Charles H. Kestner
Mr. Charles Howard Kestner, 60, of the Goose Pimple Junction community, Bristol Virginia, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Henry Washington Kestner and Bessie Litton Kestner.
Mr. Kestner was a member of Central Baptist Church and the former owner and operator of C & J Auto Body Shop for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Bott Kestner; a son, Mark Kestner and wife, Sheri, of Abingdon; a daughter, Kim Taylor and husband, Joel, of Abingdon; three brothers, Roger Kestner, Doug Kestner and Bobby Kestner, all of Glade Spring; three sisters, Lynda Pruner of Bristol Tenneseee, Brenda Haynes of Randleman, N.C., and Patricia Ann Kestner of Glade Spring; five grandchildren, Adam Burton, Cody Kestner, Katelyn Kestner and Andrew Kestner; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Les Ketron officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Casketbearers will be Jack Latham, Ken Pope, Irving Stringer, Don Harry, Don Salyer, Clyde Ward, David Kestner and Walter Burton. Honorary casketbearers will be J.C. Crigger, H.C. Elizabeth G. Lake
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Elizabeth Roberta Gilmour Lake, a resident of Arbor Acres, died at Fitzgerald Health Center Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002.
Mrs. Lake was born in Chester, S.C., March 20, 1912. She was the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Abram David Pollock Gilmour and Elizabeth Monroe Taylor Gilmour. Mrs. Lake grew up in Wilmington, N.C. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and spent one year of study abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris.
Mrs. Lake married the Rev. Dr. Julian Lake Dec. 28, 1933. They were married for 65 years. Dr. Lake died Nov. 3, 1999. Mrs. Lake was a longtime member of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Sorosis Club and was honored as a lifetime member of the Women of the First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem.
She and Dr. Lake served the Warrenton Presbyterian Church in Warrenton, Va., Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, S.C., First Presbyterian Church in Bristol Tennessee, First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, N.C., and Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C., until his retirement in Winston-Salem in 1972. After Dr. Lake's retirement, they served seven interim pastorates throughout the Southeast.
Mrs. Lake's grandparents and parents were instrumental in the establishment of the Montreat Presbyterian Conference Center in Montreat, N.C. It was here where the Lakes built the Gilmour-Lake Home "Edgemont" that has been a beloved family gathering place for many generations.
A son, the Rev. Robert Janney Lake; and two brothers, Monroe Taylor Gilmour and Matthew Pollock Gilmour, preceded Mrs. Lake in death.
Mrs. Lake is survived by her children, Julian Gilmour Lake and spouse, Nancy Ball Lake, Elizabeth "Betty" Lake Orr and spouse, Richard Graham Orr, of Winston-Salem and Margaret Scott "Scottie" Lake Lindsay and spouse, the Rev. Scott Lindsay, of Charlotte; her grandchildren, London Lake Pickett of Winston-Salem, Lydia Sheppard Lake of Falls Church, Va., Charles Lamb Cauthen Jr., Elizabeth Gillmour McLean and Catherine Lake Cauthen, all of Charlotte, Dr. Robert Scott Lake of Daniel Island, S.C., Julia Lake Shealy of Atlanta, David Scott Lindsay Jr. of Clinton, S.C., Sarah Lindsay Balsley of Atlanta and Margaret Lee Lindsay of Charlotte. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren.
A family graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. The family will remain after the service to receive friends. Memorials may be made to the Julian and Robert Lake Scholarship Fund at Davidson College, the Robert Lake Fund at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem or the Mountain Retreat Association in Montreat, N.C., earmarked for the Robert Lake Park.

Willie O. McCoy
BLUFF CITY - Graveside services for Willie Oscar McCoy will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryan Phillips, Keith Phillips, Michael McCoy and Jimmy McCoy. Honorary pallbearers will be J.B. Kenton, Buck Richards and Ed Keeling.
Mr. McCoy, 82, of 227 Ash Lane, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in Johnson City Medical Center.

