Wayne Mounts
BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. - Mr. Wayne Mounts, 79, of the Pilgrims Knob section, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in a Grundy hospital following a long illness. Born in McDowell County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Floyd and Lilly Smith Mounts. He was a retired coal miner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie Mounts; and a son, Junior Mounts.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Horn Mounts; three sons, Harold Mounts of Jewell Valley, David Mounts of Whitewood, Va., and Bobby Mounts of Jarret, Va.; four daughters, Pearly Mae Monahan and Hattie Marie Mounts of Roanoke, Lois Jane Mounts of Indiana, and Phyllis Davis of Grundy; one brother, Boyd Mounts of Gilbert, W.Va.; several grandchildren; and a special granddaughter, Kaitlin Sierra Hughes.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Loggy Bottom Pentecostal Holiness Church at Whitewood with Rev. Jack Ward, Rev. Mike Altizer and Rev. Andy Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the Mullins Cemetery on Compton Mountain. Pallbearers will be Gary Vanover, Bill Joe Kelly, Lawrence Deel, Franklin Miller, Herman Keen, Freddy Lester and Arthur Whitt.
The body will be taken to the church where friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Monday.

Erston D. Pendergrass
RICHLANDS - Mr. Erston D. Pendergrass, 96, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital following a long illness. Born at Tip Top, Va., he was the son of the late Joseph and Cora French Pendergrass. He was a retired engineer with Norfolk and Western Railroad.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Elizabeth Lowe Pendergrass; one son, Joe Pendergrass; a brother, Burl Pendergrass; and a sister, Bertha Pendergrass.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ruth Jean Ogan of Lebanon, Mrs. Shirley Dean Smith and husband Don of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Mrs. Betty Smith and husband Earl of Charlottesville, Va., and Mrs. Patricia (Patsy) Richardson and husband Harry of Pounding Mill, Va.; two sons, Bobby D. Pendergrass and wife Barbara of Jackson, Ga., and Kyle H. Pendergrass and wife Juanita of Leo, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Burial will be Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands. The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6 until 9 p.m. Monday. Family and friends attending the burial are asked to meet by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home for the processional to the cemetery.

Garnett R. Powell
KINGSPORT - Garnett R. Powell, 81, a resident of Kingsport for the past 44 years, passed away early Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2002, at his home following an illness of one year. Mr. Powell had previously been a teacher at Tennessee High School in Bristol Tennessee.
At the request of Mr. Powell his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Smith and Rev. Kathy Hale officiating.
Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 24, 2002, from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the memorial service.

Committal services for Christine Hickman Powers will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery.
The Rev. Stephen L. Playl will officiate. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Powers of Bristol Tennessee, died peacefully at home at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002.

ABINGDON - A graveside service for Mrs. Gladys L. Powers will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

CEDAR BLUFF - Mr. Byron E. "Pete" Price, 84, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn., following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Tazewell County and was the son of the late Olga A. and Lou N. Clark Price, both Russell County natives.
He made his home in the Tazewell County area most of his life and was a retired painter. He was a U.S. Army Air Force World War II veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Kitts Price; one sister, Lena Amato; and one brother, Roger W. Price.
Survivors are: three stepsons, Mr. Dennis Kitts of Richlands, Mr. Doug Kitts of Richlands and Mr. Harold Kitts Jr. of Xenia, Ohio; one brother, James H. Price Sr. of Norton; nieces and nephews, James Price Jr., Richard Price, Jane Mayes and Amy Beacham; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Lori Price, Clay Price, Jason Price, Mark Price, Camero Price and Steven Mullins.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 DAV will conduct military graveside services.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands.

Edgel St Clair
GRUNDY - Edgel St Clair, 64 years of age of the Belchers Fork section of Route 2, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at this home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Lillie Mae McClanahan St Clair. He was a member of the Harman Memorial Baptist Church, owner of the St Clair Auto Sales at Keen Mountain, Va., member of the Grundy Lions Club, member of Sandy Valley Lodge 17 A.F. & A.M. , a member of the Scottish Rite of free masonry 32nd degree of Roanoke and a member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke. He was a board member of the Willowbrook Country Club, was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Virginia Independent Automobile Dealers Association.
Mr. St Clair is survived by wife of 46 years, Jean Clevinger St Clair of Grundy; one son, Joe Franklin and wife Cathy St Clair of Keen Mountain, Va.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth and husband Carey Addision of Rosedale, Va.; two sisters, Gearldine Stiltner of Harman, Va., and Phyllis Worley of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, Leon St Clair of Maxie, Va.; and three grandsons Carey Addison Jr., Nicholas John Addison and Jacob William St Clair.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willard Owens officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va.

Sandra S. Coleman
ABINGDON - Mrs. Sandra Dee Shortridge Coleman, 39, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Sandra was a native of Buchanan County, Va., and had lived there before moving to Abingdon in 1990.
She was a member of the West Main Street Freewill Baptist Church and a 1982 graduate of Grundy High School, where she was selected by Who's Who. She was a hairdresser and owned and operated "If It's Hair."
Survivors include her husband, Ronnie Coleman; a daughter, McKalia Janelle Coleman; her parents, Dee and Janice Compton Shortridge, all of Abingdon.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel .
Interment will follow in the Mountain View Untied Methodist church Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Mark Cole, Bill Nunley, Bruce Roberson, Clayton Keen, Tom Watson, Joe Naffah, Paul Taylor and Byron Johnson.
Honorary casketbearers will be the congregation of the West Main Street Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Cox, 91, of Bristol Virginia died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at her daughter's home.

CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. - Mr. Olis Fletcher, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at this home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a son of the late Clarence and Mary Elswick Fletcher, both Buchanan County natives.
He was a retired miner with Jewell Ridge Coal Corp. at Jewell Valley, Va., and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7327. He had made his home in the Claypool area most of his life, was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and was a member of the Reynolds Ridge Community Church.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Janet Sizemore Fletcher; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Donna Jean) Shortt of Abingdon and Mrs. Thomas (Nesta) Sparks of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Fern Hudson of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Effie Davis of Tampa and Mrs. Uva McDilda of Abingdon; one brother, Mr. Waldon Fletcher of Tampa; one grandchild, Clinton Olis Sparks; two step-grandchildren, Kevin Dean Shortt and Christopher Bradley Shortt; and two great-grandchildren, Tristen Wayne Sparks and Clara Breann Sparks.
