Michael Dorris was an American born writer who was responsible for shedding light on the effects of alcohol on an unborn fetus. Michael, whose ancestors were descendents of the American Indian, became interested in fetal alcohol syndrome when his wife became pregnant with their son. Born on January 30, 1945, in Louisville, Kentucky Michael suffered serious bouts of depression throughout his entire life. He managed to graduate from Georgetown University in 1967 with an English and Classics degree and continue his education at Yale University where he earned a graduate degree in Anthropology and his M.Phil. By 1972 Michael settled at Dartmouth College, during this time he established the Native American Studies Program, lectured and conducted research projects and published a number of nationally recognized journals and books. Michael sometimes wrote under the pseudonym "Milou North".
In 1989 Michael Dorris won the National Book Critics Circle Award for the groundbreaking book “ The Broken Cord”. The book was based on the research conducted by Michael and his wife Louise Erdrich about the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome. The book achieved nation wide recognition and the attention of government officials. On April 11, 1997 unable to cope with his life long battle with depression Michael took his own life on April 11, 1997 in a New Hampshire motel room at the age of 52. .
