June 17, 1877 - August 30, 1961
Born Charles Douville Coburn in Savannah, Georgia on June 17, 1877. Coburn worked his way up from program boy to manager in a local theatre and eventually switched to acting himself. In 1901 he made his Broadway debut before entering films in his sixties with the title role in "Boss Tweed" (1933). Coburn subsequently became one of Hollywood's most beloved character actors, most typically playing sharp, crusty patriarchal figures, usually sympathetic, very occasionally not. He won a 1943 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in "The More the Merrier". Charles Coburn died on August 30, 1961 of a heart attack in New York City. He was 84.
