System Mechanic - Clean, repair, protect, and speed up your PC!Kurt Cobain
1967 - 1994
Kurt Donald Cobain, the rock singer, committed suicide on April 5, 1994. He was 27.
Cobain was born February 20, 1967 in Hoquaim, Washington. His father was a mechanic and his mother a cocktail waitress. His parents divorced when Cobain was seven. The break-up reportedly made him feel insecure and unloved the rest of his life.
Cobain became interested in rock and roll at age eleven when he first heard the music of the British punk rock band, the Sex Pistols. Their rise and fall captivated the young boy. His anti-social behavior in high school made him a loner, and music seemed to be an outlet.
He and two of his friends formed the rock band Nirvana in 1986. It consisted of vocalist Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl.
After a few years of playing small concerts and making demo tapes, Nirvana was signed by Geffen Records, one of the industry's largest labels. They produced an album called Nevermind, which contained the song Smells Like Teen Spirit.
The album and single went to number one, selling over 10 million copies. The success made the band instant millionaires. The record sales topped out at over $550 million.
Cobain said he was not prepared for the success of the band's music, saying he was having difficulty coping with the stardom. He turned to drugs, especially heroin, during the early 1990's.
In February 1992, he married an already pregnant Courtney Love. Their child, Frances Bean Cobain, was born in early 1993.
Cobain and his band continued to turn out hit records. The album In Utero was released in 1993. Its singles All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box are supposed to be reflections of the Cobains' precarious marriage.
Meanwhile, Cobain was experiencing psychotic and depressive disorders. He attempted suicide by drug overdose in March of 1994. He recovered and was placed in a detoxification program, but fled from the program only two days into treatment.
A gun fanatic for years, he killed himself on April 5, 1994 after barricading himself in his Seattle home. He left a suicide note addressed to his wife and 19-month-old baby, ending it with the words, "I love you, I love you."
