Mrs. E. Marie Crusenberry, age 79, passed away, Saturday, October 02, 2004, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Frank and Charlotte Stigall. She was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was song leader. She is survived by: Her husband, Roy C. Crusenberry; Three sons, Roy D. Crusenberry and wife, Rhonda of Hansonville, Va.; Randy Crusenberry and wife, Arlene of Abingdon, Va.; James Crusenberry and wife, Connie of Abingdon, Va.; A daughter, Doris Cullop and husband, Kyle of Meadowview, Va.;A sister, Sharon Hinchey Fields and husband, Robert Lee of Abingdon, Va; 8 Grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren A funeral service will be held Monday, October 4, 2004 at 2:00 PM in the Palestine Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 \endash 9 PM Sunday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Henry Edward Green
HENRY EDWARD GREEN age 62, passed away, Friday, October 1, 2004.He was born in Pennington Gap, Virginia but had lived most of his life in Washington County, Virginia. He attended William King High School and graduated from the Abingdon High School in 1961 where he was an outstanding athlete. While playing football at Abingdon, he received the Joe Latture award and MVP. While playing baseball he was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals. He also graduated from Emory & Henry College. Henry had taught several years in the Washington County School System having coached football and baseball at John Battle High School and Holston High School where he had been the athletic director. Henry started working at the Virginia Highlands Community College in 1983, serving first as Job Training Partnership Act Programs Specialist and then as Program Assistant in the Division of Continuing Education. Following his retirement, he was appointed to the Virginia Highlands Community College Board by the Washington County Board of Supervisors. He served as chairman of the VHCC Board during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 academic years and was very active in the community serving on numerous committees. He attended the Mahanaim United Methodist Church in Clinchburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Rector Green (the love of his life) and his parents, Thomas Green, Jr. and Vivian Hartsock Green. Survivors include Two daughters, Teresa Green Taylor and husband, Tracy of Meadowview, Va.; Melissa Green Nava and husband, Jose of Abingdon, Va.; A brother, Thomas Green III and wife, Kay of Wytheville, Va.; An honorary daughter, Marlene Agreda Nava.; His joy and pride, two grandsons, Palmer and Colby Taylor Also, surviving are several nieces and nephews including Amy Green (his potential kidney donor). A funeral service will be conducted Monday, October 4, 2004, at 11:00 AM in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon with Mr. Oliver Asher and Rev. John Hartsock officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 \endash 9 PM Sunday at the Forest Hills Chapel. Patricia Anne Andrews
Patricia Anne Andrews, age 50, died Saturday, October 2, 2004 at her residence. She was a native of Little Rock, Arkansas and had worked as a nurse for the last thirty years. Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Childs; two sons, Chazmin Childs and Eric Childs. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Those attending the funeral service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. Tuesday.

Carl Joe Doss
Mr. Carl Joe ' C. J.' Doss went home to be with the Lord on October 4, 2004 surrounded by his family whom he loved dearly. Carl was born April 11, 1934 in Chilhowie to Luther Blaine and Josephine Doss. He was preceded in death by his father, Blaine Doss and his grandmother, Belle Blevins of Chilhowie, VA and his father-in-law, Hugh Lane of Abingdon, VA. Carl was a member of the South Fork Baptist Church in Marion, VA. He was a former employee of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, where he worked for seventeen years before having to retire due to health reasons. He really enjoyed his work and made many friends while working there. Carl was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His greatest joy in life was his family. He was so very proud of each of his children and grandchildren. Carl is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Virginia Lane Doss. He is also survived by two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Jerry Miller of Abingdon, VA and Debbie and Terry Bryson of Kingsport, TN; two sons and their wives, James and Diana Doss of Chilhowie, VA and Michael and DeVee Doss of Abingdon, VA and one son, Barry Doss and Pam Brooks of Boone, KY. His surviving grandchildren and their spouses are; Steve and Wendy Miller and Matthew and Amber Miller of Abingdon, VA, Amy and