Mildred S. Coleman
RIDGEWAY, Va. - Mildred "Mickie" Slate Coleman, 73, passed away on July 27, 2002, after an extended illness. She was born in Patrick County, Va., on Nov. 7, 1928, to the late Murray and Etta Anderson Slate. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.R. "Jack" Coleman; her brother, Burton Slate, Claudville, Va.; and a sister, Eleanor Blackburn, Eden, N.C.
She will be greatly missed by daughter, Marty English (Bill) of Lexington, Ky.; and sons, Ken M. Coleman, Don C. Coleman (Dana), John W. Coleman (Tina), all of Richmond, and Tim A. Coleman (Susan) of Lebanon. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; her brother, Harold Slate of Stuart, Va.; and a sister, Katie Spears of Ridgeway.
Mickie was a loving mother, grandmother, teacher, friend and caregiver. Her love for others was demonstrated throughout her lifetime of serving through foster parenting, teaching, nursing and activities at Morgan Ford Christian Church. Even though she will be missed, her family rejoices in the fact that her lifetime of service to others will now be eternally rewarded.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Martinsville, Va. The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, July 30.

Thaddeus L. Conley
WISE - Thaddeus Lyle Conley, 46, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax, Va.
He attended Clifton Elementary, Clifton, Va., Robinson High, Fairfax, Va.; Northern Virginia Community College and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His studies included Marine technology at the College of Oceaneering, Los Angeles, Calif., engineering technology at Pacific Western University, and commercial diving at the Ocean Corporation, Houston, Texas. He was certified as a structural inspector by the Washington Area Council of Engineering Laboratories, was former member of American Welding Society, Professional Erectors Association and American Society for Nondestructive Testing. He was former teacher of surface and underwater burning and welding at the Ocean Corporation and The College of Oceaneering. His hobbies included parachuting, scuba diving of which he once was an instructor, hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Conley.
Surviving are one daughter, Vincy Conley of Fairfax, Va.; his mother, Shelby Conley of Clifton, Va.; three brothers, Dean Conley of Waterford, Va., Kenneth Conley of Culpeper, Va., and Sam Conley of Manassas, Va.; two sisters, Tena Lister of Dale City, Va., and DeeDee Brannon of Edinburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with Rev. Gene Conley officiating. Burial will following the Crabtree Cemetery, Wise. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.

William B. Elkins
COEBURN - William Bradley "Brad" Elkins, 19, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the Norton Community Hospital, Norton, Va. He was a 2001 graduate of Coeburn High School, attended the University of Virginia College at Wise, active in the Trail of the Lonesome Pine and a member of the Community Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Cindy and Jason Kelly of Coeburn; his father and stepmother, Frank and Lisa Elkins of Dean, Ky.; a brother, Jake Elkins of the home; his paternal grandmother, Peggy Elkins of Clintwood, Va.; his maternal grandparents, Gene and June Sands of Coeburn; his maternal great-grandmother, Annette Kennedy of Coeburn; several cousins, aunts, uncles and special friends. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Coeburn, with Pastor Wayne Perry officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Coeburn. James Carl Green
James Carl "Jay" Green, 58, passed away on Jan. 26, 2002. His passing was the result of a sudden heart attack.
Jay was the beloved son of the late James M. and Lura C. Green of Piney Flats, Tenn.
He was the beloved father of Kelly R. Green and Stacy R. Fennimore of Wilmington, Del.; and his granddaughter, Adelayne, with whom he spent one short week, especially misses him.
To honor Jay's life, a memorial service will be held on Aug. 1, 2002, at noon. This date is significant to the family as Jay's parents each passed on Aug. 1, five years apart.

VALE, N.C. - Tyler Bryan Kincer, infant son of Teddy Ray Kincer Jr. and Amanda Rachel Keen, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002, in Catawaba Memorial Hospital, Hickory, N.C., following a short illness.
The infant is survived by his parents, Teddy Ray Kincer and Amanda Rachel Keen, Vale; twin brother, Taylor Ryan Kincer, Vale; one half-brother, Alex Kincer, Newton, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Judy Coleman Keen, Oakwood, Va.; maternal great-grandmother, Melda Coleman, Honaker; paternal grandparents, Teddy Ray and Castella Kincer, Pasedena, Md.; paternal great-grandfather, Keith Kincer, Lynch, Ky.; seven aunts; eight uncles; and 16 cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Little Martha Old Regular Baptist Church, Leemaster, Va., with Elders Mark Justice, Howard Daniels, Roger Coleman, Eddie Newsome, Jerry Newsome, David OQuinn, Freddy Ramey, Freelin Yates, Frank OQuinn and Aven Viers officiating with burial to follow in Esau Rife Cemetery on Keen Mountain, near Oakwood.

