Todd B. Eckhardt
Todd B. Eckhardt, 30, of Woodbridge, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at his home.
He was a resident of Woodbridge for 19 years. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church. He was the beloved bass player and songwriter for the Washington, D.C.-based ska band The Pietasters for seven years. The band played for millions of fans all over the world while touring the U.S., Canada, and Europe. During his travels, he entertained both fans and fellow musicians alike with his musical ability and extraordinary charisma. He will be missed by everyone he knew and loved. He will be remembered for his unlimited compassion for anyone less fortunate as well as his unique and hilarious sense of humor.
He is survived by his parents, Gary and Eileen Eckhardt; two sisters, Kristy and Stacey Eckhardt; his grandparents, Grace Eckhardt and Jackie Bryan; five aunts, Carol Fischer, Claudia Bryan, Kristin Bryan Pisciotta, Reisha Bryan and Mindy Bryan; five uncles, Brian Fischer, Craig Bryan, Lloyd Bryan, Bret Bryan and Ralph Pisciotta; and two nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 3200 Old Bridge Road, Woodbridge. Interment will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park.
Kenneth J. Shaw Jr.
Kenneth Jay Shaw Jr., 60, of Woodbridge died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at home.
He was born June 29, 1941 in Las Vegas, the son of Mary Wanda Moppert and the late Kenneth Jay Shaw Sr.
He spent 20 years serving his country as a communication specialist in the Army. During his military service he received the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Meda, Vietnam Campaign Medal and others. He retired as a sergeant first class in 1979.
After retirement he worked in the oil industry in North and South Dakota. In 1984 he returned to a career in civil service working as communications technical analyst until 1994.
He is survived by his wife, Janis Carrol Baye; two sons, William Benjamin Shaw and Michael Robert Shaw; one daughter, Jammii Michelle Yanick; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Toni Thorn borgh, Jan Landers and Autumn Cardas; and two brothers, Steven Shaw and Mark Landers.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Chapel, 13909 Smoketown Road, Woodbridge. Flowers may be sent to the church.

Zernie E. Sedmock
Zernie Evelyn Sedmock, 76, of Dale City, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 at home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Sedmock Jr.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Scott of Culpeper, Connie Hobson of Dale City, and Roxanne Rastatter of Dale City; three sons, James Sedmock of Dale City, Paul Sedmock of Fredericksburg and Louis Sedmock of Stanley; one sister, Geraldine Simmons of Falls Church; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a resident of Dale City since 1966. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4142 Dale Blvd., Dale City. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery.
Jessie A. Blakemore
Jessie A. Blakemore, 100, of Manassas, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.
Born in Clover Hill on May 25, 1901, she moved to Manassas with her husband in 1922. She was employed at Central Mutual Telephone Co. and Rohr's 5 & 10 Store. She dedicated more than 60 years of service to Grace United Methodist Church, where she was active as Sunday school superintendent and teacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy H. Blakemore; her son, William H. Blakemore; a grandson; and her sister, Kittie L. Eaves.
She is survived by two daughters, Kittie J. Blakemore and Ann B. Ramsey; her daughter-in-law, Mary M. Davis Blakemore; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, the Rev. Rudy Tucker and the Rev. Denise Childers officiating. Raymond C. Hawkins
Raymond C. Hawkins, 66, of Manassas, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.
He was born Oct. 27, 1935, in Fulton County, Pa. In the early 1960s, he founded R.C. Hawkins Construction Co. and started building state roads in Northern Virginia. In the late '70s, the company started site-development work for Weaver Brothers in the Lake Ridge subdivision in Prince William. In the 1980s, he formed Copperland Co. to acquire and develop land into residential lots, commercial and light industry property in Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Spotsylvania counties, the city of Fredericksburg and the town of Leesburg. Over his life, he developed and sold more than 2,000 residential lots and several hundreds of acres of commercial and light-industry property.
He was preceded in death by his father, Boyd M. Hawkins; his wife, Beverly A. Hawkins; a son, Raymond C. Hawkins Jr.; a daughter, Irene Kinyon; and a brother, Norman E. Hawkins.
He is survived by his mother, Olive Irene Helman Hawkins; six children, Linda Strope of Alexandria, Brenda Worley of Riverview, Fla., Randy Hawkins of Nokesville, Mike Hawkins of Catlett, and Kim Hawkins and Tammy Hawkins, both of Haymarket; four siblings, Ruth Hilda Knepper, Clair Hawkins, Roy Hawkins and Harry Hawkins, all of Pennsylvania; and nine grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Lee Funeral Home, 8521 Sudley Road, Manassas, where a funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, the Rev. Clinton E. Owens officiating. Mary F. Johnson
Mary Francis Johnson, 79, of Manassas, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Northern Virginia Hospice in Arlington.
She was born Feb. 14, 1922. She received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Barber Scotia College and a master's degree at James Madison University. She taught at Northwestern Elementary in Rectortown, Central Elementary in Warrenton, and retired in 1985 from Bradley Elementary in Warrenton.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Brown and Teresa Conwell, both of Manassas; one son, Neal Johnson of Warrenton; one brother, Robert Lee Witherspoon of Concord, N.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Centreville, where a funeral service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, the Rev. Eugene Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Manassas.

