June 12, 1952 - April 14, 1983
Pete Farndon bassist for the rock band, The Pretenders was born on June 12, 1952 in Hereford, England. Pete grew up playing bass for a number of bands in and around the Hereford area. Pete wanted to be a full time musician so he moved to London. He quickly hooked up with a folk band called the Bushwhackers. Pete didn’t really enjoy playing folk music, but decided to tour with them in Australia anyways. Upon his return, Pete met up with some friends who suggested he try out for a new rock band called The Pretenders.
The Pretenders were impressed with Pete and they hired him right away. They went into the studio soon after and recorded their first single "Stop Your Sobbing". The song was released and it was an instant hit. The Pretenders went back to the studio to record their first full album. The album was such a great success, their songs "Kid", "Talk of the Town", and "Brass in Pocket", topped the charts. Riding the wave of success, the band’s manager convinced the band they were ready for a world wide tour. By the time the tour ended in 1983 there was growing dissension among the band and Pete Farndon. Pete had caused increasingly strained relations with his band mates due to his heroin use. He became belligerent, unreliable and impossible to work with. Chrissy Hynde and the other band members asked Pete to leave. Pete Farndon was found dead on April 14, 1983 from a drug overdose.
