ABINGDON - Gregory Pete Stanley, 45, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at home. He was a native of Dante, Va., and had lived in Manassas for 20 years before moving to Abingdon 17 years ago.
He is survived by:his wife, Stacey Stanley; two sons, Aaron Stanley and Justin Stanley, both of Abingdon; one daughter, Jessica Stanley of Abingdon; his parents, Jimmie C. and Lorraine Stanley of Abingdon; two brothers, Rodney Stanley of Abingdon and Robert Stanley of Manassas; one sister, Christina Vella of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday, July 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Bufford officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday night at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Honorary pallbearer will be Greg Alderman.

Douglas Tillison
BLOUNTVILLE - Douglas Tillison, 85, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Tillison was a native of Washington County, Va., but had lived in the Blountville area for the past 30 years. He was a retired truck driver with Associated Transport and also a retired Sullivan County reserve deputy and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by one son, Jack Tillison, and was a member of East End Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Tillison; one daughter, Jane Simpson of Bristol Tennessee; one son, Ronald Carrier of Bristol Tennessee; and one brother, Carl Tillison of Detroit. Also surviving are three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including one special niece, Hazel Roe of Bristol Tennessee.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at MountainView Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Scott Watson officiating with interment to follow the service.

SENECA, S.C. - Mrs. Willie Ceil Vance Boy, 88, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility, Seneca.
Mrs. Boy was a native of Bluff City and a member of Holston Baptist Church in Bluff City. Mrs. Boy was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Earl Boy; parents ,Dudley and Judy Margaret McKinney Vance; brothers Fred, Bruce, Sam and Edward Vance; and sisters Leona Hatcher, Gladys Holt, Susie Feathers and Mary Pullen.
Survivors include two daughters, Imogene Davis of Simpsonville, S.C., and Peggy Gray of Westminster, S.C.; and three sons, Jimmy Boy of Steinhatchee, Fla., Herbie Boy of Bristol Tennessee, and Doug Boy of Westminster. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in Weaver Cemetery with Mr. Fred Vance officiating. Winfred Lee Deskins
HONAKER - Mr. Winfred Lee Deskins, 80, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, in a Richlands hospital. Born Nov. 4, 1921, in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Charles Perry and Sarah Short Deskins. He had spent most of his life in the area and was a World War II Army veteran, having served in Germany. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed at Koch Raven Coal Co. and was a member of Duty Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Emily Deskins; one daughter, Lisa Jane Deskins; three sisters, Agnes Deskins, Lorine Deskins and Myrtle Langley; and four brothers, Leonard Deskins, Ellis Deskins, Jay Deskins and Delles Deskins.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sammy and Audrey Deskins of Honaker; one granddaughter, Tessa Brooke Deskins of Honaker; and two brothers, Charles Perry Deskins Jr. of Honaker and Billy Joe Deskins of Drill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Don Sullivan, Rev. Wayne Harrison and Rev. Giles Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Jackson Cemetery at Honaker.
Pallbearers will be his nephews and Carey Lee Hale, Mike Osborne and Larry Fuller.

Geneva M. Gobble
Geneva Mumpower Gobble, a resident of Bristol Nursing Home, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Lelia Vance Mumpower and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She had served as a caregiver, sitting with people who were ill, for many years and was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernie W. Ryan; her second husband, William J. Gobble; and a brother, Glen Franklin Mumpower.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenna Ryan McCroskey of Manchester, Tenn.; sons James "J.D." Ryan of Bristol Virginia, and Dale E. Ryan of Bluff City; brothers Gilmer W. Mumpower of Erwin, Tenn., James T. Mumpower of Bristol Tennessee, Clarence Mumpower of Bristol Virginia, and Carl Mumpower of Bristol Tennessee; sisters Lois Houser of Blountville and Ruby Hurley of Kingsport; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery with Ted Ryan and L.G. Widener officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 9-10:30 a.m. at Weaver Funeral Home. Mr. Hayden, 60, passed away at 11:05 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, in the emergency room at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

