Robert Howard Rodefer
BLUFF CITY - Robert Howard "Rawhide" Rodefer, 69, went to eternal rest on Monday, July 29, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Rodefer was born March 5, 1933, a son of the late Herman Rodefer and Nettie Mae Salyers Rodefer. A native of Blountville, Mr. Rodefer was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Bowman Rodefer. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired school bus driver and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. Through his military service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the UN Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Combat Medical Badge. Mr. Rodefer was a member of Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975.
Survivors include: wife, Ruth Mills Rodefer of the home; two daughters, Mary Evelyn Rosson of Tolono, Ill., and Robin Tester and husband Allen of Bluff City; two sons, Robert H. Rodefer Jr. and wife Linda of Bristol Tennessee, and Mark D. Rodefer of Bristol Virginia; several stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandsons, Sidney and Jerry; five sisters, Edith Benfield, Jonesborough, Tenn., Ruth Minnick, Bristol Tennessee, Florie Fleenor, Blountville, Elsie Shaffer, Festus, Mo., and Wanda Griffin, Nashville, N.C.; one brother, Herman Ray Rodefer, Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Barr officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the service. Committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002, with Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 providing military rites. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Hicks, Ed Buchanan and Paul Pickle.

The funeral service for James Edwin Fey Rogers will be conducted at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Fred Dearing officiating. Minnie Hines Sexton
ELK CREEK, Va. - Minnie Hines Sexton, 91, of Hines Branch Road, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Cambridge House Nursing Home, Bristol Tennessee.
She was born Feb. 18, 1911, in Grayson County, Va., the Spring Valley community, to the late Charlie B. and Minnie Jones Hines. She was the widow of Sam M. Sexton. She and her husband lived in the Hines Branch Community most of their lives. Mrs. Sexton was a housewife and mother. The past two years she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Bristol Tennessee.
Mrs. Sexton was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving: two daughters, Martha Carrico and husband Bill, Bristol Tennessee, and Alta Hackler, Ackworth, Ga.; one sister, Opal Catron, Salem, Va.; three grandsons, Ron Carrico and wife Christine, Bristol Tennessee, Roger Hackler and wife Kimberly, Marietta, Ga., and Randy Hackler and wife Sandy, Marietta; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Elswick.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 8 p.m. in the Reins-Studivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the service. Rev. Fred E. Jennings and Rev. Roy Taylor officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hines Branch Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ron Carrico, Roger Hackler, Randy Hackler, Mike Carrico, nephew, Tommy Molloy and special friend, Jeff Hines.

Joseph B. Vanover Sr.
WISE - Joseph B. Vanover Sr., 78, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Norton Community Hospital, Norton.
He was a retired coal miner, a former employee of Norton Coal Co., a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Alta Vanover; a brother, Ray Vanover; and his parents, Sullivan and Cosby Belcher Vanover.
Surviving are one son, Joseph B. Vanover Jr. of Wise; one daughter, Betty Edington of Hagersville, Canada; three brothers, Bob Vanover and Jack Vanover, both of Wise, and Curtis Vanover of Kingsport; and three sisters, Trula Hansley of Indianapolis, Gay Hall of Marion, Ind., and Norma Jean Stanley of California.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with Rev. Gene Jennings officiating. Burial will follow in the Wise Cemetery, Wise. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.

Edgar M. Davis, 82, 1107 Hill St., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, July 15, 2002, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Saltville, Va., and son of the late J.B. Davis and Mary Hamby Davis. He was a member of Temple Freewill Baptist Church and a retired self-employed TV technician. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet Nora Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Sprinkle Davis, Bristol Tennessee; stepson, Leon F. Sprinkle Jr., Richmond; stepdaughter, Frances Crumley, Bristol Tennessee; stepson, William Malcolm Sprinkle, Abingdon; stepson, Ed Davis, Waco, Texas; and nephews, David Lee of Florida, and Daniel Lee, Bristol Tennessee.

