Evelyn J. Adams
Evelyn J. Adams, 74, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Adams was born on Oct. 29, 1927 in Winchester, the daughter of the late Foster Finley and Lelia May Unger Ashley. She was a homemaker.
Her first husband, Peyton Shaffer Dunlap, preceded her in death in 1975. She married Elmer Nimrod Adams in 1985 in Winchester.
Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Joan Juanita Dunlap of Fredericksburg and Delores Ann Kuhlenberg of St. Louis; two sons, Timothy Finley Dunlap of Allen, Texas, and George Lloyd Bowman of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Wanda Miller of Roanoke, Margaret Kerns of Stephens City, Bernice Smeltzer of Gore, and Betty Cole of Winchester. She is preceded in death by her two sons, Peyton S. Dunlap and Robert Lee Dunlap.
A funeral service was held on Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Stanley officiating. Interment followed be at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Carolyn L. Cave
Carolyn Lynda Cave, 51, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at her residence in Woodbridge.
For the last 26 years she had been working for Verizon. Her hobbies included cross-stitching, skiing and watching QVC and the Food network. She enjoyed being with her kids and grandkids along with her pets Scruffy and Bumper. She was the wife of the late Paul E. Cave.
Preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy C. Bacon, she is survived by her father Leonard A. Bacon; her daughters, Deborah A. Cave and Jennifer L. Real, both of Lake Ridge; her brothers, Roger A. Bacon of Alexandria, Kenneth E. Bacon of Carlisle, Pa., Gary F. Bacon of Singapore and Raymond R. Bacon of Mission Viejo, Calif.; her grandchildren, Brian M. Cave and Christopher R. Cave, both of Lake Ridge.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle.
Arthur E. Gass Jr.
Arthur E. Gass Jr., 70, died Friday, May 31, 2002.
He was born on July 23, 1931 in Dallas to Arthur E. Gass and Alice E. Fooshee Gass.
His public school education was completed at North Dallas High School in 1949. In 1953, he graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BS degree in biology and chemistry. After postgraduate studies at Austin State Hospital, he passed the national examinations and became a Registered Medical Technologist in January 1957. In 1965, he received a MS degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, where he taught several graduate courses. After his return from a USAF sabbatical, research fellowship at the University of Chicago in 1968-69, he was elected to the research honorary association, Sigma Xi. His early career was spent working in hospitals, blood banks and laboratories in Austin and San Antonio. In 1959, he joined the staff of the Radiobiology Department at the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph AFB, Texas and continued with the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB (SAM) in San Antonio from 1959 until 1975. During this 16-year period, he authored or co-authored 20 scientific papers and one technical monograph while serving as a research chemist and instructed at SAM. The balance of 30 years of civil service was spent as a senior industrial hygienist at the National Office of the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. There he participated in the health training and education programs, the development of National Health Standards, special inspections for industry health standards and published two additional technical monographs. Mr. Gass retired in 1989 to join his family in farming and ranching a small black land spread in Guadalupe County, Texas. He had been elected to membership in the American Chemical Society, the Radiation Research Society, the Health Physics Society and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Gass was ordained and installed an elder in the Manassas Presbyterian Church in December 1976 and installed as an elder in the John Calvin Presbyterian Church in San Antonio in 1995. His participation with the Diakonia Community of the Emmaus Walk began in 1993. In that same year, he trained and worked as a Care Team Member volunteer to visit the sick in three hospitals and for their chaplains in the Baptist Hospital System in San Antonio until 1998. From 1995 until 1998, he served as a director of the San Antonio Community of Churches. He was also an endowed member of A.C. Garrett Lodge 1216 in Dallas and a joint member of Kingsbury Lodge 887 in Kingsbury, Texas. In 1997, he was elected to the San Marcos Commandery 56 in Seguin, Texas. In 1997, Gass continued his life-long interest in gardening by qualifying as a master gardener for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and in that same year he completed his training as a docent at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. He was listed in the Who's Who in Science and Engineering (1996-7, 3rd Edition) and Who's Who in America (1997-8, 51st edition). Mr. Gass was a loving husband, father, teacher, and friend; a poet and true servant of our Lord.
His loving wife, Gloria Jean Carter Gass survives him, after 48 years of marriage. His survivors are his children, Jean Kathleen Asberry, spouse Joseph and children Virginia, Malachi, Betty, Alize and Josef of San Francisco, Mark E. Gass, spouse Susie and children Travis, Amanda, Cody, and Derek of Seguin, Laura Gass Weaver and spouse Ray of Houston, Amy L. Fairchild and children Melissa, Shelbie, Alianna, Brieanne and Samuel of San Antonio, Andrew C. Gass, spouse Robin and children, Kelly, Laura and Tyler of Haymarket, and Susan G. Chichester, spouse Rick and children, Kayla and Bryan of Round Rock, Texas; great-grandchildren, Adrianna and Jeremy; and many loving in-laws, cousins and friends.
Visitation was held on Monday at Porter Loring Mortuary North, San Antonio. Services will be held today at 10 a.m. at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 8102 Midcrown, San Antonio with the Rev. Malcomb McQueen officiating. Interment will be held at Lone Oak Cemetery in Seguin.