VANSANT - Howard Garnett Jones, 70, of Route 1 passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. Born in Rural Retreat, he was a son of the late George Harvey and Edith Sage Jones. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he was last employed as a computer operator at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and he was a member of Russell Fork Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Deel Jones; two sisters, Jean Copenhaver of Crockett, Va., and Nena Caroll Jones of Rural Retreat; and one nephew, David Copenhaver of Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home with Denver Barton, David Owens and D.J. Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Deel Family Cemetery (Little Fox) Route 1, Vansant. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. American Legion Post 164 will conduct military graveside rites. DAMASCUS - Lacy E. Parker, 88, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a son of the late William C. and Elizabeth Lewis Parker. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Zachery Lane. Mr. Parker was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II, a member of VFW Post 9830, American Legion Post 235, Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. 104, and the Damascus Citizens Club.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Greer Parker; one son, Steve Parker and wife, Sandra, of Orange Park, Fla.; two grandchildren, Lynette Lane and Anne Lambretch, both of Orange Park; four great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Lacy, Reese and Griffith; and several nieces and nephews.

HAYSI - Juanita B. Powers, 74, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Birchleaf, Va., following a lengthy illness. A native of Dickenson County, she was a daugther of the late George C. and Pinkie Lee Hall Powers. A lifelong resident of Haysi, she was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee, a retired elementary school teacher, a former worthy matron of Eastern Star, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary society for women teachers, and a member of Dickenson First Presbyterian Church in Haysi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, G.C. and Bill Roger Powers; and a sister, Angeta Powers Willis.
Survivors include two brothers, Harold and wife, Katy Jo, Powers and Jody Bill Powers of Haysi; a sister and her husband, Norma P. and Alfred Dabney of Mainland, Fla.; three nieces, Linda Willis, Sharon Jo Ratliff and Heather Ratliff; and three nephews, Dan, George W. and Brett Powers.

WISE - Margaret Lee Sexton, 73, died Tuesday July 23, 2002, in Lonesome Pine Hospital. She was a member of Freedom of Worship Church, Norton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Ethel Roark Yeary; a brother, Charles Allen Yeary; a sister, Gladys Irene Yeary; and two infant sons.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Claude Taylor of Wise and Nancy and Vester Jr. (June) Fields of Norton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bobbie Jo Yeary of Chicago and Peggy Miracle of Pineville, Ky.; two half-brothers, Howard Wynn and Ernest Miracle; three half-sisters, Shirley Lewis, Bonnie O'Neil and Barbara Wynn; and friends and caregivers, Betty King and Barbara Taylor.

BIRCHLEAF, Va. - Jeff Turner, 81, of Star Route passed away Monday, July 22, 2002, at home. A native of Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Morgan and Hattie Fleming Turner. He was a retired miner, a member of the UMWA Local 1256, a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Erlene Turner and a son, Kenny Turner.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Colley Turner; a daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Ronnie Sharp of Birchleaf; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Darlene Turner of Clintwood; an adopted son and his wife, Ronnie Dean and Shelby Jean Turner of Birchleaf; a daughter-in-law, Charlene Turner of Haysi; three sisters, Carrie Hays of Caney Ridge, Va., Genola Stalcup of Bristol Tennessee, and Faye Minga of Blountville; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Denny Deel and Jackie Yates. Burial will follow in Sutherland Cemetery, Birchleaf. Jesse D. Blevins
GREEN COVE, Va. - Jesse D. Blevins, 74, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at his residence after a courageous struggle with cancer. He was a native of Washington County and had lived in Maryland for 30 years before moving back to Green Cove in 1980. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflict. Mr. Blevins retired from the Division of Motor Vehicles in Washington, D.C., and was a member of Green Cove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn M. Blevins; his father and mother, C. Dewey and S. Catherine Blevins; and a sister, Esther Duvak.
He is survived by one son, Jeffery Blevins of Green Cove; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Martin Klapac of College Park, Md.; six grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew Blevins and Kyle, Rosemary, Joseph and Timothy Klapac; three sisters, Edith Ashley and Louise Waters, both of Abingdon, and Ima Layman of Farmington, N.M.; one brother, Estel Blevins of Meadowview; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rena and Reece Wyatt of Spotsylvania, Va.; dear friend, Russ Barr; and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.
