Anthony Gonzalez, age 37, died Friday, July 25, 2003 in Utica, New York.
He was a former resident of Glade Spring, VA for many years and attended Patrick Henry High School.
Locally Anthony is survived by his maternal grandparents, Charles Trent of Glade Spring and Sue Trent of Abingdon, VA. He is also survived by a host of other relatives and many, many friends.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 7, 2003 at the graveside in High Point Cemetery. Interment will follow. Casket bearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M., Wednesday at the funeral home . MR. HOWARD CHARLES WORLEY, age 67, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at the Bristol Nursing Home. He was a native of Russell County, Virginia and had lived in Abingdon before moving to Bristol 30 years ago. He was a member of the Walker Mountain Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation. He is survived by:

Charles Newton Austin
Charles Newton Austin, M.D. 86, of Abingdon, Virginia died Friday, August 8, 2003, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tennessee.
Dr. Austin was a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine and was a Board certified Radiologist who practiced in Southwest Virginia for thirty-three years. He was on the honorary staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital and was a life member of the American Medical Association. During World War II he piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber out of England and was shot down on his tenth mission near Bremen, Germany, spending over two years in prison camps and on forced marches. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Unit Citation and various campaign decorations.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Vinson Austin and his sister, Margaret Hall.

Mr. Willis Harold Dunford , age 72, died Wednesday, August 13, 2003 in the Grace Healthcare Center in Abingdon.
He was a son of the late Harold Dunford and Grace Pugh Dunford. There are no known survivors.

Tommy Minnick
Mr. Tommy Minnick, age 51, a life long resident of Washington County, VA passed away at his home Saturday August 16, 2003. Tommy fought a courageous battle of some twenty years with cancer. Tommy had a sincere love for his cattle and farming. He attended Central Baptist Church and had worked for many years with American Electric Power.
He is survived by his wife: Angela S. Barger; mother: Lynn R. Minnick; daughter Elizabeth A. Minnick; sister and brother-in-law: Susie and Eddie McConnell; brother and sister-in-law: Dan and Geraldine Minnick all of Abingdon; one step-daughter: Julie Barger of Johnson City, TN; one step-son: George Barger; one nephew: Dan Minnick, Jr. both of Abingdon.

Velma Nolaree Keith
Velma Nolaree Stanley Keith, 72, went to be with her Lord, Friday, August 15, 2003 at Wellmont Hospice Home in Bristol.
Velma was born in Damascus, VA and was a life long resident of Washington County, VA. Lovingly known as “Miss Velma” by the hundreds of children she ministered to through her work in youth ministries in the Bristol area. She was an active member of Victory Baptist Church where she served as primary Department Sunday School Teacher and choir member. She loved serving the Lord, taking care of family and friends, cooking and singing with the Gospel Gordonaires.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Epperson Keith; her parents, Jacob Lawson Stanley and Lilly Rosetta Denny Stanley; one infant sister and two brothers, Coy Stanley and Tommy Jack Stanley.
Survivors include 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Deborah and James M. Sandefur of Abingdon; Carolyn and Tony Campbell of the home; and Cindy and Jeff Quales of Abingdon; seven grandchildren: Ricky Rosenbalm and wife Amber, Mary Malina and husband Jason, Travis Rosenbalm all of Bristol, Evan Jarvis, Melisha, Ben and Whitley Quales all of Abingdon; step-grandchildren: James K. Jacky Lynn Greer, Sr.
Mr. Jackie Lynn Greer, SR, age 45, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 as a result of massive heart failure.
He was born on May 21, 1958 in Washington County, Virginia. Jacky was preceded in death by his father, Howard Haynes Greer and a brother, Howard Haynes Greer, Jr. He was a U. S. Army Veteran.

Mrs. Dana Jeanne McClanahan Moore, age 55, passed away Sunday
August 17, 2003 at her residence. Dana was a graduate of the William Neff Vocational School as a Licensed Practical Nurse, she received her Associate Degree from Virginia Highlands Community College as a Registered Nurse and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia. She was employed with Johnston Memorial Hospital for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Rosell Elkins McClanahan, a sister, Sherry McClanahan and a sister-in-law, Shirley Akers.

