James W. Morris
James W. "Red" Morris, 85, died unexpectedly at home Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002. Born in Washington County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Charles and Nora Morris. He had lived in Bristol since 1950.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Morris; one sister, Mary Hodge; one brother, J.B. Morris; and one granddaughter, Terry Massengill.
Mr. Morris served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and retired from Time Motor Freight and Pinkerton Security Agency. He was a member of the Westhighlands Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Good of Bluff City; five sons, Jimmy, Charles, Bobby, Steve and Phillip Morris, all of Bluff City; sister Eva Mae Hudson of Piney Flats; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sam Rasnake officiating. The committal and entombment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Westhighlands Church of 2222 Volunteer Parkway, Bristol, TN 37620. Cathy J. Ottinger
JOHNSON CITY - Cathy J. Ottinger, 50, of 1111 Miller Street died Saturday Sept. 28, 2002, at her residence.
She was Bristol Virginia native who lived most of her life in Bluff City before relocating to Johnson City in 1990. She was a daughter of Edna Trivett Nelson of Johnson City and the late John Louis Nelson.
Mrs. Ottinger worked for 20 years as a geriatric L. P. N. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Johnson City.
In addition to her father, Mrs. Ottinger was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Jack Nelson.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Hubert "Johnny" Ottinger; two sons, Jimmy Johnson of Johnson City and Terry Johnson and his wife, Candy, of Elizabethton; one daughter, Kimberly Wickerham and her husband, Todd, of Charlotte; three brothers, John H. Nelson Sr. of Bluff City, and Robert L. Neslon and John L. Nelson Jr., both of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Wanda Miller of Granite Falls, N.C., and Pat Cunningham of Indianapolis; aunt Gladys Russell of Bristol Tennessee, uncle H. L. Trivett of Bristol Virginia; grandson Isaac Ray Johnson of Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel D. Pippin
ABINGDON - Hazel Dye Pippin, 87, a resident of Abingdon died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Washington County, who lived near Abingdon all of her life. She was of the Methodist faith.
She was a daugher of the late Richard Branson Dye and late Martha Leonard Dye. She was the widow of Harley Albert Pippin. She was preceded in death by two sons, Eugene and Mark Pippin.
Survivors include four daughters, Christine P. Dunn of Abingdon, Frances P. Wallo of Mechanicsville, Va.; Nancy P. Miller of Burnside, Ky.; and Patty P. Alderson of Bristol Tennessee; four sons, Harold B. Pippin of Hopewell, Va., Larry W. Pippin and Richard B. "Dickie" Pippin, both of Abingdon, and David Wayne Pippin of Vinton, Va.; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral serevices will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Knolikreg Memorial Park. Friends and family are requested to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at Campbell Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.

MARION - Harold Preston Powell, 63, died unexpectedly, Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Marion. He was a long-time employee of Brunswick Corp. and Marion Composites. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Powell was preceded in death by a grandaughter Kristina Salter. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Taylor Powell of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law; Vicky and Jeff Salter of Chilhowie; his mother, Alice Powell of Marion; four sisters, Martha Gullion; Janet Greer, Yvonne Powell, all of Marion; and Yolanda Compton of Sarasota, Fla., one brother, Everette Powell of Marion; several nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren, Shane Goodpasture and Jordan Salter.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. l, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. David Nietch officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Mabelle Kathleen Sarver, 63, of Debra Street entered into rest Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home with the Rev. George Holcombe officiating.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Sarver; her parents, Otto and Betty Stablein of Los Angeles, Calif.; her sons Jim Sarver III of Atlanta and Ken Sarver of Evans; her daughters Katherine Walton of Bristol; Susan Lucky of Martinez and Elizabeth Sarver of Atlanta; her brothers Jeff Stablein and Martin Stablein, both of Los Angeles; her sisters Rosalee Young of San Francisco and Treeny Tellis of Los Angeles; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Sarver was born in Moline, Ill. She was a member of Stevens Creek Community Church. She also loved crafts.
A visitation wll be held today from 2-5 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home, Augusta, Ga.
