Joe Allen Arnold
Joe Allen Arnold, 62, of 352 Riverview Road, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at his residence. He was an avid fisherman, an outdoorsman and a U.T. fan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the son of the late Spencer and Edna Jones Arnold.
He is survived by his daughter, Kim Turner and husband Steve of San Antonio; son, Keith Arnold of Bristol Tennessee; sister, Wanda Boyd of Marietta, Ga.; and brother, Charlie Arnold of Bristol Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Arnold.
Services will be held 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Niles Kitzmiller officiating. Private burial will be held in Sunrise Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Honorary pallbearers will be Gregg Arnold, Steven Boyd, Chuck Arnold, Mickey Forester, Clayton Arnold, Ronnie Hale, Lewis Hale and Al Groseclose. LEBANON - Anna Ruth Chafin Couch, 67, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at her home in the Spring City Community.
Born May 6, 1935, a daughter of the late Albert Bruce Chafin and Grace Evelyn Little Chafin, she was the wife of Sam C. Couch. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church in Lebanon.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Bryant and Mary Sue Newton.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Sharon Newman, Culpeper, Va., Tammy Raglang and Sandra Houser, both of Lynchburg, Va., and Rhonda Bortzer, Maine; three stepdaughters, Betty Hooker, Bristol Virginia, Kathy Whited, Honaker and Rose Fogleman, Greensboro, N.C.; two stepsons, Allan Couch, Honaker and Larry Couch, Los Angeles; two sisters, Ethel Bryant, Bristol Virginia, and Ada Jean Hall, Castlewood; two brothers, Dewey Chafin, Bedford, Va.,. and Bernard Chafin, Castlewood; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Dave Wright and Mike Cook officiating. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Benny Kantsos, Scott Vase, Landon Whited, Jason Whited, Travis Hooker and Doug Chafin. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Grace B. Edwards
KINGSPORT - Grace Beverly Edwards, 83, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at National Health Care Center, Johnson City.
She was a former resident of Pound and retired from the Wise County School System having taught many years at Pound High School. Mrs. Edwards was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Hamilton Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by her father, William Beverly; her mother and stepfather, Cora Tompkins and Alex Tompkins; and a daughter, Grace Helen Stinson.
Surviving are daughters, Rose Ann Bekhor, Fairfax, Va., and Jonelle Stephens, Kingsport; son, Kerry Edwards, Piney Flats, Tenn.; brothers, Frank Beverly, Moneta, Va.,. Eugene Beverly, Roanoke, Jackie Beverly, Kingsport and Bill Beverly, Dew West, S.C.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and loved ones.
Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18,. 2002, in Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Reverend Greg Cyphers and Reverend Roy Vanover officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap. Vivian V. Herndon
ABINGDON - Vivian Virginia Glovier Herndon, loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, after a long illness.
She was born in Benham, Ky., grew up in Harlan County, Ky., and lived most of her adult life in Abingdon where she was active for many years with BSA, AHS Band, church youth and Wolf Hills Archeological Chapter. She was a former beautician and housewife and was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie S. Herndon.
She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and a lifetime member of The Archeological Society of Virginia.
Surviving are a son, Charlie S. Herndon Jr. and wife Nancy of Abingdon; two daughters, Barbara Lee Price and husband Don of Roanoke and Serita Joy Fay and husband Larry of Mauldin, S.C.; one sister, Mary Jo Hamilton of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two brothers, Delmas (Bo) Glovier and wife Mary Helen of Clinton, Tenn., and J.T. Glovier of Adelphia, Md.; nine grandchildren, James Scott Herndon, Jason Todd Herndon, Jeffry Stowe Herndon, Kenneth Scott Warner, Stephen Warner, David Lance Warner, Don Andrew Price, Lisa Annette Shumate and Laura Lee Kaufman; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, James Scott Herndon, Jason Todd Herndon, Jeffry Stowe Herndon, Kenneth Scott Warner, David Lance Warner, Stephen Warner and Don Andrew Price, and nephew, Fred Alden Herndon.

The committal service and entombment will follow at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Ft. Campbell, Ky. Mr. Horne, 81, of Bristol Tennessee, passed away Sept. 15, 2002, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.

Allen G. Jensen
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Allen George Jensen, 67, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002. Born in Chicago, Mr. Jensen was the son of the late George Peter Borring and Edna Pearl Peterson. Mr. Jensen was a graduate of the University of Illinois, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in finance. He was employed for 27 years as a computer sales manager for Control Data Corporation. An avid golfer and Washington Redskins fan, Mr. Jensen was recently employed at Jackson-Hewitt as an income tax preparer. He was a member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church, Chesapeake.
Mr. Jensen is survived by his wife, Carolyn Henderson Jensen; one daughter, Karen Rodriguez and her husband Carlos of Port Orange, Fla.; two sons, Kent Allen Jensen and his wife Kathy of West Chester, Pa., Michael H. Jensen and his wife Krista of Norfolk; and six grandchildren, Cristy and Carlos Rodriguez and Brigid, Daniel, Megan and Kevin Jensen.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake, with the Rev. Brad Dulaney officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence following the service.