Harold L. Miles
Harold Lee "Waldo", "Tiny" Miles of 101 Elk Road, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Everette and Mable Sproles Miles and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was a retired truck driver with Overnite Transportation and was a faithful member of Steele Creek Missonary Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Miles; and brother, Jack Miles.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Miles; sons James Miles and wife, Arlene, of Bristol Tennessee, and Jeffrey Miles and wife, Stephanie, of Blountville; daughter, Tammie Miles Gross of Bristol Tennessee; stepdaughters, Renee Denton of Blountville and Michelle Simcox of Bluff City; stepson, Brandon Ford of Blountville; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Doug Miles and wife, Sue, of Bluff City.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Addington officiating. Committal service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Mountain View Mausoleum. Honorary pallbearers include Haynes Smith, William "Bill" Smith, Ed Hinkle, Keith Thomas, David McNally, Victor Hawkins, Norville McCracken, Lee Bentley and Doug Hilton. The family will receive friends Wednesday following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Steele Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 274 Old Stage Drive, Bristol, Tenn.

Dora L. Nickles
CLINTWOOD - Dora Mildred Lester Nickles, 91, went to be with her Lord, Nov. 30, 2002, at DCMC. She was of the Baptist faith. She worked for WM Ritter as a cook. She was born on Big A Mountain, Buchanan County, June 30, 1911. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Zed Lester and Dewey Boone. She was also preceded in death by her father, Charlie Lester, and her mother, Christine Davis Lester; and her husband, John Henry Nickles.
Survivors include two sons, John Charles Bill Nickles and wife, Nancy, of Warren, Mich., and Rufus Edward Shanghi Nickles and wife, Kim, of Clintwood; and two daughters, Betty Nickles Fleming and husband, Jimmy, of Clintwood and Peggy Harry of Ft. Pierce, Fla. She is also survived by a special friend, Magaline Widner Phillips; 14 grandchildren, Jeff Nickles, Shawn Nickles, Wendy Nickles, Kevin Nickles, Steven Fleming, J. Brent Fleming, Lauren Nickles, Chasity Glisson, Christian Nickles, David Harry, Russell Harry, Lynn Harry, Charlene Harry and Bobby Harry; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Granville J. Owens
ABINGDON - Mr. Granville J. Owens, 88, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Dickenson County, a graduate of Hiwassee College and East Tennessee State University. He was a teacher and principal in Dickenson County and in Washington County, was employed at Harmon Coal Co. and Mid Mountain Foods and was a member of Greendale Chapel. He was an avid reader and a fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He was preceded in death by a son, Alex Owens; a grandson, Scott Boatwright; and son-in-law, Steve Wingo.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.Virchel Deel Owens; two sons, Glenn Owens of Haysi and Bryan Owens of Bristol Virginia; three daughters, Joy Boatwright and Jean Wingo, both of Bristol Virginia, and Mary Minton of Abingdon; one brother, Leon Owens of Palatka, Fla.; two sisters, Gaynell Duty of Palatka and Ruby Deel of Prater, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

WHITETOP - Dan Price, 90, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002.
Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 p.m. in Helton Valley Baptist Church,Whitetop.

RICHLANDS - Mrs. Edith Alene Shortridge, 87, of 206 Lee St. passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in a Richlands hospital, following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Cedar Bluff and was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Nancy Brown Cruey, both Tazewell County natives.
She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was the founder and former owner of Cinderella Beauty Shop in Richlands. She was a member of Richlands Presbyterian Church and a member of Richlands Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 104.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, I.C. "Turk" Shortridge; one son, Ronald Shortridge; four sisters, Lona Hubbard, Dolly Smith, Lena Layman and Clara Shamblin; and five brothers, Jake, Bill, Charles, Nepolian and Alfred Cruey. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors are: one son, Kenneth Shortridge and wife, Brenda, of Belfast,Va.; one special grandson, Kenneth Shortridge Jr.; special friend and caregiver, Betty Stiltner; five grandchildren, Kimberly Wright, Rebecca Shortridge, Stephanie Shelton, Karen Cole and Debbie Shortridge; and six great-grandchildren, Patrick Cole, Travis Cole, Nicholas Cole, Stacey Cole, Austin Shelton and Victoria Shelton also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Bobby Laney officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Jack C. Sparger
ELIZABETHTON - Jack C. Sparger, 84, of 510 Golf Course Drive died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Bristol Tennessee, he was the son of the late Samuel and Eula Roberts Sparger. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton. Mr. Sparger was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Sparger.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Sparger of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ginger and Steve Dugger, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry R. and Ginny Sparger of Oakton,Va.; four grandchildren, Bethany Dugger and Nathan Dugger, both of Elizabethton, Kevin Sparger of Manassas Park, Va., and Patrick Sparger of Oakton; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Sparger of Manassas Park; one sister, June Sparger of Bristol Tennessee; one brother and sister-in-law, Don and Jean Sparger of Shady Valley; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Raymond and Imogene Millsaps of Elizabethton and Ed and Ginger Cobb of Elizabethton also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. The graveside service and interment will be Thursday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Thursday.

