Author Willa Cather, writer of O Pioneers!, died April 24, 1947. She was 73.
Cather was born December 7, 1873 in Back Creek Valley, Virginia. Her family moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska in 1884. Cather graduated in a class of three students in 1884.
She was an 1895 graduate of the University of Nebraska where she studied languages, English literature and journalism. Her first job was as an editor with Home Monthly, a women's magazine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Cather began to write short stories while continuing careers in journalism and teaching. She published her first book, a compilation of poems called April Twilights in 1903.
She took a job with McClure's Magazine in New York in 1906. Her first book, Alexander's Bridge, was released in 1912. Her subsequent book, O Pioneers!, was a critical and public success. Eventually, she was able to devote most of her time to writing.
Her 1923 novel, A Lost Lady, was made and re-made into films in 1924 and 1934. But Cather was so disappointed in the film adaptations that she refused to allow any more of her work to be made into movies during her lifetime.
Some of her other works include My Antonia which was made into a television mini-series in the mid 1990's, and Death Comes To The Archbishop.
Cather died of a cerebral hemorrhage in New York City on April 24, 1947.