Irvin A. Lamy
Irving A. Lamy of Bristol Tennessee, went to be with his Lord Monday, July 29, 2002, at Indian Path Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Watertown, Conn., and was a retired employee of Anaconda American Brass, Waterbury, Conn. Mr. Lamy (Pepere) had resided in Bristol Tennessee, for the past six years and was a member of Vance Bible Church. He previously resided in Raleigh, N.C., Norfolk, Conn., and Watertown.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Cecile; one sister, Sister Rita Lamy of West Hartford, Conn.; four sons, Richard of Raleigh, N.C., Ronald of High Point, N.C., Marcel of Ferrum, Va., and Kevin of Kensington, Conn.; two daughters, Lorraine Langlais of Thomaston, Conn., and Denise Hitefield of Bristol Tennessee; and 19 grandchildren.
A memorial fellowship will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Vance Bible Church, Broyles Lane, Bristol, Tenn. Because of Irving's great love for children, in lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the following school scholarship fund for needy children: Tri-Cities Christian School, 2031 Broad St., Bristol, TN 37620, Attn: Lisa Layell (Pepere Lamy Scholarship Fund).

GLADE SPRING, Va. - The funeral service for Mrs. Elizabeth Viola Lester will be conducted Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Old Glade Presbyterian Church with Reverend Timothy Bird officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Allen Kelly, Butch Lester, Randy Lester, Tammy Lester Walton, Jason Lester, Jake Lester, Jonathan Kelly, Dan Donnelly and Jimmy Parks.

William S. Lowe Sr.
CEDAR BLUFF - Mr. William Stuart (Bill) Lowe Sr., 59, passed away Monday, July 29, 2002, in a Kingsport hospital. Born July 18, 1943, in Virginia, he was a son of the late Aaron Columbus and Effie Lou Davis Lowe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Matthew Lowe.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Rose Hess Reynolds Lowe of the home; three sons, James William Lowe of Richlands, William Stuart Lowe Jr. and his wife, Crystal of Cedar Bluff and Tommy Wayne Lowe of Bland, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Willie (Janet) Lester, Mrs. Christopher (Tina) Shortt and Mrs. Charles (Crystal) Neal, all of Cedar Bluff; five stepsons, Jacob Kelly Reynolds of the home, Curtis Eugene Lowe of North Carolina, Harvey Lynn Reynolds and his wife, Connie and Matthew Douglas Reynolds, both of Cedar Bluff, Samuel Wayne Reynolds and his wife, Donna of Brumley Gap, Va.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Greg (Lisa) Hess of Richlands and Mrs. James (Mavis) Foster of Cedar Bluff; one brother and sister-in-law, Roger Dale Lowe Sr. and Ruthie Mae Pruitt Lowe of Richlands; four sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Phyllis) Goss and Mrs. Billy (Maxine) Lowe, both of Richlands, Mrs. Eugene (Helen) Jeter of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Ronnie (Teresa) Hill of Swords Creek, Va.; and 27 grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Audie Allen, Brother Bill Fletcher and Rev. Darrell Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in the Reynolds Cemetery on Kents Ridge near Swords Creek, Va.
Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.

GRUNDY - Mary Alice Mullins, 54 years of age, of the Slate Creek section, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in Tazewell, Va.

