Goldie May Phillips
COEBURN - Goldie May Dotson Phillips, 93, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Richfield Nursing Facility in Salem, Va.
Mrs. Phillips was a native of Wise and Dickenson County but had lived with a grandson, Charles Mays in Elliston, Va. for the past couple of years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Phillips; her first husband, Willard N. Dotson; her parents, Blaine and Fannie Mullins Lee; a son, Dexter Dotson; daughters, Mattie Lambert and Sondra Dotson; sisters, Margaret Yager and Bessie Stull; and brothers, Chester Lee, Arthur Lee, Thedore Lee and Earl Lee.
Survivors include two daughters, Erma Nixon, Greenfield, Ind., and Trula Wright, Abingdon; two sons, Cornell Dotson, Wellington, Ohio, and Wilmer Dotson, New London, Ohio; a sister, Ida Cassimus, Arlington, Texas; a brother, Junior Hamilton, Coeburn; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and several nieces.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Estes Funeral Home with Rev. Kyle Rose officiating. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.

ARLINGTON, Va. - Graveside services for Ms. Barbara A. Richey will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Mount Rose Cemetery with Father Rene Castillo officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Capital Kidney Foundation.
Mrs. Richey, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at her home.

Elmer Wagner
PILGRIM KNOB, Va. - Mr. Elmer (Ray) Wagner, 64, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, in a Kingsport hospital following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Alvis and Rose Mullins Wagner. He was a member of the Flatwood Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Wagner.
Mr. Wagner is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Riffe Wagner of the home; one son, Rodney Wagner and wife Lesa of Compton Mountain, Va.; one granddaughter, Katrina Wagner of Compton Mountain; two brothers, Donald Wagner and Willard Wagner, both of Compton Mountain; and two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Erma) Cantrell and Mrs. Ronald (Bonnie) Childress, both of Compton Mountain.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va., with Evangelist Michael Trent, Dennis Wimmer, Ancil Childress, and Clarence Herron officiating. Burial will follow in the Wagner & Mullins Cemetery on Compton Mountain. Pallbearers will be James Riffe, Zack Riffe and nephews.

CHATTANOOGA - Mr. John Frank Barrett, 58, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Memorial Hospital, Chattanooga.
He was a graduate of Greendale High School and served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. John owned and operated Barrific Arena and Stables in Dayton, Tenn., and attended Gravesville Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Roscoe Barrett and Annie Gertrude Barrett; sisters Fannie Stevens and Carlene Barrett; and a brother, Carl Barrett.
Survivors include his wife, Patty Barrett; a son, John Barrett II of Crossville, Tenn.; two daughters, Jennifer Barrett of Crossville and Leigh Johnson of Fayetteville, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Angie Whinnery of Nashville and Tonya Trussell of States Berry, Ga.; four grandchildren; five brothers, Larry Barrett and Mike Barrett, both of Abingdon, Gerald Barrett of Saltville, James Robert Barrett of Nokesville, Va., and Clarence Barrett of Salisbury, Md.; seven sisters, Julie Roark, Barbara Armstrong, Carolyn Davis, Linda Roark and Patsy Powers, all of Abingdon, Josie Parker of Hayter's Gap, Va., and Mary Quinn of Biloxi, Miss.

Ruth E. Biggers
EMORY - Ruth Evans Biggers passed away early on the morning of Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Ruth was for many years a professor in the mathematics department at Emory & Henry College, where she is remembered with great fondness by former students and associates. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Biggers and Louise Gesner.
She is survived by a niece, Ruth Gesner of Freeport, Texas; and two nephews, Marshall Gesner of Tulsa, Okla., and Eugene Gesner of Port Charlotte, Fla. Ruth was a faithful member of Emory United Methodist Church on the campus of Emory & Henry College. There will be a memorial service at Emory United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002.

William R. Calloway
William Ray Calloway, 48, of 6071 Rich Valley Road, Bristol, Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House.
Mr. Calloway was a native of Avery County, N.C. but had spent the past 32 1/2 years in the Bristol area. He was an employee of Bristol Compressors with 20 years of service and a member of Lime Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Lisa Hatfield of Salem, Patsy Hall of Bristol Virginia and Laverne Lucas of Elkton, Va.; one brother, Ellis Hall of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplin Carl Young and Rev. Fred Jackson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in Big Meadow Cemetery, Avery County. Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Browning. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.

