Turner T. Smith Sr.
Turner Taliaferro Smith Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 17, at his home, Greenwood Farm, near Haymarket. He is survived by his son, Turner Taliaferro Smith Jr. of Middleburg; his daughters, Glenore Fisk Smith of Manassas, Jaquelin Smith Gotlieb of Stone Mountain, Ga., Josephine Pendleton Smith Strickler of Richmond and Emily Taliaferro Smith Rappold of Fairfax; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , 6760 Fayette St., Haymarket, with the Rev. David N. Jones officiating.

Estelle I. Romanchak
Estelle I. Romanchak, 92, of Haymarket died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. She was a member of St. Dominic Church in Brick Town, N.J., and All Saints Catholic Church, Manassas. She was a school teacher in Jersey City for 35 years where she taught mostly at School No. 27 as a first grade teacher, retiring in 1973. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, John Romanchak. She is survived by one niece, Carolyn Wyrsch of Haymarket; one nephew, Dr. Gilbert Irwin of Manassas; six grandnieces and two grandnephews. The family will receive friends from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home, 267 Centre St., Nutley, N.J. The funeral liturgy will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nutley, with the Rev. Hubba officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. Theodore "Ted" Magos
Theodore "Ted" Magos, 75, of Springfield, formerly of White Sulpher Springs, W.Va., died. He is survived by one child, Leslie Magos; and three brothers, Harold and Don Magos and Henry Morgan. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 7600 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, where Mass will be held at noon. Interment will full military honor will be held at Quantico National Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday. Aletha A. Caterino
Aletha A. "Dolly" Caterino, 70, of Manassas, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. She was born in Boston, the daughter of the late N. Edward Caterino Sr. and Leona A. Caterino. She was a resident of Potomac Place Adult Residence in Woodbridge before moving to Annaburg Manor in Manassas. She lived in Massachusetts before moving to Virginia in 1972. She was a client of the INSIGHT program with the ARC of Greater Prince William County for many years. She was employed in various programs sponsored by the ARC, and enjoyed ARC-sponsored social activities. She was active in the Special Olympics prior to her retirement. She is survived by her three sisters, Phyllis A. Cusimano of Wells, Maine, Loretta M. Caterino of New Boston, N.H., and Jeannie Higgerson of Dover, N.H.; a brother, N. Edward Caterino Jr. of Lowell, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 8006 Centreville Road, Manassas. Eula P. Frye
Eula Peggy Frye, 78, of Midland, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at her home. She was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Manchester, Ky., the daughter of the late Joel and Maude May Creech Garrett. She was a former waitress at 3 Chefs Restaurant in Annandale and was a member of Ramoth Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Eugene Frye, and a daughter, Jean Peacher. She is survived by a son, Charles W. Frye of Stafford; a daughter, Shirley Lee Asbury of Midland; four sisters, Ada Rocha of lanham, Md., Edith Thomas of Alexandria, Edith Jones of Stewart, Fla., and Lillian Holstien of Dumfries; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family will recieve friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Mullins & Thompson Stafford Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ramoth Baptist Church, the Rev. M. Estelle Romanchak, 92, of Haymarket, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. Sylvia P. Castle
Sylvia Pauline Castle, 87, of Manassas, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. She was a member of Dixieland Travel Trailer Club and a charter member of the Hill & Dale Sams Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dewey Castle, who died in 1994. Survivors include two sons, Paul D. Castle of Front Royal and David R. Castle of Eagle River, Alaska; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. Florence A. Evans
Florence A. Evans, 69, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at home after a long struggle with cancer. She was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Missouri, and had resided in Virginia for the last 41 years. She retired from the D.C. Department of Corrections in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Evans, and a daughter, Nancy Lynch. She is survived by four sons, David Evans of Locust Grove, Bill Evans of Chesterfield, Bob Evans of San Antonio and Jim Evans of Woodbridge; two daughters, Leslie Schrier of Oregon and Carol Dionne of Tennessee; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Lutheran Church of the Covenant, 15008 Cloverdale Road, Dale City. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Hospice of Northern Virginia.

Julian Johnson
Retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Julian Johnson of Lake Ridge died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at his home. In 1952, he enlisted in the Air Force. He received his formal education at the U.S. Air Force (NCO) Military Academy. During his military career, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict with the 9th RTS. He retired from the 9th Tactical Intelligence Squadron at Langley Air force Base after more than 28 years of distinguished service. He received numerous awards and medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with six clusters and a Certificate of Commendation. He was then employed as a shift supervisor with the Department of Defense's E-Systems, from which he retired after more than 16 years of service. He was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Occoquan; a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hawkins Reeve Post 7916 Occoquan; and the American Military Society. He began his affiliation with the Prince Hall Masonic family in Wiesboden, Germany, with Aswan Temple 115 more than 30 years ago. He was a member of Triangle Lodge 293 (33 Degree), HPP Magnus Temple 3 (AEAON), Shadiack Jackson Consistory 156 and the Past Potentate Council of Magnus Temple 3. He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Adeline Johnson; four brothers, Eligh Johnson, JB Johnson, Thomas Johnson and Jessie Johnson; and one sister, Amanda Patton. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Annyepearl Johnson; one daughter, Tammy K. Hyter of Lake Ridge; one son, Thomas Julian Johnson of Lake Ridge; three sisters, Eliza J. Blevins and Evelyn J. Steel, both of Bessemer, Ala., and Rubye J, Sullivan of Montgomery. Ala.; a brother, Davie (Dessie) Johnson of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. The family will receive friends and observe Masonic/Shriner services from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Woodbridge, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Lloyd H. Newcomer Jr.