BLUFF CITY - Joyce Santos Tilly died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House. She was a native of Everett, Washington, and lived in the Bristol area for the past 15 years. She was born Nov. 15, 1935, to the late Adolfov Santosand Virginia Amatuzzi Santos. She was an LPN, a housewife and a member and faithfully attended Rock Hold United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Tilly.

ROANOKE - Charles H. Tolliver Jr., 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Our Lady of the Valley.
He was a native of Tazewell County, who lived in Washington County for 70 years before moving to Roanoke several years ago.
He was a retired foreman withVDOT and a member of Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 A.F. & A.M.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a son of the late Matthew Vance Tolliver and the late Mary Edith Taylor Tolliver.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruby S. Tolliver of Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs. James (Retha) Parker of Roanoke; one sister, Mrs. Alberta Dennison of Meadowview; one grandson, Joseph Parker and a granddaughter, Jamie Parker, both of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
Masonic services will be conducted at 10 a.m.Thursday by Abigndon Masonic Lodge No. 48 A.F. & A.M. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Knollkreg Memorial Park, Abingdon.
Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.

Bonnie Leab Melvin Trivett, 77, of 1810 6th St. Extension, Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born April 27, 1925, a daughter of the late Carlie B. and Gracie E. Leab. She was a homemaker and was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. She was the widow of Elmer E. Melvin and Garfield Trivett; and preceded in death by a sister, Anna Mae Vance; and brothers, J. Ombie Leab, Carl Leab and Edgar Leab.
Survivors include a son, Ernest Cassell and wife, Joyce; two daughters, Janice Brock and husband, Mike, and Linda Adams and husband, Jimmy; grandchildren, Kimberly Webb and husband, Marvin, Lisa Booher and husband, Michael, De De Hope and husband, Lapsley, David Brock and wife, Valerie, and Tammy Graham and husband, Shawn; six great-grandchildren, Brittani, Jake, Shane, Bradley, Kaitlyn and Deric; sister Vergie Eads; brother Charlie Leab; and several nieces and nephews.

Belle T. Watts
Belle G. Thornwell Watts, 87, passed away at Bristol Regional Medical Center Monday, Dec. 2, 2002.
She was born in Winnsboro, S.C., on Sept. 17, 1915, the daughter of Dr. James H. Thornwell III and Mary Jordan Thornwell. She had lived in Bristol Tennessee since 1978.
She was a graduate of Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., and received her master's degree from the University of South Carolina. She taught at Columbia College in Columbia, S.C., before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where she served as a meteorologist. Mrs. Watts had taught Western Civilization and American History classes at the University of Virginia Center at Abingdon. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol Virginia, where she led Bible studies and was active in the Presbyterian Women for many years. She had also served as an elder in the Presbyterian church. She was a member of Alpha Delta Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. Mrs.Watts was an avid reader and was a member of the Women's Literary Club of Bristol.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles A. Watts; her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Eddie Patterson of Bristol Virginia; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Louise Watts of Gaffney, S.C.; three grandchildren, 1st. Lt. David Watts of Osan Air Force Base, South Korea, and Jennifer Watts and Kerin Watts of Gaffney; and one foster brother, Tom Jordan of Hartsville, S.C.
A memorial service will be conducted in the chapel of Central Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon with Dr. David Wadsworth officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. A private interment will be conducted at Mountain View Cemetery.