Aaron Sizemore of Marion, VA, Chad and Hope Doss, Brandy and Greg Anderson, Kayla and Eric Mercer of Chilhowie, VA, Rebecca Doss of Bristol, VA, Kelci Jo Bryson of Kingsport, TN, Tyler Colton Doss, Powell, TN, Mary Taylor Doss, Boone, KY. Two step-grandchildren; Tracy Bryson of Asheville, NC and Todd Bryson of Portland, Maine. His surviving great-grandchildren are Kara and Ryan Miller of Abingdon, VA, Austin Doss, Shiann and Zachary Mercer and Kalynn and Jalynn Anderson of Chilhowie, VA. He is also survived by his mother, Josephine Doss of Chilhowie, VA, his mother-in-law and step-father-in-law, Susan and Lue Spiva of Abingdon, VA. Four sisters and their husbands; Joyce and Ken Smith of Okeechobee, FL, Betty and Jerry Lamb of Greensboro, NC, Shirley Hutton and Agnes Odham of Chilhowie, VA. Two brothers and their wives; Ronnie and Jennifer Doss and Doug and Velma Doss of Chilhowie, VA, two sisters-in-law; Betty Hicks and Brenda Leutbecher also many nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service for Carl will be conducted Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Mark Totten officiating. Samuel Earl Henegar, 68, of Abingdon, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA, and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Emma M. Henegar; three sons, Tony Henegar and his wife, Sandy, Michael Henegar, and his wife, Teresa, and James Henegar and his wife, Angela, all of Abingdon; four daughters, Kathy Murray, and her husband, Dean, of Meadowview, Sharon Keesee, and husband, James, of Abingdon, Donna Read, and husband, Mark, of Roanoke, and Sandy Guinn and husband, Richard, of Meadowview; 11 grandchildren; one brother, William Henegar, of South Carolina; and three sisters, Helen Williams, of Illinois, Ethel McCray, of South Carolina, and Bernice Millsap, of Abingdon. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at 2pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA. Interment will be in Mountainview Cemetery. Mr. Estes James Crabtree, age 86, went to be the Lord on Friday, October 8, 2004 at Wellmont Hospice, Bristol, TN. He was born in Dickenson County, VA and had lived in Abingdon since 1990. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Pearlie Crabtree, his wife of 60 years, Nola Crabtree, two children, Penny and David Crabtree, four sisters, Ora, Hallie, Tiny and Nigatha, four brothers, Bennie, Otis, Eldon and Tennie B. He is survived by five children, Helen Stinson and husband, Bill, Bristol, TN, Charles Crabtree and wife, Julie, Louisa, KY, Larry Crabtree and wife, Barbara, Coeburn, VA, Dean Crabtree and wife, Lana, Castlewood, VA, Jack Crabtree, Bristol, TN, 21 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, a brother, Johnny Crabtree, Buckro Beach, VA, sisters, Athanee Fleming, Clintwood, VA and Marie Johnson, Norfolk, VA. Clara Belle Grizzle
Clara Belle Grizzle, 64, of Abingdon, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2004. She was formerly of Coeburn and was of the Protestant faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Leota Eblen, her husband, Rodney Allen Grizzle. and a sister, Jan Holleman, of Madison, Mississippi. Survivors include her daughter, Melissa Moody, of Johnson City, TN; one brother, Charles Eblen, of Springfield, VA; one sister-in-law, Donna Collins; and a special friend, David Cullop. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 11, 2004 at 7pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, with Pastor John Massey officiating. The family will receive friends from 8-9pm. Interment will be on Tuesday at 11am at Maple Grove Church Cemetery in Sandy Ridge. Honorary pallbearers will be Physicians of Watauga Orthopedics, in Johnson City.

Gladys Widener Poole
Mrs. Gladys Widener Poole, age 66, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on July 14, 1938 in North Carolina, Gladys was a daughter of the late B. O. Widener and Ella (Nanny) Widener. She was also preceded in death by an uncle, Dewey Osborne. Gladys was a loving wife and mother, as well as a loyal friend to all who knew her. Gladys had been employed in retail sales and was a loyal employee to her employers through the years. Her family was her greatest joy. She enjoyed gardening, especially the flowers in her yard and flower gardens. Survivors include her husband of 49 years Bill R. Poole, SR; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill R. Poole, JR and Susan Poole; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin Poole Grubb and Ronald J. (Bones) Grubb II, all of Abingdon; her uncle, Verner Osborne of Abingdon; a sister-in-law, Alva Poole of Fredericksburg, VA and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 15, 2004 in the Mausoleum Chapel at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Danny Thompson and Rev. Brice Monroe Arington, Jr.
