David. For a period of time, she operated The Dutch Treat, an eatery across from the Academy Theatre on Main Street.
She was active in the Lynchburg Little Theatre, the Lynchburg Art Club, Lynchburg Historical Society, The National League of American Pen Women, United Methodist Women and helped found the Fine Arts Center in the early 60s.
She is survived by her son, Cpt. (Ret.) John B. Scales, P.E. and daughter-in-law, Dorothy D. Scales; four grandchildren, Lt. Col. David M. Scales, US Army, Washington, D.C., Robert B. Scales, CPA, Lexington, Ky., Mrs. Nancy E. Tarascio, Marietta, Ga. and Mrs. Lisa A. Watkins, Easley, S.C. She is also survived by her first cousin, Mrs. Ortrud Gunz of Bregenz, Austria as well as nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 8-10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1998 at Diuguid Funeral Chapel, 1816 Rivermont Avenue.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 1998 at Court Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stanley Pigue` officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Donald VanBlarican
Donald VanBlarican, 64, of 880 Mollies Creek Road, Gladys, died Monday, October 26, 1998 in University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. He was the husband of Carole Thelen VanBlarican.
He was born April 20, 1934, in Illinois, the son of the late Elmer VanBlarican and Bessie Schaffer VanBlarican. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Donald VanBlarican.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Susie VanBlarican and one grandson, Nicholas Richard VanBlarican of Gladys and two sisters, Velma Hart of Narrows and Julina Thomas of Portsmouth.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church by Father Bert Thelen S.J. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Marvin Anderson Wood
Marvin Anderson Wood, 73, of 166 Fernridge Court, Madison Heights, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of Anna R. Wood.
Born in Nelson County, Aug. 20, 1925, he was a son of the late Herbert C. and Flossie Banton Wood. He was retired from Electric Service Co. of Arlington, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and was a member of College Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Carolyn Williams of St. Petersburg, Fla., Marlene Ray of Manasas, Michele Weber of Macatawa, Mich., Marvin A. Wood Jr. of Centreville, Brenda Harvey of Harrisonburg and John Harvey Jr. of Richwood, Ohio; four sisters, Frances Coates of Madison Heights, Virginia Glover and her husband, Percy of Lynchburg, Marion Wiles and her husband, Ben of Fairfax, Mary Mitchell and her husband, Les of Gladys; one brothers, Herbert Wood and his wife, Peggy of Madison Heights; two half brothers, Montague Wood and Billy Wood and one half sister, Jane Williams all of Arrington, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday from Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Jim Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in St. Stevens Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edward Meeks Bomar III (Mickey), 49, of Brookwood Drive, Lynchburg, went home to be with our Heavenly Father, Sunday morning, Oct. 25, 1998.
He was born in Lynchburg, Aug. 26, 1949, son of Edward Meeks Bomar Jr. and Pauline Ellington Bomar of Lynchburg. He attended Sharon United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation.
In addition to his loving parents, he leaves behind to mourn his passing, one son, Keith Bomar and his wife, Leah of Rustburg; two daughters, Kim Bomar of Gladys and Kelley Bomar of Lynchburg; his beloved grandchildren, Emmy Tucker, Michael Bomar, Eric Bomar; three sisters, Bobby Lanier and her husband, Rick of Madison Heights, Connie Fisher and her husband, Billy of Mechanicsville, Sandra Davis and her husband, Walter of Forest; a special friend, his former wife, Arlene Wray Cudney of Gladys; a devoted mother-in-law, Mattie D. Wray of Gladys; a devoted nephew, Wilton Thomas Wood Jr. and many other special family and friends.

Ronnie A. Harris
Ronnie A. Harris, 80, a 58 year of Warren, Mich., died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998 at St. John Macomb Hospital.
He was born May 10, 1918 in Long Island. He was the son of the late Brace T. Harris and Lucy Waller Harris. Mr. Harris was retired from Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 37 years. He served in the U.S. Army, 709 Tank Battalion in Germany and France during World War II. He was a member of St. Malachy Senior Citizens and Warren Woods Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Thrash Harris; daughters, Mary Virginia Harris and Deborah E. Frusciano of Mich.; sisters, Anne H. White of South Boston, Mary H. Guthrie of Nathalie, Maggie H. Conner of South Boston, Geraldine Mitchell of Richmond; brothers, William Harris and Rupert Harris of Long Island; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Reggie, B.T. and TomPat Harris and one sister, Earlie H. Dews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr, Warren, with the Rev. Robert Kasper, St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Cadillac Memorial Gardens East Clinton Township.
Jeffrey Martin Hester
Jeffrey Martin Hester, 56, of Bedford, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 20, 1942 in Brownsville, Tenn., he was the son of Jennie M. Hester of Memphis, Tenn. and the late James Alvin Hester. He was a member of Pecks Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Glenda Kackley Hester; a daughter, Sarah E. Harris of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, Jeffrey Martin Hester Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Alyson Frye of Bedford; a stepson, Todd Lee Roberts of Napa, Calif.; two brothers, James Austin Hester and Richard Alvin Hester both of Coldwater, Miss. and six grandchildren.

