September 19, 1934 - August 27, 1967
Brian Epstein was born in 1934, in Liverpool, England to Harry and Malka Epstein. At 16, Brian began work in the family furniture store. In 1952 he was conscripted into National Service but was discharged ten months later when he was found to be emotionally and mentally unfit to serve. He managed another family owed furniture store before briefly training as an actor at the Royal Academy for Dramatic Arts. When he found this did not suit him, he was put in charge of the ground floor of his family’s newly acquired North End Road Music Stores (NEMS) where he expanded from pianos and wireless sets to gramophone records. He found this to be a successful venture and soon opened another branch, a short distance from The Cavern club, where The Beatles played. In 1961, Epstein found that he had been selling a number of records by The Beatles, so he went to see them at The Cavern club. Afterwards, he met with them and offered to be their manager. A contract was signed on January 24th, 1962 and he soon secured a record contract for them with EMI, a major British record label. As well, at the request of the rest of the Beatles, he sacked drummer Pete Best to allow Ringo Starr at spot with the band. Epstein also managed Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, The Fourmost, and Cilla Black. Brian Epstein remained the Beatles manager until his death, of a drug overdose, on August, 27th 1967, in Belgravia, London. He was 32.
