Nell Cater at the age of 54, was found dead on January 23, 2003 on the floor of her Beverly Hill Home. Her publicist stated that the actress was found by one of her teenaged sons. Carter who has performed numerous roles as a sitcom actor, live performer, and singer had earned herself a number of the industries top accolades. She received the prestigious Tony award for her contribution in "Ain't Misbehavin'." In 1982 Carter won an Emmy for the TV version of “Ain’t Misbehavin’. The 80’s earned Nell Carter a lot more public notoriety. She continued her success with the TV sitcom Gimme A Break. Fans agree, the unforgettable gregarious housekeeper, for a widowed police chief is one role that will stay in their memory of her forever.
With success, there is always some hardships in the entertainment industry. Carter, later began to suffer significantly with her health, and she did for many years. She lived and coped with type II diabetes. She also suffered a major set-back in 1992. She had an aneurysm removed form her brain, which took a great deal of time to recover from. However, while she recovered from her health problems, she continued her work as an actor-singer. Her true passion of being a performer, helped her healing process immensely.
In the early years of Carter’s career, she started off as a gospel singer. Singing in and around her birthplace of Birmingham, Alabama. She later caught the acting bug and headed to New York City. The multi-talented Nell Carter will be remembered as a true actor. An actor who had the capacity to expanded and delve in to the different realms of acting that being comedy, drama and musicals.
