Virgil McMurray
HILTONS, Va. - Virgil Paul McMurray, 81, went to be with the Lord Wednsday, April 24, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Virgil was a lifelong resident of Scott County. He was a rural mail carrier in the Hiltons area for several yars. He was retired from the Scott County Sheriff's Department, where he served from Jan. 1, 1972, to Dec. 31, 1986. He and his wife, Gladys, enjoyed many years in their country store in Hiltons.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Walker and Hester McMurray; brothers Frank McMurray, Rhea McMurray, Eugene McMurray, the Rev. Grady McMurray and Herschel McMurray; and sister, Ollie McMurray.
Virgil is survived by his faithful, loving wife of 59 years, Gladys McMurray; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sheila McMurray of Grundy; daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Fred Vicars of Bristol, Va., Mavis and Bill Hatton of Kingsport and Patsy and Jerry Larkey of Bristol, Va..; brother Junior McMurray of Blountville; sister Ruby McMurray of Kingsport; grandchildren Jason McMurray, Michael and wife, Amy Vicars, and Lori Ann and husband, Travis Sauls; step-grandchildren Teresa Tabor and Lynn Linkous; great-grandchildren, Seth and Caleb Tabor and Kayla and Mandi Linkous; and several nieces and nephews who he loved as his own.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Scott County Funeral Home and any time at the residence. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2002, in the funeral home chapel with pastor Buford Blankenbeckler and Elder Johnny Bowlin officiating with eulogy by Jim Bowlin. Music will be by the Bowlin Family. Pallbearers will be Darrell McMurray, Greg McMurray, Bill Hilton, Jim Bowlin, James McMurray, Neal Hensley, Marvin Gardner and Eugene Blaylock. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Pendleton, Dr. James Schrenker, Ross Bright, Lawrence Carter, Charlie Smith, Roger Loepp, Clyde Gardner, Russell Fraizer, Harry Warren, W.C. McMurray, Pete Taylor, Howard McMurray, Cornelius McMurray, Garney Gillenwater, Woodrow McMurray, Harlan Hobbs, Chris Hurley, the Rev. Dewey Shaffer, the Rev. I.W. McNamara and nephews and grandsons.

James O. McReynolds
COEBURN - James Ora McReynolds, 85, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Carrie Chaffin McReynolds; seven brothers, Cowan McReynolds, Will McReynolds, Elmer McReynolds, Robert McReynolds, Everette McReynolds, Gilmer McReynolds and Claude McReynolds; and four sisters, Mabel Crawford, Maggie Vaughn, Audrey Maness and Ethel McReynolds.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dane and Nancy Tickles of Coeburn, Tony and Rhonda Tickles of Colonial Heights, Tenn., and Randy and Lana Tickles of Wise; four grandsons, Isaac Tickles of Coeburn, Steven Tickles of the U.S. Air Force, Corey Tickles of Colonial Heights and Mackie Tickles of Wise; two granddaughters, Crystal Motz and Kendra Tickles, both of Wise, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glen Hammacker officiating and music furnished by his nephews, Jim and Jesse McReynolds. Burial will follow in Addington-Pippin Cemetery in Coeburn. Visitation will be held at Estes Fuenral Home Friday after 5 p.m.

Sylvia B. Miller
Sylvia B. Miller, 82, of 202 Second Ave., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the Hospice House. She was born Aug. 26, 1919, in Shady Valley, a daughter of the late Martin and Dora Stansberry Tolliver, and had lived most of her adult life in Bristol. Mrs. Miller was the widow of Dale G. Miller and was preceded in death by her sisters Hazel Wright and Ruth Lovell; and a brother, Calvin Tolliver.
Survivors include her children Donald Miller and wife, Francis, of Crossville, Tenn., Bobby W. Miller and wife, Darla Jean, of Bluff City, Brenda Miller Schlobohm of Blountville and Dennis Miller of Bristol; three brothers, Glenn Tolliver, Earl Tolliver and wife, Joanne, of Bristol, Tenn., and Raymond Tolliver and wife, Lorella, of Shady Valley; a sister, Stella Tolliver Payne and husband, Earl, of Mountain City, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; also a lifelong special friend, Lois Lemon of Bristol, Tenn.
Special thanks to Beckie and Dale Miller and the staff of Wellmont Hospice House.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 26, 2002, at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cass Farrior officiating. Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Friday at Weaver Funeral Home.

