Gordon Jump, the amiable American character actor with Midwest sensibilities died Monday at the age of 71 years. He suffered from pulmonary fibrosis, which is an illness that causes scarring of the air sacs of the lungs, leading to heart or respiratory failure He spent most of his career appearing on television and is best know for his role as the sweet-natured, slightly befuddled radio station manager Arthur Carlson, on the classic sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati (1978-82) and as the "Lonely Repairman" in TV commercials for Maytag appliances.
A native of Dayton, OH, he got his start following his studies in broadcasting and communication at Kansas State University on the radio at station WIBW, Topeka. While at the station, he wore many hats, including the hat of WIB the Clown and the host of a local children's show. He later worked on radio in Ohio until 1963 when he decided to move to Hollywood to launch an acting career. Through the '60s and '70s, he appeared on numerous series including Green Acres. When the WKRP in Cincinnati series ended in the early '80s, he returned to making guest appearances on other shows. In addition to television, he also made occasional film appearances. He is survived by his wife, four daughters and a son.
