Carl L. Smith of 313 Mia Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Sullivan County and son of the late Walter and Hattie Williams Smith Hostchkiss.
He was owner and operator of S&S Motors, a U.S. Army veteran and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara J. Barr Smith; daughter, Nicole "Niki" Adams of Bristol, Va.; special son-in-law-to-be, Jeffrey Woods of Bristol, Tenn.; sister Della Brown of Randolph, N.Y.; brother Charles Smith of Bristol, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Billie Jean Eller of Cleveland, Ohio.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Mangrum officiating. Graveside services were conducted Friday in Glenwood Cemetery. Lillian Vanover, 75, of 2102 Catherine St., Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a daughter of the late Floyd and Hester Pendergrass. She was a retired employee with Days Inn and she was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She was preceded in dea th by her husband, Walter H. Vanover; a brother, Louis Pendergass; and a sister, Louise Fleenor.
Survivors include nine children, Louis Vanover of Bristol, Va., Doris Karshner of Bristol, Va., W. Walter Vanover of Richmond, Mary Lou Barker of Blountville, Ronnie Vanover of Bristol, Va., Linda Pugh of Tucson, Ariz., Barbara Jean Perry of Bristol, Tenn., Bonnie Hobbs of Memphis, Tenn., and Danny Vanover of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Charlotte Jones of Bristol, Tenn., and Shirley Gross of Bristol, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

CLINTWOOD - Delona Rosey Ball Bowman, 89, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Dickenson County Medical Center. She had lived most of her life in Dickenson County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Bowman. Also preceding her were four sons, Billy Robert Bowman, Clyde Bowman, Claude Bowman and Hobert Bowman; and three daughters, Irene Bowman, Molly Perry and Linda Ingram.
Her survivors include: daughters, Emma Jean Beverly of Clintwood, Rebecca Mullins of McRoberts, Ky., Buena Mae Bottomlee of Elyria, Ohio, Zella Ann Maddin of Elkhorn, Ky., Edna Eunice West of Charleston, W.Va., and Mary Miller of Purceville, Va.; sons, Audie C. Bowman and Aldon E. Bowman, both of Spotsylvania, Va., Lester R. Bowman of Bristol Virginia, Elex Dale Bowman of Kearneysville, W.Va., Louis Bowman of Spotsylvania and Joe Bowman of Charleston, W.Va.; sisters, Ellen Potter of Ashcamp, Ky., and Odell Deloach of Clintwood; 23 granddaughters; 21 grandsons; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Franklin Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Fleming Family Cemetery, Big Ridge. ST. PAUL - Billy Jack "B.J." Coleman, 67, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Select Specialty Hospital-Tri-Cities in Bristol Tennessee after a brief illness.
He was born in Elkhorn City, Ky., the son of the late Albert and Louisa Looney Coleman. He was retired from CSX Railroad after 32 years of service and he worked for Clinchfield Railroad and Seaboard System. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Joyce Coleman.
He is survived by one daughter, Yvonne Cole and husband, Arthur of Huntsville, Ala; one son, Tony Coleman of Pikeville, Ky.; one stepson, David Artrip of Kingsport; two sisters, Trixie Spradlin of Elkhorn City, Ky., and Ruth Fisher of Knoxville; two brothers, Buford Coleman of Elkhorn City and Warren G. Coleman of Erwin, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Kaela McGuire and Danielle Coleman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with the Rev. Leonard Ferguson officiating. SALTVILLE - Mr. Edward T. "Eddie" DeBord Sr., 52, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of Allison Gap First Church of God. He was an honorary member of the Saltville Fire Department and had been a bus driver for Smyth County Schools for 27 years. He currently worked for the Smyth County Sheriff's Department as a jailer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Stella DeBord; and a brother, Bill DeBord.

DORAN, Va. - Mr. Elroy Dowdy, 81, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, in a Richlands hospital following a long illness. Born at Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Susie Johnson Dowdy. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Dowdy Jr., Ermel Yopp, Melvin Dowdy, Albert Lee Dowdy, Ed Dowdy, Walter Dowdy and Frankie Dowdy; and sisters, Ruth Murray, Marie Harper, Mary Bailey, Roberta Dowdy, Eunice Dowdy, Blanche Holloway and Nannie Perkins.
Mr. Dowdy was a retired coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company.

