Jeanne D. Stophel
SALISBURY, N.C. - Jeanne D. Stophel, 38, died Wednesday, Nov.20, 2002, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of the Winston-Salem, N.C., area and was a daughter of the late Mack Junior Stophel and Betty Wood Stophel.
Survivors include her brother, Dennis Stophel and his wife, M.J.n of Winston-Salem; two nephews, Billy and Matthew of, Hamilton, Ohio; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family wishes to express special appreciation to Pat Myslicki and Clara Bowser.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Friday evenimg at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. .

Rev. Jack Sturgill
KINGSPORT - Rev. Bobby Jack Sturgill, 69, went home to be with the Lord late Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 20, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center of a massive heart attack.
Born in Wise County, he came to Kingsport in 1956. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from the U.S. Postal Service with more than 30 years of service.
Rev. Sturgill pastored Speers Ferry Evangelical Methodist Church for a short time and Liberty Hill Evangelical Methodist Church. He was pastor of Bible Way Baptist Church for the past 32 years, where it has grown from a small congregationto the present growing congregation. He dedicated his life to serving his Lord and pastoring and sharing the everlasting hope of Jesus Christ to others.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He was a rock in the time of trouble.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Sturgill and Katheen Barrett Sturgill; and two brothers, James and Sam.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine "Jerry" Sturgill of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Sturgill Cassedy and husband, Kelly, of Blountville; two sons and daughters-in-law, David Jack Sturgill and wife, Diana, of Gray and Bobby Neal Sturgill and wife, Elaine, of Kingsport; six grandchildren, Kristin Sturgill, Joshua Sturgill, Christopher Sturgill, Zachary Sturgill, Dylan Cassedy and Alexa Cassedy; two sisters, Nancy McMahan of Big Stone Gap, and Frances Williams of Church Hill; three brothers, Tommy Sturgill of Big Stone Gap, Carl Ray Sturgill of Coeburn and Howard Sturgill of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bible Way Baptist Church, Packinghouse Road.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Robert Fletcher officiating. Eulogy will be given by Wrightly Salling and Darris Horne.
Music will be provided by the church.
Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bible Way Baptist Church Building Fund, 520 Packinghouse Road, Kingsoport, TN 37660.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Bible Way Baptist Church and also Fred White, John Dockery and Steve Lyons.

Joanna K. Surber
ABINGDON - Mrs. Joanna Kelly Surber, 49, of 19372 Dennison Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County. She was a 1971 graduate of Patrick Henry High School and a graduate of Emory & Henry College and Radford College. Joanna was a first-grade teacher at Abingdon Elementary School, having taught in Washington County for 27 years. She also taught piano for more than 30 years to students of all ages. She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church and Phi Delta Kappa Teachers Fraternity. She was preceded in death by her father, James Thomas Kelly Sr.
She is survived by her husband, James C. Surber; her mother, Mrs. Oma Kelly of Chilhowie; one sister, Patsy Edmisten and husband, Willard, of Simpsonville, S.C.; three brothers, James T. Kelly Jr. and wife, Angie, of Meadowview, Bill Kelly and wife, Mary, of Alexandria and George Kelly and wife, Evelyn, of Bristol Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rowland, Rev. Betty Reiff and Rev. Billy Gillespie officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Rose Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary casketbearers will be the faculty and staff of Abingdon Elementary School, members of Abingdon United Methodist Church, her many piano students and her first-grade class, who were very special to her.

Fannie K. Wilmer
Fannie K. Wilmer, 89, a former resident of Amy Street, Bristol Virginia, went to be with the Lord Nov. 20, 2002, at NHC Bristol. She was born Aug. 28, 1913, in Castlewood, a daughter of the late Ora and Cynthia Amburgey and was the widow of Lawrence R. Wilmer. Mrs. Wilmer had lived in the Orange, Gordonsville and Lynchburg areas most of her life and had made her home in the Bristol area for the past several years, where she was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Mrs. Wilmer was preceded in death by two brothers, W.B. Kiser and Ora G. "Blue" Kiser.
Survivors include four sisters, Gertrude Fleenor, Hazel Zagerman, Nancy Starcher and Elizabeth Castle and husband, W.E. "Blackie", special friends Jack and Ruth Dye; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 571 Highway 126, with Pastor Todd Leonard officiating. Committal service and burial will be Monday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family. The family will receive friends from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the church in memory of Mrs. Wilmer.