Brice Monroe ' Pat' Arington, Jr., of Glade Spring, VA went to be with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, October 14, 2004. He was born July 28, 1931. Pat was the son of the late B.M. ' Pat' Arington and Laura DeBusk Arington of Glade Spring, VA. Pat is survived by his daughter, Melissa and her husband, Kerry Cummings, Vancouver, WA, former wife, Ruth Ann Arington, Glade Spring, VA and their sons, Keith Arington and wife, Tammy, of Abingdon, VA, and Dr. Brad Arington of San Jose, CA. His surviving three sisters and their children and grandchildren are: sister, Doris D. ' Mickey' St. Clair and husband, James W., Huntington, W. VA, Patricia DeFord and John (Henry and Sam), Owing Mill, MD, Laura Johnson and James (Emily), Marietta, GA, J. William ' Bill' St. Clair and Danielle (Virginia and Olivia), Huntington, W. The family wishes to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia, and a personal caregiver, Kathy Wyatt of Meadowview, VA for their superior care and kindness given to Pat. There will be a graveside service at the Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery on Sunday, October 17, 2004 at 3pm in with Rev. Timothy O. Bird officiating. Special songs and music will be provided by Pat' s good friends, Ed and Sue Thomas of Glade Spring. There will be a visitation at Pat' s home immediately following the service. Linda Surber Hicklin
LINDA SURBER HICKLIN, age 56, died unexpectedly at her home. She was a native of Abingdon, Virginia and had lived in Yakima, Washington before returning to Abingdon seven years ago. She was a graduate of the University of Washington having received her bachelor degree in human psychology and had worked at the Yakima drug and alcohol counseling until returning to Abingdon seven years ago. She was an accomplished artist painting with oils and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton Surber and Mary Gay Widener Surber Mee. She is survived by:

Robert E. Lee McCracken
Mr. Robert ' Bob' E. Lee McCracken, age 63, died Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the Specialty Select Hospital in Bristol, Tennessee. Born on May 17, 1941, Robert was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia, a retired farmer and was preceded in death by his father, Jack McCracken. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Clois Alexander McCracken; his mother, Minnie Ellen Wilcox McCracken of Abingdon; a sister, Barbara Ann McCracken of Glade Spring, VA; seven brothers, including a very special brother, Ray McCracken of Abingdon; William McCracken and Marion McCracken both of North Carolina; Jackie McCracken, Sr., Douglas McCracken, and Arthur McCracken all of Meadowview, VA and Wayne McCracken of Chilhowie, VA. Robert is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 18, 2004 in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Meadowview. Casket bearers will be Johnny Alexander, Jackie McCracken, Jr., Michael McCracken, Hobart Spivey, Chris Davis, Johnny Alexander, J. J. Alexander and Michael McCracken. David Belasco DeBose, Sr.
Mr. David Belasco "Cuz" DeBose, Sr., age 76, died, Sunday, October 17, 2004, at his home. Belasco was born July 15, 1928 in Saltville, Virginia to the late Robert Bruce and Kathleen Pope DeBose. He moved to Abingdon at an early age where he remained until his death. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Ritchie Swan. He was a devoted member of the Charles Wesley United Methodist Church where he was chairman of the official board, chairman of the trustees and had a deep passion for the church' s upkeep. He was a U. S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet Ann DeBose; his son, David, Jr. and his wife, Alecia; two granddaughters, Belicia and Dominique, all of Hampton, Virginia; his sister, Katie DeBose of Abingdon, Va.; a brother in law, William E. Anderson of Abingdon, Va.; seven nieces, nine nephews, and numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, October 21, 2004, at 11:00 AM in the Charles Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald H. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors by the Lebanon VFW Post #9864. Pallbearers will consist of family members and friends. Preston Leon Bussey, Sr.