Jack Odle
NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Jack W. Odle, 79, departed this life early Monday at this residence. He was a native of Scott County (Nickelsville) and was a farmer. He was Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 49th Masonic District of Virginia. He was member of Fidelity Lodge 173 of Nickelsville and Stuart Lodge 224 of Lebanon where he served as Past Master. He was a member of Nickelsville United Methodist Church and served as a member of the church administrative board. He was employed by the Scott County School System as a bus driver for 31 years before his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Odle and Emma Hartsock Odle; and a sister, Faye Cain Burleson.
He is survived by wife of 60 years, Clara Rose Tiller Odle, Nickelsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Odle and wife Linda Odle, Nickelsville and Rev. George Edwin Odle and wife Diana Odle, Johnson City; grandchildren, Anthony Odle and wife Karen Odle, Nickelsville and Carla Begley, Kingsport; great-grandchildren, Christopher Odle and Spencer Begley; sisters, Lou and husband Charles Richards, Kingsport and Peggy and husband Ralph Musick, Vivian, La.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick Odle and wife Velma, Nickelsville and Don Odle and wife Nancy, Nickelsville.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nickelsville United Methodist Church. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be at at 8 p.m. with Rev. Joe Barber, Rev. Millard Johnson and Rev. Steve Collins officiating with music by the Nickelsville United Methodist Church Choir. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, Va. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.

Bessie Eller Owens
GLADE SPRING - Mrs. Bessie Eller Owens, 91, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. Born in Washington County, she was a daughter of the late Peter Jefferson Eller and Rachel Dolinger Eller. Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Louis Owens.
She was affectionately known as "Granny B" to her many family members, friends and neighbors. Mrs. Owens was a former cafeteria worker at the Glade Spring Elementary School. She was a member and had served as an elder in the Grace Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a son, Jerry Owens and wife Charmie of Emory, Va.; a daughter, Sue Thomas and husband Ed of Glade Spring; three grandchildren, Vickie Mitchell and husband Phillip of Abingdon, Tony Owens and wife Sharon of Castlewood and Sheri Bowman and husband Keith of Glade Spring; three step-grandchildren, Eddie Thomas Jr. and wife Teresa of Glade Spring, Libby Alexander and husband Tommy of Abingdon and Crystal Thomas of Damascus; five great-grandchildren, Leslie Barr, Darius Bowman, Felicia Mitchell, Jason Mitchell and McKayla Mitchell; one step-great-grandchild, Brittany Alexander; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the graveside in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Rev. Tom Sullivan officiating. Casketbearers will be the following family members: Tony Owens, Jason Mitchell, Dayton Owens, Darius Bowman, Keith Bowman and Eddie Thomas Jr. Those attending the funeral service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. The family will receive friends any time at the home of her daughter, Sue Thomas, 331 Mesa Drive, Glade Spring. The infant twins of Troy and Amy Robinson, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Erlanger Medical Center, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Robert Howard Rodefer
BLUFF CITY - Committal services for Robert Howard "Rawhide" Rodefer will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Gunnings Cemetery with Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 providing military rites. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Hicks, Ed Buchanan and Paul Pickle.
Mr. Rodefer, 69, went to eternal rest on Monday, July 29, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Dorothy D. Tanner
KINGSPORT - Mrs. Dorothy Draper Tanner, 95, of 100 Netherland Lane, formerly of Richlands, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in a Kingsport health care center.
She was born in Tip Top, Va., and was a daughter of the late Talbert A. and Woodward Zink Draper.
She was a graduate of Richlands High School in Richlands, Va., and Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va. She had resided in Kingsport since 1948, moving to Asbury Center at Baysmont 18 years ago. In 1955 was employed as a fourth-grade teacher at Johnson Elementary School in Kingsport until her retirement in 1971. She was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church in Kingsport.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tanner was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Mr. John Alexander "Jack" Tanner; three sisters, Evelyn Grainger, Helen Ireson and Nona Ruth Spencer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation.
Survivors are: two daughters and sons-in-law, Alexandra T. Fabick and Harold "Fab" Fabick of Church Hill, Tenn., and Melinda Mullins and C.W. Mullins of Mexico Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Ferd Marshall Turner II and wife Terri Kennon Turner, Kathleen Mullins Busch and John David Mullins; and great-grandchildren, Carolyn Alexandria Turner (Allie), Fred Marshall Turner III (Trey), Katelyn Busch and Patrick Tanner Busch.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Asbury Center at Baysmont in Kingsport with Cathy Clasen, Associate Pastor and Youth Minister at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church officiating. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. Interment will follow in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Weaverly Road Presbyterian Church, 1415 Waverly Road, Kingsport, TN 37664-2520. Keith R. Thompson
Keith Randall "Chip" Thompson, 44, of 103 Holston View Drive, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Wellmont Hospice House. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, an employee with Sperry Uniac Corporation with 10 years of service and then with Food City with 14 years of service. He was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include son, William Scott Thompson, Bristol Tennessee; parents, Buster and Katie Thompson, Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, Ronnie Thompson, Kingsport and Rick Thompson, Bristol Tennessee; sister, Leisa Thompson, Bristol Tennessee; several nephews; one aunt; four uncles; and special friend, Billy Joe Widener, Bristol Tennessee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Niles Kitzmiller officiating. The committal will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Burnette, Billy Joe Widener, Roy Hopkins, David Bishop, Rick Simpson and Jeff Simpson. BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Beulah Cooper Wolfe, 97, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at her home.
She was born in Tennessee, and lived most of her life in Big Stone Gap, Va. She was a member of the Holiness Church of God In Jesus Name in Big Stone Gap.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Cooper, Leonard Rutherford, Frank Fogarty and Otis Wolfe; daughter, Zelma DeBoard; son, Lloyd Cooper; parents, Britt and Mattie (Jones) Blake; five sisters, Effie Falin, Melissa Reece, Eliza Holmes, Myrtle Turner and Cleavie Blake; and one brother, Clarence Blake.
Surviving are four sons, Alvis Cooper of Unicoi, Tenn., Dewey Cooper of New Bremen, Ohio, Velton Cooper of Carters Valley, Tenn., and Walter Cooper of Big Stone Gap.; two daughters, Stella Christian of Appalachia and June Cooper of Big Stone Gap; 26 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren; one stepson; and three stepdaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Holding Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Duke Barker, the Rev. Roscoe Mullins and the Rev. Fred Greear officiating. Burial will follow in American Legion Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. DAVENPORT, Va. - Mr. Russell Ball, age 68, passed away Thursday morning, July 4, 2002, in a Richlands hospital.

