Johnny Lee Campbell
Johnny Lee Campbell, age 49, of Bristol Tennessee, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in the Northeast Medical Center in Concord, N.C. He was a native of Bristol and lived most of his life in the Bristol area. He was an insurance agent with Western Southern Life Insurance Company. He was an elder and music director at the Christian Fellowship Church.
Survivors include: wife, Laynn Campbell; son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Christy Campbell, Bristol Tennessee; grandmother, Alice Thorner, Lakeland, Fla.; grandfather, Albert Campbell, Greenville, Tenn.; father and mother, Billy Gene and Emma Jean Campbell, Lakeland; brother and sister-in-law, David and Penny Campbell, Charlotte, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Billy Jernigan, Atlanta; several nieces and nephews; and beloved Lilly.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Bruce Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, Va. Pallbearers will be Buddy Lester, Richard Page, Bob Jones, Jim Templin, J.B. Edith C. Carrico
ABINGDON - Mrs. Edith C. Carrico, age 84, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a daughter of the late George W. Campbell and Willie Mitchell Campbell.
Mrs. Carrico was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Shortt, and second husband, Carl Carrico. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church with over 30 years of membership.
She is survived by two sons, Ray Shortt and wife Mary of Kernersville, N.C., and Jack Shortt and wife Ilda of Abingdon; four daughters, Betty Joseph of Naples, Fla., Sylvia Owens and husband Ray of Roanoke, Phyllis Joyner and Ray Smith of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Brenda Sorah and husband James of Bristol Virginia; a brother, John "Jadie" Campbell of Abingdon; three sisters, Edna Roberts of Christiansburg, Va., Polly Self of Wytheville and Lorene Singleton and husband Harlow of Abingdon; a special friend, Irene Booher; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Harry Booher officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Grandsons will serve as casketbearers. In memory of Mrs. Carrico, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN 37620. Nelson Reeds Compton
HONAKER - Mr. Nelson Reeds Compton, age 83, of Route 2, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2002, at his home. Born Aug. 25, 1918, in Virginia, he was a son of the late Nealy M. and Elizabeth Fuller Compton. He was a member of the East Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Compton; six brothers, Carl Compton, Roy Compton, Luther Compton, Eugene Compton, Pearly Compton and Claude Compton; and three sisters, Laura Compton, Lacy Compton Richardson and Brady Compton Massie.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlene Whited Compton of the home; one daughter, Diane Compton Hess and her husband, Jim of Bristol Virginia; one son, Keith Compton and his wife, Casandra of Honaker; two sisters, Mary Compton Keene of Mansfield, Ohio, and Trula Compton Morgan of Honaker; one grandson, Blake Hobbs; three step-grandchildren, Michael Hess, Bethany Hess and Davis Hess also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Robinson and Rev. Clyde Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Ferrell Justice, L.W. Hale, Sherman Harris, Davis McGlothlin and Dr. Jamal Sahouni.
Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker after 6 p.m. Friday.

Jean Woolley Jones
Jean Woolley Jones of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Solvang, Calif. She was born in Hibbing, Minn., a daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Nicholson Woolley, and grew up in Bristol. She was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School, Virginia Intermont College and the University of Tennessee. She was president of Major Development Corporation of Bristol and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis "Pinky" Jones; a daughter, Cindy Jones Kunkel and her husband, Dr. Scott Kunkel of San Diego; two sons, Greg Jones and his fiancee, Dianne Dunbar of Denver and Tom Jones and his wife, Martha Cortes Jones of Fairfax, Va.; and three grandsons, Chris, Corey and Dalton Jones.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Dr. David L. Welch officiating. Burial in Glenwood Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. David R. Russell
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Mr. David R. Russell, age 88, died Thursday, June 27, 2002. He was a native of Lee County, Va., and a graduate of Jonesville High School and Hiawassee College in Madisonville, Tenn. He lived in Abingdon for 38 years from 1960-1998.
He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation following more than 41 years of service.
He was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church where he served for many years as the superintendent of Sunday Schools and served on the Commission of Education and Administrative Board.
He was a former president and lifetime member of the Abingdon Civitan Club. He was a former president of the Abingdon Elementary PTA and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 48 of Abingdon.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gladys Alley Russell; a daughter, Kathy White and her husband Bill; two grandchildren, William and Elizabeth White, all of Midlothian; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bill Rowland and the Reverend Betty Reiff officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon following the service. A Masonic service will be conducted at the graveside by the Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. in the church parlor prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Gary Kelly, Henry Lane, Eddie Skeen, Clifford Hawley, Jim Stanley and Jim White. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter O. Conley, Joe Ely, Carl W. Blevins, Ernest Arnold, Claude McGlothlin and W.J. Campbell.