Lottie Mae Lucado Marks
Lottie Mae Lucado Marks, 86, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the widow of Leroy Earl Marks.
Mrs. Marks was born Dec. 27, 1911 in Appomattox County to the late Joe Lucado and Maude Olivia Morris Lucado. She was a charter member of Hyland Heights Baptist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Earl Marks Sr. and his wife, Kitty of Madison Heights, James E. Marks of Richmond and R. Keith Marks and his wife, Betty of Lynchburg; two daughters, Peggy M. Jones and her husband, Roger of Lynchburg and Wanda M. Barnes and her husband, David of Lynchburg; a brother, Edwin E. Lucado of Lynchburg; a sister, Cattie Perdieu of Appomattox, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Floyd Elmo “Buddy” Nuckles “Gramps”
Floyd Elmo Nuckles, 77, of 1201 Long Meadows Drive, Apt. H16, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Doris Blankenship Nuckles.
Buddy was born Aug. 31, 1921 in Lynchburg, the son of the late John Dudley Nuckles and Mary Campbell Nuckles. He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James “Frances” Wood of Lynchburg and Ms. Shirley Wood of Rome, Ga.; one stepson, Warren Blankenship; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Kenneth “Debbie” Goodman, Mrs. Sam “Patricia Sue” Stump Sr. and Mrs. David “Iris Ann” Fitzhugh; one brother, Edward Franklin Nuckles of Madison Heights; three sisters, Ruby Coleman of Rustburg, Melissa Burks and Myrtle Hudson of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren, nine step great-grandchildren and one step great-great-granddaughter.

Isabelle Ramsey Tedder
Isabelle Ramsey Tedder, 79, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998 at the Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born July 15, 1919 in Gretna, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Ramsey and Effie Love Shelton Ramsey. She retired from GTE where she was the first woman c/o Installer in Calif.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, James Moyers.
She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Moyers of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Scott Warner, Kristen Warner, Jonni Bishop and Jamie Torkelson; three great-grandchildren, one brother, Benny Ramsey and four sisters, Lorene Coleman, Thelma Clemmons, Virginia Price and Hilda Phillips.

Sallie Willie Trent
Mrs. Sallie Willie Trent, 82, of 2279 Fancy Grove Road, Huddleston, died Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 1998 at the Friendship Maynor Nursing Home in Roanoke, Va.
Born April 16, 1916 in Bedford County to the late Ted Kasey and Susie Brown Kasey. She was married to the late Cornelius D. Trent. Mrs. Trent was the owner and operator of Trent Grocery Store and she was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Huddleston.
She is survived by seven daughters, Helen Bennett and Pearl Burdette, both of Huddleston, Lizzie Tucker of Roanoke, Hattie Santos, Hazel Trent, Louise Thornton, and Dorothy Warren, all of Baltimore, Md.; one son, Bobby Trent of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Drew of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Lillian Clayborne of Roanoke; one brother, Rufus Kasey of Huddleston; a special granddaughter, Gracie Younger of Gretna; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sons-in-law; two brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Huddleston, by the Rev. William S. Goode with burial in the Trent Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m. and other times at the Huddleston residence and at the residence of Mrs. Gracie Younger at 2385 Zion Road, Gretna.

Watkins Thomas Buchanan
Mr. Watkins Thomas Buchanan of 217 Worth Street, Mt. Airy, N.C., passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife, Laura Mccormack Buchanan and two children, Meghan and Ian.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his father, Don Buchanan of Lynchburg and his mother, Linda Fisher Buchanan, also of Lynchburg. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Buchanan of Lynchburg and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Watkins Fisher of Lynchburg, as well as a number of uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
W.T. as he was known, graduated from Brookville High School in 1991 and was employed by Lowes’ Home Improvement.

