Born in Paris in 1619, Cyrano, a great French writer became a soldier but soon abandoned this career because of a battle wound. He grew to be known for his prominent nose, though his characteristics have been said to be a creation of a later writer. His duels and other escapades gained him reputation as a romantic hero. He wrote several tragedies and then turned his attention to satirical comedies in which he lampooned his associates. Cyrano's most famous works are two prose fantasies, “L'Histoire comique Des états et empires de la lune” in 1656 and “L'Histoire comique des états et empires du soleil”in 1662, which in 1923 were combined and translated by English writer Richard Aldington as “Voyages to the Moon and Sun”. His works are considered precursors to modern science-fiction writing. At the tender age of 36 Cyrano passed away in Paris on July 28th, 1655. Later on in 1897 a French author honored Cyrano by performing a fictional verse drama, as the play was to do with Cyrano’s life.
