Delaphine F. Thompson
Mrs. Delaphine Francisco Thompson, age 94, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Thompson was born on December 18, 1909 in Washington County, VA and was a daughter of the late Herbert Francisco and Nannie Dunn Francisco. She was also preceded in death by her husband L. Frank Thompson and her brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving member of her and her sibling' s family. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Wesley Chapel Church.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Joann Thompson of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Kevin Thompson & wife Jennifer of Abingdon; Kimberly Tucker and husband Kent of Speedwell, VA; five great grandchildren, Lexie & McKenzie Thompson and Katie, Courtney and Jarod Tucker; two sisters-in-law, Beulah Stringer of Abingdon, VA and Eula Francisco of Glade Spring, VA.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M., Friday, June 4, 2003 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Clifton Duncan officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Casket bearers will be Kevin Thompson, Kent Tucker, Herbert Davenport, Claude Counts, Jr., Gene Davenport and Junior Twead.
In place of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Wesley Chapel Church, % Margaret Holmes, 27274 Old Saltworks Road, Meadowview, VA 24361.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. Friday until the time of the funeral service or any time at the home of her son, Raymond Thompson.
Rosie Mae Wallace Cuddy
Mrs. Rosie Mae Wallace Cuddy, age 69, went to Heaven Wednesday June 2, 2004 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Cuddy was a native of Ashe County, NC and moved to Washington County, Virginia as a small child. She was a member of the Washington Springs United Methodist Church and attended the Blackwell Chapel Union Church. She was graduate of Glade Spring High School and was preceded in death her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Cuddy, Meadowview, VA, four sons and theirs wives; Tommy and Dina Cuddy, Roy, Utah, Rick and Debbie Cuddy, Meadowview, VA, David and Stephanie Cuddy, Fairlawn, VA, Bill and Kim Cuddy, Bill is stationed with the U. S. Marines in Iraq, two brothers and their wives, Ted and Patsy Wallace and Lonnie and Christine Wallace both of Glade Spring, VA, sister-in-law, Irene Wallace, Abingdon, VA, brother-in-law, Bill Dodge, Waynesboro, VA, grandchildren, Angie Cuddy, Bob Cuddy, Andy Cuddy, Katie Cuddy, Mikala Cuddy, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Scott Spence and Mr. Mike Hoback officiating.
Pallbearers will be Mark Gregory, Dustin Yokum, Kevin Lindsey, Andy Wallace, Jeff Wallace, Jimmy Wallace. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of the Blackwell Chapel Union Church

A committal graveside service will be conducted Sunday, June 6, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at the Blackwell Chapel Cemetery.

John W. "J.W." Campbell
Mr. John W. ' J.W.' Campbell, age 81 passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004 in Grace Healthcare of Abingdon, VA after a long illness.
He was born in Abingdon, the son of the late D. J. and Kate Gray Campbell. He was a Veteran of WWII serving as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division of the
U. S. Army. He was a member of V. F. W. Post 1994 and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles G. Campbell.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Edna Garrett Campbell; one son, David Wayne Campbell and wife, Becky, Lebanon, VA; one daughter, Ann Katherine Canipe and husband, Mike, Acworth, GA; two granddaughters, Jennifer Canipe and Kelly Canipe, Acworth, GA, two sisters; Margaret McIntyre and husband, Bill and Nancy Morefield, both of Abingdon, sister-in-law, Marie Campbell, Bristol, VA, four nephews and two nieces.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday June 6, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Dr. Don L. Paxton, Rev. John Stapleton and Rev. Jim Fuller officiating. Entombment will follow the service. Military honors will be conducted at the mausoleum by the Highlands Veterans Honor Color Guard.

Mrs. Sally Katherine Lewis ' Kate' Reynolds, age 73 died Friday, June 4, 2004 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Russell County and had lived most of her life in Washington County and attended the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Mr. Basil King Price, age 74, died Saturday June 5, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Price was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church, was a Veteran having served in the U. S. Army, and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the 1947 graduating class of Meadowview High School and he was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Laura Dove Price, five brothers, James, Arthur, Aston, Chester and David, two sisters, Mabel Jones and Leola Bingham.
Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth M. Price, Dortheda Price and Elizabeth R. Price all of Abingdon, VA, several nieces and nephews, two special friends with whom he made his home, Mickey and Bob Hayter, Abingdon, VA.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, June 7, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Sherril Dunn officiating.
The committal graveside service will be conducted Tuesday June 8, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the Knollkreg Memorial Park with military honors to be presented by the Highlands Veterans Honor Color Guard.

John Henry Goodman
Mr. John Henry Goodman age 81, died Monday June 7, 2004.
He was a native of Saltville and had lived in Wytheville for several years. He was a vendor for the past fifteen years at a local Abingdon flea market.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday June 9, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, VA.

