JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Mrs. Carrie Alice Madison Frazier, 83, 111 Woodland Circle, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a Bluff City native and the daughter of the late Daniel S. and Laura Bell Black Madison. She was a former pastor of A.M.E. Zion churches in Meadowview and Chilhowie and at Robinson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Bluff City. She attended Grace Temple Church, Eternal Life Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Frazier; seven brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include a brother, John W. Madison, Bluff City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Grace Temple Church, Eternal Life Center, 208 Garden Drive with Bishop Aaron H. Redd Sr. officiating. Burial to follow at Pinehurst Cemetery, Pulaski. KINGSPORT - Calling hours for Melba Heiner Gold will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 13 Heritage Drive, Bristol, Va. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the church with Bishop William Whilock and Bishop LeGrande Boyer officiating. M. Geraldine Gotta
M. Geraldine Gotta, 72, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House.
Born in Michigan, she spent most of her life in southern New Jersey and lived in Bristol Tennessee for the past 10 years. She was the widow of Roy F. Gotta Sr.
She was a den mother, active in Little League, a Girl Scout leader, band parents and a member of the Altar Guild.
Surviving are her children, Roy F. Gotta Jr. of New Jersey, Ralph S. Gotta of Oregon, and Laura Doughty of Bristol Tennessee; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The service and interment were held in Palmyra, N.J.

COEBURN - Garland Edward Hale, 81, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at the Heritage Hall Health Care, Wise. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph L. (Fate) and Maggie Stanley Hale; five brothers, Leon Hale, Kermit Hale, Lester Hale, and infants, Arveen Hale and Robert Hale; and a sister, Tessa Winebarger. He attended Nash's Chapel Baptist Church until he entered the nursing home in 1997.
Surviving are four sisters, Opal Adkins of Wise, Bonnie Yates of Clintwood, Pearl Blevins of Coeburn and Charlene Halloway of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Jack Hale of Haymarket, Va., and Arvil Hale of Darwin, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe C. Harr
BLOUNTVILLE - Joe Charles Harr, 94, formerly of 1329 Harrtown Road, went to be with his Lord Nov. 13, 2002, at Indian Path Hospital following a brief illness.
Joe was a life long resident of Sullivan County and was born Aug. 23, 1908, a son of the late Charles Edgar and Lelia Latture Harr. He was married to the late Lutie McConnell Harr who passed away June 3, 2001. Joe was a farmer and worked for several years in a sawmill on Harrtown Road. He was a member of the Jolly Springs United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Harr and Annabell Faust; and two brothers, Ernest Harr and Walter Harr.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Nottingham of Johnson City; sons and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Harr of Kingsport and Dale Harr of Morristown, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Laura McKelton, Kelly Martin and George Harr; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred Harr of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Saturday in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Harry Fleenor officiating. WISE - Nona Marie Justice, 86, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at her home.
She attended Beverly Hills Tabernacle, Wise.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Edison Justice.
Surviving are four sons, Elmer Justice of Wise, Luke Justice of Falmouth, Del., Roger Justice of Boston and Gene Justice of Alexandria, Va.; three daughters, Eloise Adkins and Mary Shepherd, both of Norton, and Judy Haynes of Wise, 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Charlie Steve Maggard
WISE - Charlie Steve Maggard, 85, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
He was a retired coal miner, former employee of Charles Stecker Coal Co. and was of the Pentecostal faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Lilburn and Celia Adams Maggard; four brothers, Rhoten Maggard, Henry Maggard, Harrison Maggard and Jim Maggard; three sisters, Mendie Hunsucker, Betty Wells and Alice Calhoun; two grandchildren, David Keith and Danny Lee Mathews; and one son-in-law, Frankie Lee Freeman.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Gertrude Muncy Maggard of Wise; one son, Samuel Steve Maggard of Norton; five daughters, Ruby Freeman, Delores Freeman, Dorothy Mathews, Patsy Motz and Jeanie Vanover, all of Wise; one brother, Sidney Maggard of Lake Wales, Fla.; one sister, Delphia Calhoun of Wildwood, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Susan T. McClain
POWHATAN, Va. - Mrs. Susan Kay Thompson McClain, 51, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her home. Born July 11, 1951, in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Kyle and Eura Fuller Thompson. She was of the Catholic faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Roby Thompson.
Survivors include her husband, Chris McClain of the home; one son, Joshua Allen McClain of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters, Kitty Lusby and her husband Maurice of Prince Frederick, Md., Nancy Bensing of Annapolis, Md., and Evonne Thompson of Prince Frederick; two brothers, R.L. Thompson and his wife, Kay of Big A Mountain, Va., and Joe W. Thompson and his wife, Shirley of Honaker; and several nieces, nephews, loving friends and compadres.