John H. Nipper
RUSSELL COUNTY - John H. Nipper, 74, of the Belfast community died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

Blane Eugene Parks
The funeral service for Blane Eugene Parks will be conducted at 11 o'clock Friday morning in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Mountain View Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Carico officiating. Burial will follow.
Mr. Parks, 73, of 1104 Rhode Island Ave., Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, April 23, 2002.

Rev. E.C. Price
DORAN, Va. - Rev. E.C. Price, 85, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at a Richlands hosopital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Logan, W.Va., and was a son of the late Preston M. and Clara Estep Price, both West Virginia natives. He grew up in Barrett, W.Va., and graduated from Van High School in Van, W.Va. He was foreman for Eastern Gas & Fuel Co. in Fayetteville County, W.Va., moved to Russell County, Va., in 1945, and was former co-owner of Preston Mining Co. and co-owner of Price Brothers Coal Co. He later became the first manager of Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleums at Claypool Hill, Va. He was ordained a minister in the Wesleyan Church in Roanoke in 1948, and shortly thereafter founded Doran Wesleyan Church at Doran. He continued to pastor the church for a number of years. He was a past-president of Raven Elementary P.T.A., Richlands Ministerial Association and former chaplain for the Civil Air Patrol at Doran. He loved to play golf and travel and was an avid pilot.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Paul D. Price; one sister, Jewell Hurst; one granddaughter, Shelia Foster; and two grandsons, Preston M. Price II and Benjamin Foster.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Thelma Pauline Kirk Price; three daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Bernard Simmons of Bristol, Va., Lois and Emory Salyer of Raven, Va., and Lorraine and Dude Foster of Doran; two sons and daughter-in-law, P.M. and Doris Price of Sugar Grove, Va., and Ernie Price of Doran; other daughter-in-law, Delores Price of Richlands; three sisters, Doris Lane of Barrett, W.Va., Nina Walton of Barrett and Janet Vickers of Barrett; two brothers, C.M. Price of Doran and Coy H. Price of Barrett; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Bud Fugate and Dr. Charles Massey officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be William Simmons, Bryan Simmons, Tim Salyers, Henry Foster III, David Price II and E.W. Griffith III. Honorary pallbearers will be Rod Cury, Don Meadows, George Smith, Dr. H.H. McVey and men of Doran Wesleyan Church. Betty Grace Repass
Betty Smith Grace Repass, 74, of Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 25, 2002. She was born inWar, W.Va., the daughter of the late Arthur Grace and Mabel Grace Troy and lived most of her childhood in Tannersville, Va. She spent all of her adult life in Bristol, Va. She was retired from Raytheon and was a member of Little Valley Christian Church inTannersville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Hammitt E. Smith; and her brother, Wallace Tyler Grace.
Betty is survived by her children, Mickey Smith of Bristol, Va., Donna Lindsey of Ashland, Miss., and Danny Smith of Bristol, Va.; her sister, Mabel Lamie of Bristol, Va.; her grandchildren, Michael Smith, Leslie Barker, Trisha Shipley, Leigh Anne Smith, Rain Smith, Lacey Smith and Leif Smith; her great-grandson, Logan Smith; nephew, Scott Lamie; a great-niece and great-nephew, Kristen and Lee Moore.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dan Little officiating. Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at a family cemetery in Tannersville. Honorary pallbearers include Rain Smith, Leif Smith, Michael Smith, Pete Lamie, Johnny Spradlyn and Guy Odum. Thomas Wiley Tindell
Thomas Wiley (PaPaw) Tindell, 83, went home to be with his Lord, April 24, 2002. Mr. Tindell was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucille; and an infant son, Thomas. He was a retired coal miner and electrician who worked for Westmoreland Coal Co. for many years. He and his wife were former owners and operators of The Parks Motel in Clifton Forge, Va., before retiring to the Abingdon area. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had spent many wonderful and memorable days doing both with friends and most especially his two grandsons, Tom and Scott Goodpasture, and close friend, Doug Hall of Pulaski, Va. Mr. Tindell was a member of Holston Valley Baptist Church, Cleveland Road, Abingdon. Although unable to attend the last year, he had many friends and neighbors with whom he enjoyed fellowship. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a Mason.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Dick Goodpasture of Bristol, Va.; two grandsons, Richard (Tom) Goodpasture and wife, Melanie, of Ashland, Va., and Willard Scott Goodpasture of Knoxville; a precious great-granddaughter, Grace Goodpasture of Ashland; a half-sister, Mary Lou Gregg of Chicago; and a first cousin, Ada Lee Robinson of Auburn, Ind.
A funeral service will be held Friday, April 26, 2002, at 6:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Ketron officiating. A committal service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap. The family will receive friends following the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Tom Goodpasture, Scott Goodpasture, Doug Hall, Howard Poe, Boyd Poe, William R. Jones and Pete Hubbard. A very special thanks is extended to Dr. Doug Green for his love and care of Mr. Tindell during the past four years. Goldie C. Baisden
RICHLANDS - Mrs. Goldie Clark Baisden, 71, of 7 South Farmer St. died Friday, May 24, 2002, at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Mingo County, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Major Craig and Florence Evans Clark Jr., both West Virginia natives.
