CHILHOWIE - Gary Wayne Phibbs, 55, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at home. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced later by Seaver-Brown Funeral Service.

Betty Robinette
HONAKER - Mrs. Betty Mae Robinette, 74, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born July 12, 1928, in Wayne, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Hazel Trodglon Wheeler. She had spent most of her life in the Honaker area and was a member of the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church. She was a member of the Swords Creek Senior Citizens.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Robinette; and her stepfather, Ralph Wheeler.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Miller of Abingdon, Sandy Stanley and her husband Gwin of Bristol Virginia, and Geraldine Sykes and her husband, Lonnie of Honaker; one son, Don Robinette and Angie of Lebanon; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Larry (Doris) Miller of Honaker and Betty Richardson of Swords Creek; 11 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Brother Les Ritchie officiating. Interment will follow in the Call Cemetery in Swords Creek.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edna B. Rose
RICHLANDS - Mrs. Edna Helen Ball Rose, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Russell County, and was a daughter of the late James Lindsey Ball and Marquerite Anna Struck Ball, both Russell County natives. She had made her home in the Richlands area the past 40 years and was a retired LPN, serving 20 years with Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital. She was a member of Richlands Presbyterian Church, the Richlands Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 Ladies Auxiliary, Richlands Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 104, the White Shrine, Pocahontas Improved Order of Red Men and the Richlands Rebekah Lodge 62. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. T.T. (Ted) Rose; one brother, George Allen Ball; and one nephew, Dairus Allen Ball.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors are stepson, Mr. Bobby D. Rose of Gainesville, Fla.; her loyal companion, "Sugar Rose"; two nieces, Ms. Anna Rosalee Ball of Louisville, Ky., and Ms. Carmen Serita Ball of Paris, France; and second cousins Betty McGlothlin, Louise Wilson and Sarah Vandyke.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Norman Derosiers officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Members of Richlands VFW Post 9640 and Disabled American Veteran Tazewell County Chaper 31 will serve as honorary pallbearers. Members of the Richlands Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 104 will conduct graveside services. Friends may call at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands after 6 p.m. Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058 and the American Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852. Charles K. Snider
MARION - Charles K. Snider, 80, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. Charles was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. Following military service he graduated from National Business College and began working in the family business, Smyth County Motor Co. Most recently, he worked as an agent for Royal Oak Realty. Charles had more than 60 years of service as a member of the Marion Volunteer Fire Department, having served as chief for two terms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence C. Snider. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon S. and Steve Hamrick of Anchorage, Alaska, Carolyn S. and Robin Covert of Raleigh, N.C., and Catherine S. and Michael Miller of Taylorsville, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth K. II and Rhonda Snider of Marion; two sisters, Madelon S. Crockett of Wytheville and Evelyn "Tootsie" Berry of Chilhowie; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Elder Scott Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Marion. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations for a memorial in his honor may be made to the MarionVolunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 706, Marion, VA 24354. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Snider family.

Flora Mae Sproles
Funeral services for Flora Mae Sproles will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eric Godfrey, Dr. Malcolm Stewart and Rev. Mr. Harry Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the following grandsons, Jason LaFollette, Jerry Sproles, Josh Sproles, Chris Sproles, Danny Eastridge and Ike Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bernard Leonard, Jimmy Leonard, Charles Leonard, Johnny Leonard Jr., Donald Leonard, Terry Sproles and Junior Moore.
Mrs. Sproles, 80, of 11599 Goose Creek Road, Bristol, Va., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Walter G. Stevens
HONAKER - Mr. Walter Gaines Stevens, 74, passed away Thursday night, Oct. 17, 2002, in a Richlands hospital. Born May 5, 1928, in Drill, Va., he was a son of the late Harvey Stevens and Monnie Hess Stevens Cook. He had lived most of his life in the area and was a disabled coal miner. He was a member of Drill Chapel Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Walter Cook; three brothers, James Allen Stevens, Corbett Ballard Cook and Roger Cook; and three sisters, Lacie Edith Mabe, Virginia Johnson and Barbara Ann Cook.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dagney Stevens of the home; two daughters, Alma McMillan of Honaker and Patricia Thomas and her husband, Nathan Thomas Jr., of Rosedale, Va.; one son, Darrell Dean Stevens and his wife, Mae Edna, of Drill; two sisters, Helen Ruth Smith of Richlands and Wanda Mitchell of Lebanon; four brothers, Elden Cook and Douglas Cook, both of Rowe, Va., J.C. Cook of Abingdon and Donald Lee Cook of Manassas, Va.; four grandsons, Jonathan Randall Thomas, Christopher Stevens, Eddie Smith and Brandon Shawn Thomas; one granddaughter, Heather Leann Thomas; two great-grandsons, Dakota Stevens and Hunter Smith; one step-granddaughter, Sandy Perkins; two step-great-granddaughters, Samantha Perkins and Brooke Perkins; special cargiver, Bonnie Stanley; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Johnny Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Whitt Cemetery at Drill.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Friends may call at Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Saturday.

