Barry White, R&B baritone vocalist died Friday July 4th, 2003. Barry died at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of complications from kidney failure at the age of 58.
Barry White was born September 12, 1944, in Galveston, Texas. He was raised by his mother and also had a younger brother Daryl. The threesome moved and settled in South Central Los Angeles. Barry started singing at a very early age, singing with his Baptist Church choir gave him the experience and confidence to pursue a musical career full time. He eventually married his childhood sweetheart, Mary and they had four children. During this time Barry received a recording contract with a major record label and soon after began to make a name for himself in the music industry.
Barry recorded a number of successful hits in the early 1960’s and paired up with musical groups such as Upfronts, the Atlantics and the Majestics. It wasn’t until 1969 that Barry gained enormous success, the same year he divorced his first wife Mary. After the couple split, Barry went on to form the group ”Love Unlimited”, a female vocal trio made up of Diane Taylor, Glodean James (his future wife) and her sister Linda. The group recorded hits such as "Walkin' In The Rain With The One I Love", "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby", "Never, Never Gonna give Ya Up" and "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" .
Barry’s musical career peaked by the late 1970’s, his songs often epitomized seductive themes. His husky growl and smooth and sexually suggestive lyrics were often referred to as make out music. Barry continued to pump out hits throughout the 80’s and 90’s and re-gained popularity when his songs were included in the hit series Ally McBeal.
Barry developed complications due to his weight and suffered with chronic high blood pressure for many years, he is survived by his eight children and grandchildren.
