Caroline Seager
MARION - Caroline Seager, 78, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. She had fought a valiant battle against lung cancer. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Copenhaver Parrish and Deane M. Parrish. Their deaths occurred when she was a small child and she was raised by her grandparents, Dr. E.M. Copenhaver and Susan Sheffey Copenhaver. She was a graduate of Marion High School and of Sweetbriar College. She married Dr. Robert Seager of Covington, Va., on V.J. Day in 1945, when victory was announced in World War II. She accompanied Dr. Seager throughout his distinguished career as a historian and professor at Ohio State University, University of Kentucky and the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. She worked with him typing and editing many of his publications. She and her husband played a major role in the soon to be published Civil War letters of her great-grandfather, John Preston Sheffey, which will be edited by the widely respected Civil War historian, Dr. James Robertson of Virginia Tech. She made many friends in Marion neighborhoods where she walked her beloved Welch Corgi dogs daily. She was widely known as "the cookie lady," providing her delicious cookies to many charitable causes on festive occasions. She was preceded in death by a younger brother, Deane Parrish.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Seager of Reston, Va.; one sister, Susan Parrish Walker of Marion; two nieces, Caroline Brant of Wytheville and Jane Carpenter of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and one nephew, Jack Walker of Florence, S.C.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alan Gray officiating. Following the service, the family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marion Life Saving Crew, P.O. Faye M. Stanley
HAYSI - Faye M. Stanley, 73, of Route 1, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of Julia Willis Mullins Stanley and the late David Mullins. She was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith. Ms. Stanley was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Earnest A. Stanley, on April 26, 2002.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Omar Royce Stanley of West Germany; three daughters, Darlene S. Belcher, Marilyn S. Prater and Sonya S. Mullins, all of Haysi; two brothers, Curtis Mullins of Richmond and Dennis Stanley of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Sandra Stanley of Christiansburg, Va.; seven grandchildren, Michael Stanley, David R. and Tommie Belcher, Lee and Sally Belcher, Bruce and Misty Mullins, Ilesha and Dewayne Fuller, Mathew Mullins and Cindy and James Rice; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Darrell Milgrim officiating. Burial will follow in the Stanley-Mullins Cemetery, Route 1, Haysi. Alden M. Turner
CLINTWOOD - Alden M. Turner, 82, passed away at his home, Route 3, Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002. He was a life long resident of Dickenson County and the only surviving child of Rufus and Delilah Turner. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He was an employee for the Virginia Department of Transportation until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Turner, Clintwood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Molly and Michael Cantrell and Vera T. and Thomas B. Mullins, all of Clintwood.
Funeral services will be conducted from graveside at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at the Rebecca-Willis Cemetery, Haysi. Military grave rights to be conducted by the V.F.W. Post 8979, American Legion Post 227 and D.A.V. Chapter 35. Pallbearers will be Michael Cantrell, Richard Sluss, Elmer Wood, Bill David Short, Joe Harvey Short, Kip Short and Tommy Short. LEBANON - The funeral service for Carlos W. Hazel M. Billings
MARION - Hazel M. Billings, 86, left this earthly realm on Sunday, May 5, 2002, and joined her departed loved ones with our heavenly father.
Hazel lived in Thorpe, W.Va., for a number of years and was employed by the Union Supply Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel. She was a department manager in the retail division.
Hazel was well-known for her kindness and generosity to all. In addition to supporting the Christian religion, she had great compassion for feeding and clothing the underprivileged in all walks of life.
Suvivors include: three sisters, Virginia Billings, Marion, Clara Billings, Marion, and Gerry (Geraldine) Billings, Marion; several nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law; a favorite aunt; and numerous cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roselawn Cemetery with Pastor Claude D. Oliver and Pastor Rick Shuler officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Billings family.