Stella B. Strouth
Stella "Bea" Strouth, 83, of 1613 Virginia Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Oct. 17,. 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House. She was a native of Boone, N.C., and daughter of the late Noah G. and Malzona Triplett Wheeler. She was a retired employee of Pippin Florist and a member of the Friendship Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Kay Strouth and Don and Ellen Strouth; and sister, Effie Rogers. Also surviving are five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershall "Doc" Strouth; and a son, Ronnie Strouth.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Sam officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Sunday in the Mausoleum Chapel. A special thanks to the staff and residents of Broadmore assisted living home and Wellmont Hospice House.

Hazel W. Taylor
MEADOWVIEW - Mrs. Hazel W. Taylor, 83, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Valley Healthcare. She moved to Washington County in 1953. She was a member of Glade Spring Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Taylor; and a grandson, Jason Todd "Jay Tee" Taylor.
She is survived by three sons, John W. Taylor, Marvin L. Taylor and Thomas G. Taylor, all of Meadowview; one daughter, Carole T. Billings of Roanoke; two brothers, Bobby Wall of Bristol Tennessee and David Wall of Danville; eight sisters, Beryl Soyars of Cascade, Va., Louise Dalton, Esther Soyars, Lorna Hughes, Dorothy Sowell, Nancy Garwood, June Hylton and Patsy Pyron, all of Danville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral servcie will be conducted Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dennis Blazier officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home or any time at the home of her sons. Pallbearers will be Chris Taylor, Kevin Taylor, Sean Taylor, Brian S. Taylor, Capt. J. Barbara B. Ault
CLERMONT, Fla. - Mrs. Barbara Anne Booher Ault, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002. Mrs. Ault was born April 12, 1937, in Abingdon, to the late Albert T. Booher and Rachel Hale Booher. She was a homemaker and an accounting clerk. Mrs. Ault was a member of South Lake Presbyterian Church in Clermont.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Ault of Clermont; one son, Edmund T. Ault of Clermont; two daughters, Sara Cahill and Debora Holley, both of Clermont; two sisters, Amelia McConnell of Abingdon and Julia Nelson of Galax; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. Rev. Robert Tolar will officiate. A private interment will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park.

Katy B. Belcher
GLADE SPRING - Katy N. Ball Belcher, 63 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee, following a brief illness. Born at Blackberry, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Elder Teddy Roosevelt and Dolly Deel Ball. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life moving to Glade Spring in 2000 and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. She was a faithful wife, loving mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Belcher is survived by her husband of 44 years, Raymond Richard Belcher, Glade Spring; two sons, Ricky Joe and wife Tammy Belcher, Kingsport and Larry Robert and wife Carla Belcher, Conaway, Va.; one sister, Ida Bell Alliman, Toledo, Ohio; one brother, James Clyde Ball, Glade Spring; three grandchildren, Dolly Rena OQuinn, Teddy Joe Belcher and Jessica Nicole Belcher; and one great-grandson, Matthew Logan OQuinn.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Don Stacy, Shawn Dotson, Jeff Dotson and Billy Cook officiating with burial to follow in the Ramey Cemetery, Conaway, Va.