Mr. Preston Leon Bussey, Sr., age 65, passed away Monday, October 18, 2004 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bussey was born and raised in Russell County, Virginia but had lived most of his life of Washington County, VA , a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, Benhams, VA and retired from Mid-Mountain Foods with 16 years of service. He enjoyed the Atlanta Braves, hunting, Nascar and collecting pocket knives. He is survived by his wife, Dottie Bussey, Bristol, VA, his son, Leon Bussey, Abingdon, VA and fiance', Cindy Powers, his mother, Pauline Boardwine, Abingdon, VA, his two step-sons, Keith Smith and Charles Smith both of Calhoun, GA, his brother, Jimmy Bussey, Front Royal, VA, his grandchildren, Trey Bussey, Joshua Smith, Kacee Smith, Christopher Smith and Sierra Smith, a niece, Mandi Ensor and family, Manassas, VA. Mr. James William Mitchell, age 80, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at his residence in the Brumley Gap Community. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a Veteran of World War II receiving the Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Scott Mitchell, Sr., and Martha White Mitchell, two brothers, Roby ' June' Mitchell and Scott Mitchell, Jr., two sisters, Pauline Warren and Cleatis Whitehead. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Audrey Lucille Kennedy Mitchell, Abingdon, VA, his daughter, Evelyn Tignor and husband, Burnard Tignor, Abingdon, VA, his two sons, James R. Kathryn Louise McCool
Kathryn Louise McCool, 53, well-known educator in the Washington County Public School System, passed away on October 21, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. Kathy, as she was known by all, is survived by her loving husband, Gary, of 28 years; and her children, Erin and Michael, all of Abingdon, VA. Other survivors include her mother, Margaret Spaniol; sister, Janie Johnson; special aunt, Mary Jane Harris; and special uncle, George Brunskill, all of Pontiac, Illinois; her brother, John Spaniol, of Carbondale, Illinois; and nineteen nieces and nephews. Mrs. McCool was preceded in death by her father, John Spaniol; her brother, Bill Spaniol; and her sister, Jeanne Mansour. A dynamic teacher who was respected by her students, Kathy maintained a busy and full life, balancing family, community, teaching, and her love of everything Spanish. An honors graduate of Pontiac High School in 1969, Kathy continued her studies by earning her degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois in 1973. She continued a lifetime of enriching her mind and expanding her teaching skills through graduate studies at the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the CIDOC Spanish Institute in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Kathy began her thirty year teaching career at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, Illinois, later moving to Virginia in 1978. She had taught in Washington County since then at both Holston and Abingdon High Schools. She had also served as an adjunct professor at both Virginia Highlands Community College and King College. She was well known in the community for sponsoring student trips to Europe, and had worked with Emory and Henry College for many years mentoring and training future Spanish teachers. She had served on state textbook committees and had been president of FLAVA(Foreign Language Association of America). Active in community and church work, Kathy had been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church since moving to Abingdon and had been a past president of the church Parish Council. She had worked tirelessly throughout the years organizing Spanish masses and English tutoring sessions for migrant workers. Kathy had worked with both the town of Abingdon and Washington County Sheriff' s office as an interpreter for Spanish speaking people who needed assistance. Many in the Spanish speaking community in the area looked at Kathy as a friend, guide, and a connection to the community at large. Kathy took the most pride in her role as a wife, mother, and friend to those closest to her. Dependable to a fault, Kathy could always be counted on for any and every thing. She will be surely missed by all who were blessed to have known her. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 9am, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 820 East Main Street in Kathy' s honor. The family will receive friends beginning at 2pm at the church, where a memorial service celebrating Kathy' s life will be held at 6:00 PM. A wake (reception) will follow the memorial service in the Parish Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be Bo Catron, Bill Andrews, Tyler King, Bill King, Bob LeGard, and Jim Baldwin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, so that the creation of a memory garden may be formed, which was a request of Kathy' s. It was also her wish to thank Dr. Thomas Johnson, Dr. John Fincher, Dr. Martin Monahan, Dr. Emory Robinette, Dr. Forrest Swan and their staffs for the kindness and care they provided her during her struggle with cancer. It was her sincere wish for everyone to continue to support efforts in the research and development of finding cures for cancer. The family extends its gratitude for the support, love and sympathy shown by the community and friends honoring Kathy' s life and her many contributions to her students and community.