Donald Finney
JEFFERSON, N.C. - Mr. Donald "Don" Gordon Finney, 62, 245 Knollview Drive, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Finney resided in Jefferson and was a native of Bluff City and Vero Beach, Fla.
Mr. Finney was a retired employee of Ashe County, N.C., and of the Indian River County Highway Department of Florida. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Finney was born on Nov. 20, 1939, in New Jersey, and was the son of Irene N. Finney and the late Ira J.F inney.
Survivors include his loving wife, Joyce Poe Finney; former wife, friend and mother of his children, Linda K. Massengill Finney; one son, Donald G. Finney II, Mobile, Ala.; one stepson, Josh Poe, Jefferson; three daughters, Laura K. Williams, Gray Station and Leeann M. Finney, Bluff City, both from Tennessee, and Lynnise R. Jajo, Gulfport, Miss.; one stepdaughter, Amanda Poe, Jefferson; one brother, Robert S. Finney, Cocoa Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one niece.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel in Jefferson. Rev. Keith Casey and Rev. Wayne Osborne officiated. Burial followed in the Bald Mountain Cemetery. The family received friends Friday, July 12, from 6-8 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home.

Frances Montgomery
Pauline Frances Cullop Montgomery, 61, of 1711 1/2 Georgia Ave., Bristol, Tenn., passed away July 16, 2002, at Bristol Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late William S. and Sue Cullop. She was a homemaker and was a native of Washington County, Va.
Survivors include: husband, H. Wayne Montgomery; daughter, Betty Ann Morton of Bristol Tennessee; grandchildren, Jessica Morton and Steven Morton, both of Bristol Tennessee; great-grandson, Logan Joseph Mabe; sister, Mary Alice Wimmer of Bristol Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

HURLEY, N.Y. - Mary H. Pepper, 74, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at her home.
She was a member of the Hurley Reformed Church, Junior League of Kingston, Ladies Auxiliary of the Hudson Valley Senior Residence, Little Gardens of Kingston and the Wiltwyck Golf Club.
Born in Bristol Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late O.D. and Bertha J. Lewis Hamrick.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Sam S. Pepper Sr.; a son, Sam Jr. of Maple Grove, Minn.; two daughters, Julia Webber of Endicott and Mary Frances Sass of Kingston; two brothers, John Hamrick of Lyme, Conn., and James Hamrick of Little River, S.C.; a sister, Emma Shipley of Bristol Virginia; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held Friday in Hurley.

MARION - Fred L. Shaffer, 56, died Monday, July 15, 2002, in Fairmont, W.Va.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Philippi, W.Va., to the late Edward Lee and Louise Geraldine Moyer Shaffer, and was preceded in death by one son, Freddie Lee Shaffer Jr. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with over 20 years of service. He attained the rank of chief petty officer and served in Vietnam. He received a bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University and a business degree in Syracuse, N.Y. Mr. Shaffer was employed as an analyst for the FBI in Clarksburg, W.Va.
Survivors include: wife, Patricia Hall Shaffer; one daughter and son-in-law, Cassandra and David Ellard, Escondido, Calif.; one stepson, Joseph Mabe, White Top, Va.; two stepdaughters, Teresa and Russell Wilson, San Marcos, Calif., and Chrissy Stolworthy, Lakeside, Ariz.; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Clarke Nicol, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; one grandson, Jacob Ellard; and one step-grandson, Joseph Darrell Mabe.

Lois Baker Smith, 69, 4256 Old Jonesboro Road, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Clinchco, Va., and had lived in Lebanon most of her life until moving to the Bristol area four years ago. She was a retired employee of Bank of Virginia and a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Carl L. Smith; two daughters, Denise Hardin of Kingsport and Cynthia Herrell of Abingdon; one son, James Brian Smith of Tijeras, N.M.; one sister, June Simpson of Maryland; four brothers, John Baker and James Baker, both of Maryland, David Baker of Missouri and George Baker of Illinois; two grandchildren, Michelle Harris and Matthew Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2002, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Meade officiating. SALTVILLE - Ms. Lois R. "Flossie" Stallard, 70, born June 7, 1932, passed away July 15, 2002. She was the widow of George W. Stallard and the daughter of Susie and Jake Rhea. She attended Midway Memorial Chapel.
Survivors: two sons, Joe Stallard, Saltville and Doug Stallard, Abingdon; two daughters, Kathy Bordwine, Meadowview, Va., and Carolyn Thomas, Saltville; one brother, Lewis William Rhea, Rock Falls, Ill.; three sisters, Hazel McGhee and Tootsie Stroupe, Saltville and Helen Parris, Marion; eight grandchildren, Scotty Stallard, Shannon Williams, David Alan Williams, Lee Ann Bordwine, Robbie Stallard, Michael Stallard, Renee Henegar and Donnie Thomas; and six great-grandchildren.