Harry S. Shuler
CHILHOWIE - Harry Sanders "San" Shuler, 73, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
He was the son of the late Gran and Mary Dolinger Shuler. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lousie Smith; four sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Louella Martin Shuler; one son, Richard Carel Martin of Chilhowie; one daughter Connie Kirk of Glade Spring; four sisters, Jack Walker of Chilhowie, Jo Baumgardner of Wytheville, Eva Williams of Atkins and Violet Tomlinson of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and two special friends James Earl Smith and Roger Helton.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grosses Creek Cemetery with Rev. Lloyd L. Sheets officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Dorothy D. Stallard
KINGSPORT - Dorothy Dishner Stallard, 80, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Stallard was born in Bristol, where she resided until moving to Kingsport 18 months ago. She retired from Dominion Life Insurance Co. in Bristol, where she worked as a secretary for many years. Dorothy was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Quillen Stallard, parents, Earl and Lena Barb Disher and four brothers, Harold Dishner, Clarence Dishner, Woodrow Dishner and Melvin Dishner. Surviving are two nieces Linda D. Compton of Kingsport, Sharon D. Smoke of Greenwood, S.C., and a sister-in-law, Virginia Ruth Dishner of Kingsport.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, with Pastor Gary Chenoweth officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Memorials may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Chruch, 672 Island Road, Bristol, VA 24201.

HURLEY - Elsie Lorraine Hatfield Taylor, 71, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Buchanan General Hospital, following an extended illness. Born at Williamson, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Govener Taylor and Martha Allen Hattfield. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, was of the Christian faith and a homemaker.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband, Sherman Taylor of Hurley; one daughter, Lorena Kay and husband, Donald Grizzle, of Paynesville, W.Va.; three sons, James and wife, Judy Addair, of Hurley; Douglas Addair of Defuniak, Fla.; and David and wife, Patricia Addair, of Hurley; two half-sisters, Judy C. Hatfield of South Williamson, Ky., and Saron K. Hall of Elkhorn City, Ky.; three half-brothers, Carl Justice of Hurley, Charles Hatfield of South Williamson and Ancie E. Hatfield of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren, James Addair Jr., Diana Addair, Megan Addair, Joshua Addair, Matthew Grizzle and Caitlyn Grizzle; and one great-granddaughter, Sabrina Addair.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Claybern H. Addair; one brother, John Taylor Hatfield Jr.; and stepfather Harper Justice.
Funeral service will be conducted Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Bethany Bible Church with Pastor Paul Rife officiating. Burial will follow in Allen Cemetery on Right Fork of Paw Paw near Hurley. Rev. James L. Addair
Reverend James Lundy Addair (Preacher Jim), 85, of 224 Ramey Road, Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Beartown, W.Va., went to meet his Savior Sunday, May 12, 2002, at his residence. Reverend Addair was born Jan. 28, 1917, to John H. and Nannie Smith Addair. He was a retired minister of the Church of the Living God and a retired coal miner. He had preached the precious word of God for more than 50 years and had pastored many churches in the area. He was known for his love and devotion to God and won many souls for the kingdom in his ministry. He attended Shelby Street Church of God. His daughter, Lori Cross-Hobson and husband, Terry, survive him, along with three sons and daughters-in-law, James Stanley and Gin Addair of North Tazewell, John Stephen and Patsy Addair of Bradshaw, W.Va., and Carl Thomas and Judy Addair of Bristol, Tenn. Brother Oliver (Dobb) Addair of Iaeger, W.Va., also survives. Thirteen grandchildren, Jay Addair, Shonna Addair Whittaker, Stephen Addair, Jeanna Addair Cook, Bobby Addair, Tommy Addair, Jamie Addair, Annie Addair Lester, Tina Cross Greer, Dustin Cross, Larry Duncan Jr., Chase Hobson and Carmen Hobson Roberts also survive. He also has 17 great-grandchildren surviving him. Preacher Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Bonnie Kathern Stanley Addair; three brothers, Tom, Ed and Ernie Addair; four sisters, Audrey Addair Porter, Hattie Addair Lowe, Kathern Addair Varady and Janet Addair Riffe; and two grandsons, Tony Addair and Billy Joe Cross. A Celebration of Life service will be held after visitation. The body will be taken to his home church in Garland, W.Va., on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, and the funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday there with burial to be in Viers Cemetery in Bradshaw. Bessie V. Anderson
CLINTWOOD - Bessie Viers Anderson, 82, of Route 3 passed away Monday, May 13, 2002, in HolstonValley Medical Center in Kingsport. Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Jeff and Louvenia Arrington Viers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Anderson; brothers Luther and Earl Viers; and sisters Pearl Owens, Maxie Owens, Maudie Newberry and Stella Robinson. She was the last surviving family member of her generation. She was formerly employed by Dickenson County School Board as a cook at Haysi High School and she attended Old Regular Baptist Church.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and a very special great-niece, Carnita Owens.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Danny Yates, Ralph Mullins and Freddie Ramey officiating. Burial will follow in Viers Cemetery at Route 2, Haysi. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday after 6 p.m. where a song service will be held at 7 p.m.

