Ella H. Kegley
GATE CITY - Ella Ruth Hartsock Kegley, 64, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1938, in Russell County a daughter of the late Claude and Lillie Belle Salyer Hartsock, she was the widow of Garland Bruce Kegley. She attended Emmaus Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Glenn E., Ronnie and Clarence B. Hartsock.
Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Dallas Elam, Gate City; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Harold and Alice Hartsock, Church Hill, Tenn.,Wayne and Lena Hartsock, Castlewood and Vena Hartsock, Castlewood; several nieces and nephews; also special friends, Ray and Dianne Johnson, Lebanon, Gladys Elam, Castlewood and Kyle and Liz Percey, Church Hill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Revs. Harold Hawkins, R.G. Rose and Cliff Duncan officiating. Music will be provided by Sincerity. Burial will follow in the Grassy Creek Community Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002.

Helen Romans Long
MARION - HelenRomans Long, 78, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, in Capon Bridge, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willy and Slim Romans.
Survivors include: one daughter, Gay Jones Lewis, Capon Bridge; one son, Dan Jones, Lilburn, Ga.; one granddaughter, Kim; two grandsons, Nathan and Matthew; three sisters, Elizabeth Clark, Atkins, Sadie Swanston, Manassas and Betty Sexton, Bluefield, W.Va.; and one brother, Clifton Dillman, Marion.
Funeral services and burial at the Timber Ridge Church Cemetery were held on June 5, 2002, in Capon Bridge. This is a courtesy announcement of Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion.

Violet Grimsley McNew
GATE CITY - Violet Grimsely McNew, 87, 13506 East Carters Valley Road, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at HolstonValley Medical Center in Kingsport. She was born in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of the late James and Nancy Sanders, and had lived most of her life in the Bristol area before moving to Gate City seven years ago. She was the widow of Trigg C. McNew. She served as secretary of the Bristol Virginia School Board and was a member of the First Assembly of God.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice Grimsley Flanary and her husband Ezra of Gate City; a son, Richard Grimsley and his wife Judy of Marietta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Kim Smith of Gray, Tenn., Sandra O'Ferrall of Piney Flats, Wendy Regan of Bluff City and Michael Grimsley of Marietta; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 o'clock Friday evening in the Chapel of Blevins Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Carico officiating. The committal service and burial will be at 11 o'clock Saturday morning in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 Friday evening at the funeral home.
Arrangements especially for Mrs. McNew have been made through Blevins Funeral Home.

Odessa Musick
HONAKER - Mrs. Odessa Musick, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born March 6, 1916, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late George and Julie Honaker Harris. A lifelong resident of Honaker, she was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Swords Creek Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James "Buck" Musick; one son, Leonard Allen Musick; one grandson, Shannon Musick; one sister, Ellen Lockhart; and one brother, Norman Harris.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Claude Hart of Rosedale, Va.; three sisters, Gladie Belcher, who made her home with Odessa for the past nine years, Christine Meade of Portsmouth,Va., and Shirley Thompson of Honaker; two granddaughters, Jamie Ball and Ava Hilton, both of Rosedale; one grandson, Anthony Hart of Honaker; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Ball and Ivey Jo Hart; three great-grandsons, Logan Ball, Payton Ball and Hartley Hilton; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Brother Les Ritchie and Mr. David Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Tim Ball, Mike Hilton, Wayne Hess, Brian Hess, Rick Hess and Bradley Honaker.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the third floor nursing staff at Russell County Medical Center, Dr. Ulrich, Viola Nash and Shelvia Jackson.
Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Friday.

Elene Ray Phillips
HONAKER - Funeral services for Ms. Elene Ray Phillips will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Andrew Presley officiating. Interment will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens at Norton.
Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Phillips, 68, of 740 Locust St., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital.

Sylvia P. Roller
Funeral services for Sylvia Pearl Whitaker Roller will be 2 p.m. Friday at the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Malcolm Shelton, Brother Fred Robinette and Brother Randall Roller officiating. Burial and graveside service will follow in the East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of the Everlasting Life III. Active pallbearers will be Garland White, Robert Hawkins, David Quillen, Jack Roller, David L. Roller and Kenneth Roller. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Mack Hicks, Nathan Bledsoe, Kenneth Whitaker, James Whitaker, Anthony Roller, Vernon Roller and Charles Johnson.
Mrs. Roller, 68, of Deck Valley Road, Bristol, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in the Wellmont Hospice House after a period of declining health.
East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Roller family.

