RICHMOND - Lena Artrip Newberry, 89, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002. She was a native of Clintwood and widow of Ralph A. Newberry. Mrs. Newberry was a retired first grade teacher at Maude Trivett Elementary School and had taught school in Dickenson County prior to moving to Richmond.
She was the beloved mother of Johnny M. Newberry, Sammy Jack Newberry and Belinda N. Flournoy. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jamie, Chrystie, Cole and Sam Flournoy and Allan and Kenneth Newberry; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Don Artrip of Clintwood.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Cemetery, Route 3, Skeetrock section, Clintwood.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Dorothy J. Oliver
Dorothy J. Oliver, 82, of Bristol Tennessee, passed away on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at the Cambridge House. She was a member of the Williston Presbyterian Church in Williston, S.C., and was the daughter of the late Inez Thomas Parker. She was the widow of Guy Oliver Sr.
Survivors include son, Guy Oliver Jr. of Williston; sisters, Judy Hockett of Bristol Tennessee, and Peggy King of Bristol Virginia; brother, Leslie Thomas of Baltimore; grandson, Guy Newman Oliver of N. Augusta, S.C.; granddaughter, Bethany Montoya of Lugoff, S.C.; six great-grandchildren sister-in-law, Mary Jo Oliver of Bristol Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Branch.
Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Guy Oliver Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home.

Blanche P. Phipps
MARION - Blanche Pansy Phipps, 81, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in the Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Stafford, Va.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Ben and Leona Thomas and was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Phipps, and a daughter, Virginia Blanche Phipps. She was also preceded in death by two sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include: two daughters and one son-in-law, Juanita and Coolidge Ellis, Marion and Sue Jones, Alexandria; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Ben and Barbara Phipps, Stafford, Steve Phipps, Alexandria, Robert Phipps, Alexandria and George Phipps, Alexandria; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Hutton officiating. Interment will follow in Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Phipps family.

GLADE SPRING - Mrs. Lisa Mae Arnett Price, 37, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Johnson Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lora Ann Arnett Gray.
Survivors: her husband, Harold Lee Price, Glade Spring; one son, T.J. Arnett of the home; one daughter, Michaellia Arnett Price of the home; three stepsons, Brian Kelly, Chilhowie, Harold D. Price, Chilhowie and Bobby Gene Price, Marion; one stepdaughter, Janice E. Pennington, Glade Spring; father, James O. Arnett; mother and step-dad, Sadie R. and James F. Eldridge Jr., Meadowview; five brothers, Guyan J. Arnett, Cosocton, Ohio, Eddie Arnett, Meadowview, Joseph Light, Harrisonburg, Va., Dana L. Arnett, Meadowview and Kristopher S. Eldridge, Meadowview; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles C. Scott Jr.
Charles C. "C.C." Scott Jr. died Sept. 8, 2002.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, 4 p.m. at the Meadowview United Methodist Church, 29043 Walker Lane, P.O. Box 255, Meadowview, VA 24361. Calling will be from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service. The family requests rather than flowers, memorial donations be made to the church.
Born June 21, 1925, in Holston, Va.,. and raised in the Glade Spring area, C.C. was the son of Charlie and Velma Campbell Scott, long time members of the Meadowview UMC and resident of the Meadowview/Cedarville area. C.C. was the brother of Eula (Henry) Counts, Leola (Ova) Edwards, Mildred (Glenn) Humphreys and Lourene ("Joey") Tomlinson-Goedert. He was the uncle of J.C. and Jim Counts, Abingdon, Chad, Chandler, Vesta, Jarrett, Hollis and Ovetta Edwards, Telford/Jonesborough, Tenn., Peggy and Deborah Humphreys and Robert and Sarah Tomlinson.
C.C. is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eileen Murphy-Scott and their daughter, M. Suzanne Scott-Marzec. C.C. and Eileen have 14 nieces and nephews; 21 great-nieces and great-nephews; five great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; many cousins; and a large extended family.
Dewey Sturgill Jr.
JENKINS, Ky. - Dewey Sturgill Jr., 69, passed away early Monday morning, Oct. 7, 2002, at his home. He was born in Jenkins and lived most of his life there. Mr. Sturgill was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a son of the Dewey and Goldie Sturgill and was also preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Reid; two brothers, Martin Sturgill and Jerry Douglas Sturgill; and also by his grandmother who raised him, Una Sturgill.
Survivors include his wife, Molly Hodges Sturgill, Jenkins; two sons, Mark Sturgill and David Sturgill. both of Jenkins; two grandsons, Dewey Gabriel Sturgill and Caleb Joseph Sturgill, both of Jenkins; five sisters, Lois Mullins, Coeburn, Barbara Damron, Dorton, Ky., Mae Sexton, Jenkins, Dee Smith, Corinth, Ky., and Sherry Smith, also of Jenkins; one brother, Terry Sturgill, Pine Grove, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at Polly & Craft Funeral Home Chapel with Father Edward Randall, Rev. Ralph Vicars and Rev. Bo Smith officiating. Interment will be in Jessee Cemetery, Wise, Va. Pallbearers will be friends and family members.

Pauline S. Young
HURLEY, Va. - Pauline Doretta Stacy Young, 67 years of age, of Lester's Fork, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at her home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Myrtle Blankenship Stacy. She was a life long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two daughters, Prescilla and husband Robert McClanahan, Hurley and Patricia and husband Lee Mounts, Oakwood, Va.; two sons, Michael and wife, Brenda Young, Mouth Card, Ky., and Earl (Buddy) and wife, Shana Young, Green Cove Springs, Fla.; three sisters, Hazel Gibson, Wolford, Va., Della McCoy, Wolford, and Emma Dora Binion, Hickory, N.C.; one brother, Donnie Ray Stacy, Hurley; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and special friend, James Justus, Hurley.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church near Hurley with Brothers Jeff Alan Stacy, Freddie Rife and Willis Smith officiating with burial to follow in the Willis Blankenship Cemetery on Main Knox, Hurley.
Friends may call at Bethel Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. with services at 7 p.m. and special singing by Willis Smith and Edna Blankenship.