CARLISLE, Pa. - Mr. James R. Colley, 90, died Dec. 5, 2002.
He had lived in Washington and Smyth counties and was a son of the late Tom and Georgia Colley.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Colley; two daughters, Alice Faye Colley of the home and Mrs. Sonny (Nancy) Taylor of Deland, Fla.; two brothers, Denton Colley of Aurora, Colo., and Wyndham Colley of Pasadena, Md.; three sisters, Mrs. Woody (Celestia) Kawha of Chilhowie, Janie Allison of Saltville and Mrs. Lee (Eleanor) Holmes of Saltville; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in Carlisle.

Carson H. Furrow, 90, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in Bristol Nursing Home.
He was former vice-president, secretary and treasurer of the Sotheast Group of United Telecommunications. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and a past member of the Rotary Club of Bristol and other civic and business associations. He was a veteran of World War II and was preceded in death by his wife, Irene D. Furrow.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A private funeral service will be held.

MEMPHIS - C.W. "Bud" Greer, 70, of 2421 Brookmeade went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Methodist Hospital. He was born inWashington County, Va., on Feb. 17, 1932, a son of the late Conley and Addie Johnson Greer.
A former resident of Damascus, Mr. Greer had made his home in Memphis for the past 20 years. He was of the Baptist faith and a retired construction worker.
Survivors incldue two sisters, Lois Miller of Ocala, Fla., and Leona Swoap of Bell, Fla.; three brothers, Blaine Greer of Jacksonville, Fla., Everett Greer of Ocala and Gene Greer of Mile City, Mont.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

COEBURN - Mary W. "Renie" Hamm, 88, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Riverside Nursing Home in Saluda, Va.
Mrs. Hamm was a retired employee of VIC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Hamm; her parents, Alex and Cynthia Johnson Long; daughter, Joann Meadows; brothers William "Bill" Long, Vic Long, Buford Long and Alden Long; sisters Frances Cassell, Monnie Rogers and Ruby Dale; grandson, Michael Meadows; and great-granddaughter, Candy McCoy.
Survivors include sons Jack Hamm of Kingsport and Kyle Hamm of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; grandson raised as a son, Danny McCoy of Coeburn; daughters, Lu Shaw of Perry, Va., Jean Sartin of Coeburn and Lois Hussey of Minnifee, Calif.; special great-granddaughter, Amanda Daughtery of Coeburn; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in McClellan Cemetery on Sandy Ridge. Visitation will be held at Estes Funeral Home Monday after 4 p.m.
Robert E. Harman Jr.
MARION - Robert Elmer Harman Jr., 55, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at home. He attended Marion Church of God. He was born in Mingo County, W.Va., and moved to Virginia in the 1960s. Mr. Harman graduated from Marion College in 1967, and spent most of his adult life in the Los Angeles area, moving back to Marion in 2000. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Elmer Harman Sr.; and one sister, Becky Ball. He is survived by one daughter, Gigi Spiegel of Los Angeles; three sons, Robert Harman and John Harman, both of Richmond, and Greg Harman of Gettysburg, Pa.; his mother, Margie Harman of Marion; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Bunni Ellison and Martha and Curt Marchus, all of Marion; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Jerry Alley officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. Ruth R. Kerr
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mrs. Ruth Miller Readling Kerr died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Loris Extended Care, Loris, S.C.
She was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Concord, N.C., a daughter of the late Joseph U. and Alice Miller Readling. She and her family made their home in the Bristol area for 33 years before she and her husband moved to North Myrtle Beach in 2000 to live with her daughter Karen and her family.
Mrs. Kerr spent most of her life being a loving pastor's wife and a mother to her children. And she did secretarial/bookkeeping work.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Dewey W. Kerr of North Myrtle Beach; a son, Joseph C. Kerr and his wife, Pamela, of Bristol Virginia; two daughters, Karen K. Hart and her husband, Steve, of North Myrtle Beach and Cheryl K. Inscore and her husband, Paul, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; and two brothers, Ronald Readling and wife, Brenda, of Kannapolis, N.C., and Donald Readling and wife, Brenda, of Stanfield, N.C. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Shawn K. Kerr and wife, Megan Nicole, Meredith L. Hart, Rachel K. Kerr and Joshua N. Inscore.
Funeral services will be Monday at 7 p.m. in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Stancil officiating. Burial will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in Mountain View Cemetery. KENT, Ohio - Mrs. Billie C. Louthen Long, 72, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at home.
Born in Saltville, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Myrtle Poore Louthen.
Surviving are her husband, Lee H. Long; one daughter, Cathy Kordinak of Kent; one son, Donald Brown of Houston; one brother, Tommy Louthen of Saltville; three sisters, Salona Gibson and June Dalbow of Kent and Thelma Powell of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two granddaughters; and one grandson.
Funeral and burial will be Dec. 9, 2002, in Kent.
