Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey was born in England on August 7, 1903. His fossil discoveries in East Africa proved that man was far older than had previously been believed and that human evolution was centered in Africa, rather than in Asia, as earlier discoveries had suggested. Leakey died on October 1, 1972, at age 69.
