MARION - Mr. Charles Preston Gentry, 57, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Gentry was born in Smyth County to the late Richard and Anna Lee Gentry and retired from the State Highway Shop with more than 27 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Gentry of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mandy and Darryl Smith of Marion, Sandy Harris of Atkins and Candy and Rodney Hendrickson of Marion; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Larry and Vanessa Call of Atkins; one stepdaughter, Crystal Call of Marion; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Joe Lee Bowman of Rural Retreat, Dorothy and Alvin McBroom of Marion and Katherine and Jim Ward of Marion; seven grandchildren, Heather and Jasper Smith, Daphne, Chasidy and Adam Harris and Darian and Magie Hendrickson; one step-grandchild, Shane Barlow; special friend, Henry Harris; family companion Punkin; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Interment will follow in Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Gentry family.

WISE - Doward (Steve) Gibson, 73, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

The family of William H. "Bill" Helton will receive friends from 4 to 7 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Blevins Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 10 o'clock Monday morning, July 8, 2002, at North Bristol Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Steele, Rev. Eric Godfrey and Rev. William Slagle officiating. Eulogies will be delivered by Bristol Virginia Chief of Police William H. Price and Former Chief of Police Tom Stone. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with Police Honors presented by the Bristol Virginia Police Department Honor Guard. Mr. Helton, 69, of Bristol Virginia, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Elsie C. McGlothlin
RAVEN, Va. - Mrs. Elsie Clara McGlothlin, 86, of the Road Ridge section passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, at home following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Raven and was the daughter of the late Lemuel and Susie Cochran Palmer, both Raven natives.
She had made her home in the Raven area all of her life and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jody McGlothlin; one great-grandchild, Ashley Nicole McGlothlin; and several sisters and brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors are three sons, Mr. James Manuel McGlothlin and wife, Audrey, of Swords Creek, Va., Rev. Grady G. McGlothlin of Doran, Va., and Rev. Charlie G. McGlothlin and wife, Connie, of Raven; six grandchildren,Teddy McGlothlin, Greg McGlothlin, Monica Terrence, Crystal Walk, Michelle Johnson and Stephanie Mullins; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. James Salyers officiating. Interment will follow at McGlothlin Family Cemetery on Road Ridge near Raven. Grandsons, great-grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Gladys W. Rowe
ROWE - Mrs. Gladys Whitt Rowe, 86, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center following a long illness. Mrs. Rowe was born on Drill Mountain to Flemon and Ida Vandyke Whitt on May 30, 1916. In the '30s, she married Aldon McKinley Rowe and moved to Rowe. They became partners in life, family and business. She was the bookkeeper/treasurer for their business ventures. She took joy in being a wife, homemaker and mother. They were members of Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church. Together they made every effort to be of support to friends, neighbors and their community until his death in 1983 and her illness forced her homebound.
Mrs. Rowe was the last surviving member of her birth family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ronnie; four sisters; and one brother.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Geraldine (Gerri) Hale and Judith (Judy) Rowe Nisich; two sons, Malcolm (Jim) Rowe and his wife, Evelyn Martin Rowe, of Honaker, and Garry W. (Sach) Rowe and his wife, Jean Harp Rowe, of Rowe; 11 grandchildren, Randy Keene, Scott Hale and his wife, Sandy, and Toby Hale and his wife, Kathy, all of Lanexa, Va., Alden H. (Junior) Rowe of Elk Garden, Va., Joann Duncan and her husband, Phil, of Katy, Texas, Chris Rowe and his wife, Phoebe, of Honaker, Penny Baldwin and her husband, Terry, of Mavisdale, Va., Gary Wayne Rowe Jr. of Rowe and Tammy Miller and her husband, Rex, of Bristol Virginia, Donald A. Nisich and his wife, Camille, of Austin, Texas, and Anthony Aldon Nisich of Toano, Va.; 13 great-grandchildren, Brandi, Jason and Justin Rowe, Randall and Jessica Keene, Elizabeth and Thomas Hale, Matthew Compton, Tracy and Sarah Duncan, Amanda and Matthew Baldwin and Amber Rowe; two great-great-grandchildren, Desarai Neal and Dylan Miller; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Rowe Fleming and Ellen Rowe Fletcher; one brother-in-law, Ervin Rowe; and several nieces and nephews whose calls and visits she always enjoyed also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Troy Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Whitt Cemetery at Drill, Va.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker.
Kenneth M. Starnes
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Kenneth M. Starnes, 77, formerly of Honaker, died July 5, 2002, in a Chesapeake hospital.
He was a son of of the late, John M. and Eva Miller Starnes.
Surviving are four sons, Wayne Starnes, Bruce Starnes, Randy Starnes and Michael Starnes, all of Chesapeake; four sisters, Marie Steele of Columbus, Ohio, Helen Bartee and Eula Smith, both of Abingdon, and Ruth Slate of Honaker; and several grandchildren.
Burial will be in Chesapeake.