Retired U.S. Army Col. Lloyd H. Newcomer Jr., 80, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in Georgia. He was a native of Wheeling, W.Va., and had resided at the Landings in Savannah, Ga., since 1994. He compiled a distinguished career in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Susan and Lloyd Hampton Newcomer Sr.; his wife of 38 years, Joan C. Newcomer; and his second wife of 11/2 years, Sara D. Newcomer. He is survived by a daughter, Beckett Spreng of Canton, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Services will be held at Fort Meyer Chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery, with military honors. Curtiss B. Pieritz
Curtiss B. Pieritz, 71, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at his home in Woodbridge, from pancreatic cancer. He served his country as a photographer in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years. While in the Army, he served in the White House during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, in addition to having several overseas tours. After he retired from the Army, he began working for the Department of Veterans Affairs, starting as a photographer and working up to audio-visual manager. He retired from the DVA after 24 years of service. After his retirement, he spent much of his time volunteering and playing golf at Lake Ridge Park and Marina. He also designed and printed business cards and other material, and kept a scrapbook with all his designs. He was one of the original members of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Woodbridge and was a member of American Legion Post 364 and the Odd Fellows. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Pieritz. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Pieritz; four sons, Douglas Curtiss Pieritz of Leesville, La., Bryan Curtiss Pieritz of Prattville, Ala., Glenn Curtiss Pieritz of Olympia, Wash., and Scott Curtiss Pieritz of Stanardsville; one daughter, Audrey Noel Davis of Chesapeake; a sister, Patti of Cincinnati; two stepsons, Steven Thompson and Christian Williams of Woodbridge; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Medina, of Bronx, N.Y.; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and countless friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City. Mary Frances Whorton, 79, of Manassas, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Annaburg Manor, Manassas. She was born June 23, 1922, in Rappahannock County, daughter of the late David and Maude Tharpe Pullen. She was a member of Soul's Harbor Church of God in Manassas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Whorton, who died in 1969, and her two sons, Charles David Whorton and Ray Taylor Whorton. Survivors include three daughters, Frances Lucille Johnson of Stafford, Lorraine V. Mayhew of Dale City and Brenda Darlene Queen of Manassas; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Nancy I. Barholm
Nancy Irene Barholm, 78, of Dumfries, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, Tappahannock. She is survived by five nieces, Joan Boyer of Phoenix, and Patricia Roberts, Dorothy Johnson, Idella Johnson and Betts Johnson, all of Baltimore; and a cousin, Constance R. Simms of Dumfries. Charles H. Cameron III
Charles H. Cameron III of Clinton, Md., died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Cameron Jr. He is survived by his mother, Irene McRae-Cameron of Woodbridge; and two brothers, William Cameron of Heidelberg, Germany, and Glenn Cameron of Woodbridge. Arthur R. LaTour
Arthur R. LaTour, 56, of Dale City, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at his home. He had been a resident of Dale City for more than 30 years. He served in the U.S. Army as a sharpshooter and was stationed in Korea. He worked for the Department of the Navy for 35 years before retiring in July. He enjoyed motorcycles -- he was a member of the Star Touring and Riding Club, the Honda Riders Club and the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club. He was also a member of the Northern Virginia Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Deborah T. LaTour of Dale City; a son, Clifford W. LaTour of Dale City; a stepdaughter, Rebecca L. Tate of Dale City; and his mother, Maude LaTour of Dale City. Frances Robinson May, 90, of Manassas, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Manassas. She was a domestic worker in local homes, where her employers became her friends and their children were like her own. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Robinson. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Jean Johnson of Manassas; a granddaughter, Fay Jeffrey of Manassas; a special niece, Mary Lee Gaskins; and four great-grandsons. The family will receive friends 10 a.m. Friday at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m., the Rev. Willis Hogan officiating. Grace E. Stotts
Grace Ellen Stotts, 87, of Washington, D.C., died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Medstar Georgetown Hospital, Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Nehemiah Stotts; a sister Clara Tolson; and two brothers, Joseph and Charles Sprow. She is survived by four sisters, Betty Paige of Schenectady, N.Y., and Isabella M. Davis, Estelle M. Newman, and Frances L. Gary, all of Manassas; and two brothers, William A. and Spencer G. Sprow, both of Manassas.
