Doug Bennett, the lead singer of the popular 80's Canadian indie band, Doug and the Slugs, died over the weekend at the age of 52 years.
He was admitted to hospital in Calgary on Oct. 9, 2004 suffering acute symptoms from a lengthy illness. He lost consciousness soon after arriving at the hospital and died on Saturday.
He was born in Toronto in 1951 and moved to Vancouver in 1973. He formed Doug and the Slugs four years later.
The band released four gold albums and performed from New York to the far north and was one of Canada's premier touring acts in the 1980s. The Slugs continued to tour extensively throughout Canada and the US after their 80's success.
A prolific songwriter, Bennett wrote a number of hits for the band including; Too Bad, Day By Day, Making It Work, Tomcat Prowl, among others.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their three teenage daughters.
A memorial service will be held in Vancouver.
