Thomas H. Skorupa
BIG STONE GAP - Thomas H. Skorupa died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap following a brief illness. He was born in Lublin, Poland, in 1911, and came to Dunbar, Va., in 1928. He was a longtime resident of the area, living in Derby, Va., for 45 years; Appalachia, Va., for nine years; and the last 16 years in Big Stone Gap.
Tom was employed by Stonega Coke and Coal Company/Westmoreland Coal Company for 51 years and retired in 1978. He was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Big Stone Gap, the Knights of Columbus and the Appalachia Lions Club. He was the finanacial secretary of the Derby Local Union 6353, District 28 of the United Mine Workers, for more than 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucas and Stella Skorupa; by three brothers, Mike, Pete and Tony; by four sistes, Helen, Anna, Mary and Janie; and by his son, Dr. Thomas E. Skorupa.
Surviving are his wife, Adeline, of nearly 68 years; daughter, Dorothy S. Isaac and son-in-law, Robert E. Isaac of Norton; daughter, Elizabeth S. Jordan of Newport News, Va.; son, Raymond Skorupa and daughter-in-law, Judith Green Skorupa of Pelham, N.Y.; son, Philmore Skorupa and daughter-in-law Toby Wax Skorupa of Big Stone Gap; daughter-in-law, Jean Banhart Skorupa of Newport News; one sister, Josephine Stepien of West Hartford, Conn.; one brother, Joseph Skorupa of Cranston, R.I.; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home in Appalachia from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Big Stone Gap, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, with Rev. Anthony Rodriquez and Rev. Timothy Drake officiating.
Interment will be in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are the grandsons.

Gracie B. Street
RAVEN, Va. - Mrs. Gracie Angeline Blankenship Street, 79, of Route 1, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in McDowell, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Rhoda Blankenship, both Buchanan County natives. She was a member of Gloryland Tabernacle. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lee (Porchie) Street; and four sisters, Pearlie Ethel Blankenship, Virgie Street, Ora Street and Velvia Duty.
She is survived by four sons, Chester Street and wife Patty of Lebanon, Alvie Street and wife Cathern of Stafford, Va., Jerry Street and wife Betty of Richlands and Charlie Street and wife Maxie of Raven, Va.; two daughters, Lily Jane Cooper and husband Sherman of Stafford and Brenda Mitchell and husband Laymon of Jewell Ridge, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Eunice Street of Ivanhoe, Va., Lethia Altizer of Cedar Bluff, Vida Street of Whitewood, Va., Pauline Chafins of Mouthcard, Ky., and Ola Gay Smith of Keswick, Va.; two brothers, Roosevelt Blankenship of Saltville and Pershing Blankenship of Chicago; and two special caretakers, Bess Vandyke and Angel Lamie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va., with Rev. Troy Lester and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Burial will follow in the Street Family Cemetery at Rowe, Va. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. Granddaughters will serve as flower girls.

Kyle G. Sullivan
ST. PAUL - Kyle G. Sullivan, 79, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Virginia City, Va., the son of the late Eugene and Rosa Lowe Sullivan. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired miner from Clinchfield Coal Company and from Ford Motor Company and a member of U.M.W.A. He was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice Sullivan, and two sisters, Myrtle Stanley and Lois Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah Sullivan of St. Paul; two daughters, Virginia Doris Metros and husband William of Rose Lawn, Ind., and Anna Grzych of DeMotte, Ind.; one son, John B. Sullivan and wife Peggy of Castlewood; three sisters, Mrs. Thomas "Nina" Brown of Stevens City, Va., Mrs. Milford "Emogene" Long of St. Paul and Mrs. Helen Davis of Church Hill; two brothers, Kelly "Bud" Sullivan of Church Hill and E.J. Sullivan Jr. of St. Paul; three grandsons, Michael L. Minton and wife Dawn, Hank Minton and wife Lisa and Dennis Sullivan; four granddaughters, Hope Minton, Wendy Minton, Shannon and husband Brad Amburgey and Brigette Sullivan; three great-grandsons, Noah Cady, Shawn Kilgore and Eric Grzych; six great-granddaughters, Cassie Cady, Chelsea Curley, Paula Grzych, Ashley Minton, Elizabeth Grzych and Tavia Mintion; two great-great-grandchildren, Teanna Grzych and Nathan Stump; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood, with the Rev. Mike Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Pallbearers will be Michael Minton, Hank Minton, Dennis Sullivan, Noah Cady, Eric Grzych and Shawn Kilgore. Honorary pallbearers will be McNeil Phillips, James Hartman, Bill Phillips and Bradford Amburgey.