Daniel E. O'Connor
Daniel Eugene O'Connor, 89, of Manassas, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Annaburg Manor, Manassas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Shirley O'Connor, who died in 1987.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda O'Connor of Manassas; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ora L. Phillips
Deaconess Ora Lee Phillips, 90, of Manassas, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Prince William Hospital.
She was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church in Calverton and various Christian organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Sherman W. Phillips; and one son, Sherman W. Phillips Jr.
She is survived by her son, John Taylor Phillips of Manassas; two daughters, Georgia E. Phillips and Charlotte P. Walker, both of Manassas; one sister, Airleen Gray of McLean; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

John E. (Ed) Irvine Jr., of Woodbridge died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Hospice of Northern Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Marty Irvine; one daugher, Melissa Louise Irvine of Woodbridge; his father, John E. Irvine Sr. of Mooresville, Ind.; one sister, Cindi I. Wheeler of Lilburn, Ga.; and one brother, David L. Irvine of Stafford.
A memorial service will be held at Potomac Crest Baptist Church, 12743 Inverness Way, Woodbridge, at 11 a.m. today.

Maurice Kelly Ausberry, 44, of Calverton, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.
He is survived by his daughter, Cherokee Waters of Gainesville; one brother, Charles McLennon of Calverton; two aunts; one uncle; and many other relatives and friends.

Rodney A. James
Rodney A. James, 34, of Dumfries, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge.
He is survived by a friend, John Anthony of Dumfries; his mother, Alberta Exum of Scotlandneck, N.C.; one sister, Angela James of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; his grandmother, Hattie Mae Whitaker of Scotlandneck, N.C.; and many other relatives and friends.

Ella M. Robins
Ella M. Robins, 91, of Orlando, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in Orlando.
She was born Dec. 12, 1909, in Nokesville, the daughter of the late Judson C. and Annie B. Herring. She moved to Florida in 1989. She was a retired switchboard operator for a telephone company, and was a lifelong member of the Brethren Church in Nokesville.
Survivors include her three daughters, Marie Heflin and Margaret Harris, both of Orlando, and Juanita Graham of Culpeper; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Found and Sons Funral Chapel, Pastor Deborah Frye officiating. Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Nokesville.
Mary E. Malter
Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Malter (nee Clark), died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at her home in Occoquan.
Malter retired in 2000 after working 38 years at the Army Material Command.
She is preceded in death by one brother, Robert Harry Clark.
Survivors include her husband, Stephen W. Malter; one sister, Jo Ann Loe; one brother, Patrick Francis Clark; three nephews, Mitchell Loe, Clifford Clark and Shannon Clark; and three nieces, Christine Loe, Pamela Halsey and Erin Clark. She is also survived by three stepchildren, Christopher, Robyn, and Katherine Malter.
A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 13752 Mary’s Way, Woodbridge, today at 10 a.m.

