Actor Billy Gilbert died September 23, 1971.
He was 77.
Gilbert was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 12, 1894.
The son of opera singers, he began performing in San Francisco at the age of 12.
His early career was in vaudeville.
He developed a sneezing routine, which became popular with audiences.
He also appeared on Broadway where Director Hal Roach discovered him and placed him in the first of Gilbert's 150 movies.
His film debut was Dynamite Allen in 1921.
Other credits include One Good Turn (1931), Pack Up Your Troubles (1932) and Five Weeks In A Balloon (1962), his last movie.
On television, his best-known role was as a teacher on Andy's Gang from 1955-60.
Gilbert died of complications of a stroke in Los Angeles, California on September 23, 1971.