Myrtle Viers
CLINTWOOD - Myrtle Viers, 87, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Norton Community Hospital.
She was born in Dickenson County, Va., the daughter of Wilson and Polly Viers. He was a member of George's Fork Old Regular Baptist Church. Her husband, Hadley Viers; an infant daughter; three brothers; and four sisters preceded Mrs. Viers in death.
Surviving are one sister, Dolly Colley of Kingsport; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Bennie Stanley, Elmer Woods and Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow at the Viers Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi, Va. The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home until time of service. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Ricky James White Sr.
Funeral services for Ricky James White Sr. will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Garland officiating. Burial will follow in MountainView Cemetery.

Mr. White, 45, of 245 Magnolia Drive, Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 23, 2002, at home.

Michael Dean Campbell
ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. - Michael Dean Campbell, 34, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002. Born in Bristol Tennessee, he was the son of Ronnie and June Bellamy Campbell of St. Matthews. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church.
Surviving, besides his parents, are children, Katelyn and Michael Lee Campbell; sister, Rhonda Kyzer Jr. of Lexington, S.C.; grandfather, Rev. A.W. Campbell of Greeneville, Tenn.; and a niece.
Services will be held Tuesday in Lexington.

Lucille O. Deel
VANSANT, Va. - Lucille Osborne Deel, 70 years of age, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late John Larkin and Cansada Duty Osborne. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and a member of Little Freedom Old Regular Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and a homemaker.
Mrs. Deel is survived by her husband of 54 years, Cecil Deel, Vansant; two daughters, Connie and husband, Arvil Quinley, Rural Retreat, Va., and Sandra Ann and husband Bill Church Jr. of Rural Retreat; four sons, Cecil Jr. and wife Jennifer Deel, Rural Retreat, Scotty Ray Deel, Vansant, Jeffrey and wife Denise Deel, Rural Retreat and Rocky and wife Gail Deel, Rural Retreat; six sisters, Stella Faye Yates, Vansant, Pauline Thompson, Culpeper, Va., Trula Yates, Vansant, Shirley Gibson, Iaeger, W.Va., Judy Carol Church, Vansant and Geraldine Thomas, Grundy; one brother, Elmer Osborne, Vansant; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Osborne.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Tommy Deel and Elmer Church officiating with burial to follow in the Deel and Family Cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.
Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Monday evening at 6 p.m. with services Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m.

Claude H. Emmert
BLOUNTVILLE - The Rev. Claude Haskell Emmert, 78, departed this life to be with the Lord, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Indian Path Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Claude was born in Bristol Tennessee, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he earned the Purple Heart. He was a retired minister in the Holston Conference. He was a member of Cassidy United Methodist Church. Claude was preceded in death by his parents, R.S. and Minnie Emmert; and a brother, Fred Emmert.
Claude is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Virginia Pope Emmert of the home; six children, Sheila A. Ketron and husband, Mike, Jerry W. Emmert, Jeffrey Emmert and wife, Heidi, and Claudia Jean Horton and husband, Dale, all of Kingsport, Lawrence H. Emmert and wife, Sherry, of Blountville and Reverend Randall Emmert and wife, Mitzi, of Limestone; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; sisters Elsie Dunn and Dorothy Welch, both of Bristol; brothers Dayton, Jack and Bobby Emmert, all of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at East Lawn Funeral Home and any time at the residence. Funeral service will be at 8 p.m. Monday at East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Larry DeVault and Reverend Randall Emmert officiating. Hildred Green
CLINTWOOD - Hildred Green, passed away Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at NHC Healthcare, Bristol Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ayers Green; her son, Junior Darrell "Bud" Green; and four babies that died at infancy.
She is survived by seven daughters, Betty Fleming of Barium Springs, N.C., Margie Brazie of St. Louis, Mo., Erma J. Barton of Bristol Virginia, Loretta Kay Reigal of Newport News, Va., Linda Gale Rose of Branson, Mo., Deborah Lynn Baker of Haysi, Va., and Rebecca Sue Washington of Saluda, Va.; and three sons, Richard Franklin Green, Bobby Green of Clinchco, Va. and Carroll Ray Green of Clintwood. Hildred is survived by a twin sister, Mildred Deskins of Kingsport, and another sister, Selma Adkins of Kingsport. She is also survived by 29 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Hill and Gary Hess officiating. Burial will be in the Hill Family Cemetery, Hill Ridge section, Route 1, Clintwood.

The widow of Bill Hicks, she was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Hicks. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lora and Tom Presley, Lebanon, and Gladys and Odell Musick, Cleveland; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sharon Hicks, Lebanon; six grandchildren, Quintin Musick, Christopher Musick, Kristy Fields, Darrell Presley, Jessica Hicks and Justin Presley; and three great-grandchildren, Dakota Musick, Hunter Musick and Zeb Musick.