Hunter H. Thayer Jr.
ABINGDON - Hunter Hershel "Chip" Thayer Jr., 40, died Monday, July 15, 2002. He was employed as the general sales manager of Wallace Volkswagen-Subaru-Oldsmobile in Bristol. He was the former sales manager of Bill Gatton Nissan also in Bristol. He was preceded in death by his father, Hunter Hershel Thayer Sr.
Chip was a 1980 graduate of Abingdon High School where he was an avid participant in sports and had served as the starting quarterback for the football team. He continued his athletic career at Emory & Henry College where he also served as quarterback for the Wasps football team and as an assistant coach in 1985. He graduate from Emory & Henry College with a bachelor's degree. Upon his graduation from college he served as an assistant coach at Powell Valley High School in Big Stone Gap, Va., in 1986-1988. Chip was involved with and had served as assistant coach with the Highlands Youth Soccer League. He was a sportsman with a great love for golf.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly King Thayer; a son, Hunter H. Thayer III; a daughter, Madison Nicole Thayer; his mother, Sue Taylor Thayer of Abingdon; sisters, Melinda Thayer Leland and husband David of Abingdon;, Jackie Thayer Craft and husband Chad of Glade Spring; nieces and nephews, Taylor Leland, Haven Leland, Macie Leland, Coy Craft, Bailey Craft, Shelby Craft and Duane King Jr.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2002, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jimmie Davidson officiating. The burial and interment service will be private. Casketbearers will be Chad Craft, David Leland, Bobby Taylor, Jack Blevins, Bob Maiden and Danny Foster. Honorary casketbearers will be Tracy Bratton, Roy Mullins and Fred Selfe. GRAY, Tenn. - Mrs. Dorothy Strickler Thomas, 387 Oak Grove Road, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Thomas was a native of Sullivan County and the daughter of the late Earl and Susie Strickler. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Thomas; daughter, Pamela Ann; two sisters, Emma Jean Dye and Eleanor Knight.
Survivors: son, Rodney Thomas; sisters, Marie Irvin and Betty Applegate; brothers, Jasper W. Strickler and Robert E. Strickler; four grandsons; and two granddaughters.

Cynthia L. Thompson
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - Cynthia Louise (Cindy) Thompson, 45, passed Friday, July 22, 2002, in the Douglasville Medical Center.
Born March 8, 1957, in Dante, Va., she had lived in Lebanon moving to Newark, N.J. at the age of four. She was a retired U.S. Army first sergeant with more than 22 years of service. After her retirement she had lived in Southfield, Mich. She was a member of the Live Oak Church of God in Hinesville, Ga.
Survivors include her husband, G.W. Thompson, Southfield, Mich.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Edward J. Walters and wife Teresa Walters and Elijah J. Walters, all of Suwanee, Ga.; one daughter, Camille S. Walters, Suwanee; grandson, Edward J. Walters Jr., Suwanee; mother, Jessie Burrell Leeper and husband, Rev. Rayburn Leeper, Kingsport; father, Robert Hale and wife Janet Hale, Douglasville; grandfather, Rev. Jasper Burrell, Lebanon; brother, Robert Burrell-Hale Jr., Winston, Ga.; half-sister, Michelle Hale, Boston; 11 aunts; 12 uncles; three nieces; and two nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. James M. Cowart, Dr. James Belcher, Dr. Anthony H. Daniels, Dr. W.A. Johnson and the Rev. Herbert W. Scott officiating. Music will be provided by Richard Lomax and the men's choir. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon with full military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Fort Lee Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be: Frederick Burrell, Franklyn Burrell, William Burrell, Leon Talford, Calvin Talford, Joe Jones, Corey Sales and Kedrick Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be: Benjamin Burrell, Albert Hale, Roy Hayes, William Roosevelt Talford, Donald Wayne Talford, Damon "Buddy" Hale, Carl Hale and Lawrence Hale. Cousins will serve as flower girls. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the funeral home.