Jewell Garland Smith
Mrs. Jewell Garland “Judy” Smith, age 79, died Sunday August 17, 2003 at her home. She was born and raised in Mitchell County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Russell Leroy and Daisy Marie Garland. After graduation from high school, she attended Lees-McRae College and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She worked at John-Hopkins Hospital in the “Blue Baby” program.
She married her husband Jack on September 20, 1947 in the chapel of the United States Naval Academy where he was a midshipman. For the next several years, Judy served as a Navy wife until the family moved to Grundy in 1954. While in Grundy, she worked as a nurse at Grundy Hospital and later worked as owner/manager of Alison’s Jewelry. In 1996, she retired to the South Holston Lake community of Abingdon.
She is survived by her husband, Jack C. Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Smith of Abingdon; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Frank David of Richlands and Sharon and Thomas Hembree of Abingdon; one brother, Claude Garland of Westminster, Md.; and two sisters, Wilma Watts of Annapolis, Md. And Ione Saylor of Westminster, Md.; 6 grandchildren, Alison David, Joshua David, Drew Hembree, Katie Smith, Melanie Hembree, and Chloe Smith.

Mr. Herman Botts, age 81, of 14057 Caney Valley Road, went to be with the Lord on Monday August 18, 2003 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, VA.
Herman was a lifelong resident of the Smith Creek Community of Washington County, VA and retired from Morrison Molded Fiberglass Products. He was a member of the Valley View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Cora Stata Botts and brothers, Cosby, Howard, Raymond and Lee Botts.

Carl Johnson Ray, Sr.
Mr. Carl Johnson Ray, Sr, age 87, died Monday, August 18, 2003 at the Grace Health Care Center in Abingdon.
He was born in Russell County on August 7, 1916 to the late Lon Guy Ray and Tishia Whited Ray. Mr. Ray was also preceded in death by a sister Irene McElraft and a brother, Walter Ray. He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-laws, Doug Ray and wife Brenda and Carl Ray, JR and wife Tammy all of Abingdon; a special friend, Eunice Ray Burke of Abingdon; two granddaughters, Jasmin Danielle Ray and Katrina Bell Reece; five brothers, Clyde Ray and Henry Ray both of Glade Spring; Robert Ray of Hillsville, VA ; John H. Robert G. Wyatt
Mr. Robert G. Wyatt, 15625 McGee Lane, died Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the NHC Healthcare Center in Bristol.
Mr. Wyatt was a lifelong resident and farmer of Washington County and was a member of the Seven Springs Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Gentry Wyatt, a son, Wesley Wyatt, a daughter, Lisa Wyatt, a brother, Reverend Mahlon Wyatt, all of Meadowview, VA, a sister, Eula Burcher, Stuart, VA. Also surviving is Dusty Crawford and Savannah Widener, these two people were very special to Bob.

Mrs. Lois Joann Casey, 66, of Abingdon died Tuesday August 19, 2003 at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon.
Mrs. Casey spent most of her life in Washington County and was a member of West Main Freewill Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed visiting family and friends, enjoyed church, music and dancing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen Glenn Richardson, Mary Jane Lowry Richardson; brothers and sisters: Franklin Richardson, Mack Richardson, Bobby Richardson, Mabel Eller and Linda Holdcombe.

Joyce Ann Tester
MRS. JOYCE “JO” ANN DAYTON TESTER, 70, went to be with the Lord on Thursday August 21, 2003 at her residence. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Pete” Tester.
She is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Linda Tester of Surgoinsville, Tennessee and Terry and Marjorie Tester of Bristol, Tennessee; 1 brother, Eddie Dayton of Miami, Florida; 1 sister, June McGhee of Bristol, Virginia; 4 grandchildren, Elizabeth Tester, Rebecca Tester, Jessie Tester, and Joseph Tester; and 4 nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 25, 2003 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Walter Statzer and the Rev. Jerry Fleenor.