NORTON - Jonathan Wayne Freeman, 36, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, passing in his sleep. He was born on Aug. 17, 1966, at Pound, Va., where he lived most of his life. He had worked as a carpenter and a painter. Jonathan was a member of Zion Family Ministries, Wise, Va.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Nevonda Jones; his paternal grandfather, Guy L. Freeman; and his stepmother, Elizabeth Jackson Freeman.
Survivors include his daughter, Tiffany Freeman, Pound; his father, James R. Hobert Hess
COUNCIL, Va. - Mr. Hobert Hess, 86, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at his home. Born Feb. 8, 1916, in Venia, Va., he was a son of the late Elijah Henry "Doll" and Mary Ellen Harris Hess. He had spent most of his life in the Council area. He was a member of the Venia Chapel Free Will Baptist Church since July 1942, where he had served as a deacon since October 1947 and Sunday School superintendent for the past 38 years. He was a retired coal miner with Red Jacket Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA Local 7327.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Rutha Caroline James Hess; one son, Orbin Nelson Hess; two brothers; and one sister.

Shelton B. Hillman Sr.
Shelton Burns Hillman Sr., 82, of Bristol Tennessee, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Richmond, a son of the late James N. and Ethel Powell Hillman, and grew up on the campus of Emory & Henry College, where his father was president from 1922 to 1941. He received his B.A. degree from Emory & Henry College in 1941 and his M.B.A. degree from V.P.I. in 1942, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Hillman practiced as a C.P.A. in Bristol for over 40 years and was a member of State Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha Anne McDonald of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; a son, Shelton B. Hillman Jr. and his wife Gay of Bristol Tennessee; four grandchildren, Catherine Wagner of Los Angeles, Calif., Ben Wagner of Tucson, Ariz., Kate Hillman of Bristol and Seth Hillman of Anchorage, Alaska; and a great-granddaughter, Marley Hillman.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Cardwelltown Freewill Baptist Church. He was retired from Olin Chemical Corporation. He was preceded in death by one son, Ricky Allen Holmes.

Albert Sidney Kelly Jr., of Bristol, Tennessee, died Tuesday evening, October 29, 2002, in Savannah, Georgia.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Holton Kelly; a daughter and son-in-law, Neville and Philip Lawson of Knoxville, Tennessee; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Vernon Daniel of Lexington, Virginia; a step son and step daughter-in-law, Chip and Rebecca Freeman of Asheville, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Annie and Kelly Lawson, and four step grandchildren, Holton, Andrew, Rebecca and Thomas Freeman.

Rita Faye Lester
ROSEDALE, Va. - Mrs. Rita Faye Lester, 44, went to join the Lord Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in a Richlands hospital. Born Sept. 22, 1958, in Richlands, she was a daughter of Lorraine Johnson Harris of Council, Va., and the late Everett Harris. A lifelong resident of the Buchanan and Russell county areas, she was a member of the Tunnel Hill House of Faith in Honaker. She had attended Council High School and was formerly employed as a seamstress at Lebanon Apparel. She was a faithful servant, loving wife and devoted mother.
In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Doyle Lester of the home; one daughter, Amanda T. Lester of Berea, Ky.; two sons, Teddy D. Lester of Gray, Tenn., and Phillip D. Lester of Radford, Va.; one brother, Michael Harris of Council, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Gerald Lester and Rev. Daniel Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.

Homer William Lunsford of Bristol Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Bristol Nursing Home. He was a native of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Thomas Nelson and Laura Worley Lunsford. He was a retired farmer and livestock trader and was a member of State Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include: son, Jerry A. Lunsford and wife Joyce of Bristol Tennessee; sister, Helen Hunsucker of Blountville; grandchildren, Pamela and husband Mike Jackson and Ava and husband John Johnson, both of Bristol Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Aaron Johnson and Whitney Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Lunsford; and a daughter, Ava Joyce Lunsford.

