Lillie Rosetta Gentry
Lillie Rosetta Gentry, 88, of Bristol, Tennessee, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in Bluff City, a daughter of the late Eli Gentry of Carter County, Tenn., and Ema Girtman Gentry of North Carolina, and was the widow of Walter D. Gentry. She attended Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her love of the Lord and her family and friends. She was an avid gardener and loved working in her flowers.
Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Johnson of Bristol, Tennessee; two grandsons, Michael Johnson and his wife Pat and Chris Johnson and his wife Joanne; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Johnson and Jessica Johnson; two sisters, Georgia Henson of Houston and Mildred Young of Baltimore; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Dr. Nelson Gwaltney.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Friday morning in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Whitaker and Rev. Bruce DeVoe officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Marqjard, Jack Gross, Tom Woosley, Bob Lesueur, Ron Hall and Ray Matson. MEADOWVIEW - Mr. Henry Stuart Holmes, 74, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Avante of Roanoke.

Rev. Robert C. Holmes
WYTHEVILLE - Rev. Robert C. Holmes, 80, formerly of the Richlands and Rosedale, Va., areas, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Seaboard, Va., and was the son of the late Victor H. and Margaret (Maggie) Lawson Holmes, both Richlands natives.
He had made his home in the Wytheville area for the past four years and was a retired minister/evangelist and co-owner of V.H. Holmes & Sons, Inc. recycling center in Richlands. He attended both the Wytheville and Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness churches and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. His proudest life achievement was working to secure funding for the care of the mentally retarded in their home communities through the Medicaid waiver. He worked tirelessly in the early 1990's writing letters, attending hearings and lobbying the Virginia State House and General Assembly to those ends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Carrie Holmes Helton; and six brothes, L.C., Garfield, Mansfield, Willie, Arvil and Thedford Holmes.
Survivors are: his wife of 50 years, Rebecca Ruth Musick Holmes; two daughters, Ann Bramblett of Norfolk, Va., and Barbara G. Holmes of Wytheville; three sons, Larry C. Holmes of Hillsville, Va., Randall W. Holmes of Hillsville and Danny L. Holmes of Hillsville; one sister, Mary Puckett and husband Walter of Eure, N.C.; one brother, Rev. Alvin Holmes and wife Betty of Richlands; two sisters-in-law, Loyale Epling Holmes of Hampton, Va., and Martha Asbury Holmes of Richlands; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Richlands Tabernacle Church in Richlands with the Rev. Ralph Horton and Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be David Horton, Don Horton, Phillip Horton, Richard Holmes, Otis Musick and Jim Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Max Smith, Mark Smith, Stanley Houchins, Ray Smith, grandsons and nephews. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 DAV will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the United Pentecostal Holiness Church in Richlands and Friday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands and one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday at the Richlands Tabernacle Church. Barbara W. Kaufman
LEBANON - Barbara "Sandy" Watkins Kaufman died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at her home in Greenwich, Conn.
She was born Nov. 15, 1955, in Lebanon to John Custer and Virginia Watkins. She attended Russell County pubic schools and Longwood College. She received a B.S. in pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia and, in December 2001, a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Arkansas. She was a clinical pharmacist at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weil Cornell Medical Center in White Plains, N. Y.
Mrs. Kaufman was preceded in death by brother, John Watkins in 1970, and her father, John Custer Watkins in 1982.
Survivors include her husband, James Kaufman, Greenwich; mother, Virginia Watkins of Lebanon; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bert West, Austin, Texas; niece, Maddie Kate Kaufman, New York City; and first cousin, Homer B. Ellis Jr., Bristol, Virginia.
A memorial service will be conducted at noon Saturday, June 8, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Mike Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Russell Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. CLINCHCO, Va. - Funeral servcies for Elsie Vera Long will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Martins Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with clergymen Finas Hill and Avery Carty officiating. Burial will be in the Long Family Cemetery, Route 1, Nora.