Albert Reuben Hammer
Mr. Albert Reuben Hammer, age 64, died Thursday, August 21, 2003 at the James H. Quillen Department of Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center at Mt. Home Tennessee.
He was born on March 7, 1939 in Cleveland, Virginia to the late Walt Hammer and Marie Ross Hammer. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ross Henry Hammer and Walt Israel Hammer and two sisters, Mary Matthews and Josephine Mitchell. Reuben was a member of the Valley Street Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include his brother, Mose Calvin Hammer of Meadowview; a nephew, Gary Hammer of Meadowview; a great nephew, Kyline Hammer, a great niece Garrika Hammer; several other nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 25, 2003 in the Valley Street Baptist Church with Rev. William Austin and Rev. John W. Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 P.M. in the National Cemetery at Mt. Home, TN. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Church Honor Color Guard. Louis Shuman
Mr. Louis Shuman, a well-known Abingdon business and civic leader, died at his home Friday, August 22, 2003. His wife Verbeth Shuman preceded him in death.
He was born in New York City on August 18, 1915 and was a graduate of St. Johns University and New York Law School. He and his wife moved from New York City in 1950 after he was a member of the Army Air Corps during WW II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre.
He was the manager of the Abingdon Harwood Company for over 35 years. He served on the Abingdon Town Council, Washington County and Abingdon Planning Commissions and the Washington County Board of Supervisors. Mr. Shuman had served as President of the Abingdon Rotary Club, William King PTA, Virginia Highlands Festival and several other civic organizations. He was a member of the B’Nai Shalom and was the former President of the Congregation. He loved sports, discussing current affairs, but especially his family and community.
Survivors include a daughter, Leslie Kronz and husband Dr. Fred Kronz of Austin, TX; a son, Kenny Shuman and wife Doris Clendenen Shuman of Abingdon, VA; a much beloved granddaughter Sidney Adele Clendenen Shuman of Abingdon and a brother, Max Shuman of New York.
A memorial service for Mr. Louis Shuman will be held September 2, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Abingdon, VA
The family requests in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation be made to a favorite charity in his name.
Katherine Clark Jackson
Mrs. Katherine Clark Jackson, 83, died Saturday, August 23, 2003, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “T.J.” Jackson. She is survived by:

A daughter, Rosemary J. Owens and husband, James of Abingdon, Va.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, August 25, 2003 at 6:30 PM in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A committal service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Bethel Cemetery. Family and friends are to meet at the funeral home by 10:35 AM Tuesday for a procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Clark, David Clark, Nathan Moore, Mike Faust, Bruce Wankel and Joe King.
James L. Dolinger
Mr. James L. Dolinger, 78, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday August 29, 2003. Mr. Dolinger was born Feb. 23, 1925 in Smyth Co., VA. He worked and retired from Brunswick Corp. with 30 years of service as a tool engineer. He was a dedicated Christian, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a friend to everyone. James taught Sunday School, was a deacon, superintendent of Sunday Schools at Faith Baptist Church and Glade Spring Baptist Church until his health prevented him from attending church.
He was preceded in death by father, Calvin Dolinger; mother, Martha Kelly Dolinger; brothers, Roy and Willis Dolinger; sisters: Mabel and Pauline Dolinger.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ruby Jackson Dolinger; three daughters and sons-in-law and one son and daughter-in-law: Jean and Curtis Dinsmore of Bristol; Roger and Sharon Dolinger of Chilhowee; Stella and Tim Shales of Bristol; and Sandra Walker of Bristol; Also is one sister, Ernestine Caulthard of Marion; seven grandchildren: Chris Robinson of Rural Retreat; Timm Robinson of Christiansburg; Bethany Evans of Damascus; Robbie Walker of Kingsport; Ben Walker of Chilhowee; Drew Dolinger of Chilhowee; Alison Walker of Bristol; Haley Walker of Chilhowee; Derek Shales of Bristol; Nathan Shales of Bristol; Tina Mullins of Warrenton, VA and Lee Dinsmore of Warrenton, VA.
There will be a celebration of James’ life on Sunday August 31, 2003 at 4:00 P. M. at Farris Funeral Chapel. Brother Donnie Mullins, from Living Waters Baptist Church will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
We would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Bennett Cowan, Dr. Byers, Dr. Tom Green and Sue Prill and other doctors who ministered to him for their care and friendship. The CICU staff at Bristol Regional Medical Center was very helpful and supportive during his last stay. During the last 2 ½ years of his illness, the family and he received many prayers from many individuals, churches, and groups which greatly enriched his life and the family’s miracle of enjoying their husband and wife these last years.