George W. Wilbon
George William Wilbon, 51, of Sylvester, Ga., died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, of an apparent heart attack.
A native of Norfolk, he was a Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed as a warehouseman at the Marines Logistic Base in Albany, Ga.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Cornell Wilbon of Prince William County; a son, William Edward "Billy" Wilbon of Sylvester; a brother, Leonard Sampson of Norfolk; and a sister, Deloris Bentley of Norfolk.
The family will receive friends at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Fredericksburg today from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Found and Sons Chapel on Wednesday at 12:45 p.m., with the Rev. Pete Costello officiating. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.

Brenda L. Collins
Brenda Lou "Wendy" Collins, 51, of Manassas, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.
She was born March 4, 1951 in Weirton, W.Va., daughter of the late James and Louellen Long Adams. She was employed with the department of Army, INSCOM as a computer specialist, was president of Georgetown South Community Association and did volunteer work with the Manassas City Police Department.
Survivors include one daughter, Leslie Gissela Jones and her husband, Eugene of Manassas; one son, Dwayne Lafayette Collins and his wife, Denise of Manassas; five grandchildren, Elisa Monque Jackson, Alexis "AJ" Diamond Jones, Dwayne "DJ" Lafayette Collins Jr., Eugene "CJ" Cepeda Jones Jr., and Jasmine "JC" Monet Collins; and longtime companion, Paul Diggs of Manassas.

Elsie B. Dechman
Elsie Bruer Dechman, 92, of Manassas, formerly of Macon, Ga., died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Annaburg Manor in Manassas.
She lived in Manassas for the past 16 years, where she was a member of Manassas Baptist Church and was a volunteer with Securing Emergency Resources through Volunteer Efforts. In Macon, she was a high school teacher, a librarian and a longtime member of Pine Forest Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel W. Dechman and her brother, Howard Bruer.
She is survived by her children, Gordon H and Gloria Dechman of Gainesville, Elizabeth B. Dechman of Falls Church, Daniel W. Dechman of Atlanta and Michael M. and Anne Dechman of Tallahassee, Fla.; her brother, Arlynn Bruer of Alamogordo, N.M.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Michele C. DeMuth
Michele Cramer "Mickey" DeMuth, 40, of Fairfax, died last week at her residence.
She was born Sept. 15, 1961 in Davenport, Iowa, daughter of Robert Louis and Nell Jane (Dempsey) Cramer.
She graduated from Central High School, where she was a member of the golf and swim teams. In addition to her athletic activities, she was an accomplished musician, playing clarinet and first chair bass clarinet in the high school and state of Iowa bands. She was also the captain of the flag corp for the marching band.
She earned her BA in finance, graduating with honors from the University of Iowa in 1983. Her interest in music continued in college, where she played in the band and marched with the Flag Corp for the University of Iowa's 1982 appearance in the Rose Bowl.
After graduating from the University of Iowa, she moved to Virginia where she held finance positions with the State Department and TRW. She also earned a Realtor's license and sold real estate in the Washington, D.C., area for many years. She married Thomas DeMuth in Davenport in 1986.
Preceded in death by her father, Robert L. Cramer, survivors include her mother, Nell Jane Cramer of Davenport; sisters, Lisa Nesbitt and husband, Robert Nesbitt of Fishers, Ind., Julie Kolmos and husband, Kurt Kolmos of Burlington, Wash., and Susan Cramer of Los Angeles; four nieces and nephews.
Private family services and a Mass of Resurrection was held Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Davenport. Burial was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport.
Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport was in charge of arrangements.

