April 28, 1960 - October 03, 2004
John Cerutti, a former Blue Jays pitcher who became a television analyst for the team, was found dead in his SkyDome hotel room on the morning of Sunday, October 3, 2004. He was 44.
Born John Joseph Cerutti on April 28, 1960, in Albany, New York, the left-hander played college ball at Amherst. He began his Major League baseball career with the Toronto Blue Jays where he was Toronto's first-round draft pick, 21st overall, in 1981. Cerutti was shuttled back and forth between the Blue Jays' bullpen and starting rotation in his first several seasons.
He joined the Jays in earnest, in 1985, and spent six seasons with the club, helping them win American League East titles in '85 and '89. While never overpowering, he was effective when he overcame a tendency to allow home runs. On July 2, 1986, the southpaw threw a record four wild pitches against Boston. In 1989 he helped Toronto to an AL East title by winning 11 games in 31 starts while posting a 3.07 ERA.
Cerutti signed with Detroit as a free agent following the 1990 season, missing Toronto's World Series titles in 1992-'93. He ended his big league playing career in 1991 after one season with the Tigers. His career record was 49-43 with a 3.94 earned-run average in 229 games.
His first media job was in 1993, as Baseball commentator for Time Warner Cable. Cerutti began his Blue Jays broadcasting career in 1997 as a colour commentator for CBC and was with them through 2002. He spent the past three seasons as lead analyst for Rogers Sportsnet, becoming one of the better commentators covering the team.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia, and their three children; Daniel, Nicole and Janine.