She was a native of Wise County, Virginia, and had made her home in Bristol most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Dewey Thomas and Winnie Jane Cross Davidson, and was the widow of Rhonda E. Barker.
Mrs. Barker was a retired employee of Kelly and Green and was a member of Bell-Walsh Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a member of Fellowship Chapel.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean B. DuVal of Lynchburg, Va.; one son, Donald L. Barker of Bristol Virginia; four sisters, Louise Hamilton and Bessie Helbert, both of Bristol Virginia, Ruth Terry of Bristol Tennessee, and Bobbie Belskey of Meridianville, Ala.; three grandsons, Jeremy S. Fleenor, Jeffrey M. Fleenor and Brad Barker; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Fellowship Chapel with the Rev. Scott Price and the Rev. Lester MacKinnon officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Danny King, Larry King, Troy Mumpower, Brian Blaylock, Jerry Roller, Robbie Terry, David Hamilton, Dennis Hamilton and Ralph Helbert. Honorary pallbearer will be Dr. Phillip Claybrook. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Akard Funeral Home. E-mail condolences to the family may be sent at akardfh@peercom.net. Marion Blankenbeckler
JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Marion Harold Blankenbeckler, 79, of 2903 Antioch Road, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Marion H. and Chloe May Blankenbeckler. He was a native of Mountain City, Tenn. He was a retired tool and die maker, having worked throughout the Tri-Cities area. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Sherwood Blankenbeckler and Boyd Blankenbeckler; and one sister, Marie Blankenbeckler Elliott.
Survivors are wife, Frances Gentry Blankenbeckler of the home; daughter, Linda B. Russo of Marion, N.C.; son, Richard H. Blankenbeckler, of Jonesborough, Tenn.; sisters, Ida Wilma "Sue" Henley of Johnson City, Lois Gene Wilson, Bluff City and Frances Collins, Kingman, Ariz.; brother, Loyd Blankenbeckler, Mountain City; granddaughter, Sara Lynne Blankenbeckler of Jonesborough; grandson, Stuart Kaleb Blankenbeckler of Jonesborough; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be any time in the home of Frances Blankenbeckler, 2903 Antioch Road, Johnson City. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in Roselawn Cemetery, Johnson City, with Pastor John Hitchew officiating.
Serving the Marion Harold Blankenbeckler family is Snyder's Funeral Home.