Everett C. Jennings Jr.
JOHNSON CITY - Everett C. "E.C." Jennings Jr., 73, 2005 Heritage Place, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. A native of Exeter, Va., he was a son of the late Everett C. Jennings Sr. and Pearl White Jennings Campbell. He had lived in Tennessee for a number of years. Mr. Jennings had pastored churches in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. He was formerly employed at Watauga Industry, Elizabethton. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred "Buck" White.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Hicks Jennings; a daughter and son-in-law, Thalia and Doug Arnold, Galax, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Max and Freda Jennings, Jonesborough; a sister, Myrtle Harris, Kingsport; two grandchildren, Kristin Jennings, Jonesborough and Ashley Arnold, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. R. Willard Warfield officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

MARION - Mary Hash King, 59, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Dina Hash; one brother, Bill Hash; and one sister, Ada Coomes. She is survived by her husband, Jim King of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Reba and John Cress of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Denise King of Marion; six sisters, Brenda King of Marion, Viola Hall of Sugar Grove, Va., Joann Parks of Atkins, Va., Betty Daniels of Hillsville, Okie Fritz of Roanoke and Lida Parks of Churchville, Md.; five brothers, Leonard Hash of Marion, Dale Hash of Aberdeen, Md., Rick Hash of Havre de Grace, Md., Letcher Hash of Georgia, and Max Hash of Lakeland, Fla.; three grandchildren, Megan and Logan Cress and Bailey King; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Leota Clyburn, Anna Davis and Rita McCarter. Lietta V. Lambert
CLINTWOOD - Lietta Vanover Lambert, 74, died Nov. 17, 2002, at Dickenson County Medical Center, Clintwood, after a long illness.
Born in Jenkins, Ky., Mrs. Lambert was the daughter of Victor and Elizabeth Mullins Vanover, a lifelong resident of Clintwood, a member of Clintwood Baptist Church and a volunteer at the Dickenson County Medical Center. Her parents and a brother, Troy Lee Vanover, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Haskel Lambert, Clintwood; one sister, Pauline Vanover, Delray Beach, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Fred Lockhart, Martinsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Myra Lambert, Clintwood; one grandson, Todd Lockhart, Martinsville; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Natasha and David Moore, Clintwood; two great-granddaughters, Ryan Danielle and Jordan Alexis Moore, Clintwood; several nieces and nephews; and a special young lady, Shari Watson and her mother, Joyce, also of Clintwood.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, from the Clintwood Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Bonnell and Rev. P.J. Vanover officiating. Committal services and entombment will be noon Wednesday at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery, Clintwood. The family will receive friends after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Clintwood Baptist Church until time of service. Pallbearers are Fred Lockhart, Todd Lockhart, David Moore, Vince Vanover, Richard "Lindy" Vanover, Josh Vanover, David Vanover and Jimmie Vanover.

Mrs. Lowe, 83, formerly of Bandy, Va., passed away Nov. 14, 2002, in New Mexico following a lengthy illness.

Roy E. Mize
MARION - Roy Edward Mize "The Telephone Man", 63, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at his home. He attended Rowland Creek Church of the Brethren. Mr. Mize retired from Sprint Telephone with 36 and a half years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was granted lifetime membership in the Marion Life Saving Crew after over 25 years of volunteer service. Mr. Mize was a charter member of White Rock Hunting Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ryburn and Celia Mize; one brother, Frank Mize; and his wife, Maevell Tolliver Mize. Mr. Mize is survived by two daughters, Amy Hunt and husband, Robert of Marion, Teresa Mize and fiancÈ, Clay Giles of Greeneville, Tenn.; three special cousins, Auther Sherwood, Willie Sherwood and Gaye Moore, all of Marion; a special companion, Dreama Wilkinson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastors Fred Parker and Chuck Herrell officiating. Kitty M. Poskas
CLEVELAND, Va. - Mrs. Kitty Marcella Maxfield Poskas, 75, of Route 2, passed away Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born May 11, 1927, in Finney, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Della Gamble Maxfield. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Finney Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Benny M. Statzer.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, George Poskas of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Danny Price of Honaker, Frances and Gene Miller of Cleveland and Coetta and Mickey Hoge of Lebanon; one grandson, Mark A. Price of Morrisville, N.C.; one granddaughter, Marsha R. Price of Radford, Va.; one sister, Joe Ella Honaker of Honaker; three brothers, David B. Maxfield and Donald W. Maxfield, both of Honaker, and John D. Maxfield of Rosedale; special boy, Tommy Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Stephen Musick and Brother Les Ritchie officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
