Mavis G. Brown
ABINGDON - Mavis Gumm Brown, 83, a resident of the Green Spring Community near Abingdon, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at her residence.
She was a native of Washington County, Va., who attended Virginia Intermont College and Emory & Henry College. She was a graduate of George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University with a bachelor of arts degree.
She was a member of the Blacks Fort Chapter of the DAR and the Washington County Historical Society.
She was a retired teacher with the Washington County Schools.
She was a very active member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church.
She was a daughter of the late W.C. Gumm and the late Winifred Talbert Gumm Stickley.
Survivors include: her husband, Aubrey E. Brown Sr. of Abingdon; two daughters, Dr. Mavis Hendricks Brown and Jennie Lou Brown, both of Richmond; a son, Aubrey E. Brown Jr. of Wilkesboro, N.C.; two half-brothers, Dr. George H. Gumm of Wise and James M. Gumm of Nashville; one grandson, Jackson Lee Brown of Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Chapin officiating.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of memorial contributions to the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 22007 Green Spring Church Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.
The family will receive friends at the Campbell Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday evening.

JoAnn Whitson Cuddy
JoAnn Whitson Cuddy of Bristol was called to her eternal reward by the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002. She firmly believed that our lives do not end when we die but simply change.
She held a bachelor of arts degree from Oregon University and a master of arts degree from Stanford University in California. She was a teacher for many years in California and in France. She tutored in Kingsport's literacy programs and was a volunteer teacher at St. Anne's School in Bristol.
Mrs. Cuddy was a genealogist with membership in the Jamestown Society, Charlemagne Royal Order and many others. For years she wrote the newspaper column on genealogy titled, "Steps to the Past."
Jo Ann had a life long love of classical music and was a charter fund raiser for the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra of which her late brother was founder and conductor. She was organist for St. Ann's Chapel at Stanford University. She served on the local board of MACO and the Music Club. She enjoyed international travel and biblical archeology. In Connecticut, she was a founding member of the Birthright Chapter.
Born in Boise, Idaho, to Ted and Aileen Whitson, she was the wife of Dan J. Cuddy; mother of daughter, Celia A. Cuddy of Burlington, Vermont; and son, Tom J. Cuddy of Austin, Texas; grandmother of granddaughter, Lucy Ann; and grandson, Seamus; sister of Thomas Whitson of Santa Rose, Calif.; and sister-in-law, of Dr. Gerald Cuddy of East Haven, Conn., and Rev. John J. Cuddy of Macon, Ga.
She was recently preceded in death by her brother, William Whitson of Palo Alto, Calif.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Anne's Catholic Church with Rev. John J. Cuddy, the celebrant, and Rev. Timothy E. Keeney, the concelebrant. Inurnment will follow in St. Anne's Church Cemetery Wall of Remembrance. The Rosary will be said Friday evening at 6 o'clock at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The JoAnn Whitson Cuddy Scholarship Fund has been established for St. Anne's School. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Fund, c/o St. Anne's School, 300 Euclid Ave., Bristol VA 24201. EXETER, Va. - Funeral services for Harry "Preacher" Jacob Fannon Jr. will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at the Appalachia Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Roy Smith and Rev. GLADE SPRING - Mrs. Robin Joylyn "Joy" Clarke Freeman, 34, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was an honor graduate of the 1986 Class of R.B. Worthy High School in Saltville, and a graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College with an associate degree in radiology tech program. She was formerly employed by Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion as a radiology technician. She was a member of the United Methodist church.
Joy is survived by her husband, Kevin Freeman; a daughter, Kristen Lyn Freeman of the home; her parents, Rev. Robert E. Clarke and Florence Edwards Clark of Chilhowie; a brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Jackie Clarke of Saltville; a nephew, Wesley Clarke; an uncle, Leon Clarke of Glade Spring; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bobby and Naomi Freeman of Bristol Virginia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Danny and Kathy Freeman of Abingdon and Mark and Renee Freeman of Bristol Virginia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Amanda and Larry Miller of Bristol Virginia; several special aunts, uncles and cousins; a very special friend, Ronna Blevins of Marion, friends of the Tate's Chapel United Methodist Church and the Dialysis Center of Marion.
Robin Joy was a wonderful and special lady who knew no stranger and engaged in many community activities during her life until her illness prevented her from doing so. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