ATKINS, Va. - Nelle Holmes Call, 78, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was a member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from Marley Mouldings. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Crystal and Bill Vincent of Richmond and Melody and Charles Hogston of Marion; two sisters, Helen Bostic of Marion and Mary Lee Adams of Bristol, Va.; one brother, Dennis Call of Atkins, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. VANSANT - Gladys Owens Colley, 74, of Route 1, passed away May 4, 2002, at Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George Washington and Matilda Thomas Owens. She was a homemaker and was of the Freewill Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Roland Colley; two sons, Cleveland and Clayton Colley; and two brothers, Lee and Roy Owens.
Survivors include six sons and daughters-in-law, James Edward and Linda Colley, Dayton, Ohio, Danny Ray and Glenda Colley, Council, Va., Donald Lee and Mildred Colley, Earl Keith and Bonita Colley, Ralph and Juanita Colley and Jeffrey Todd and Linda Colley, all of Vansant; one sister, Ines Owens, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Roger Lee Cox
WISE - Roger Lee (Big R) Cox, 55, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Norton Community Hospital, Norton.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Wilder Coal Co. Mr. Cox was a community man, former mayor of the Town of Wise, former Councilman of Town of Wise, former town policeman of Wise, former member and fire chief of Town of Wise Fire Department and former member of Wise Rescue Squad. He was a former employee of Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise. He was of the Protestant faith and attended the Guest River Pentecostal Chruch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul David Cox Sr. and Molly Ann Cox Pugh.
Surviving are two daughters, Crystal Stapleton and Mary Ann Cox, both of Wise; one son, Harold Craiger of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Paula Parsons of Wise and Becky Murry of Big Stone Gap, Va.; two brothers, Paul David Cox Jr. and Charles Cox, both of Wise; four grandchildren, Juston Barnes, Cynthia Barnes, Alyssa Craiger and Zachry Craiger; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Alice Cox of Wise.

RICHMOND - Rilda Hale Duke, 69, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Johnston-Willis Hospital after a lingering illness.
She was the daughter of the late Nathan and Berlie Hale of Castlewood.
Survivors include three daughters, Jennifer Griffithe, Seattle, Christine Miller, Richmond, and Donna Miller, Richmond; one son, Anthony Dingus, Castlewood; and one granddaughter, Kelly Price, Richmond.

Trulah S. Elkins
CLINTWOOD - Trulah S. Elkins, 72, passed away at home on Monday, May 6, 2002, after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Dickenson County, the daughter of the late Nelson and Harriet Lyall Sykes. Her first husband, Evertt Hicks, and second husband, Tilden Elkins, as well as three brothers preceded her in death. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her daughter, Deborah H. Lilly and husband Freddie, Clintwood; grandchildren, Jessica Dunford and Michael Lilly; two brothers, Clayton Sykes, Miamisburg, Ohio, and Leonard Sykes, Clinchco; and three sisters, Pearl Sutherland, Troy, Mich., Marie Mullins, Clintwood, and Gladys Turner, Clinchco.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2002, from the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with ministers Lynn Vanover and Joe Glenn Sluss officiating. Inus Hickam Fletcher
Mrs. Inus Hickam Fletcher, 100, of 825 Meadowview Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, May 5, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Fletcher was a native of Lee County, Va., having moved to Bristol in 1966. After moving to Bristol she worked as a dorm mother at Virginia Intermont College and was a sitter for many different children. She attended James Madison Teaching College in Harrisonburg, Va. She taught school for several years in Lee County, Va. Inus had been very active in the Bristol community, a devoted Christian and an active member of State Street United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She was an avid reader and had read practically every book in the Bristol Public Library. She had been active in garden clubs and the Gibbon History Club in Bristol.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David B. Fletcher; grandson, Mark David Fletcher; son-in-law, Rev. Donald Fauble; and her brothers and sister.
Mrs. Fletcher is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Don (Emma) Fauble of Steven City, Va.; one son, Dr. W. David Fletcher of Bristol, Va.; grandchildren, Steve L. Fletcher, Jonathan David Fauble, Timothy Roger Fauble and Dr. Terry M. Fletcher; great-grandchildren, Mark David Fletcher, Robert William Fletcher, Wesley Steven Fletcher and Anna Kate Fletcher. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the State Street United Methodist Church Chapel with Pastor Fred Derring officiating. CHILHOWIE - William "Bill" P. Freeman, 77, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mr. Freeman was born in Smyth County on June 29, 1924, to the late Charlie Preston and Mamie Elizabeth Anderson Freeman.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Ruby G. McCormick, 94, died May 5, 2002, in Bayonet Point Hospital, Hudson, Fla.
She was born in Bristol, Va., and moved to New Port Richey from Bristol in 1950. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of New Port Richey.
Surviving are nephews, Joseph C. Giles and Jack M. Giles; great-niece, Angela G. Quillin; and great-great-niece, Graycin B. Quillin.