Ernest Lee Blevins
ERNEST LEE BLEVINS, 79, of Abingdon, passed away Monday, October 25, 2004. Mr. Blevins was originally from Smyth County, VA, but had lived in Washington County for many years. He was a retired correctional officer for the State of Virginia, and had been a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Blevins was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Oralee Blevins. He is survived by his daughter, Henrietta Vannoy, and her husband, Raymond, of Damascus; 1 sister, Erma Martin, and husband, Jack, of Chilhowie; 2 grandchildren, Amanda Davis, and husband, Warren, and Nathan Phillips, and wife, Regina, all of Knoxville; 2 step grandsons, Robert Vannoy, and wife, Melissa, and David Vannoy, and wife, Sarah, all of Damascus; 1 great granddaughter, Onalee Davis, of Knoxville; 6 step great grandchildren, all of Damascus; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Rosalee Campbell, of Mountain City, TN. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 2pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-9pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Richard Kevin Beaver
RICHARD KEVIN (RICK) BEAVER, 35, of Johnson City, Tennessee, formerly of Lebanon, passed away Sunday, October 24, 2004. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Michael Beaver. Rick is survived by his mother, Maxie Johnson Culbertson, and her husband, Raymond, of Lebanon; his father, Lonnie Beaver, and his wife, Brenda, of Johnson City, TN; his step grandfather, Teddy McCoy, of Abingdon; one brother, Jeffrey Beaver, and wife, Kay, of Mount Airey, NC; one sister, Deborah Ellen Beaver, of Rockville, MD; 1 stepbrother, Jeffrey Culbertson, of FL; 4 stepsisters, Susan Hunsaker of Coeburn, Robin Tindell of Knoxville, Kimberly Feathers of Kingsport, and Angela Hoskins of London, KY; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 11am at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA with Pastor Bill Delp and Brother Paul Stanley officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Beaver Family Cemetery in Castlewood, VA.

Delzia Irine Harmon Reynolds
Mrs. Delzia Irine Harmon Reynolds, age 87, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at the home of her son, S. L. She was a member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac ' Ike' Reynolds, sons, Douglas Reynolds and William J. Reynolds, daughters, Margie Reynolds and Cleo Warner. Survivors include her sons, S. L. Reynolds and wife, Beatrice, R. J. Reynolds and wife, Janie and Don L. Reynolds, all of Abingdon, VA, her daughter, Lois Ketron and husband, Les, Abingdon, VA, 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Les Ketron and Rev. Paul Price officiating. The committal service will be conducted Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 12:30 p.m. Thursday for the procession to the cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Parlee Evelyn Heath
Mrs. Parlee Evelyn Heath, age 79, died Thursday, October 28, 2004, at the Specialty Select Hospital in Bristol, Tennessee. Born on March 21, 1925 in Watauga County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Jessee Yarber and Mae Waters Yarber. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ruby Smith. Mrs. Heath was a member of the Mount Carmel Christian Church in Meadowview and loved growing her many varieties of flowers as well as taking care of her flower gardens at her home. She was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed feeding them also. She is survived by her husband, James D. Heath; two daughters, Joyce H. Eller and husband Steve of Chilhowie and Janet Campbell of Glade Spring; one brother, Junior B. Yarber of Meadowview; a sister, Goldie Salyer of Meadowview; two grandchildren, Ryan Eller of Chilhowie and Leann Nunley of Abingdon. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, October 30, 2004 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. David Mumpower officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery. The family will receive friends at the graveside Saturday from 10:30 A.M. until the time of the service or any time at the home of her daughters Janet Campbell, 31208 Old Stage Road, Glade Spring, VA or Joyce Eller528 Haynes Avenue, Chilhowie, VA.