COEBURN - Woodrow W. Yeary, 85, passed away Thrusay, Nov. 21, 2002, at home. He was former owner of Woody Sales and a former deputy sheriff of Wise County. Mr. Yeary was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Army, and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Eva Yeary Graham and Jim of Wise; two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny R. and Phyllis Yeary of Greensboro, N.C., and Richard S. and Ginger Yeary of Coeburn; a sister, Edna Kilgore of Coeburn; six grandchildren, Mark Graham, Kelly Graham, Phillip Yeary, Aaron Yeary, Stephanie Yeary and Patrick Yeary; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 8 p.m. Friday in Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Coeburn, with Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating. Ruby Elizabeth Carrier
Ruby Elizabeth Carrier, 80, of Bristol Tennessee died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a life long resident of Sullivan County and a daughter of the late Cleve and Minnie Tester Lunsford. She was a member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church and was the widow of Hobert William Carrier. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Millie Horne; a son, Lonnie Carrier; and a granddaughter, Dedi Horne.
Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Darlene Carrier of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Lawrence W. Carrier of Jonesborough, Tenn.; a sister, Ruth Johnson of Bristol; two brothers, J.C. Lunsford and Carl Lunsford, both of Bristol; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Penny Johnson.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Light officiating. The committal service and burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matthew Carrier, Michael Carrier, Bob Horne, Jeff Mustard, Randy Carrier, Steve Rainey, J.C.Lunsford and Earl Smithson. Naomi I. Farmer
Naomi Irene Farmer, 83, passed away Dec. 9, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Russell County to the late Rev. James Robert and Belvia Johnson Hubbard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Robert Hubbard Jr.
She was a member of Fellowship Chapel.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard J. Farmer of Bristol; two daughters, Violetta (Vi) Phillips and husband Frank of Bristol and Delores Garrison and husband J.D. of Cape Coral, Fla.; one son, Marvin Farmer and wife Janet of Bristol; two sisters, Mrs. Lewis (Mildred) Combs of Bristol and Mrs. Bill (Evelyn) Clark of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister-in-law, Mrs. James Robert (Juanita) Hubbard Jr. of Stockbridge, Ga.; five grandchildren, Renee' Dougherty, Mike Farmer, Kevin Farmer, David Garrison and Sarah Francis; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m.Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lester MacKinnon and Rev. Scott Price officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

CASTLEWOOD - Paul James (Pete) Hamilton, 64, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.
He was born inWise County, Va., son of the late Rollie and Vertie Hamilton.
He is survived by two daughters, Melissa Compton and husband Jeff of Castlewood and Judy Hartsock and husband Danny of St. Paul; one son, Joney Hamilton of Castlewood; one sister, Betty Easterly of Lebanon; three brothers, Earl Hamilton of Castlewood, Thomas Hamilton of Coeburn and Harold Hamilton Jr. of Dante, Va.; two grandchildren, Anastasia Hartsock and Zachary Hicks; and several nieces and nephews.