Mildred Ritter Andersen
Mrs. Mildred Ritter Andersen, 78, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at her home.
A native of Berryville, Va., she had lived here since April, 2003. She was a member of Cunningham Chapel Episcopal Church in Boyce, Va.
She is survived by two sons, Helge M. Andersen Jr. and wife Connie of Frankfurt, Ky.; William W. Andersen and wife Xialon Chen of Hope Mills, N.C.; two daughters, Susan E. Andersen of Boyce and Brenda A. McNutt and husband Ronald B. McNutt of Bristol Virginia; one sister, Bernice Blosser of Winchester, Va.; two grandchildren, William H. Andersen of Lexington, Ky., and Catherine Thompson.
Mrs. Andersen's remains are being transferred to Omps Funeral Home in Winchester.
Funeral services will be held at Cunningham Chapel Episcopal Church in Boyce at a time and date to be announced later.

Hazel Lillian Venable
Miss Hazel Lillian Venable, 89, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at her home.
Miss Venable was born Oct. 4, 1913, in Saltville, to the late William Venable and Jessie Clark Venable. She was a homemaker, a member of Landmark Baptist Church and Glade Area Senior Citizens.
Survivors include one sister, Margaret Jaffee of Meadowview, and nieces, Lois Gayler, Carolyn Kessee, and Rita Colley, all of Glade Spring, and Evelyn Musselwhite of Jacksonville, Fla.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. Pastor Benny Bowman will officiate.
Margaret Rachel Denton
Mrs. Margaret Rachel Denton, age 81, went to Heaven in Angels arms after a courageous battle with cancer Sunday, August 31, 2003 at her residence. She was born on May 3, 1922 in Washington County, VA to the late Dewey Foran and Daisy Gobble Foran.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl W. Denton and Raymond Worley and a sister, Elizabeth Huff. Mrs. Denton was a member of the Greendale Chapel Church.
She is survived by a brother, Marvin Edgar Foran of Bear, DE; two nieces, Stella Mullikin and Joyce Foster both of Maryland; 5 nephews, Junior Huff and Earl Huff both of Maryland; Paul Edward Foran of Maryland; and Robert Dale Foran and James Gary Foran both of Deleware. Mrs. Denton is also survived by several other special family members and friends.
The funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 P.M., Wednesday in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jerry Eggers and Rev. Bob McCormick officiating. Interment and committal services will be conducted at 10:00 A. M., Thursday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the interment and committal service are asked to meet at the funeral home where a funeral procession will leave at 9:40 A.M. Thursday to go to the cemetery. Casket bearers will be Claude Worrell, Joe Tolliver, Clint Asbury, Earl Huff, Paul Foran, Warren Charles, Carson Denton and Dewey Denton. Honorary casket bearer will be Dr. Andrew Rhinehart. The family will receive friends from 6 – 7:15 P.M. Wednesday before the funeral service.
Hattie Louise Vanover
Mrs. Hattie Louise Vanover, age 76, of 21187 Spoon Gap Road, Abingdon, VA died Sunday August 31, 2003 at the home of her daughter in Wise, VA, following a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Lucy Vanover, her husband, Ira Vanover, three sisters, three brothers, three children, a grandson and a great granddaughter. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County.
Survivors include a son, Charles Vanover, Colorado, three daughters, Dorothy Hess and husband, Warren, Glade Spring, VA, Geneva Mickles, and husband, Roy, Wise, VA, Margaret Vanover, Norton, VA, a special nephew, Bobby Vanover and wife, Wanda, Glade Spring, VA, a sister, Belle Greer, Abingdon, VA, 23 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, September 4, 2003 at 12:00 noon in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Ballard and Rev. Paul Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Charles Doss, Doug Doss, Carroll Doss, James Mickles, Earl Reed, David Vanover, Roy Allen Mickles, Andy Mickles. Honorary pallbearers will be June Sell, Eric Widener, Warren Hess, Roy Sell, Wallace Sturgill.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until service time in the funeral home.
