George Lee Boy Jr.
George Lee Boy Jr., 76, of Bristol Virginia, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Boy was a native of Bristol Tennessee and had spent several years in Chicago and Edison, N.J., and moved back to Bristol in 1988. He worked for Western Electric and retired from AT&T. He was active in the Boy Scouts and had served as scout master in Edison. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran where he served with the 418 Night Fighter Squadron. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Frances Boy; and a brother, Joseph Boy of Knoxville. He was a member of the Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Steven Boy of Edison and Jeffrey Boy of Schenectady, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tony Collins officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in the Shelby Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Flora Church
GRUNDY - Flora Church, 84 years of age, passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Grundy. Born in Buchanan County, Oct. 9, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Milton B. Ward and Sarah Stacy Ward. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Vansant Church of Christ and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gallie Church; one daughter, Patty Church; one son, Jackie Dean Church; five sisters; and four brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Ann Church and husband, William (Bill) of Grundy; four sons, Bobby Church and wife Carol of Abingdon, James (Jim) Church and wife Tippy, Danny Ray Church and wife Barbara and William David Church and wife Lisa, all of Grundy; one sister, Birdie Slone of Grundy; 11 grandchildren, Karen Dales, Leslie Stacy, Michael Church, Brad Hurley, Shannon Church, Steven Cory Church, Matthew Church, Tammy L. Ramey, Cody Church, Caleb Church and Chynna Rose Church; six great-grandchildren, Garrett Dales, Richelle Stacy, Derrick Stacy, Robert Canaan Ramey, Haley Church and Kacie Nichole Church; one great-great-grandchild , Kaylee Grace Robinett; four step-grandchildren, Jason Dales, Eric Sullivan, Gary Cooper and Cody McSwain Church; one foster-granddaughter, Darcy Coleman. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, some of whom made their home with her.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelists Mike Rife, Michael Trent and Reverend Ancil Childress officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va.
Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be nursing staff on Third, Fourth and ICU Unit of Buchanan General Hospital, nursing staff of Heritage Hall Nursing Home of Grundy, Jean Deel, Madonna Cliston, Dr. J.G. Patel, Dr. J.N. Patel and Dr. John Starynski.
The body will be left at the funeral home where friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening with services Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

BLUFF CITY - Patti Kay McNew DePew, age 41, passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Bristol Tennessee, and had lived in Bristol and Johnson City before moving to Bluff City. She was a member of the Fountain of Life Bible Church. Patti was preceded in death by a brother, Danny McNew.
She is survived by her fiancÈ, Andy Adams of Bluff City; her parents, Claude and Eleanor McNew of Bristol Virginia; a stepdaughter, Sarah DePew of Kingsport; three brothers, Jack McNew of Harriman, Tenn., Fred McNew of Gray, Tenn., and Tom McNew of Kingsport; three sisters, Susie Rhudy of Kingsport and Betty Lou Kistner and Robin Owens, both of Bristol Virginia; several nieces and nephews, including special great-nieces and great-nephew, Logan Cross, Kailee Cross and Gracie Blount.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 6 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Michael Patterson officiating. A committal service will be held Thursday at noon in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Family and friends are to meet at the cemetery before the service on Thursday.

Grace D. Godsey
Grace Darrell Meade Godsey, 83, of Bristol Tennessee, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Born in Hansonville, Va., on Nov. 4, 1919, a daughter of the late W.O. and Grace Chafin Meade, she has resided in this area her entire life.
Mrs. Godsey was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and sister.
Mrs. Godsey was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Meade, in 1994; and one sister, Peggy Meade Roof in 1999.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Ivan I. Godsey of the home; one son, Richard Godsey and wife, Patricia of Knoxville; two sisters, Joanna Cross of Bristol Virginia, and Nita Hagler of Bristol Tennessee; nephews, Jackie Meade, John Meade, Phillip Hagler, Bill Cross and Jerry Cross; and nieces, Gail Ligon and Sharon Shelton.
Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery.
Niles E. Kitzmiller will officiate.
Interment will be in Shelby Hills Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Darrel Shelton, Jerry Cross, Phillip Hagler, Johnny Meade, Jackie Meade, Edward Roof, Bill Cross and Mike Semones.