Elene Ray Phillips
HONAKER - Mrs. Elene Ray Phillips, 68, of 740 Lcust St., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in a Lebanon hosptial. Born Feb. 5, 1934, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Martha Barton Ray of Davenport, Va. She had resided in Honaker for the past 33 years and was formerly employed as a cook at Food City and Russell Foods. She was a member of the Little Garden Pentecostal Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Lloyd A. Lockhart and Bradley F. Lockhart.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Phillips of the home; three daughters, Brenda Phillips of Abingdon, Gaynell Wilson of Council, Va., and Violet Presley of Lebanon; three sons, Lonnie Lockhart of Davenport, Ralph (Bo) Phillips of Bristol, Tennessee, and Tim Phillips of Honaker; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell Ray of Abingdon, Lester Ray of Davenport and Sonny Ray of Stanford, Va.; two sisters, Zada Breeding and Lorrine Rasnake, both of Davenport; her mother-in-law, Thelma Mann of Honaker; special daughter-in-law, Kim Phillips; and very special friend, Chris Boyd.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Andrew Presley officiating. Interment will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens at Norton.
Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Sylvia P. Roller
Sylvia Pearl Roller, 68, of Deck Valley Road, Bristol, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in the Wellmont Hospice House after a period of declining health.
Sylvia was born Aug. 6, 1933, in Scott County, Va., a daughter of the late Robert and Martha Huffman Whitaker. On Jan. 4, 1952, she married Charles M. Roller. She was a former employee of the Bristol Lingerie, Nickels Manufacturing Company and Central Heights School. She was a member of the Deck Valley Independent Baptist Church.
Sylvia is survived by her husband of 50 years, Charles M. Roller of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Vernon R. Moore of Bristol, Mickie and Ronnie McClain of Blountville, and Valeria and Chris Arnold of Bristol, two sons and daughter-in-law; Bobby and June Roller of Blountville, Randall and Jan Roller of Bristol; six grandsons; one granddaughter; and one great-grandchild; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Garland Whitaker of Alabama, Charles and Juanita Whitaker, Herbert (Hub) and Jessie Whitaker and Bobby Scott and Martha Whitaker, all of Blountville.
Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the East Lawn Funeral Home and any time at the home of daughter, Kathy Moore. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Malcolm Shelton, Brother Fred Robinette and Brother Randall Roller officiating. Burial and graveside service will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of the Everlasting Life III. Hazel J. Snyder
MOUNTAIN CITY - Mrs. Hazel Josephine Snyder, 86, of 468 Moretz Road, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in the Mountain City Care Center. She was a native of Watauga County, N.C., a daughter of the late Stillman and Lula Thomas Snyder. Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her husband, Ferd Ellis Snyder; and by a son, Carl Snyder. She was a housewife and a member of the Mountain City Church of Christ.
Survivors are one son, Clifton Cress Snyder, Mountain City; two sisters, Cleo Baird, Johnson City and Edna Haga, Bristol, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002, from the chapel of the Henson Funeral Home with Mr. Darrell Broking officiating. Pallbearers will be Gary Cook, Don Haga, Jim Reece, Bud McComas, Bill Taylor, Mike Taylor and Joe Gwinn.
Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Snyder Family Cemetery.

DORAN BOTTOM, Va. - Mr. Dewey F. Taylor, 80, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.

Damon C. Whited
RICHLANDS - Mr. Damon Crockett Whited, 75, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in a Kingsport hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Charlie and Jeanette Cordle Whited. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local 1640.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Pansy Phillips and Exie Baldwin; and two brothers, Clarence Whited and Howard Whited.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Rita Wyatt Whited; four sons, Wayne Whited of Chicago, Dean Whited of Belfast, Va., Keith Whited of Richlands and Timothy Whited of the home; one daughter, Amanda Whited of the home; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Alfred Whited of Richlands and Ballard Whited and Hurley Whited, both of Raven,Va.; and one sister, Shelvie Phillips of Mt. Vernon, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002, with Rev. Carl Ball and Pastor Buddy Hearld officiating. Burial will follow in Hankins Cemetery at Richlands. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V.