Gloria Jean Rector
Gloria Jean Rector, age 50, died Monday, June 7, 2004 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Gloria was an employee of the Q-West Diagnostics Laboratory and was an avid lover of animals.
She is survived by her mother, Grace McNew of Glade Spring, VA; her loving and faithful companion, her dog Dallas; several aunts and cousins.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday, June 10, 2004 in Fall Hill Cemetery with Pastor Bob Neace officiating. Interment will follow the service. Those attending the funeral service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:00 A.M. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Lula Tolliver Cuddy
MRS. LULA TOLLIVER CUDDY, age 87, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and was of the Baptist faith. William Ray Ferguson
Mr. William Ray Ferguson, age 79 went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital
He was a retired employee of W & L Construction Company and a retired farmer. Mr. Ferguson had lived most of his life in the Cedar Creek Area of Washington County. He was a WW II Veteran having served in the U. S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Lexington and received the Purple Heart, Aisatic-Pacific Medal & 8 stars as well as the Phillipine Liberation Medal. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Mae Minton Ferguson; s sister, Dorothy Ross; four brothers, Delton, Pete, Winfred and Buddy and a grandson, David Bellamy.

Shawn Clifton Rhudy, age 41, passed away June 15, 2004. Eva Mae Peters Sorah
Mrs. Eva Mae Peters Sorah, age 90, passed away to be with the Lord Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Grace Healthcare Center in Abingdon.
She was born on May 8, 1914 in Washington County, VA to the late John L. Peters and Margaret Kennedy Peters. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Sorah was a retired seamstress from Harwood Manufacturing. She was also preceded in death by her husband Ernest Quincy Sorah, a daughter, Barbara Sorah Hurley and five sisters, Grace Mitchell, Virginia Andrews, Hazel Broome, Edith Heniger and Lexie Barker.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Shifflett of Charlottesville, VA,; a sister, Thelma Freeman of Columbus, MI; a brother, J. L. Peters of Sedro Wooley, Washington.; a son-in-law, Thomas J. Hurley of Abingdon; one grand daughter, Sandra Minnick, two grandsons, Todd Eastridge and Alan Hurley all of Abingdon; four great grandchildren, Travis Hurley, Becca Hurley, Amie Huffman and Zachary Howell.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, June 21, 2004 in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Interment will follow the service. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
Olie Winston Sykes
Mr. Ollie Winston Sykes, age 63, went to be with the Lord on June 17, 2004 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after a brief illness with his family by his side.
He was a son of th elate Leon and Lona Sykes. He was preceded in death by a sister Lucille Buckles and his brothers, Robert, Carlton, Fred, Harold and Jack. Ollie was an accredited bluegrass musician. In the early 1960' s , along with his brother Jack, they formed the bluegrass band the Sykes Brothers and the Bluegrass Drifters. They traveled the country and played numerous events.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Taylor Sykes; two sons, Eddie Sykes and wife Peggy of Meadowview, Tim Sykes and wife Tammy of Abingdon; grand daughters, who were their Papaw' s pride and joy, Katie Sykes, Kelly Sykes, Brittney Sykes and Kirsten Sykes; his loving companion, his dog Rocky; his sisters Virginia Matney of Lebanon, Clara Buckles of Cleveland, OH, Jean Keith of West Virginia, Katherine Keller of North Carolina, a very special siste, Verda Sykes of Lebanon; a brother, Jay Sykes of Lebanon a special niece Retha Honaker of Lebanon as well as several other nieces and nephews. Ollie was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, brother and gradfather and will be greatly missed b his family.

Hester Virginia Scyphers Kennedy
Hester Virginia Scyphers Kennedy, age 97, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 18, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was born on August 13, 1906 in Washington County, VA and was a daughter of the late John and Etta Scyphers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Roscoe Kennedy, a son Harry W. Kennedy, two daughters, Jean Scott and Mary Ann Warren, and two grandchildren Maxine Hill and Nelson Childress.
She is survived by four daughters, Audrey Mitchell, Retha Keith, Gaye Levonda Alexander all of Abingdon and Louise Corbett of Monterey, VA; twenty one grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several great- great grandchildren.
Hester was loved and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 21, 2004 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Paul Price and Rev. Kimmy Bowman officiating. Bessie Boggs Rash
Mrs. Bessie Boggs Rash, age 86, died Saturday June 19, 2004 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol. She was a native of Wise County and had lived in Washington County for 48 years. She was the last of 15 children. Mrs. Rash was a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church and the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. She had been a caregiver at nursing homes and private residences. Mrs. Rash was the widow of Winford E. Rash.
Survivors include: 1 daughter: Peggy J. Fields, Baltimore, MD; 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Robert and Loretta Boggs of Baltimore, MD, Jim and Sandy Rash and Joe and Lelia Rash all of Abingdon.
6 grandchildren and spouses: Kayla and Jay Fulwider of Bluff City, TN, Joyce and Chris Griffith of Abingdon, Steven Fields, Baltimore, MD, Michael Rash, Angela Rash and Mary Rash all of Abingdon. 3 great grandchildren: Andrea, Shannon and Ashleigh Griffith of Abingdon. Several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Boggs Rash will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park.