ST. PAUL - Dennis "Dee" Mullins, 66, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton, Va.
He was born in West Dante, Va. , the son of the late Hubert and Sadie Miller Mullins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Mullins; one son, Gary Mullins; and one sister, Agnes Frazier.
He is survived by eight daughters, Sandra Steffey of Hickory, N.C., Darlene Johnson of Dante, Va., Frances Bradley and Teresa Freeman of Coeburn, Denise Gaylor of Longview, N.C., and Pamela Owens, Patricia Watkins and Lou Ann Browning, all of Hickory; two sons, Dennis Ray Mullins of St. Paul and Michael Mullins of Hickory; two sisters, Roetta Evans of Coeburn and Fredia Younce of Kentucky; three half-sisters, Corine Hileman, St. Paul, Elaine Ray of Florida, and Lilina Gilbert of Nora, Va.; one brother, Darvin Mullins of West Virginia; two half brothers, Orbie Mullins of Hickory and Tommy Mullins of Dante; 31 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the Sandy Ridge Old Regular Baptist Church, St. Paul, with Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Mullins Cemetery, West Dante. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ollie C. Parks
SUGAR GROVE, Va. - Ollie C. Parks, 96, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at her home. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Parks was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Parks; two sons, Elmer and Marvin Parks; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is survived by five daughters, Katherine C. Grubb and Clara Mae Smith, both of Rural Retreat, Va., Lydia Sheets of Atkins, Va., Chloetta Hutton and husband Bobby of Marion, and Dottie Hicks of Sugar Grove; two sons, Guy Parks and wife Charlotte of Sugar Grove, and Jerome Parks and wife Wanda of Dalton, Ga.; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews; and many great neighbors and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Kenny Price and Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in New Bethel Cemetery, Wythe County, Va. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Margaret B. Puckett
ABINGDON - Mrs. Margaret B. Puckett, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at her home. She was born in Cleveland, Va., and in 1947 moved to Coeburn, where she and her husband operated a grocery store. In October 1966, Mrs. Puckett moved to Abingdon. She was of the Church of the Brethren faith and enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and quilting. She was the widow of Thomas Jefferson Puckett and the daughter of the late Gran and Amy Sutherland Rasnake of Cleveland. She was preceded in death by two brothers and seven sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Lou Puckett of Abingdon and Nancy Puckett Parker and husband Fred of Meadowview. Also surviving are special nieces, Betty JoAnn Rasnake of Lebanon, Sherri Harvey and husband Marty of Johnson City, Tammy Burke and husband Gary of Suffolk, Va., and Lori Beth Burke of Suffolk; nephews, Eddie Rasnake of Lebanon and Jonathan Dean Harvey of Johnson City; special friend, Virginia Buskell of Abingdon; special pet, "Princess"; and other nieces and nephews from the Fanis family.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. J. Fred Parker and the Rev. Mike Bowers officiating. Family and friends may meet at the funeral home for a procession to the cemetery at 10:45. Pallbearers will be Eddie Rasnake, Gary Burke, Marty Harvey, Richard Fanis, Jonathan Dean Harvey, Ralph Booher Sr. and Jim Holmes. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Campbell, Dan Stevens and Jack Taylor.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Delpha Sherwood
Mary Delpha Sherwood, 76, of 1636 Kentucky Ave., Bristol, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Sherwood was a native and had spent most of her life in the Bristol area. She was an employee of the State Line Restaurant and was retired from the Country Club of Bristol. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith. Mrs. Sherwood was preceded in death by husband, Oscar Edward "Eddie" Sherwood; her parents, James Robert and Stella Belle (Keaton) Hopkins; seven brothers and sisters; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the angels of the nursing staff of the Bristol Regional Medical Center 3 West, 4th floor skilled nursing and CICU nursing staff, Dr. Michael Fletcher, Dr. Pierre Istfan, Dr. Neil Wallen, Dr. John Byers and the nurses at Cambridge House.
Survivors include four daughters, Dr. Barbara Carrier, Carolyn "Sadie" Williams, Janie Carrier Nidiffer and Mary "Martie" Reed and her husband Curt, all of Bristol; two sons, Johnny W. Carrier of Bristol and Steven K. Carrier and his wife Rosella of Trophy Club, Texas; and three special sons-in-law, Monty Phelps, Joe Riley and Kenneth Coble. Also surviving are the following grandchildren, Van-Kerry Vinson of Indianapolis, David Williams and wife Carlena of Bristol, Aaron Williams Riley of Bristol, James Lee Riley and wife Denette of Bristol, Melissa Carrier Vincill and husband Sam of Bluff City, Gregory Tab and wife Sonja Carrier of Talbot, Tenn., Cindy Carrier Spurgeon and husband Howard of Piney Flats, Melanie Blair Burton and husband David of Bristol, Jon Booher of Lubbock, Texas, Ashley Carrier of Trophy Club, Shawn Reed of Bristol, Kammee Cassady Lindsey and husband Shawn of White House, Tenn., Joseph Cassady and wife Brandy of Nashville and Hunter C. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.

Jerry Johnny Shoupe
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Mr. Jerry Johnny Shoupe, 64, passed away at his home on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Delaphine Shupe; and one grandson, Eric Barr, He was loved very much and will be greatly missed.
Survivors: six daughters, Derenda Shoupe, South Pittsburg, Tenn., Rhonda Kay Shoupe, Cleveland, Tenn., Elizabeth Gail McElfresh, Meadowview, Florence Taylor, South Pittsburg, Sharon Sutterfield, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Betty Skin, Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold Dean and Lois Shoupe, Saltville and James and Alice Shoupe, Anchorage and Saltville.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Odell Little, Saltville and Delorse and Walter Helton, Saltville; eight grandchildren, Summer Delp, Casey Shreeves, Josie Helton, Travis Johnson, Moses Taylor, Larry Taylor Jr., Erika Danielle Shoupe, Chasity Sutterfield; one great-grandchild, Autumn Henderson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Henderson Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bill Delp officiating. Honorary minister will be Rev. James Robbins.