Giles D. Wise
CASTLEWOOD - Giles D. Wise, 83, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Russell County,Va., the son of the late Conley G. and Golden A. Wise. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Air Force. He was a retired miner and member of the U.M.W.A. Mr. Wise was preceded in death by his first wife, Lenora Amburgey Wise; and two sisters, Beulah Smith and Barbara Ring. He was a member of the Banner Assembly of God.
He is survived by his wife, Audry Wise of Castlewood; three daughters, Kay Carico and husband Douglas of Kingsport, Ginger Saylor and husband Donnie or Russellville, Ala., and Janice Eldridge of Hampton,Va.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Woody of Coeburn and Shirley Hileman and husband Blaine of St. Paul; three stepsons, Thomas Woody of Wise, James G. Woody and wife Sandra of Castlewood and Terry Woody and wife Judy of Bluefield, W.Va.; one sister, Bonnie Hurd of Lebanon; one brother, Carson Wise of St. Paul, Va.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with the Rev. Glenn Hammacker officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Pallbearers will be George Jordan, Miles Sutherland, Junior Harvey, Terry Fields, Larry Minton and Bill Blevins. Military graveside services will be conducted by Clintwood DAV Chapter 35, VFW Post 8979 and American Legion Post 227 in the Peuther Chapel Cemetery, Caney Ridge Section, Clintwood.
Pallbearers will be Richard D. Yates, Richard S. Yates, Dwayne Yates, Charles Beare, Matthew Beare, Shane Hensley and Sam Edmunds. Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Mullins, Cecil Hensley, Henry Yates, James Yates and Fred Yates Jr.
Mr. Yates, 82, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife of 60 years by his side and entered into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 4, 2002.

RICHLANDS - Mrs. Mary Louise Ball, 76, of 2325 South Farmer St., passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Richlands and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Cordle, both Tazewell County natives. She had made her home in the Richlands area all of her life and was a member of the New Hope Assembly Church in Claypool Hill, Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junior A. Ball; and several sisters and brothers. Survivors are: three sons, Mr. Bill Thomas Ball and wife Deborah of Holly Springs, N.C., Mr. James Harold Ball and wife Sherry of Richlands and Mr. Bobby Ray Ball and wife Susan of Lebanon; one sister, Mrs. Josephine Reynolds of Richlands; one grandson, Mr. Timothy Ball; and special care givers, Jane Musick, Tonya Horn, Jamie Anders and Sabrina Ball.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Claudie Throgmartin and Rev. Rick Cole officiating. BUFORD, Ga. - Cora Lee Casteel, 84, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002. A native of Sullivan County, Tenn., she was a former member of the Bethel View Baptist Church of Bristol Tennessee, and a member of the Victory Baptist Church, Lawrenceville. She was a retired waitress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Luther Casteel; and parents, William and Amanda Hampton Eaton.
She is survived by two sons, Herman L. Casteel, Phenix City, Ala., and Fred Casteel, Buford; twin brother, Roy Eaton, Blountville; and eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leon Mullinax officiating. Burial will follow in the East Lawn Cemetery. BIG STONE GAP - Cecil M. Dickenson, 86, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap. He was a life long resident of the area and a farmer most of his life. Surviving are nephews, Terry Dickenson, Big Stone Gap, Steven Dickenson, Big Stone Gap, Fred Roach, Norton and Dale Roach, Bethlehem, Pa.; great-nephew, David Dickenson, Big Stone Gap; great-nieces, Linda Vaughn, Big Stone Gap and Teresa McGuire, Kingsport; great-great-nieces, Jessica Swihart, Radford and Sherry Lawson, Blountville; great-great-nephew, Dannon Swihart, Radford; and sister, Grace Roach, Big Stone Gap.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lafayette and Oma Dickenson; and two brothers, Junior Dickenson and Alfred Dickenson. Visitation will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Gilliam Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the funeral home with Rev. Walter Begley and Rev. Dewey Dickenson officiating. Graveside services will be held at Dickenson Family Cemetery in Maples Gap on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Ruth Elkins
Anna Ruth Dutton Elkins, 56, of Bristol Virginia, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at her home. She was a life long resident of Bristol, the daughter of the late Raymond Howard Dutton and Mamie Fay Friesland Dutton, and was the widow of Daniel Dale Elkins. She was an employee of Bristol Bag Company.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Crowe and Jennifer Darlington, both of Bristol Tennessee; a grandson, Rocky Allen Phillips II; a step-granddaughter, Stormie Dawn Crowe.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery with Rev. Dub Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Tuesday evening at Blevins Funeral Home. Arrangements especially for Mrs. Elkins have been made through Blevins Funeral Home, 417 Lee St., Bristol, Va.