John Phillip Senter
PHOENIX, Ariz. - A memorial service for John Phillip (Phil) Senter will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Lester Ferguson and the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Senter, 51, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in a Phoenix hospital.

Loey E. Simcox
Loey Edward Simcox, age 85, of 45 Pace Drive, Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord, Thursday, July 4, 2002, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 1, 1916, a son of the late James B. and Mattie M. Tilly Simcox, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was a retired employee of Simco Electric in Piney Flats and a former employee of Monroe Calculating Company. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and was first sergeant with the 80 Training Division Army Reserves in Abingdon. He was a member of the York Masonic Lodge 12 at Maple Grove, Va., and he was a member of the East Bristol Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by sisters, Hattie Dutton and Bertie Baker; and brothers, Dewey Simcox, Fred Simcox, Lonnie Simcox and Cecil Simcox.
Survivors include: wife, Lois C. Worley Simcox; two sons, James "Jim" Bernard Simcox and Jerry Wayne Simcox; two grandchildren, Michael Simcox and Jennifer Simcox; sister, Charmie Graybeal; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dan Birchfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol. Pallbearers will be Daryl Simcox, James Bailey, Jasper Harmon, Daniel Dutton, John Hoffman and Ray Perrigan. Jimmy Allen Worley
Jimmy Allen Worley, age 56, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002. He was a former resident of Midway Road, Bristol Tennessee. He was born Dec. 1, 1945, a son of the late Eugene and Clayetta Jean Patrick Worley, and a lifelong resident of the Bristol area.
He is survived by his children, Tammy Clark, Tabatha Morgan, Tim Worley and Tommy Worley; his brothers, Gene Worley Jr. and Rick Worley; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Friday, July 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow in the County Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service on Friday.

Arvil Bruce Baker
POUND - Arvil Bruce Baker, 77, passed away Friday, July 19, 2002, in Bon Secour's St. Mary's Hospital, Norton. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America District 28. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mance and Lou Emma Vanover Baker.
Surviving are his spouse, Vernade Bush Baker of Pound; daughter Piney Baker of Pound; sons Robert Baker of Selma, Ala., Larry Baker of Pound and Dean Baker of Pound; sister Effie Dean Baker of Pound; brothers James Baker of Pound and Buster Baker of Pound; a host of friends and loved ones; and six grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 5-9 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, in Baker Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel, Baker Funeral Home with Evangelist Jack Goff and Evangelist Tim Shepard officiating. POUND - Dorsey M. Baker, 88, died July 19, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee.
Mrs. Baker was of the Freewill Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lexie Baker; six brothers; two sisters; her parents, Anderville Baker and her mother, Velma Davis Baker; and her stepmother, Sadie Baker.
Surviving are daughters Velma Jane Olinger of Pound and Deborah Baker of Pound; son, Lexie Wayne Baker of Roanoke, Ala.; sisters Maude Ann Mullins of Wise and June Mullins of Pound; brothers Clay Baker of Pound, Arnold Baker of Pound, John Woody Baker of Knoxville and Jerry Baker of Pound; a host of friends and loved ones; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, at Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel of Baker Funeral Home, Pound, with Rev. Terry Davis officiating. Burial will be in Baker Cemetery, Pound. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

George Boothe Sr.
MARION - George E. Boothe Sr., 52, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at home. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Boothe is survived by his wife, Roxanna Boothe of Marion; two daughters, Rebecca Tidwell and husband, Daniel, of Rural Retreat and Paula Bostic of Marion; one son, George E. Boothe Jr. and wife, Penny, of Anderson, S.C.; three sisters, Frances Nora Bowman of Marion and Opal A. Sims and Hazel Boothe-Brown, both of Powhatan, Va.; one brother, Charlie Alvin Boothe of Charleston, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Alex Snyder, Jordan Jones and Trevor Tidwell; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 21, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery, Lebanon.