Whitney Davis Burroughs
Whitney Davis Burroughs, 12, of Lithonia, Georgia, departed this life Thursday afternoon, Oct. 22, 1998, at Egleston Children’s Hospital after an extended illness.
Born November 21, 1985, she was the cherished daughter of Robert and LaVerne Burroughs. She was a member of the St. Paul AME Church and attended Stephenson Middle School.
She also leaves to cherish her memory, one brother, James Burroughs and one sister, Christina Burroughs of the home; a paternal grandmother, Lottie Burroughs of Durham, N.C.; maternal grandparents, James and Lillie Davis of Lynchburg; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was the goddaughter of William and Mellissia Strong of Avondale Estates, Ga. and Eric and Thomasena Wood of Nashville, Tenn.
Homegoing services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at St. Paul AME Church in Lithonia, Ga., the Rev. David Rhone officiating. Interment and graveside services will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the Altha Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Forest, the Rev. Warren Anderson officiating and Community Funeral Home directing.
Viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community Funeral Home.

Thomas Eugene Clark
Thomas “Tommy” Eugene Clark, 44, of Meherrin, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998. He was a crane operator with Norfolk Southern Railway, a member of Burkeville Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was an avid Girl Scout Dad, enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, riding his Harley and helping his many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Lynn Koes Clark; three daughters, Kathleen Regan Clark of Victoria, Kristina Danielle Clark and Stephanie Rhealyn Clark, both of Meherrin; his parents, Charlie and Wilma Hodnett of Burkeville, Gene and Iris Clark of Crewe, Jayne Koes of Pennsylvania; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Timmy and Linda Clark of Victoria, Glenn Clark of The Plains; a brother-in-law, Tommy Koes of Pennsylvania; three nieces and three nephews.

J. Wendell Crawford, 67, of 525 Midvale Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998 at his home. He was the husband of Peggy Holloran Crawford.
Born March 13, 1931 in Charlottesville, he was a son of the late Guy E. and Virginia Armstrong Crawford. He was retired from Lynchburg Foundry with 37 years of service and was presently employed by Kidd’s Services. Mr. Crawford was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of American Legion Post #16 and a member of Memorial Christian Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, W. Timothy Crawford and his wife, Vicki of Amherst and M. Kelly Crawford and his wife, Janice of Lynchburg; one daughter, Pam C. Whetton and her husband, Mike of Ramstein, Germany; two brothers, Guy E. Crawford Jr. and his wife, Faye of Forest and Harry (Buddy) Crawford and his wife, Linda of Ohio; two sisters, Alleene Mayberry and her husband, Elmo of Lynchburg and Mary Ann Paris and her husband, Pete of Bristol, Tenn. and six grandchildren, Meghan Leigh Crawford, Timothy Joseph Crawford, Samuel Garrett Crawford, Matthew Brendan Crawford, Joshua Taylor Whetton and Sean Michael Whetton.

John D. Cronin of Lynchburg, died on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998 at the John Hopkins Hospital one day after his 63rd birthday.

Julia Hardy Hosmer, 35, of Monroe, died Saturday, October 24, 1998, at her home following a long illness. She was the wife of Phillip Van Hosmer.
Born August 30, 1963, in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Harold E. and Marietta Smith Cordell. Julia was a loving wife, mother, sister, and homemaker. She attended Madison Heights Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Robin Hardy of Monroe and Maria Hardy of Chatham; two brothers, Mark Cordell of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Paul Cordell of Danville.

Edward Thomas Pettigrew Jr.
Edward Thomas Pettigrew Jr., 73, of Lynchburg, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Norma Newby Pettigrew.
Born April 1, 1925 in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Irene Fielding Pettigrew and Edward T. Pettigrew Sr. Mr. Pettigrew was retired as Vice President of Scott and Stringfellow Inc. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member and past president of the Exchange Club of Lynchburg, a member and first president of the Governmental Finance Officers Association and a member and former Treasurer of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Third Armored Division and was recipient of a Purple Heart and four Battle Stars.
Mr. Pettigrew is survived by two sons, Dean A. Pettigrew of Stanardsville and Alan W. Pettigrew and his wife, Ann Kendall Pettigrew of Lynchburg and four grandchildren, Meagan A. Pettigrew, Alan W. Pettigrew Jr., Kendall Reams Pettigrew and William Edward Pettigrew.