LAUREL BLOOMERY, Tenn. - Jordan Dale Blevins, 13-day-old infant son of Kristy Swift of Laurel Bloomery and Ronald Blevins of Konnarock, Va.,. died on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Jordan was preceded in death by is twin sister, Sierra Jade Blevins on Nov. 5, 2002; his paternal grandmother, Patty Blevins; and by two uncles, Kevin Swift and Donnie Blevins.
In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Lisa Daye Swift and Bobby Swift of Laurel Bloomery; his paternal grandfather, Ronald Blevins Sr. of Konnarock; his maternal great-grandparents, John and Patsy Gentry of Taylors Valley, Va.; his maternal great-grandmother, Betty Roop of Laurel Bloomery; his maternal great-grandfather, Dave Daye of Mountain City, Tenn.; his paternal great-grandmothers, Barbara Trivett of Konnarock and Peggy Blevins of Whitetop, Va.; four aunts, Carrie Blevins of Konnarock, Kimmy Carlson of Laurel Bloomery, Kayla Swift of Mountain City and April Larue of Elkin, N.C.; one uncle, Cody Carlson of Mountain City; and several great-aunts and great-uncles and cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the graveside in Azen Cemetery, Konnarock, with Pastor James Lundy officiating. HAYSI - Naomi Deel, 77, of Route 2, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her residence. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Freelin and Dolly Mae Compton Lockhart. She was a homemaker and a member of Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church. Mrs. Deel was preceded in death by two infants, Harless and Eula Mae; and three brothers, Julius, Lewis and Raymond Lockhart.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Deel; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Shirley Deel of Haysi; a daughter and son-in-law, Thelma and Windell Deel of Haysi; two grandchildren, Brian Deel and Beverly Yates; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Lockhart; and a sister, Geraldine McCowan.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Roger Coleman, Freddie Ramey, Earl Dean Yates, Andy Deel, Bobby Davis, Denny Deel, Freelin Yates and Danny Yates officiating. Burial will follow in the George W. Deel Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Pallbearers will be deacons of Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church. The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church where a service will be held at 7 p.m.

BLOUNTVILLE - Graveside services Ronald L. Dotson will be conducted on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Susong Cemetery with Rev. Dwight Shaffer officiating. A procession of family and friends will leave the funeral home at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday. Pallbearers will be family. Honorary pallbearers include, Leroy Arwood, Willard Guillion, David Williams, Jackie Cotter, Perry Johnson, "Freeman", friends at Virginia Woodworking and Joseph Godsey Jr. Military honors will be presented by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975.
Mr. Dotson Sr., 70, of 523 Camp Placid Road, passed away on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at his residence.

Melba Heiner Gold
KINGSPORT - Melba Heiner Gold, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 9, quietly in her sleep at her home.
Mrs. Gold was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family and friends lovingly knew her as Grandma Gold.
Born in Morgan, Utah, she had resided in Abingdon for 47 years before moving to Kingsport in 1999. Mrs. Gold graduated from Utah State Agricultural College with a degree in education. She taught elementary school in Weber County, Utah, and at Abingdon Elementary School, where she warmly touched the lives of many school age children. After retirement from public schools, she continued to teach as a volunteer in the Highlands Educational Literacy Program in Abingdon, served as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital and Barter Theater in Abingdon, and later as a volunteer at Holston Elementary School in Blountville until early this year.
She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was actively involved in all aspects of church life. She served as a visiting teacher, Sunday School teacher, primary president, Relief Society president and Family History Center worker. She married Sherman F. Gold in the Logan, Utah Temple July 26, 1940.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Sherman F. Gold; two brothers, Sydney H. Heiner and Clifton Wesley Heiner; and an infant sister, Betty Heiner of Morgan, Utah.
Surviving are two sisters, Louise Andersen, Ogden, Utah, and Marilyn Mecham, Salt Lake City, Utah; two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Faye Gold, Kingsport and Dirk and Isabel Gold, Waynesboro, Va.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Kay and Boyd Alder, Santa Clara, Calif., Rosemary and Ray Rawlins, Saratoga Springs, Utah; Janie and Phil Nelson, Walnut Creek, Calif., and Julie and Newell Wright, Bridgewater, Va.; 24 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 13 Heritage Drive, Bristol, Va. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the church with Bishop William Whitlock and Bishop LeGrande Boyer officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Sherman and Melba Gold Memorial Scholarship Fund, Abingdon High School, 705 Thompson Drive, Abingdon, Va., or the Perpetual Education Fund, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 100 Canongate Road, Kingsport, TN.
