Academy Award winning actor Frederic March died April 14, 1975. He was 77.
March was born Ernest Frederick Bickel in Racine, Wisconsin on August 31, 1897. He left the University of Wisconsin to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War I. When he resumed his education, March majored in banking while he dabbled in college dramatics.
After graduation, he began work at a New York City bank, but soon quit his job to pursue a career in acting.
He started out in silent movies, starring in two 1921 productions, Paying The Piper and The Great Adventure. His Broadway debut was The Devil In The Cheese in 1926.
March signed a five-year contract with Paramount Studios, and soon began developing a reputation of being a subtle and sensitive actor with great range.
His starring role in 1932's Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde won him the Best Actor Oscar in 1932. March won his second Oscar for The Best Years Of Our Lives in 1946.
March loved acting on the stage. He won the New York Drama Critics Award in 1956 for A Long Day's Journey Into Night.
He died of cancer in Los Angeles, California on April 14, 1975.