He was born in Russell County, Va.,. the son of the late Charlie and Nannie Jessee Minton. He was a member of Castlerun Baptist Church in Castlewood and was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Minton; one daughter, Gale Jackson and husband Mark of Pounding Mill; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Jackson and Alexander Jackson; one sister, Mary Lou Duple of St. Paul; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy L. Thomas Pennington, 76, of 200 Old Airport Road, Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 1, 1926, in Roanoke and had lived most of her adult life in the Bristol area. She was a retired employee of Bristol Memorial Hospital Housekeeping Department and was a former employee of Hecht's Bakery. She was a member of the Pleasant View Baptist Church in the Wideners Valley Community. She was preceded in death by her father, James E. Thomas; a brother, Charles J. Thomas; and a son-in-law, James Price.
Survivors include: husband of 54 years, Luther M. Pennington; daughter, Margie Price; grandson, Robby Price; mother, Edna Widener Thomas; brother, Dean Thomas and wife Ann; step-grandchildren, Carol Warren, Charles Price and Tim Price; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

MENDOTA - Mrs. Macy Kennedy Sage, 78, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002.
She is survived by a son, Lonnie Daniel Sage; sisters, Geneva Lewis, Ruth Mays, Ann Rutledge and Rosie Elliott; brother-in-law, Jimmy Rutledge; nieces, nephews and cousins; and an aunt.

Edith G. Sturgill
BIG STONE GAP - Edith G. Sturgill, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 27, 2002 at Berkshire Nursing Home in Vinton, Va., after a short illness. She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap and a member of Ayers Chapel Primitive Baptist Church for more than 80 years. Mrs. Sturgill was a retired employee of the old East Stone Gap Elementary School.
Mrs. Sturgill was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Ray W. Sturgill; a daughter, Charlotte Faye East; her parents, Harrison and Clara Giles; brothers, Oliver, Winston, Clarence and Talmadge Giles; and sisters, Edna Caudill, Reba Johnson and Nell June Litton.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy and husband Burrall Paye of Roanoke; sons, Phillip and wife Mary Lou Sturgill of Downingtown, Pa., and Greg and wife Kathy Sturgill of Vinton; grandchildren, Patrick and wife Michelle Paye, Jennifer and husband Paul Busick, Andrew Sturgill, Steven Sturgill, Sean Sturgill and Aaron Sturgill; and great-grandchildren, Rylan Paye and Katie Busick. She is survived by a brother, Herman Giles of Bristol Tennessee; and a sister, Marjorie Jones of Big Stone Gap. She is also survived by her longtime friend and companion, Nancy ( "Toon" ) Belton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. Funeral services will be held at Holding Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Hugh Bowers officiating. Interment will be in Glencoe Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

Margie B. Thompson
GRUNDY - Margie Belcher Thompson, 82 years of age of the Home Creek section of Route 1, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Epp and Martha Potter Belcher. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband of 64 years, Samuel Preston (Sam) Thompson of Route 1, Grundy; seven daughters, Mrs. Dorothy McClanahan of Route 1, Grundy, Mrs. Marsh (Brenda) Lee of Route 1, Grundy, Mrs. Larry (Betty) Clevinger of Route 1, Grundy; Ms. J.R. (Joann) Duty of Route 1, Grundy, Mrs. Jodi (Lydia) Morris of Route 1, Grundy, Mrs. Richard (Peggy) McClanahan of Hurley, Va., and Mrs. Tim (Patricia) Blue of Florence, S.C.; eight sons, Bailey and his wife Phyllis Thompson of Kemper, Ky., Charles and his wife Clara Thompson of Big Rock, Va., Harold Thompson of Route 1, Grundy, Roger Thompson of Johnson City, Tenn., Jerry and his wife Peggy Thompson of Florence, S.C., Pal and his wife Pam Thompson of Route 1, Grundy, James Thompson of Route 1, Grundy and Danny Ray and his wife, Donna Thompson of Route 1, Grundy; three sisters, Alice Ramey of Portsmouth, Va., Melster Freeman of Georgia, and Ruth Ann Carty of Columbus, Ohio; and two brothers, Edgar Belcher of Columbus and Eugene Belcher of Palatka, Fla. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two special care givers, Olivia Kerr and Bev Colley.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda Faye McCoy on March 10, 1981; and one sister, May Goff.
Funeral services for Margie Belcher Thompson will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church with Ministers E.C. Honaker, Jimmy Kerr, Mike Casey and Jerry Edwards officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
An evening service will be held at the church Friday at 7 p.m.

BLOUNTVILLE - Mr. Sherman Carr, 56, of 138 Mapleview Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Carr was a native of Piney Flats and the son of the late Riley and Viola Baker Carr. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Bobby" Carr. Survivors include one daughter, Vikki Liuni of Blountville; two grandchildren, Scotty Carr and Megan Liuni, both of Blountville; two sisters, Nola Ford of Blountville and Kay Whitt of Gray; four brothers, Bill Carr of Bluff City, Glen Carr and Gene Carr, both of Bristol, and Lynn "Charlie" Carr of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