LEESVILLE, La. - Robert G. "J-Hi" Hill, age 41, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24,2002, in Byrd Regional Hospital following an automobile accident. A native of Dickenson County, he was a son of Faye H. Harvey of Birchleaf, Va., and Bobby Joe Hill of Leesville. He was a disabled carpenter.
In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by his wife, Solena Hill of Anacoco, La.; a daughter, Shana Hill, and a son, Bobby Hill, both of Port Deposit, Md.; three stepchildren, Kenny Ferguson, Frankie Myres and Laverne Myres, all of Anacoco; three sisters, Tammy Boyd of Abingdon, Renida Bowman of Birchleaf and Bobbie J. Tyson of Leesville; three stepsisters, April McKellar, Diane Hillerio and Barbara Smithson; four stepbrothers, Junior Newcomb, Jeffery Newcomb, Gerald Harvey and Jeff Harvey; his maternal grandmother, Agnes Green Hall of Clintwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Haysi Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Gary Hill officiating. A graveside service will be Friday at noon at the J.C. Fleming Cemetery at Hill Ridge, Route 1, Clintwood. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. KINGSPORT - Willie Kate Ramey Laughlin 84, of Adaline St., went peacefully to her Heavenly home, after an extended illness on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Indian Path Medical Center. She was a native of Scott County, a homemaker and a charter member of Gardeners Chapel Primitive Church.
She was preceded by husband, Lindsay N. Laughlin; grandson, Brian Laughlin; parents, Isaac (Ike) and Sara (Tiny) daughter-in-law, Donna Laughlin; sisters, Elsie Huffman and Viola McMurray; and brothers, Werden, Ingle, Albert and Ervin Ramey.
She is survived by Mrs. Shirley McMurray, Hiltons, Va., and Ms. Lou McMurray, Bristol; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie Laughlin, Church Hill, Tenn., Leroy and Linda Laughlin, Bristol and Darrell and Patsy Laughlin of Kingsport; sisters, Beulah Laughlin, Blountville and Elva Harkleroad, Kingsport; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Scott County Funeral Home and any time at the residence. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Gardeners Chapel Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Clarence Huffman, Elder Gerald Hopkins and Elder Roger Smith officiating. ABINGDON - Mrs. Wanda Faye Stroup Litton, 61, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at her home. She was born in Mendota, Va., and had lived in several areas before moving back to Washington County in 1980. She formerly worked at the Barter Theatre before her sickness.
She is survived by three sons, Robert D. Martin of Abingdon, Jeffery K. Martin of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Jason D. Martin and wife, Jennifer of Bristol Tennessee; one daughter, Paige Martin of Abingdon; stepson, Garry Litton of Hayters Gap, Va.; stepdaughter, Connie Reynolds of Hayter's Gap; two brothers, Jesse (Chub) Stroup of Mendota and Ronnie (Bo) Stroup of Bristol Virginia; one sister, Gloria (Chic) Epes, Ledyard, Conn.; three grandsons; two step-granddaughters; a special niece, Belinda Stroup; and special friends, Ernest Blevins and Hank Pennington.
A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Hendricks Cemetery with Rev. Oscar Edwards officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. MARION - Betty Lee Maiden Moore, age 66, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Virgil and Mae Maiden and was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Harvey Moore; a sister, Sharon Maiden Mason; and a brother, Billy Wayne Maiden. She was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and was retired from Food Lion.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana Lee and Joseph Leslie Crouse, Chilhowie and Karen Lynn and Jimmy Trail, Catawba; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Johnny Harvey Moore, Marion and Ronnie Frank and Nancy Ann Moore, Marion; six sisters, Mildred Earnest, Marion, Margaret Johnson, Marion, Shirley Blevins, Marion, Mary Kellam, Decatur, Ala, Linda Maiden, Decatur and Joyce Cofield, Valdosta, Ga.; four brothers, Kenneth Maiden, Marion, Earnest Maiden, Elkins, W.Va., Everette Maiden, Port St. Joe, Fla., and Dean Maiden, Clarksville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Serena Bowers, Shannon Trail, Tony Moore, Kristy Moore, Michael Moore, Chris Moore and Kevin Trail; two great-grandchildren, Kendra Moore and Hunter Bowers; special friend and adopted sister, Lola Bumgarner; and many nieces and nephews.