Rabon L. Hammitt
KINGSPORT - Rabon Lee "Casey" Hammitt, 61, died Sunday evening, Dec. 8, 2002, at his home after an apparent heart attack. Born inWashington County,Va., he had resided in Kingsport most of his life. Mr. Hammitt served four years in the U.S. Army. He was employed with Applied Industrial Technologies where he worked in sales for many years. Mr. Hammitt was a member of First Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory L. Hammitt and Pauline Harrison; and sister, Meta Charlene "Topper" Hammitt.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Bobby Massie, Candler, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tammy Hammitt, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Brittany and Payton Hammitt, Jacob Massie; former wife, Kay Hammtit, Kingsport; stepmother, Edith Hammitt, Gray; two sisters, Nancy Gardner, Weber City and Carol Jones, Kingsport; stepsister, Rita Hammitt, Gray; brother, James Hammitt, Dublin, Ohio; stepbrother, Curtis Hammitt, Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry W. Harris
LEBANON - Larry W. Harris, 42, died on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. He was the beloved father of Christy and Jonathan Harris; and grandfather of Dejia Williams. He was is survived by his father, Mitchell Harris of Honaker; his mother, Mildred Ball of Lebanon; his stepmother, Francis Harris of Honaker; as well as his two brothers, Charles Harris of Abingdon and Mitchell Harris Jr of Kingsport; two sisters, Mary Ann Jessee of Lebanon and Kim Crabtree of Bastian; one niece; and four nephews.
A private family service has been planned.

Jay E. Harville
Jay Edward Harville, 83, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, after a brief illness at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Harville was born in Thorn Hill, Tenn., on Jan. 19, 1919. He received his formal education in the public schools of Rogersville, Tenn., and East Tennessee State University.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport where he was a member of the church choir for many years.
As a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, he served with the Provost Marshall General's Detachment at Fort Custer, Mich. Following his discharge, he was employed the City of Kingsport as assitant city recorder and treasurer. He was the current president of Kingsport Development Co. Insurance, Inc., where he had been an active officer of the company since 1953.
Following World War II, he joined the American Legion. He was a member of Hammond Post 3 Color Guard. At the local level, he served his post as finance officer, Second Vice Commander, First Vice Commander and Commander. He served as the Commander of Hammond Post 3 from 1986 through 2001, as well as two other previous terms. During his time as Commander the Post grew to be one fo the 25 largest posts in the country. At the state level, he served as East Tennesee Vice Commander and the State Department Commander. Also at that level, he was named both Legionaire of the Year and National Executive Committeeman for the Department of Tennessee.
On the national level, he was elected National Vice Commander of the American Legion in 1974 at the 56th Annual National Convention in Miami Beach, Fla. Also on the national level, he was a member of the National Membership and Post Activities Committees for several years. He had also been serving as a member of the National Children and Youth Commission for many years.
He was active in youth activities including scouting, Boys State and Dobyns-Bennett athletics. He served as scoutmaster of the scout troop sponsored by his post for seven years and was active in scouting for 32 years. He was responsible for coordinating the East Tennessee entries for the American Legion Boys State Program as well as the Oratorical Program. He served with the Dobyns-Bennett Athletic Department for over 40 years.
Mr. Harville was active in his community. He was a past president of the Insurors of Kingsport. He was a charter member of the Kingsport Junior Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce from 1991-1993. He was the Parade Marshall of both the Chamber of Commerce Annual Christmas Parade and the American Legion Fourth of July Parade. He also received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Downtown Kingsport Rotary Club.
He was appointed as a member of the State Veterans Nusing Home Board by former Governor Ned McWhertor and re-appiointed by Governor Don Sundquist. He served in this capacity from 1989-2001. During this time, he also served as chairman of the Board for one year.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Spivey Harville; a son, Stephen E. Harville and his wife Cynthia; four grandchildren, Joshua, Jordan, Jaron and Alyssa Harville; one brother, Jerome Harville; one sister, Bertie Steigerwald; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Kingsport. The family will also receive friends at the home of Steve and Cynthia Harville, 3 Spring Creek Wynd, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted at the church onThursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at 7 p.m. with Pastor Marvin Cameron officiating and the eulogy will be given by Dr. Craig Fry. Music will be provided by David Spears.
Graveside services will be Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Hammond Psot 3 Color Guard officiating with Chaplain Joe W.Byrd.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Harville, Jordan Harville, Dr. Mickey H. Spivey, Rick Spivey and Donald Spivey.
