Hugh H. Carter
MEADOWVIEW - Mr. Hugh Hamerton Carter, 82, passed away, Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County. He was the son of the late Johnny and Daisy Carter. Hugh attended Lifeline Ministries and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was a former scoutmaster and was a member of James Peters DAV Post 57. He was a retired employee of the Dixie Coca-Cola Co. and John Sevier Steam Plant in Bristol.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Carter; sons William Carter of Meadowview, George Carter of Wytheville and Jerome Carter of Fairfax, Va.; daughters Mary Jenkins of Wytheville, Charlotte Carter Carter of Meadowview, Denise Wilson of Arlington, Texas, and Michelle Carter of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters Saraphine Carter and Naomi Lindsey, both of Meadowview; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
At the request of Hugh, a celebration of life was held July 22, 2000, at Lifeline Ministries. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Darrell Martin officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Highlands Honor Color Guard. There will be no visitation or viewing at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jerome Carter, Charles Coleman, Chris Carter, Shawn Rouse, Darrell Coleman, David Coleman and Tony Coleman. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. J.S. Shaffer and Allen Clarke. The family has requested no flowers, but contributions to be made to the Lifeline Ministries, P.O. Box 337, Meadowview, VA 24361. Those attending the service Saturday are ask to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. for a procession to the cemetery.

Mr. Colley, 51, of Route 1, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.

Shirley Brown Leonard
Ms. Shirley Brown Leonard, 63, of the Riverbend community unexpectedly passed away and went to be with the Lord on April 30, 2002. She was a loving mother and friend to all who knew her. She was a very accomplished bowler for a number of years at Bellmont Lanes and Interstate Bowl, where she earned numerous awards and titles. She loved the outdoors, gardening and quilting.
She is survived by her mother, Ms. Burcha Clark; children and spouses, Shirlene and David Miller, Donna and Scott Morrell, Janene and Eric Shepherd and Billy Ray and Cyndi Brown; 12 grandchildren, whom she adored, April, Matthew, Cory, Katie and Kellie Miller, Amber and Garrett Whitaker, Arica and Sara Shepherd and Natasha, Alayzia and Lauren Brown; and numerous special friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Lacy Gross; her sister, Evelyn Milhorn; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2002, in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Ken Kehere officiating. The committal will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in The Shipley Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Donald D. Morrell
Donald D. Morrell, 61, of 408 Cheyenne Road, Bristol, Va., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at home. He was the son of Marie Hicks Morrell and the late Charles True Morrell and was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School and East Tennessee State University. He had lived in Richmond, Atlanta and Charlotte before returning to Bristol about 10 years ago. He was a retired insurance executive and was a member of McIver Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Metropolitan Mason Lodge 11 in Richmond and was a Shriner.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two daughters, Vicki Bekaert of Alpharetta, Ga., and Tabitha Myler of Cumming, Ga.; four grandchildren, Mitch Myler, Chloe Bekaert, Jameson Bekaert and Meghan Myler.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in Blevins Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Charlton officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Veiw Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bob Kennedy, Bob Smith, Roy Andes, Fred Barr, Leon "Bud" Stedman, Douwi Bekaert, C.E. Jacobs and Allen Skeens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Friday evening at the funeral home.

ST. PAUL - Mildred Woodruff, 78, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Norton Community Hospital in Norton.
She was born in Wise County, the daughter of the late Charlie and Oma Hamilton Booher.
Survivors include seven daughters, Georgia Poston of St. Paul, Barbara Wright of Castlewood, Kathleen Riner of St. Paul, Frances Adkins of Castlewood, Wilma Riner of Castlewood, Phyllis Campbell of Castlewood and Missy Hensley of Castlewood; six sons, Roy Woodruff of St. Paul, Roger Woodruff of Coeburn, Darvil Woodruff of Castlewood, Ronnie Woodruff of Wise, Donald Woodruff of Castlewood and Ricky Woodruff of Lebanon; three sisters, Ruby Couch of Castlewood, Lois Rose of Castlewood and Nellie Mays of Tyler, Mich.; one brother, George Booher of St. Paul; 42 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood Saturday, May 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Darrell Milgrim officiating. Interment will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Dorothy J. Baker
HURLEY, Va. - Dorothy Justus Baker, 75 years of age, of the Guesses Fork section, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Ance and Sally Smith Justus. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Guesses Fork Church of God and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Baker, Dec. 29, 1997.
She is survived by one daughter, Gail and husband, Dan Justus, Hurley; three sons, Gene and wife, Sue Baker, Richlands, Nelson and wife, Loretta Baker, Berlin, Mich., and Larry and wife, Debby Baker, Hurley; two sisters, Fredia Hurley, Hurley, Va., and Victoria Jesse, Paw Paw, Ky.; three granddaughters; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by three sisters; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at noon at the Guesses Fork Church of God with Revs. Donnie Prater, Wilbur Dotson and Doug Blankenship officiating with burial to follow in the Baker Cemetery on Guesses Fork, Hurley.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Guesses Fork Church of God.

Sam retired in 1994 from General Electric in Salem after 38 years.
He is survived by is wife and sweetheart of 50 years, Laura Frances Saul Breeding of Salem; one son, Jerry Breeding of Newton, N.C.; one daughter, Sharon Carroll of Roanoke; one brother, John G. Breeding; three granddaughters; and two grandsons.