Maude Ramey McFarlane
Maude Ramey McFarlane, 87, 638 Garden Lane, Bristol, Va., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Coeburn, Va., a daughter of the late James H. and Matilda Fuller Ramey, and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She attended Emory & Henry College and the University of Tennessee. Mrs. McFarlane was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and Circle No. 2 of the church, and was a member of the Soroptimist Club. She worked alongside her husband in the family printing business for many years and was a very devoted wife and mother.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edgar D. McFarlane; two sons, David E. McFarlane of Bristol, Va., and Philip D. McFarlane and his wife Pam of Bristol, Tenn.; a brother, Ernest L. Ramey and his wife Jean of Metropolitan Atlanta; two grandchildren, Kelly McFarlane and Dray McFarlane; several nieces and nephews; and four special friends, Hazelle Hubbard, Elizabeth Ham, Kitty Fraley and Mary Robinson.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Mongle; and a brother, Joe Ramey.

Robert T. Meek Sr.
Robert T. Meek Sr., 86, former resident of Hemlock Road, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Sunday, May 5, 2002. He had been a resident of Bristol for 43 years. He was born in Kosciusko, Miss., in 1916, and attended Delta State College. He was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II. He served as an Army officer of the 31st Dixie Division and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a 50-year member and past commander of the American Legion. He was a member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School for many years. His professional career as a pharmacutical representative spanned 47 years.
He is survived by: wife, Mary Meek of the home; son, Bob Meek Jr., and a daughter-in-law, Donita Meek, Madison, Ala.; and granddaughter, Amanda C. Meek, Bluffton, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roley Rose; two infant daughters, Judith Ann and Phyllis Kay Rose; and a son, Jerry Rose. Also preceding her were two brothers, Howard Eugene Kerr and Jimmie Sherril Kerr; and two sisters, Anges Pauline (Kerr) Montiel and Madeline "Madge" (Kerr) Mullins.
She is survived by one son, Larry Kenneth Rose of Clintwood; four brothers, Robert Earl and Madeline Kerr of Abingdon, Bob and Dorothy Kerr of Saline, Mich., Joe and Barbara Kerr of Sarasota, Fla., and Frank and Deb Kerr of Abingdon; three sisters, Wilma Johnson of Pataskala, Ohio, Mary Sue Valletta of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Tressa Mullins of Wise; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel with clergymen Frank Kerr, LynnVanover and Gary Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Route 1, Clintwood. Pallbearers will be Larry Kenneth Rose, Joe Kerr, Frank Kerr, Raben Fletcher, Gene Turner and Roley Bowman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.Tuesday, May 7, in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel.

SALTVILLE - Ms. Colleen R. Sheppard, 52, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Ms. Sheppard was preceded in death by her parents, Jim & Hattie Rhea; and her husband, Tom Sheppard. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors: two sons, Randy Sheppard, Chilhowie, and Brandon Sheppard, Chilhowie; one daughter, Tina Sheppard, Chilhowie; one brother, Jimmy & Vena Rhea, Chilhowie; two sisters, Patsy and Jim Richardson, Marion, and Rita and Bob Ropp, Ormond Beach, Fla.; two nieces and two nephews, Lynn, Jennifer, Jamie and Tommy.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, in the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville. The family will receive friends from 4 till 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Edna Frances Strouth
ARLINGTON, Va. - Edna Frances Strouth, formerly from Bristol Tennessee, passed away on Feb. 17, 2001, in Arlington, Va. She was the daughter of Rosa Jane and True Byron Morrell and the sister of Claude A. Morrell and the late Charles T. Morrell of Bristol.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice Marlene Moore; one granddaughter, Andrea Noelle Elswick; one great-granddaughter, Kylee Marlene Elswick, all of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Claude A. Morrell; and a sister-in-law, Marie Morrell, wife of the late Charles T. Morrell. Her ashes will be buried
at Mountainview Cemetery on Tuesday, May 7, at 3 p.m., following a memorial service by Dr. David Charlton conducted in the mausoleum. Family and friends are welcome.
