Dr. Atkins, diet guru Doctor died April 17, 2003 of a severe head injury at the age of 72. Atkins had suffered a severe head injury April 8 after falling on an icy sidewalk while walking to work. Dr. Atkins is famous for his revolutionary diet called the Atkins diet. He first published his findings in a book in 1972 where he advocated his unorthodox weight-loss plan. The diet consisted of consuming meat, eggs and cheese and discouraged foods that were high in carbohydrates such as bread, rice and fruit.
At the time, the medical establishment was encouraging a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. The following year, the American Medical Association labeled Dr. Atkins' diet as unhealthy and warned people that the diet could be detrimental to their health. He was called upon by the U.S. congress to defend his research. His book sold over sold 15 million copies despite the backlash of the American Medical Association. Dr. Atkin’s re-released an updated version of his diet in the early 90’s and topped the New York Times best-seller list. Just this past February, the medical association did acknowledge that some half-dozen studies did prove that people on the Atkins diet lost weight without compromising their health.