Mrs. Okie E. Hand, age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Emory L. Hand, three sons; Victor, Roger and Terry, one daughter, Nancy Widner. Eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday June 22, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Thurman Chapman and Mr. Jason Hand officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Frankie Stanley, Johnny Stanley, Lyhue ' Bud' Hand and grandsons.

Beulah Victoria Carbary Felty
Mrs. Beulah Victoria Carbary Felty, age 85, went home to be with the Lord Saturday June 19, 2004 at 9:56 p.m. after an extended illness at Grace Healthcare of Abingdon. She was born July 18, 1918 in Wise County, Virginia and was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Felty and five brothers. Her homeplace was at 553 Sutton Street and she was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Marie Nelson and her husband, Charles ' Bud' Nelson, Abingdon, VA, four grandchildren, Debbie Sexton and her husband, Charles ' Corkie' Sexton, Junior Cutshall and his wife, Donna Cutshall both of Abingdon, VA, Jimmy Cutshall and his wife, Chris Cutshall, Meadowview, VA, C.W. Nelson And his wife, Debbie Nelson, Jacksonville, Florida, one brother, Howard Carbary and his wife, Betty Carbary, Abingdon, VA, five great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday June 22, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA
with Rev. Tom Williams and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating.
Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Muriel Scott Bundy
Mrs. Muriel Scott Bundy, age 103, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2004 at her home.
She has been a resident of Abingdon, Va. all of her life. She attended Martha Washington College, was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and was an avid
horse lover.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Graham Bundy and two grandchildren
Rudolph George Hetzer, III and Terry Elizabeth Bundy.
Surviving are two daughters, Muriel Sarver Copeland, Abingdon, VA, Cile Sarver Hetzer, Richmond, VA, and one son, John Scott Bundy, Abingdon, VA; six grandchildren, James Randall ' Randy' Copeland, Graham Scott Hetzer, John Robert Hetzer, Alyson Scott Bundy, Sarah Virginia Bundy and Rachel Lee Bundy and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday June 23, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel.
Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park.

Mr. Richard Larry Russell, age 82, of 604 Norfolk Street, Lot 5, went home to be with the Lord June 21, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Russell attended Midway Church of the Living God where he served as Sunday school superintendent. He was loved by all. He retired from the Pet Milk Company and from Virginia National Bank. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Grant Russell and Virgie Lane Russell Foran, his first wife, Hattie Wilson Russell, two sons, David Russell and James Russell.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 33 years, Senah Little Helton Russell, one daughter, Mildred Rosenbalm Bradshaw, Abingdon, VA, two sons, Emmett Russell and wife, Marissa, Bristol, TN, Larry Russell and wife, Mary, Hudson, NC, three sisters, Virginia Blackwell, Abingdon, VA, Lillian Barnes, Wilmington, NC, Bertie Wright, Valdosta, GA, one step-daughter, Ernestine Dunn and husband, Windom, Abingdon, VA, two step-sons, Bernard Helton, Wilkesboro, NC and Robert Helton and wife, Eula, Meadowview, VA, thirteen grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Kay Widener Roark, age 62, died June 18, 2004 at Sentra Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach, VA.
She was preceded in death her husband, Roy Roark.

Penny Sue Culbertson, 43, died Sunday, June 20, 2004. She was born in Dickenson County, Virginia. She was a resident of Abingdon, Virginia and was a cosmetologist. She was preceded in death by her father, Milton Clifton Culbertson and a brother, Scott Culbertson.

Vivian Tuggle Warren
Mrs. Vivian Tuggle Warren, age 81, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Ray Warren, Sr. and a son, Carl Ray Warren, Jr.
Mr. Warren was a graduate of Meadowview High School and the Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a retired Registered Nurse with Johnston Memorial Hospital where she had worked for 25 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane Warren Edwards of Abingdon; a grandson, Rob Edwards of Abingdon; her sisters, Gladys Kestner and husband Silas of Saltville and Charlotte Branson and husband Don of Monroe, VA and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Thursday in the Farris Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 \endash 9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Pauline Gentry, age 84, died at Johnston Memorial Hospital Monday June 21, 2004, the day she would have celebrated her 63rd wedding anniversary. She was a resident of the Wyndale community and was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gentry was preceded in death by her parents Howard F. and Eliza Smith; 2 children; 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
Survivors include her husband: Tom Gentry; 1 son: Sam Gentry of Charlottesville, VA; 1 grandson: Miles Gentry, Blacksburg, VA; 1 brother: Robert Smith, Bristol and 1 sister: Margaret Watson of Bristol. A special great-great niece: Katie Neeley.

Mrs. Maxie L. Loyd, age 72, died Thursday June 24, 2004 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Glass and a granddaughter, Lisa Fields. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Nicholson and Sue Blevins both of Abingdon, VA, a brother, Red Anderson, Abingdon, VA, three sisters, Ruth Gobble, Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, VA, Ann Fugate and Kate Trent both of Abingdon, VA, three grandchildren, Randy Glass, Leslie Barrett, Gavin Blevins, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