Mary Louise Stepp
Mary Louise Stepp, 100, of 344 Euclid Ave., Bristol Virginia died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville.
Mrs. Stepp was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church. She was a past-president of W.S.C.S. Missionary Society of Anderson Street United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a former member of Mountain Vale Garden Club, president of the George Washington School PTA in 1932-33, and a former member of the Eastern Star 162. Mrs. Stepp was preceded indeath by her husband, George Silas Stepp.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Stepp Cass of Bristol Virginia; and two grandsons, Stephen B. Cass of San Francisco and Timothy D. Cass of Bristol Tennessee. Also surviving are two great-granddaughters; two great-great-granddaughters; four nieces; and one nephew.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Fleenor officiating. There will be no formal visitation, but friends may call any time at Akard Funeral Home. E-mail condolences may be sent to akardfh@peercom.net.

Buena V. Taylor
Buena V. Taylor, 90, of Bristol Tennessee went to be with her Lord and Savior July 4, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born July 2, 1912, in Washington County to the late Roy and Ida Williams. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Jess S. Taylor. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, where she was a member of Holston Valley Christian Church and adult Sunday school teacher for many years. Mrs. Taylor was a retired employee of Cortrim Hardware Parts Co. After retirement she worked at Jacobs Creek Job Corps in the Older Americans Program.
Survivors include one daughter, Louise Hartsock and husband, Mack, of Bristol Tennessee; granddaughter Sonja and special grandson-in-law, Steve Cox; great-grandchildren, Kristin Cox, Derrick Cox, Kelly Smith, Stevan Cox; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lou Tester of Bristol Tennessee and Barbara Groom of Nashville; special niece, Helen Miller; and special friend, Linda Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, 2 p.m., July 7, 2002, in Holston Valley Christian Church with Ministers Howard Taylor, Gary Barnett and Gary Garland officiating. Burial will follow in Harold E. Barnett Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers are deacons of Holston Valley Christian Church.
Earnest N. Tedder
ABINGDON - Mr. Earnest N. Tedder, 98, died Friday, July 5, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mr. Tedder had lived most of his life in Washington County and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Pauline Tedder; and a daughter, Ruby Mazza.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence Tedder of Abingdon and Douglas N. Tedder and wife, Susan, of Danville, Va.; two daughters, Helen Fleenor of Danville and Myrtle Lilly and husband, Mike, of Meadowview; one brother, Howard Tedder of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters, Katherine Edwards of Austinville, Va., and Grace Nelson of Baltimore; 39 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, July 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the graveside in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Mr. John Tilson officiating.
Pallbearers will be Richard Lawson, Larry Mazza, Jerry Mazza, Mike Lilly, Kenneth Lilly and Brent Fleenor.
Those attending the service Monday may assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.

RICHMOND - Samuel D. Turner, 26, of Gold Finch Drive passed away Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond. Born in Michigan, he was the son of Jimmy and Janet Y. Earls Turner of Richmond. Mr. Turner was a repairman and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Stella and Wiley Turner.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his girlfiend, Stephanie Forsythe; a brother, David Gene Turner and his fiancee, Susan Hartman, of Richmond; maternal gandparents, Jack and Dorothy Earls of Madison Heights, Mich.; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and one nephew, Anthony Turner.

WISE - Ellen Lee Vanover, 82, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002, at home.
She was a member of Stephens Church of God and a dedicated homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel B. Vanover.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty Wright of Wise; granddaughter and husband, Teresa and Mike Flanary of Wise; special friends, Evelyn and Debbie Adams; three brothers, Jennings Vanover and Coy Vanover, both of Wise, and Garfield Vanover of Coeburn; four sisters, Bea Dale of Missouri, Charlotte Johnson of Coeburn and Emma Mullins and Ilah Kiser, both of Wise.