She had made her home in the Richlands area the past 36 years and was of the Church of God faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Ewell E. Baisden and one son, Charles Edward Baisden.
Survivors are one daughter, Ms. Sharon Gail Baisden of Richlands; three sons, Mr. Walter Ewell Baisden and wife, Sandra, of Pounding Mill, Mr. Rodney Dale Baisden and wife, Leslie, of North Carolina, and Mr. Major Lee Baisden and wife, Ethel Marie, of Raven; two sisters, Mrs. Shirley Ooten of Huntington, W.Va., and Mrs. Sarah DeBord of Holden, W.Va.; one brother, Mr. James Harold Clark of North Carolina; 16 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Charlie McGlothlin and Rev. Buddy Herald officiating. Ruth Bowers
Mrs. Ruth Johnson "Toots" Bowers, 66, of 1116 Bristol Caverns Highway, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, April 23, 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House. She was a native of Sullivan County, and a daughter of the late Hurst and Sarah Rogers Johnson. She was a retired employee of Smith-Kline Beecham and a member of The Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Bowers; and daughter and son-in-law Gail and Jerry Miller of Bristol, Tenn.
Funeral services will be conducted 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Rowlett and Rev. Howard Campbell officiating. Arlie R. Bowman
PINEY FLATS - Arlie Ray Bowman, 33, of 345 Spangler Road Lot 7 passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tenn.
Born Oct. 2, 1969, in Sullivan County, a son of William R. Bowman of Blountville and the late Linda Williams Bowman, he has resided in this area all of his life.
Mr. Bowman was a lighting technician working with K-VA-T Food Stores.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Bowman was a fireman serving with the Sullivan County Volunteer Fire Department.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, son and brother who loved fishing, the Volunteer Fire Department and his work.
Mr. Bowman is survived by his wife of four years, Sherry Gibson Bowman of the home; his father, William R. Bowman Sr. of Blountville; one sister, Teresa Whitaker of Bristol, Tenn.; two brothers, William R. Bowman Jr. and wife, Freda, of Blountville and Brian Keith Bowman of Blountville; three nieces; one nephew; and one great-nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Larry Hall and the Rev. Gene Hammond will officiate.
Burial will follow graveside services at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, in Crumley Cemetery with full firefighter rites accorded by the Sullivan County Volunteer Fire Department.
Pallbearers will be Chief Brad Tate, Assistant Chief Chad Brooks Sr., Capt. Wendell Clark, Capt. Eric Wilson Sr., Lt. Rusty Scott and Lt. Charlie Owens.
Honorary pallbearers will be William R. Bowman Sr., William R. Bowman Jr. and Brian Keith Bowman.
Family, friends and firefighters will assemble at the funeral home by 1 p.m. Sunday and then proceed to the cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Edward E. Duncan
ERWIN - Rev. Edward E. "Gene" Duncan, 75, of 953 N. Elm St. died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Rev. Duncan was a Unicoi County native and had lived in Kentucky before returning to Erwin in 1978. He was a son of the late Jacob Nathaniel and Ollie Scarbrough Duncan. Rev. Duncan was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific. He was a recipient of the Victory Medal, the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, The Sharp Shooters and the Good Conduct Medal. Rev. Duncan retired as a Southern Baptist minister in 1989, having served for 41 years at various churches in the Kentucky and Tennessee regions. He was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a deacon and a choir member. Rev. Duncan was a member of The Order of Silver Trowel, past chaplain of the Appalachian District Civitan Club and The Jerico Shrine. He was Past Master of the Centennial Lodge 491 and a member of the Unaka Council Cryptic Masons 0120. Rev. Duncan was past president of the Unicoi County Shrine Club and a member of the Royal Arch Masons, the Watauga Commandery 0025 of Johnson City and a Super Master Mason. Rev. Duncan was also a member of the Charles Newton Bush Past Masters Associaton of East Tennessee.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant brother and one infant sister.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Larimer Duncan of the home; daughter Mary Elizabeth Jones of Johnson City; three brothers, Charles William Duncan, Robert Earnest Duncan and James Earl Duncan, all of Erwin; five sisters, Evelyn Marie Mize of Bluff City, and Dorothy Kate Brunner, Maebell Morris, Ollie June Duncan and Mary Louise Griffith, all of Erwin; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Ninth Street Baptist Church. Dr. Charles D. Earl and Dr. Chris Ward will officiate. Rev. Frank Proffitt, Dr. Kenneth Jordan and Rev. Kevin Watson will present the eulogy. Music will be provided by the Ninth Street Baptist Church Choir. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memory Gardens, Johnson City. Full military grave rites will be rendered by American Legion Hammond Post 3. Active pallbearers will be the Volunteer Sunday School and the deacons of Ninth Street Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Executive Board and the ministers of Holston Baptist Associaton. All pallbearers are requested to assemble at the church by 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Erwin Memorial Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Rev. Duncan is also survived by son-in-law, Terry Jones; sisters-in-law Frances Duncan, Mildred Duncan and Shirley Duncan; and brothers-in-law Jack Mize, Wayne Morris and Gary Griffith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ninth Street Baptist Church, 310 Ninth St., Erwin.