Stanley E. Groft Sr.
Stanley Edward Groft Sr., 58, of Manassas, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Belletta Gise Groft.
Survivors include his father, Earl Groft Jr., of York, Pa.; his wife, Judith Lee Groft of Manassas; children, Stan Groft II and Joy Gantt of Herndon; Denise and Jeff Sisak of Linden; sisters, Vickie Dixon and Lorie Galbraith, both of York; two brothers, Terry Groft Sr. of Lancaster, Pa., and Douglas Groft of Pittsburgh.

Mary N. Hinson
Mary N. Hinson, 82, of Montross, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg.
She was a member of Good News Baptist Tabernacle Church, King George.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Raymond L. Hinson, who died in February 1983.
Survivors include two daughters, Ola Catlett and Lelia Loving, both of Falmouth, five nephews; two nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

John E. Sestina, 83, of Manassas, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m., at Culpeper National Cemetery, with the Rev. Marshall W. Braylo officiating.
Honors will be provided by the Culpeper American Legion Post 330 and the Culpeper VFW Post 2524.

Richard Welch
Richard "Bart" Welch, 37, of Woodbridge, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Potomac Hospital.
Born in Alexandria on June 18, 1964, he was owner of "Bart" Towing Service and was a master marine technician at Prince William Marina in Woodbridge. He was a 1984 graduate of Edison High School in Springfield. Work was his passion and he was a wonderful father who when not working spent time with his children.
He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Welch.
He is survived by his children, Britteny Nicole and Richard B. "Richie" Welch, both of Woodbridge; his mother, Margaret E. Welch of Falmouth; his brothers, Wesley of Springfield, Leslie of Harrisonburg, Ashley of Warrenton and Kelley Welch of Falmouth; three nephews and one niece.

Richard Burns
Richard Burns, 76, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Warrenton, died June 1, 2002, at Carroll Manor Nursing & Rehab in Washington.
He was born Nov. 1, 1925. He was a jockey and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include two brothers, Tommy Burns of Manassas and Samuel Burns of Washington; and two sisters, Margaret B. Curtis of Washington and Frances Sampson of Clinton, N.C.

Helen F. Howard
Helen Florine Howard, 101, of Triangle, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the Woodbridge Nursing Center in Woodbridge.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Triangle for more than 88 years. She was president of the Usher Board more than 30 years and served with the Nurses Ministry.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends.
Friends will be received at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 18410 Chapel Drive in Triangle, where services will be held at noon with the Rev. Alfred Jones Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery.

Dorothy I. Mayer
Dorothy Irene Mayer, 90, of Manassas, formerly of Hudson, Mich., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the Prince William Hospital in Manassas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Joseph John Mayer.
Survivors include one daughter, Glendora Gossman and her husband, William of Reston; two sons, Ozzie Mayer and his wife, Janet of Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Robert B. Mayer and his wife, Gail of Manassas; four grandchildren, Andy Gossman, Joseph Gossman, Scott Robert Mayer and Meagen Gearheart and one great-grandchild, Michael Johns.

Linda L. Oldknow
Linda Lee Oldknow, 53, of Woodbridge, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at the Potomac Hospital.
She was a devoted wife and mother. A nature lover, she enjoyed gardening and pets. She was a greeter for Wal-Mart.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert Oldknow and her son, Brian Yeager of Dale City.

Lloyd E. Schwab
Lloyd Earl Schwab, 65, of Bealeton, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Warrenton Overlook in Warrenton.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved to travel and he was always helping people.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Schwab; his father, Cecil Schwab; and a brother, Timothy Schwab.
Survivors are his children, Kathleen and Ronald Brown of Bealeton, Timothy Schwab of Manassas and Anna Schwab of Bealeton; his mother, Minnie Schwab of Landover, Md.; his brothers, Cecil Schwab and Brent Schwab, both of Landover, and Doug Schwab of Rockville, Md.; his grandchildren, Jason Schwab, Nikki Schwab, Suzanne Schwab, Kristina Brown, Ronald Brown and Russell Brown; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary A. Zimbro
Mary Ann Zimbro, 65, of Nokesville, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at her home.
She was born July 18, 1936 in Boone, N.C. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and her grandchildren and was the owner of Zimbro Tile & Decorating in Nokesville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Zimbro; and her father, Jefferson Hollars.
Survivors include three children, Jeff McCormack of Bristow, Annabelle Tarallo of Stafford, and Wade Zimbro of Wicomico Church; her mother, Lucy Hollars of Boone; one sister, Louise Harris of Reston and seven grandchildren.
