Florence R. Hayes
Florence Robinson Hayes, 90, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the Center on Aging and Health in Erwin, Tenn. She moved to Abingdon in 1972, coming from Demerest, N.J. She was born in Birmingham, Ala., in 1911. From the age of 16, she performed in major roles on the Broadway stage and became well-known in radio to audiences from coast to coast and was equally successful in the field of television.
Florence started her theatrical apprenticeship at Eva Le Gallienne's famous Civic Repertory Theatre in New York City along with Burgess Meredith, Howard DeSylva, diretor Robert Lewis, Richard Waring and others who attained prominence in the theatrical world. Her debut was as "Liza" in "Peter Pan," and then appeared in "Cradle Song," "The Inheritors" and "Redemption," among other productions.
An article she wrote in the Sunday Drama section of the New York Times brought her to the attention of Elmer Rice, who gave her the female understudy assignment in "We, the People," which played at the famous Empire Theatre in New York, in The Milky Way, and finally an important role in the 1934-35 Broadway comedy, "Personal Appearance." The play was directed by Antoinette Perry, for whom the famous "Tony" Awards are named. Her role of "Gladys Kelcey" won her critical plaudits and awards, a role she played for over eight hundred performances.
Florence then turned to radio and was to perform on four to five thousand shows on all of the major networks, including many popular soap operas such as "Helen Trent," "Just Plain Bill," "Stella Dallas," "Front Page Farrell," "Big Sister," "Aunt Jenny's Real Life" and other shows such as "Mr. District Attorney," "Under Arrest," "Big Story," "Official Detective," "City Hospital," "Studio One," "Norman Corwin Presents," "The Molle Mystery Theatre" and many others.
In the field of television, she made her debut on "The Silver Theatre," the first performance bringing her the first acting award ever given in television, to be followed by "The Kraft Theatre," "I Spy," "Philco Playhouse," "City Hospital," "The United States Steel Hour," "Red Buttons Show," "The Edge of Night," "Search for Tomorrow," "Trial by Jury" and others. These were interspersed with appearances on Broadway shows such as "Steps Leading Up" and "The Assassin."
In 1963, she became an administrative assistant in the Broadway Department of the Actor's Equity Association, the legitimate theater union, and later became very active in speech teaching, specializing in diction and voice placement, in dramatic coaching and in auditioning talent for Studio '69 of Theatre Arts in London.
While in Abingdon, she became active in the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Highlands and was a volunteer with Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her stepchildren, Cole Hayes of Huntington, N.Y., and Aimee H. Bakken of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Helen R. Amchin of Boca Raton, Fla., and Mildred Sherman of Bayside (Queens), N.Y.; and four step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Dr. Robert W. Hill officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Highlands, P.O. Box 238, Meadowview, VA 24361.