Edwina R. Elkins
CLINTWOOD - Edwina Rae Elkins, 39, passed away at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Clintwood Thursday, May 23, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and a graduate of Clinchco Vocational School. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rae Nell Hughes Elkins.
She is survived by her father, Edward Elkins of Clintwood.
She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Georges Fork Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Frnak O'Quinn, David O'Quinn, Bennie Stanley and Walter Rose officiating. Burial will be in Crabtree-Elkins Cemetery, Route 2, Clintwood. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The family will receive friends Saturday, May 25, in Mullins Funeral Home Chapel, where a service will be conducted at 7 p.m. with Elders Robert Kelly and Carson Wright officiating.
The body will be taken to the church Sunday, May 26, where a service will be conducted at 7 p.m. with Elders Frank O'Quinn, David O'Quinn, Bennie Stanley and Walter Rose officiating.

Roscoe O. Lawson
COEBURN - Roscoe Oliver "Bud" Lawson, 77, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2002, at home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arvil and Lona Lawson; a sister, Frances Lawson Buchanan; and an infant son. He was a member of Midway Church, Coeburn, and a veteran of World War II, where he served on the Battleship USS Sustain.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanette Jordan Lawson; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Olivia Smith of Coeburn; daughters and sons-in-law Gina Horton of Maysville, Ga., Tammy and Rodney McFadden of Maysville, Debbie and Roy Bright of Norton, Donna and Louna Lawson of Coeburn and Clara and Barry House of Sassafras, Ky.; nephew, Larry Buchanan of Castlewood; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of church family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Coeburn, with the Rev. Kermit Evans officiating.