CASTLEWOOD - Maridelle Porter, 75, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Grace Healthcare Nursing Home in Abingdon.
She was born in Castlewood and was the daughter of the late Everett and Alice Henderson Fields.
She was a retired medical technologist of Lebanon General Hospital. She was a member of Fort Gibson United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Porter III.
She is survived by one son, John L. Porter IV and wife, Georgia of Bluff City; two grandchildren, Travis Porter and Ashley Porter; one brother, William Fields and wife Rama of Gainesville, Fla.; special friend, Polly Church of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Pallbearers will be men from Fort Gibson United Methodist Church.

Thomas Pruitt Jr.
BIG ROCK, Va. - Thomas Pruitt Jr., 77 years of age, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Boone County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Pruitt and Frances Porter Pruitt Combs. He was a long time resident of Buchanan County moving here from War, W.Va., when Harman Mining Company began it's operations on Bull Creek in the 1930's. He served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Assigned to the PBY Catalina Flying Service, his primary duty was search and rescue. He was discharged following wounds he received in the retaking of the Philippine Islands. In the years following the war, he became a successful coal operator and businessman and he was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Big Rock.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruby Irene Falke Pruitt; their children, Lou Annette Sinclair wife of James J. Sinclair of Hampton, Va., Glenna Carol Cantrell wife of Clen Daniel Cantrell of Big Rock, Thomas L. Pruitt husband of Nancy McSherry Pruitt of Grundy and Catherine Lynn Leonard wife of Michael D. Leonard of Belfast, Va.; six granddaughters, Leslie Sinclair, Amber Leonard Musick, Melinda Shane Cantrell, Ashley Leonard Hicks, Jacqueline Frances Pruitt and Amanda Leigh Pruitt; three grandsons, James Jefferson Sinclair, Michael Elijah Leonard and John Thomas Pruitt; one great-grandson, Draven Knight Vicars; two nephews, Ronnie Hicks of North Tazewell, Va., and Ted Hicks of Grundy; and one brother-in-law, Donald Fred Falke of Newport News, Va.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Minnie (Mooch) Hicks.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ, Big Rock. The memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Evangelists Michael Trent, Bob Smith and Sam Casebolt officiating with graveside services with full military rites conducted at the cemetery by members of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
His pallbearer will be his grandson, Elijah Leonard, airman, USAF.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Big Rock Church of Christ.

Hal H. Smith
Hal H. Smith, age 85, died Nov. 19, 2002, at Westminster-Thurber Retirement Community. He retired in 1982 from East Tennessee State University where he served as head librarian and microfilms librarian for 34 years. Before coming to E.T.S.U. he worked at the New York Public Library, University of Chicago Library and served as director of the Warton American Technical School Library, which was operated for GI's by the U.S. Army in England. He was a 1941 graduate of Berea College and later earned two professional degrees at the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago. During 4 1/2 years in World War II , he served as an Army Warrant Officer with the First Coast Artillery in Panama and the Signal Corps, Medical Corps and Special Services in Europe. His professional memberships and activities were in the American Library Association, the Association of College and University Libraries, state and regional library associations, Phi Delta Kappa and American Association of University Professors. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, Tenn., for many years where he served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, steward, trustee and on various church boards, commissions and councils. He served as president of the Washington County Retired Teacher's Association for two years in Tennessee. He was born and reared in Bristol Tennessee, to William David and Mattie Randolph Smith. Survived by: wife, Florence Muelder Smith; daughters, Ruth Smith of Worchester, Mass., Carol Smith of Falls Church, Va.,. and Judith Smith-Bechtel of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City or to the East Tennessee State University Library. He donated his body to The Ohio State University School of Medicine for medical research. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