Byrd W. McDonald
PAINTSVILLE, Ky. - Byrd William (B.W.) McDonald, coal operator, business entrepreneur, civic leader and philanthropist died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Highlands Regional Medical Center's Emergency Room after a lengthy battle with heart problems. He was 61.
Mr. McDonald, a native of Whitewood, Virginia, was one of Eastern Kentucky's leading coal entrepreneurs who in recent years had expanded his successful business interests to include petroleum distribution, gasoline convenience stores, real estate, construction and outdoor advertising. He first entered business at the age of 13 selling gas, soft drinks and cigarettes to miners and truck drivers in the Whitewood, Virginia, area. After graduating from Whitewood High School at the age of 17, Mr. McDonald began hauling coal. This was the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the coal industry.
Following six months in the employ of Raytheon Corporation in San Francisco in 1960, Mr. McDonald spent the next eight years in the trucking, mining and construction business in Virginia and Kentucky, working at one time for Codell Construction in Winchester, Kentucky.
Beginning in 1969, Mr. McDonald and his partner, cousin and former school chum, the late J. W. Clifton, developed a close business and personal relationship with the management of Island Creek Coal Company, from whose property in Virginia and West Virginia they were hauling coal. At the urging of Island Creek, McDonald and Clifton formed Western Coal Corporation and entered into the contract mining business with Island Creek at Red Jacket in West Virginia's Mingo County in 1970.
Western moved its headquarters and principal coal mining operations to the Paintsville area in 1971 and in less than ten years Western was operating four large surface mining divisions in Kentucky and West Virginia and an underground mine in Virginia. With 250 pieces of equipment and more than 400 skilled men and women, the company produced more than 2 millions tons of coal in 1981. The company's contracts and equipment were sold to Energy Coal Partnership in 1982 in the first public securities sale involving contract mining.
Mr. McDonald continued his involvement in coal and coal-related industries until his death. At the time of his death he was president of Western Consolidated Corporation, Empire Kentucky Land Company, Colonial Coal Company, Action Petroleum Company, Western Construction Company, Action Outdoor Advertising and Faith Signs Company, Inter-Levisa Realty Company and McDonald Realty, LLC, in addition to numerous real estate holdings in Kentucky and Virginia.
Previous business interests included Star Gem Recording Studios in Nashville, Pier 99 Motel, Panama City, Florida, Burke Apartments, Washington, D. C., Windfall Gold Mining, Inc., Nome, Alaska, and Highlands Coal Sales, Inc., Paintsville.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Richlands (VA) Masonic Lodge AF & AM #318, Kentucky Coal Association, Kentucky Coal Operators Association, Kentucky Petroleum Marketers Association, Tennessee Walking Horse and Exhibitors Association, Country Music Association, Kentucky Sheriffs Association and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. Mr. McDonald had been a founding director of the Clinch Valley Bank & Trust of Richlands and a charter member of both the Kentucky and West Virginia Surface Mine Associations.
Mr. McDonald was born at Whitewood, Virginia, June 13, 1941, the son of the late Bill and Verlie McDonald. He is survived by his wife. Sherry Lyon McDonald, and their children Byshey Wren McDonald, Abraham Uriah McDonald and Aristotle Lyon McDonald of Paintsville. Mr. McDonald was previously married to Lena Cole McDonald with whom he had five children: Tim McDonald, Paintsville; Tammy McDonald Williams, Roaring Gap, North Carolina; Greg McDonald, Lexington; Greta McDonald Meek, Paintsville; and Byrd William McDonald II, Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by a sister, Linda M'Ledge Estridge, a brother-in-law, Henry Estridge, ten grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, November 14, and 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Paintsville. Funeral services for Mr. McDonald will be held at First Baptist Church on Saturday, November 16, at 2:00 p. m. The Reverend Donnie Patrick, Pastor of First Baptist Church, will conduct the services assisted by Reverends C. Hoge Hockensmith of lrvine, Drew Martin of Paris, Jim Hoskins of Kingsport and Larry O'Bryan of Paintsville. Burial will follow in Highlands Memorial Cemetery.

Guy A. Miller
HONAKER - Mr. Guy Arnold Miller, 85, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at his home. Born Feb. 15, 1917, in Swords Creek, Va., he was a son of the late Charlie Robert and Mary E. Corns Miller. A lifelong resident of the area, he was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Swords Creek Block Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edith Miller of the home; one daughter, Janice Miller Barrett and husband Roy B. of Cedar Bluff; one son, G. Wade Miller and wife Joyce of Arlington, Va.; one sister, Thelma Varney of Richlands; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter also survive.

James O. Mitchell
KINGSPORT - James Orville Mitchell, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Asbury Center at Baysmont Health Center.
He was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Hawkins County to the late Mack and Mallie Mitchell and resided most of his life in Kingsport. Mr. Mitchell served in the European Theatre during World War II. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Company after 40 years of service.
Mr. Mitchell was an avid hunter and fisherman while his health permitted.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Mitchell; son, Gary Mitchell; three sisters; and two brothers.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Kenneth Wright, Kingsport; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Terry and Debbie Mitchell and Perry Mitchell, all of Church Hill; grandchildren, Rebecca, Andy, Tabatha, Todd, Anna Marie, Jason and Natalie; great-grandchildren, Breeanna and Ryan; sisters, Mary Ruth Click, Eloise Mitchell, Jane Mitchell and Roberta Clark; brother, Melvin Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

Berton L. Monk
LEBANON - Berton L. Monk, 76, of 265 Monk St., died unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home.
Born Feb. 1, 1926, in Russell County the son of the late Jay and Marie Meade Monk, he was the owner and operator of Monk Supply Company until his retirement in 1989. He was a longtime ham radio operator with the call sign of W4GXD and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Peggy Snead Monk; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Patsy Monk and Jamie and Barbara Monk; a grandson, Cody Michael Monk; and a granddaughter, Hope Monk, all of Lebanon.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Rick Meade and the Rev. Austin Fields officiating. Samuel M. Patton
MARION - Samuel Mark Patton, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, Va. He was a life member of Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667 and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He worked for Southwestern State Hospital for 35 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Patton was preceded in death by his wife, Easter Pauline "Polly" Patton; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Patton; three brothers; and five sisters. He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon and Ruth Patton of Marion, Ernest and Edna Patton of West Carrollton, Ohio, and Raymond and Betty Patton of Lovell, Wyo.; one sister-in-law, Ethel Patton of Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Buddy Miller and Rev. Eddie Beck officiating.