Lovel Sturgill
BIG STONE GAP - Lovel Sturgill, 77, of the Back Valley Road, passed away at his home Wednesday, June 5, 2002.
He was born in Letcher County, Ky., the son of the late Ed and Nannie Bentley Sturgill.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan G. Sturgill, on June 27, 1999; and by a son, Curtis Lovel Sturgill on Oct. 3, 1973.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, the Korean conflict and in the Army Reserves during Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1964.
He worked and retired as a federal mine inspector for eastern Kentucky and southwest Virginia.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Retired Enlisted Association and the American Legion.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Edward Dillard and Cheri Lee Sturgill of Dickens, Iowa; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Jo and Larry Dale Pruitt Sr. of Cedar Bluff and Bobbie and Thomas Allen Brickner of Germantown, Md.; five grandchildren, Charity Jo, Jo Beth, Larry Dale Jr., Tyler Lovel and Connor Ray; one brother, Print Sturgill of Ermine, Ky.; and one sister, Sue Moore of Ermine.
Calling hours will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Sturgill Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Sturgill officiating. Interment will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens, Woodway, Va. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post 3382 of Kingsport.
Pallbearers will be: Edward Dillard Sturgill, Larry Dale Pruitt Sr., Larry Dale Pruitt Jr., Thomas Allen Brickner, Jim Toland and Thomas W. Brickner.
Print Sturgill will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Sturgill Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Dewey F. Taylor
DORAN BOTTOM, Va. - Mr. Dewey F. Taylor, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, following a long illness. Born in W. Va., he was the son of the late James Milton and Eva Trent Taylor. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired train engineer for Jewell Smokeless Coal Co. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 1640 and the Doran Wesleyan Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Taylor; three sisters, Peggy Meador, Bertha Dillon and Maude Webb; and two brothers, Wallace Taylor and Jack Taylor.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mrs. Virginia Smith Taylor; one son, William Taylor and wife Patricia of Abingdon; one brother, James W. Taylor and wife Christine of Sophia, W.Va.; one sister, Doris Farley of Manassas, Va.; three grandchilden, William Taylor and wife Emily, Kimberly Taylor and fiance, Richard Darghty and Jerry Taylor and wife Haven; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Taylor and Emilie Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va., with Rev. Bud Fugate officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V.
The family will receive friends at the Greenhills Mausoleum after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Bobby Harold Thomas
BEXAR, Texas - Bobby Harold Thomas, 37 years of age, passed away Monday, June 3, 2002, in the Chandler Nursing Home, San Antonio. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.

Evangeline Vencille
ABINGDON - Mrs. Evangeline Vencille, 72, formerly of Richlands, passed away Thursday morning in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital following a lengthy illness.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Giles D. Wise
CASTLEWOOD - Funeral services for Giles D. Wise will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with the Rev. Glenn Hammacker officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Pallbearers will be George Jordan, Miles Sutherland, Junior Harvey, Terry Fields, Larry Minton and Bill Blevins. Honorary pallbearers will be Elmer White and Roy Phillips.

BIG STONE GAP - Adelaide Martha (Collier) Allman, 91, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Wellmont-HolstonValley Medical Center in Kingsport.
She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap. She was a presser with the former Royal Laundry Dry-Cleaning Co. in Big Stone Gap. She was a member of First Christian Church in Big Stone Gap.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Allman; daughter Mary Evelyn Warren; grandson, Mike Warren; her parents, James A. and Mollie (Kaylor) Collier; two sisters, Reba Smith and Mamie Ruth Collier; and three brothers, Elmer Collier, Fred Collier and James R. Collier.
Surviving are her son, James F. Allman of Rose Hill, Va.; two grandchildren, Corkey and Steve Warren; three great-grandchildren, Shannon, Josh and Jeremy Warren; four sisters, Dorothy Kleineick and Artency Collier Buckles of Big Stone Gap, Opal Madge Hopkins of Kingsport and Sarah Jessee of Lewisville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews, a caring sister-in-law, Lucille Allman of Big Stone Gap; and a caring friend, LaRue Bobich of Big Stone Gap.
Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Holding Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Townsend officiating. Burial will follow in Glencoe Cemetery. Holding Funeral Home is in charge.

GLADE SPRING - A graveside service for Mrs. Maude Felty Atkins will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. John Massey officiating.
Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery Friday for the service.

Harold D. Bennington
SUGAR GROVE, Va. - Harold Dean Bennington, 72, of the Blue Springs community died Wednesday, May 1, 2002. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Blue Springs United Methodist Church. Visitation is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lindsey Funeral Home, Rural Retreat.

James H. Bishop
CLARKSVILLE, Ala. - James Holmes (Jim) Bishop, 74, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Hardin County General Hospital, Savannah, Tenn.
He was born in Kingsport, a son of the late Holmes and Blanch Bishop.
Surviving are two sons, Mike Bishop of Clarksville and Tony Bishop of Savannah; sister Betty Troxell; brother Jerry Bishop; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 4, 2002, in Camden, Ala.
Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home of Greenville, Ala., is in charge.

Mary Jayne Blevins
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Mrs. Joe A. (Mary Jayne) Blevins of Moore Avenue died at Johnson City Medical Center late evening, April 30, 2002.
Mrs. Blevins was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College, receiving her bachelor degree and masters from ETSU. She was a teacher, having taught in Sullivan County, Kingsport City, Greeneville City and Greene County school systems, retiring after 30 years. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, a former member of Greenville/Greene County Library Board, a member of the Andrew Johnson Club, Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Nolichuckey Chapter of the DAR.
Survivors include her parents, Olin C. and Jayne L. Flora of Greeneville; one sister-in-law, Evelyn B. Dixon of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her husband, Joseph A. Blevins, who died Jan. 16, 1993, preceded her in death.
Interment will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2002, at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. Reverend Dr. Charles Starks will officiate. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or to Greeneville/Greene County Library.