FREDERICKSBURG - Worley Eugene Akers, 71, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at INOVA Alexandria Hospital. He was retired superintendent for various commercial plumbing contractors.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce A. Akers; sons, Danny Akers of Tennessee, David Akers of Chesterfield, Ronnie Akers of Fredericksburg and Randy Akers and his wife Heidi of Fredericksburg; sister, Stella Estep of Norton; three grandchildren, Justin, Rebecca and Roxanne Akers; and his mother-in-law, Ada Dotson of Abingdon.

Bonnie Sue Atkins, 62, of Bristol Virginia, went home to be with her Lord Dec. 1, 2002, at the Wellmont Hospice House. She was a member of Virginia Avenue Baptist Church and former owner of A and A Antiques. She was preceded in death by her father, J.W. Saltz.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Freddie Lee Atkins; twin daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Benny James and Teresa and Charles Murray, all of Bristol Tennessee; granddaughter, Chelsea James, and grandson, Steven Murray; mother, Rosa Lee Saltz of Abingdon; one sister, Betty J. Arnold, Abingdon; brother, Jerry W. Saltz, Abingdon; two nieces; and two nephews.

William G. Belcher
ELIZABETHTON - Mr. William G. "Bill" Belcher, 69, formerly of Richlands and Coalwood, W.Va., died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at his home.
He was born in English,W.Va., and was a son of the late Ransey L. and Lucille Hatfield Belcher. He was a Korean War veteran and managed Richlands Builders Supply in the 1960s and Richlands Bailey Lumber Co. in the 1970s.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Jean See and Wanda Boyles; and one brother, Dave Belcher.
Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Charles T. (Sheila) Sparks of Concord, N.C., Ms. Sandra L. Belcher of Greensboro, N.C., and Mrs. Richard R. (Stephanie) McKinney of Hopedale, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Sue Belcher Huffard of Bristol Tennessee; four grandchildren, Melissa D. French of Greensboro, N.C., Natalia D. Patsey of Greensboro, Stephen A. McKinney of Hopedale and Luke A. McKinney of Hopedale; and many wonderful nieces and nephews also survive.
According to Mr. Belcher's wishes, no services will be held after his cremation. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ST. PAUL - Hassel Ray Bond, 59, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in the Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oakley and Jalie Meade Bond; two brothers, Harless Bond and Glen Bond; and a sister, Lola Mae Ward. He was a retired employee of the Bullion Hollow Coal Company and a legendary coon hunter. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol Carty Bond; a son, Stacy Hassel Bond of St. Paul; two daughters, Rosemary Taylor of St. Paul and Lawana Miller of Jonesborough, Tenn.; two brothers, Winfred Bond of Tampa, Fla., and Daris (Bill) Bond of Castlewood; six sisters, Jean Ward and Doris Marshall, both of St. Paul, Betty Bush of Florida, Sue Richardson of Huron, Ohio, Fay Schuh of Ohio, and Shirley Sexton of Coeburn; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn Catherine Bowman, 85, of 1119 West Cedar St., Bristol, Tenn., passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Oakwood Hospital, Dearborn, Mich.
Mrs. Bowman was a native and lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a member of the Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Statzer.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carol Bowman of Church Hill, Tenn.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Charlie Chase of South Gate, Mich., Pam and Kenneth Birchfield of Bristol Virginia and Karen and Ronnie Heaton of Hampton,Va.; two brothers, Herman Worley of Bristol Virginia and Ray Worley of Lincoln Park, Mich.; one sister, Lois Simcox of Bristol Virginia; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James C. Cloyd
JOHNSON CITY - Mr. James Clinton "Jim" Cloyd, 76, 519 Claude Simmons Road, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in Erwin after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Cloyd was a Johnson City native and a son of the late Lake Strong Cloyd and James Earl Cloyd.
He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on a baseball scholarship and was recently inducted into the UT Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.
Mr. Cloyd was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1956.
He completed Harvard University's Small Business Management Program.
Mr. Cloyd was president and chief executive officer of United Oil marketers, Inc.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnson City, where he served as senior warden and a member of the vestry.
Mr. Cloyd served as a board member of the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Board, The Johnson City Boys Club and the Watauga Area Mental Health Center.
He was a member of the Johnson City Jaycees, Johnson City Kiwanis, the Hurstleigh Club and the UT Letterman Club. He was a former chairman of the Washington County Republican Party.
Mr. Cloyd was preceded in death by one brother, Charles William Cloyd.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Peterson Cloyd; one son, Chris Cloyd, Chapin, S.C.; three daughters, Eydie Cloyd, Nashville, Janie Cloyd Kirby, Chapin, and Elizabeth Cloyd, Johnson City; one brother, Bob Cloyd, Huntsville, Ala.; four grandchildren; two nieces; and three nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at noon Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church. The Reverend Margaret Zeller will be the Celebrant and The Reverend Frank M. Cooper IV will be the preacher. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Burial Park. Pallbearers will be John Miller, Fred Brandt, Bobby Evans, Leland Lancaster, Buck McClellan,Bo Sells, Phil Walters, Bob Bagby and Matt Raby. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m.Wednesday until service time.