Worley L. Berry
BLUFF CITY - Worley Lewis Berry, age 76, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.
Mr. Worley was a life long resident of Bluff City and a well-known self-employed mechanic in the area. He was a U.S. Army veteran where he served during World War II and a member of Holston Baptist Church.
Survivors include his beloved wife and companion of 55 years, Josie; one brother, Farrell Berry of Bristol Tennessee; three sisters, Elsie Webb and Millie Webb, both of Bluff City, and Elizabeth Gillespie of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Crews and Dr. Roy Branson officiating. Donald M. Deskins
HONAKER - Mr. Donald Melvin (Don) Deskins, age 54, went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 5, 2002, at his home. Born Aug. 18, 1947, in Red Ash, Va., he was a son of the late William Lee and Thelma Elizabeth Messick Deskins. Don was a loving husband, father and papaw. He was a faithful member of Calvary Lighthouse Ministries in Honaker for the past 20 years. He served his Lord in many ways over the years as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader and a member of the praise and worship team. He always had a warm smile and a hug for everyone, He was employed by Clinch Valley Medical Center for the past 33 years.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Patricia Carolyn Miller Deskins of the home; one daughter, Tabitha Deskins Robinett of Honaker; one son, Jonathan Lee Deskins of the home; one granddaughter, Alyssa Morgan Robinett; four brothers, George "Tommy" Deskins of Cedar Bluff, Alfred Deskins of Colorado Springs, Colo., Darrell Deskins of Paint Lick, Va., and his twin brother, Ronnie Deskins of Raven, Va.; four sisters, Beatrice Hess of Richlands, Frances Welch of Pontiac, Mich., Jennie Belle Short of Fort Deposit, Md., and Barbara Hess of Raven; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Mike Ryan and Rev. Roy Farmer officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. WISE - Doward (Steve) Gibson, 73, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a retired coal miner, former employee of Westmoreland Coal Co., member of U.M.W.A. and was of the Protestant faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Lucy Edwards Gibson.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Miller Gibson of Wise; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Gibson and Rosa of Wise and Gregory Gibson and Lisa of Mt. Carmel, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Gibson Hurley and Jack of Coeburn and Kimberly Gibson Wells and Tommy of Kingsport; one sister, Lois Richardson of Abingdon; two grandsons, Michael Gibson and Sgt. 1st Class Travis Meade; four step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. - Mrs. Gertrude M. Hale, age 83, of the Paintlick section, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a long illness. A native of Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Sarah Whitt Street.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman F. Hale; a daughter, Shirley Hale; a son, Carlos Hale; a grandson, Michael Greatorex; four brothers; and three sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Ralph Hale and wife Rhonda of Honaker and Carrol Hale and wife Anna of Cedar Bluff; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Lois) Norton of Hampton, Va.,. Mrs. Roger (Darlis) Fields of Manassas, Va., Mrs. John (Barbara) Stout of Oakwood, Va., and Mrs. Joe (Norma) Campbell of Richlands; two sisters, Cora Dye and Avenelle Casey, both of Honaker; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Vernie H. Hubbard
CLEVELAND, Va. - Mr. Vernie H. Hubbard, age 86, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1915, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late John and Helen Hubbard. He was a member of the UMWA and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Zilphia Musick Hubbard.
Survivors include eight sons and daughters-in-law, L.D. Hubbard of the home, Roger and Mildred Hubbard of Newport News, Va., Tom and Cathy Hubbard of Cleveland, Va., Willis and Sharon Hubbard, Larry and Peggy Hubbard and Darl and Teresa Hubbard, all of Honaker, and Johnny and Christine Hubbard and Ralph and Sherry Hubbard, all of Lebanon; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Kenneth Owens of Honaker; two sisters-in-law, Helen Hubbard of Johnson City and Elsie Wood of Jacksonville, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

George Robert Kilgore
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - George Robert Kilgore Sr. died Friday, July 5, 2002.
He was born in Wise, Va., a son of the late Charles T. and Alice Sheppe Kilgore, and moved to Bristol in 1919. While in Bristol, he was ordained to the gospel ministry. He moved to Tampa, Fla., in 1945, where he was the owner of Shutters, Unlimited. In 1982, he moved to Doylestown and was a member of Pineville Community Chapel in Pineville.
He is survived by his wife, Beryl Phipps Kilgore; one daughter, Dr. Martha MacCullough of Doylestown; one son, Dr. G. Robert Kilgore Jr. of Holland, Pa.; one brother, Charles Kilgore of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Mountain View Cemetery with Dr. G. Robert Kilgore Jr. officiating. Burial will follow.

Virginia T. Marston
MEMPHIS - Virginia Thompson Marston, 91, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, died July 3, 2002, in a nursing home in Memphis.
She moved to Bristol in 1960 and was the widow of Charles Richard Martson. She moved from Bristol to Memphis in 1997. She was active at the Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church and as a pink lady at Bristol Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of Maryville College.
Surviving are four sons, George Marston of Memphis, Charles Marston of Franklin, Tenn., Jim Marston of Mechanicsville, Va., and Robin Marston of Concord, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Maryville, Tenn.