Ronald Rath Ball
PINEVILLE, W.Va. - Ronald R. "Ronnie" Ball, 54, of Maple Street passed away May 13, 2002, at Charleston Area Medical Center resulting from a fall on April 11, 2002. Born Aug. 14, 1947, in Welch, he was the son of Hope Huffman of Pineville and the late Ted Ball. Ronnie was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School and Bluefield State College. Ron also attended and was a member of Pineville Southern Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James P. Ball; maternal grandfather, W.R. Morgan; several aunts and uncles, including Margie Cochran of Bristol, Va., Jean Stone of Tazewell and Harold Ball of Princeton, W.Va., who passed away last year; and several other close relatives. Survivors include his grandmother, Laura Morganof Pineville; two daughters, Amanda Hope Ball of Robbinsville, N.C., and Heather Frame of Charles Town, W.Va.; two grandchildren; a half-sister, Teddy Ruth Day of Lexington, Ky.; two uncles, Ron Morgan of Bristol, Va., and Bill Morgan of Gary, Tenn., and several other family members. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Clinton Goad of Bristol, Tenn., officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. WISE - Delphia Collins Calhoun, 76, born Feb. 25, 1926, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 14, 2002, after an extended illness.
She was of the Pentecostal faith.
Surviving are her husband, Luther Calhoun of Wise; three daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Bob Baggett) of Conover, N.C., Joyce (Mrs. B.D. Fletcher) of Duffield, Va., and Patricia (Mrs. Herbert Stump) of Norton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Ray and Imogene Horne Calhoun of Norton; four granddaughters, Leslie (Mrs. Darren Lowery) of Pound, Dayna (Mrs. Sam Strong) of Mountain Home, Idaho, Airman 1st Class Ashleigh Burton of Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., and Megan Calhoun of Norton; three grandsons, Robert and Jeff Baggett of Conover and Treavor Calhoun of Norton; two great-grandchildren, Emily Amanda Strong of Mountain Home and Timothy Aaron Baggett of Catawba, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph Carter
BIG STONE GAP - Wallace Ralph Carter, 83, went to be with the Lord May 12, 2002, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Big Stone Gap. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Big Stone Gap.
He was a member of Stonega Veterans Associaton and a retired employee of Westmoreland Coal Co. with 45 years of service. For the past several years, Mr. Carter was a familiar face at Bullitt Park track in Big Stone Gap, where he spent many mornings walking his beloved dog, Cindy.
Surviving are daughters, Sue Carter Horner and husband, Jim, of Gray, Tenn., and Sharon Carter Marrs and husband, Bob, of Pittsburgh; grandson, John Scott Fischer of Spring, Texas; brothers Conrad Carter and wife, Thelma, of Big Stone Gap and Doug Carter of Chicago; sisters-in-law, Ann Stout Gibson and husband, Don, of Big Stone Gap, Della James Stout Cress and husband, Arthur, of Kingsport and Pauline Carter of Chicago (the widow of his late brother Harold Carter); nieces and nephews, Don Gibson and wife, Peggy, of Big Stone Gap, David Cress and wife, Patsy, of Winchester, Va., Elizabeth Carter Cooper and husband, Ken, of Kingsport, John Carter of Los Angeles, Conrad Carter Jr. and wife, Linda, of Albemarle, N.C., Tamara Carter, Steven Carter, Michael Carter, Carolyn Carter Charz and Larry Carter, all of Chicago; and special friend and neighbor, Wilma Brooks.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Stout Carter; parents, Bert and Clara Carter; and sister-in-law, Azlene Stout.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. May 15, 2002, in Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Ronnie Mutter officiating. Friends are invited to gather in the fellowship hall immediately following the funeral service. Graveside services will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens after the reception in the church fellowship hall.