Virginia Harless Foster Love, 77, of 1520 Kentucky Ave., Bristol, Tenn., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Cynthia O. Bentley and had moved to Bristol in 1940 from Shady Valley, Tenn. She was retired from Bristol Lingerie and was a former employee of Big Jack Manufacturing. She was a member of True Faith Tabernacle.
Survivors include: son, Jerry Harless Sr. and wife Jean of the home; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several stepchildren; and two aunts, Letha Bentley and Nora White.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jess Neal and Rev. Jeff Harless officiating. Committal services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will include: Dr. Michael Fletcher and her brothers-in-Christ from True Faith Tabernacle. Douglas K. Merritt
Douglas Kincaid Merritt, 28, of Bristol Virginia, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and had formerly attended State Street Church of Christ. He was a former member of the Boy Scouts and was a Pinewood Derby Champion. Doug was always the outdoorsman.
Survivors include: daughters, Sydney Merritt and Payton Merritt; mother, Sandra Moore and husband Fred of Bristol Virginia; father, Paul D. Merritt and wife Jo of Bristol Tennessee; sisters, Jessica and husband Harvy Stanley of Bristol Virginia, and Alisa Merritt of Bristol Tennessee; brother, Chad and wife Kerry Merritt of Sulphur Springs, Tenn.; special grandparents, Arizona and Bernard Scott of Bristol Virginia, and Ethel Merritt of Bristol Virginia; special uncle, Charles Scott of Bristol Tennessee; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Goldie May Phillips
COEBURN - Goldie May Dotson Phillips, 93, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Richfield Nursing Facility in Salem, Va.
Mrs. Phillips was a native of Wise and Dickenson County but had lived with a grandson, Charles Mays in Elliston, Va. for the past couple of years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Phillips; her first husband, Willard N. Dotson; her parents, Blaine and Fannie Mullins Lee; a son, Dexter Dotson; daughters, Mattie Lambert and Sondra Dotson; sisters, Margaret Yager and Bessie Stull; and brother, Chester Lee, Arthur Lee and Thedore Lee.
Survivors include two daughters, Erma Nixon, Greenfield, Ind., and Trula Wright, Abingdon; two sons, Cornell Dotson, Wellington, Ohio, and Wilmer Dotson, New London, Ohio; a sister, Ida Cassimus, Arlington, Texas; a brother, Junior Hamilton, Coeburn; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and several nieces.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Estes Funeral Home with Rev. Kyle Rose officiating. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. Visitation will be held at Estes Funeral Home on Wednesday after 6 p.m.

ARLINGTON, Va. - Mrs. Barbara A. Richey, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at her home. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Keesee.
Survivors: her beloved husband, Stephen O. Richey Jr., Arlington; three daughters, Theresa Ogle, Arlington, Diana Myrah, Vienna, Va.,. and Michelle Rimel, Vienna; one son, Stephen Richey III, Falls Church, Va.; three sisters, Jean Blevins, Saltville, Mildred Norris, Glade Spring and Edwina Keesee, Chilhowie; and 10 grandchildren.

Frederick H. Smith
SALEM, Va. - Frederick Howell (Hal) Smith, 57, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. He was born in Damascus, Va., and had went on to retire from the U.S. Postal Service where he had worked as an express mail manager. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and with the Air Police at Patrick Air Force Base in Melbourne, Fla. He was also a member of Boones Mill Baptist Church and had a great love fro hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He had a dedicated passion for his yard work. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Hattie Smith, and a brother, Eugene Smith.
Surviving family includes his wife, Darlene Marie Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Lauren Ashley Link, Kelli Smith, Jason Mundy and Terri and Josef Kiesenhofer; grandchildren, Jena and Jessica Mundy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen and Ruth Smith, Paul and Donna Smith and Larry and Retha Smith; and a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" and Richard Barr.

NORTON - Jonah Stidham, 92, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at the home of his brother in Tacoma, Va. Mr. Stidham retired from Stonega Coal & Coke Co. and was a member of the UMWA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearlie Mae Johnson Stidham. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving: daughter, Nancy Sue Herron, Chesterfield, Va.; stepdaughter, Charlotte Tindall, Chesterfield; brother, Henderson Stidham, Tacoma, Va.; four half sisters, Lula Sturgill, Coeburn, Shirley Dotson, Wise, Thelma Binkley, Montgomery, Ill., and Ollie Sparks, Gunthersville, Ala.; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Gail Sturgill.

ABINGDON - Mrs. Margaret F. Wagner, 90, of 23381 Walden Road, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. Mrs. Wagner was born on Aug. 20, 1912, in Washington County and was the widow of W. Maiden Wagner Sr.
She is survived by her sons, William M. Wagner Jr. and wife Marliene R. Wagner of Pulaski and Jim K. Wagner and fiancee, Louise Boldue of Yorktown, Va.; her grandchildren, Nicole L. Wagner of Richmond, Jill W. Shirtz and husband Jason of Greenville, N.C., Greg Wagner of Yorktown; a great-grandson, Tyler Shirtz of Greenville; a sister, Virginia F. Shockley of Abingdon; a brother, Lonzo Flannagan and wife Jane of Abingdon; several nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Taylor Allison; and his parents, William and Vivian Allison. He was a retired employee of Marley Mouldings, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Saltville V.F.W. Post 7328.