Norman Berger
Norman "Nick" Berger, of Manassas, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Hospice of Northern Virginia, Arlington.
Berger was an established businessman for over 40 years in the Manassas area. He made contributions to the community as a chief election official for the Coles and Brentsville Districts, as a past director of Didlake School and as a reserve deputy sheriff for Prince William County. He was a past president of Lake Jackson Citizens Association. In 1964, he was inducted into the Quantico Lions Club , was a charter member and past president of the Lake Jackson Lions Club where he was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
Surviving is his wife, Rose S. Berger; and five children, Raymond Berger of Front Royal, Norma Dee Arnold of Rileyville, and Kristie B. Bishop, Bettina I. Mueller and Karen B. Taylor, all of Manassas. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, four nephews and one niece.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. A private burial service for the family will be held at Stonewall Memory Gardens. Delores M. Walker
Delores Marie Walker, 68, died Nov. 22, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.
She was born in Point Pleasant, W.Va., and was a homemaker who loved being a mother. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting.
Walker is predeceased by her parents, William and Ethel Patterson, and one son, Michael Miller.
She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Walker of Nokesville; four daughters, Mary Carney of Manassas, Teresa Walker of Delaplane, and Karen Walker and Sharon Bryant, both of Nokesville; three sons, Charles Miller of Rutland, Vt., Glenn Walker of Nokesville, and Richard Berkley of Chase City; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Baker Chapel with the Rev. William B. Day officiating. Interment will follow at Woodbine Baptist Church Cemetery.
Wayne Carey
Wayne Carey, 75, died Nov. 20, 2001.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Cynthia Carey.
He is survived by his wife, Augusta Carey; one daughter, Cynthia Brennan; four sons, John Carey, Robert Carey, Wayne Carey and William Carey; and one sister, Naomi Smith.

Anthony Soltes
Anthony Soltes, 55, of Dumfries, died Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at Potomac Hospital, Manassas.
He served in the U.S. Army for 16 years until going into the reserves and retired as a Sergeant in 1998. He was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dale City. He enjoyed playing the guitar, mandolin, and the keyboard and enjoyed spending time working in the yard. He was the editor of Family Newsletter.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Consuelo Soltes of Dumfries; daughter, Rowena Manalang of Woodbridge; two sons, Emmanuel Soltes of Utah; Ronald Soltes of Dumfries; his mother, Rosenda Soltes of the Philippines; two brothers, Leonardo Soltes of California and Rudy Soltes of the Phillippines; and one granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3000 Dale Blvd., Dale City, with Bishop Brent Ossman officiating. John R. McFarlin
John R. McFarlin, Ph.D., died Nov. 22, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas, of pneumonia.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Marie McFarlin; three brothers James, Daniel, Robert; and two sisters Annaclaire Martin and Elizabeth McFarlin.
He was a beloved husband to Arlene McFarlin for the past 15 years and devoted stepfather to Scott, Christopher Matthew, Kathleen and Daniel Bowman.
Prior to his marriage, Dr. McFarlin had been a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) for 41 years and an ordained Roman Catholic Priest for 28 years. Dr. McFarlin had conducted noon Mass at All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas for seven years and was the Director of Religious Education at All Saints Parochial School for five years. After marrying, Dr. McFarlin was the Director of Guidance for three years at Manassas Park High School and also taught part-time at NOVA. He was a beloved member of the community, volunteering his services at the Adult Detention Center, and an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in both the choir and as an usher. Dr. McFarlin was well-known, well-respected and well-loved to the Manassas community as a man of great compassion, gentle good humor and boundless enthusiasm and optimism. He was a loving husband and father and even after his transition from Roman Catholic Priest to husband and father was known everywhere simply and affectionately as "Fath."
He will be solely missed.
A funeral memorial Mass will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
